Want to go back to stock, which ROM should I install? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't found a custom ROM I've liked, so I want to go back to the stock Samsung ROM for my i9300 (UK).
Which should I download and flash to my phone? I9300XXEMG4?

I would, it's best BTU firmware to date

I had to Google "BTU". I believe it's a UK firmware variant.
The other UK firmware variants seem to be: "BTC, CPW, H3G, O2I, O2U, ORA, OXA*, TMU, TSC, VIR, VOD, XEU"
What's the difference between them all, and is BTU the one I want?

BTU is unbranded like from carphone warehouse as opposed to branded that you get direct from the carrier
please try to remember; questions go in the q&a section. General isn't for questions

Holy crap, I9300XXEMG4_I9300OXAEMG4_BTU.zip is 850 MB :| Talk about bloated

They're all that big. Fyi mg4 alters efs. Flash that and you cant use any other baseband

I don't know what that means.

If you dont know what that means, you definitely shouldn't be flashing things!
I'm not sure how basic I need to be so i'll be as basic as I can.
The s3 has an efs partition. This is a partition on your internal memory that stores your imei number among other things
The imei number is mucho important. Without a working imei number, your phone cannot operate on a mobile network. In otherwords, your phone is nothing more than a miniature wifi tablet.
Every official rom comes with a baseband. This is also known as modem or radio. This is software and its responsible for connecting your phone's telephony Services via the radio hardware to the network.
Many rooted users change their baseband in the hope that they get better signal / battery life
Now here is the problem. The latest official 4.1.2 changes the format of the efs. The mg4 baseband "updates" efs. The baseband works fine and can read the imei and the phone can continue to operate on the network. However this new efs format is not backwards compatible. This means any older baseband (packaged with any rom other than mg4) cannot read imei, meaning you cannot connect to the network. At the moment, only the mg4 baseband can read the updates efs so once you flash this rom (and baseband) it is not possible to use any other baseband. If you flash any rom older than mg4, it will only connect if you then put the mg4 baseband back on.... unless you backed up efs before flashing mg4... in otherwords, once flashed mg4, unless you backed up efs, you can never go backwards with the baseband. Or rom....

"JUST... DONT!"

Or make sure to read a guide about flashing roms before you flash any rom. Especially about backing up your efs folder. A lot of the custom roms have options for doing that or do that automatically so chances are you may already have an efs backup, but better not risk it.

Well he could flash that rom but he has to back up his old efs first for getting safe.
But I do not think he is able to do that due to he is unknowing.

Dude learn reading.
Flashing the BTU EMG4 Firmware will change your efs for ever, so if there is any bug or part in this firmware you do not like, the way for backflash will be complicated.
The old modems are not able to run with the new efs, so U have to flash the new modem on the older firmware.
Or you flash back your original efs back.
But this could be very dangerous because people are scared to do that.

Just instale a safe firmware. not MG4 AND MF6.... i am on XXEME2 ITS THE BEST.

MG4 is perfectly safe, it is a BTU firmware intended for the UK, it works extremely well and it is the users of this forum that don't know what they are doing that make it unsafe... It's as simple as that

[Q] Galaxy S3 to stock - No cell conenction

I have been using custom roms for 2 years. Decided to go stock. I am in Australia, and my Galaxy S3 (T) is bought through a group called Crazy Johns, but they are owned by Vodafone.
I found a stock ROM:
I9300XXEMC2_I9300OXAEMC2_BTU
I flashed it successfully, and all starts up nicely. However, I can't get any cellular data. No calls... no data.
I manually try to connect to Vodafone network in the Network settings, but then get told "Vodafone unavailable".
I then tried to download a new modem, hoping that was the issue.
I got one called modem_RIL_CWM_I9300TDUEMB1
No luck.
I then thought, OK, maybe Vodafone isn't allowing my pone on the network, because the firmware isn't a Vodafone official one? But, that can't be right. I could have bought my phone from outside Australia.
Funny thing is, when I got the phone, it shows 'Crazy Johns' on the settings screen. Now, I have no mention of Crazy Johns. Is it modem related?

I'm not sure. I was using Omega 43.9 firmware version before, and it was working fine.
Details on their page are:
Based on firmware XXEMG5 Android 4.1.2 (Date: 17/07/2013)
Kernel Stock XXEMG5
Modem DDEMG2
Multi 130 csc set to EUR
I see an 'MG5' there.
Could this be an issue?

Mg5 and mg4 are the latest modem. If you were on it you can't go on the older one. You have to do 2 thinks: if you have the efs backup do restore, it's contain your imei, because now you lost it, or flah the mg4 or mg5 modem. But you find everything on the s3 general section.

Any chance you could help me out? I started a thread yesterday with my own problems with a couple of replies but nothing that really explained how to solve my problem.
I flashed a MIUI rom based on CM10.1 with a baseband I9300XXDLI8, because of wifi problems decided to go back to stock I9300OXAALE8 (BTU)
Had the messed up IMEI problem but my EFS backup I made in Dec 12 is only 32kb! Copied all files to efs folder on phone and got my IMEI number back but phone wouldn't accept my contract 3UK sim (no network - emergency calls etc) but would my O2 PAYG sim.
I flased a custom rom (GlamourS4) and ended up with baseband I900DDEMG2 and build I900XXUFME7. I was advised to reflash because my baseband was different to my firmware, downloaded latest BTU from sammombile and phone now reads:
Baseband I9300XXEMG4 - Build I9300XXEMG4 but I'm still having problems with my phone not accepting my 3 sim but ok with O2 sim. Phone is on 3 contract by the way.
Sorry to hijack someone's thread but getting a little desperate, old age is creeping in and I'm honestly finding it difficult to understand the talk about modems etc.My original help request is HERE and has screen shots if it's any help. Thanks in advance
Thread moved to proper forum.

[Q] GT-i9300 imei null/null, unknown baseband

I have an i9300 with a blank efs folder. The phone corrupted and was stuck in a boot loop. This happened when battery run out while file sharing was in progress via bluetooth to another android samsung. I flashed it with 4.22 android jelly bean immediately XXUFME3 but it remained stuck on boot loop, I never backedup efs file. Later found the original ROM although it comes up as custom rom, which is i9300XXEMB5_i9300OXAEMB5 but still no luck as it stuck in boot loop. My sister has the same identical phone both were purchased together in Dubai. I did factory reset etc, no luck still in boot loop.
I later gave it to a mobile shop who flashed it with a rom for free, didn't charge me because it came up as imei null/null and baseband unknown. The phone now boots and has Build number of IMM76D.I9300BUALE6 and is german language I believe. I had read some threads by now and I immediately rooted the phone and backed it up, but my efs folder is blank.
Last night I flashed the phone 2 times with i9300xxemb5 rom and rooted it and it still boot looped even factory reset or cache delete don't solve boot loop, Then I restored the working rom of build i9300BUALE6 from CWM and powered phone on and got a baseband of i9300XXEMB5 and Build of i9300BUALE6 also got an imei of 004999xxxxx0000/01 and the phone found the network and my efs folder which had been blank all this time was full of files. In my haste I realized the sim was not plugged in and removed battery, when I restarted with sim, baseband was gone and imei was null/null. I repeated my steps in hopes I could get this fluke opportunity but nothing yet. Was this a miracles I didn't seize by not backing up the efs folder?
My sister's phone is an identical model bought together with mine is,
AP:i9300xxemb5
CP:i9300xxemb5
CSC:i9300oxaemb5
So my question is I need the original stock rom for my sisters phone that won't get stuck in a boot loop on my phone
My phone is now
AP:i9300buale6
CP:unknown
CSC:i9300vfgale6
Also can this be fixed by backing up my sister's efs folder or backing up her phone and flashing it on my phone. I can't get warranty for this phone now since it has binary counter of 12, don't have proof of purchase and also I am not in Dubai but in Africa. What Rom file should I try to flash. Also because this is a custom rom I am not getting samsung serial port in device manager can't use NV writer. Any help is appreciated.
If you don't have an efs backup then you need a service centre, you cannot repair it. Trying to use another phone's efs folder won't work and is illegal in many countries.
Read the sticky on efs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289
If its a custom rom their is a very small chance that it included backup pf EFS .
Look for EFS tar file on phone .
I say slim chance and judged by the OP probably no chance .
004999xxxxx0000/0 that's just the generic non working IMEI .

Sorry to hijack this thread but I dropped my S3 i9300 on water and have the imei null /null and baseband unknown problem, therefore SIM cards are not recognized. hi from what you explained it seems that right now your phone has no baseband. One thing you can do to possibly recover your imei and network settings is to flash a stock rom that uses mg4 or mg2 baseband. use a rom from sammobile and flash with odin make sure you use a rom with an mg2 or mg4 baseband. good luck

A custom kernel has no connection with the lost of IMEI or it's a solution for the recovery of an IMEI. So no, no custom kernels will help you with your problem.
Either try ashraf's suggestion or ultimately bring it to a Samsung service center for repair.

I don't know about perseus kernel but I don't think it will help. your imei and efs foder was intact before flashing4.2.2. I understand that the problem began before flashing 4,2,2. but if you ever had a rom that used an mg4 or mg2 modem and then used an older modem your phone would lose its network connection and would probably display a generic imei number. if it says null usually that means it is corrupted or no modem is installed . either way if you send to service center you need to flash a stock rom and reset your flash counter . since some people have recovered their efs and imei by flashing newer modems or firm wares that use them why not try it before sending phone to service center

Thanks but you didn't read my first post. I did not flash any rom (or even root) before the problem, which started from dropping the phone on water...so I have no warranty left This means I can take the phone anyway I want (custom kernel, rooted) to samsung service cause they will charge me anywat.
But I think I will try to flash a rom like the other user sayd because I flashed the Perseus Kernel and the phone is now unstable and reboots randonly...
Cheers
my mistake that post was for the op of this thread
I don't care anymore that my original answer was
deemed not acceptable enough and warranted a second opinion. I am once and for all, going to put this nonsense to bed.
If you lost your imei because you submerged your phone in water it is a hardware issue. It is INCONCEIVABLE that flashing a rom, kernel or baseband will restore the imei. A SOFTWARE solution will NOT repair DAMAGED HARDWARE. This is obvious!
If your Blu ray player cannot read disks because the disk tray fell off, upgrading the laser driver wont help. This is exactly the same.
Depending which hardware failed, replacing the tray may help although given the symptoms, it seems much more likely that your radio stack is damaged. Take it somewhere to get it repaired and stop wasting time pretending software will fix your issue. It's IMPOSSIBLE

I see you're still struggling to understand this.
2) If the ROM is MG (M = 2013, G = July) or Newer, the ROM changes EFS format. This means if you flash one of these ROMs without backing up your EFS, you are restricted to using an MG modem or newer as only Modems from July 2013 can read new EFS format. I'm really not sure how I can make this any simpler to understand.
However, if you flash the modem separately from the ROM, EFS is not changed. So for example, if you are on ME7 ROM, you can flash MG2 modem without affecting EFS.
I hope this is clear now.

Dear rootSU,
you've been very patient with me and i really appreciate your efforts at making me understand and i've understood a lot because of you only, but what puzzles me is that
1)this restriction is for those who've not backed up EFS whereas in my case i had in the very beginning only made an EFS backup.
2)and if i flash ME7 ROM then since am coming from MG5 to ME7 my imei would again be corrupt and i'll have to flash MG2 baseband...right??even if i have an EFS backup(EFS PRO won't restore my imei in this case despite a backup)?
thanks in advance

Not Registered On Network

Before someone tells me, YES I know this is a common problem and YES I know there are lots of thread that talk about this particular subject.
But I think I'm having a different problem.
I had a I9300 unbranded that, for some reason, didn't wanted to update through Kies or OTA. But It could make calls and send txt msgs.
I decided to update it manually using ODIN to the latest official firmware for my phone (XEF - France). I downloaded it from Sammobile. Everything went perfect. Then I wiped everything to just to be safe.
Everything works great. Wifi, Apps, everything. Except making calls or sending txt msgs. It says "not registered on network".
My IMEI is still the same as before (the efs didn't get corrupted I guess).
Anyway, I have a backup from every partition. So I can get back to the previous state. But I want to fix this problem! Does anyone knows what's wrong?
I use to have this:
PDA: I9300XXBLH3
MODEM: I9300XXLH1
CSC: I9300XEFBLH2
Product Code: XEF
Country: France
And I flashed this:
PDA: I9300XXEMG4
MODEM: I9300XXEMG4
CSC: I9300XEFEMG2
Product Code: XEF
Country: France
Did I do something wrong?

Oh...f*ck!
I used the firmware that was supposed for my phone. Nothing else. Everything stock. I've downloaded it from Sammobile. I can't believe it!
My IME is OK. It's the same I used to have before (when it worked). Are you sure that my EFS is wrong now?
Can't I flash another firmware? I still have my EFS backup.
Which one should I've had flashed of these?
sammobile -> /firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9300&pcode=XEF#firmware
(Sorry I'm not allowed to post links yet)
If you backed up your EFS before the upgrade , you have two choices.
Go back to the original firmware and restore your EFS from backup or
Install patched mg4 modem found here on forums.
Sometimes the modem is not compatible with your region.
You can flash any of the newer modems available here as well.
You just can't install the older modems as your EFS has been changed to EFS version 2

Install patched mg4 modem found here on forums.
Sometimes the modem is not compatible with your region.
You can flash any of the newer modems available here as well.
You just can't install the older modems as your EFS has been changed to EFS version 2

I've been reading this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377731
But I still don't undestand something. My IMEI is showing correctly. Shouldn't the phone work anyway regardless of the Modem version?
The problem on the modem version is that once is changed, you can't revert back unless you have an EFS backup. But that doesn't explain why my phone is not working. Am I right? I mean, it should work! I have another i9300 with the same modem and it works...
Are you sure this is my problem? I don't see the logic behind your sugestion.
Flashing a full stock rom, EMG4, including the modem shouldn't break anything. You say your phone had issues before you flashed, did it have any unlock or serial (ariza) patches applied?
If so then they won't work on efs v2 and you'll need to apply the patched modem, or flash an earlier rom (from before EMG4) then restore your efs backup.

My phone was rooted and it didn't update though official methods (I don't know why!). I wanted to leave it to stock. That's why I flashed the stock rom. Thanks god I did my backup. But I want to keep this version, It is official and it's the latest one. It should work!
I've bought the phone on Amazon and it came already rooted to my surprise. I just wanted to return it to stock, Should I start worring?
I actually backed up everything except USER DATA partition. So I can still take a look at the system partition I used to have (I guess...).
My previous issues where related to my phone not wanting to update. But the network connectivity was ok.
If I flashed a new stock rom... can I still have remanents from the previous rom? I also wiped everything. Does that make any sense? (sorry I'm kind of new in all this).
PD: I'm getting scared!!! :crying:
Best go read the efs 'know this stuff' thread in general forum, stickies for more information and links to help.

Sounds like something got screwed during the update. Installing the patched mg4 modem should fix it

Yes reading the stickies is the best way to get the answers you require. Each problem encountered is slightly different.

The stick says "Also it would seem, Phones that had this patch ON EFS v1 ROMS will break their IMEI if they upgrade to EFS v2 ROMS."
My IMEI is ok. So I guess I didn't have ariza patch installed. That's a relief.
Anyway... I think I'll wait a bit. Maybe it'll fix itself ( I'm just lying to myself here haha).
Ok more question RickEphraims. Why exactly I need a "patched" modem? I don't want to revert to EFS v1. I just want my phone to work properly. Wouldn't it the same to flash stock MG4 modem again?
I'm no expert but the patched MG4 modem has worked for lots of people. It's still an MG4 modem.

Ok. Thanks.
I will try to flash this version:
And then restore the EFS partition.
Or should I do it the other way (efs first and then flash).
I want to stay official. This is not a phone I will be using so I don't want to leave a root in place or anything like that.
Any advice on this regard?
Flash original firmware and restore EFS.
That should put it back to stock
---------- Post added at 09:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 AM ----------
I'm not really qualified to give you advice.
I'm just speaking from experience of what I've done to fix mine after flashing an MG4
I hadn't backed up EFS so it was way harder

Easiest to try and check COULD BE:
1. Goto setting-> More Networks-> Mobile networks -> Network operators
2. Search for network service provider and select it !
Ok. So I flashed the previous official stock firmware (efs v1). As expected, the IMEI wasn't ok. So I restored my EFS v1 backup. IMEI was ok again. But I still get "no network".
I'm now going back to the original firmware (4.0.4) to see if it starts working again.
The phone is unbranded and apparently from France (XEF). Can I flash any other firmware? France is not my country although firmware 4.0.4 worked alright.
Also, Is there a way to know if Ariza patch was installed before I got the phone?
Check the phone serial number matches the one under the battery. Ariza patch fixes serial number problem on efs v1 only, it didn't fix imei issues.
If it's an i9300 then any firmware will work, you say 'apparently' from France, you should know this information -it is suspicious that do not.

News news. I flashed back the original firmware 4.0.4. It didn't work.
To my surprise, the serial number is 00000. THAT is my problem. And I now undestand why it was rooted from the start, probably it had some sort of patch to make it work (like ariza).
Now I'm not sure what to do. Send it to repair (I WILL be expensive in my country) or try the zuluman patched modem. But I guess flashing the patched modem is postponing the inevitable...
What a luck...
There was a post in general forum where a guy edited a file in efs folder to restore serial, you can try that or update to EMG4 rom and apply the patched modem.
You will probably find patched modems get released for newer roms, don't stay on older firmware -they cause SDS.
Edit: the thread about restoring serial I'd actually in q&a, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544109

[Q] Official and safe ROM update

Hi everyone, my question is, can I update i9300 from 4.1.2 (XXELLA) to any 4.3 version or does it have to be for specific country?
I am curently running XXELLA that is for Poland, I was on XXEMC2 that is for Slovenia, and I am from Croatia, also to mention that original is XXEMC2 from my phone.
Also, is it safe for me to download 4.1.2 BTU XXEMG4 (UK) and flash over my current XXELLA, can i brick my efs? (I think it is an additional option to upgrade from btu version to 4.3).
Will i brick my EFS by updating to official stock 4.3 via Odin? I wan't to get to 4.3 version that supports OTA to 4.3 version MK6 (I heard it has many fixes), but I am scared to lose my network signal.
To sum up, what firmware do i need to get the MK6 update, is there any except BTU, and is it safe to update via Odin so my EFS won't brick.
Thanks.
You need to understand the basics before you do anything, sticky guides in general forum will guide you.
If you aren't confident then wait a week or two until MK6 is released in your country.

It's a good option to wait, it isn't even official for download to flash via Odin, I am just curious over what will or will not happen, so I'm just searching for some direct answers, when I read all those stickies and threads I got very confused.
Can i just ask, will anything happen with network signal or efs if i flash XXEMG4 4.1.2 BTU or MJ9 BTU over my XXELLA with Odin? Just to know..

I'm from Croatia too, and i have MJ9 BTU since day one and my phone is functioning perfectly, so no need to worry about network signal etc.
My recommendation is that you flash a MJ9 ROM with some custom kernel wich will remove the well known wake-up lag and battery drain that MJ9 has. Or you can just wait official OTA update for Croatia if you want. Personally, I moved away from official ROM 10 days after I got my S3. But as the boomboomer said before: read all the stickies to be 100% sure what are you doing
Hi, Before flashing anything or attempting to do anything make sure you read this and back up your EFS, If your already know about the risks then carry on but this is very helpfull. Thanks

Ok, I'll try to flash BTU MJ9 over current XXELLA and will see what happens, I already have backed up my efs and also nand backup, but i think i can lose my efs/no network because my IMEI was repaired with z3x box, I heard that if it is repaired with z3x i cannot upgrade nor downgrade anymore, will see what happens, if anything goes wrong i have z3x so no need to worry i think, i'll also try to flash mg4 modem or patch it with Ariza if i will lose my signal..
There is a thread with patched modems for those that previously used ariza patch, which should enable you to connect to your network.

I found only for 4.0 and 4.1.2 but not for 4.3 modems, and they are not patched, for patched i read that ariza patches modem but that it doesn't work with 4.3 android.
Can You please provide me the link to thread of patched modems?
Thanks!
Edit: I saw some patched modems for 4.3 but there is not MJ9 for i9300, also i tried extracting the modem.bin and patch it with zuluman patch and install through odin (put it under Phone section) but it fails, it says in the log something with bootloader, please provide me the patched M9 modem.
Edit2: Succesfully flashed patched MJ9, now IMEI is null/null, i'm getting really tired of this, going to take it to local servicer to update it for me, i think repairing imei with z3x box got it all messed up. And also finnaly i tried flashing the original modem back that gave me my IMEI back and than patch with ARIZA, nope, imei was 0049 etc.

[Q] Please help, I can't find clear answer

Hello
My friend bought GS3 months ago in Arabic country with ICS 4.0.4 installed. When I saw the box, I found that the GS3 is a grey market product. It has Region Lock label written in Russian language on the box and the ROM is pre-rooted CWM Custom ROM
Now, Kies dose not upgrade this version and he wishes to have Arabic stock ROM 4.3 if possible. What are the safest steps to do?
- If I download and flash Arabic stock ROM, will I loose modem connectivity?
- Do I need to backup and restore EFS data if I flash stock ROM?
- Do I need root to restore EFS data/modem driver after flashing STOCK ROM?
- Should I flash custom ROM instead of Stock ROM?
I want a safe way, I don't wish to cause network/EFS loss to the device?
I read a lot but came to no conclusion.. please help

Thanks for reply. I read that some people lost the IMEI when they flashed STOCK ROM 4.3? as I said the device came from Russian market and I want to flash Middle east ROM?
Which JB version is save to flash and won't loose the IMEI?

If u are rly just tat scared to lose ur imei. Go kies and do the firmware recovery. U will get stock rom automatically.

Depends on the phone history on what will happen on upgrade to 4.3, sim lock may return or imei lost due to patched efs folder. No way to know until you get flash, so backup efs now.
4.1.2 EMG4 is when efs format changed, anything before this shouldn't cause too many issues.

So if I upgrade to 4.1.2 before EMG4 , I won't have EFS/IMEI problem?
All I have to do to flash midle east ROM and then to find the Modem driver and install it through odin?

I need to find modem driver in tar format first?
Odin flashes tar
CWM and other custom recovery flashes zips .
