Buying advice - AT&T LG Optimus G

My beloved Galaxy Nexus died on me and I am looking for a new phone. I am considering picking up an unlocked Optimus G E970. I am currently in India, but i expect to be in the US sometime in November. My carrier of choice in the US is T-Mobile.
Need some advice from experienced users :
1. I need usb tethering to work. From what I read here, tethering is disabled by default. Is this true of only the on - contract devices or is it disabled for the off-contract devices as well?
2. I have read the numerous threads here, but i dare ask again. Seeing that T-Mobile LTE is lit in Indianapolis (where I expect to be in Nov), can I expect to get both LTE and HSPA+?

I'm just a regular user. I need a decent phone to get me by the next few months.
The plan is to buy a new phone - Nexus 5, Note 3, Moto-X, S4 GPE- after reaching the US. I'll hand over the Optimus g to my wife at that point.

HERE ARE CHOICES HAVE A LOOK

http://www.91mobiles.com/sony-xperia-l-price-in-india
http://www.91mobiles.com/lg-optimus-g-e970-price-in-india
.. I PREFER SAMSUNG BRANDS ACTUALLY .. BECAUSE THEY ARE MORE RELIABLE AND WIDELY USED BY THE ANDROID USERS SO IT GIVES MORE COMPATIBILITY WITH APPS AND MORE
YOU CAN CHECK THOSE PHONES ON YOU TUBE LIKE HOW THEY LOOK OUT OF THE BOX... :good:

Of course you can get LTE and HSA+. Where there is no LTE, what else but HSPA+ used? Unless you live really in the boondocks and only have 3G/HSPA. This supports whatever AT&T supports or if you have Sprint version. No idea about the International, though I thought I read the international LTE is not the same as one used in North America.
- You can also flash AT&T or Sprint Radio.
USB tethering I believe is enabled on unlocked phones, with custom roms at least.
I agree with Viskon. Why wait for more power hungry, battery monster eating phones later when you can get the Moto X now? As it is, it has the most software features and a great battery life. For gaming and etc, it still has the Adreno 320 which is the same on LGOG. Though it's only a dual core, but it should be the same Krait v2 core used on the LGOG. I don't think quad-core is needed for Android right now. The Moto X believe has the 2GB of ram for multi-tasking. And with Android 4.3 support it has the updated GL ES 3.0 support.
- Phones I list below and you have mentioned just have better, bigger, more power hungering hardware specs that are unneeded in an Android Phone.
- Moto X has the software features, good enough camera and more ease of use design. That's the impression I've gotten from the reviews and write ups on the Moto X.
To me the SnapDragon 800 just means it will be hotter and drain battery even faster and meanwhile can't think of any app that needs that kind of heat/power other than maybe a game, in which case, seriously get a Tablet with PowerVR or a gaming laptop.
Other phones to look at would be the Sony Xperia Z and Oppo 5, both of which have great specs, way better camera than either LGOG, Nexus 4 and more than likely Nexus 5, and Moto X. And both have screens that will unlikely be beaten by any new phone coming, the 1080p IPS and sLCD3 with ridiculous PPI are already overkill for 5" screens.
- Benefit is both Sony and Oppo are dev friendly and well supported by all the major dev/mod projects.
- Oppo uses dual CMOS sensor! And Sony uses great sensor and lots of adjustments for low light pictures, HDR, etc. Both phones make camera on LG, Nexus and Samsung look pitiful, only Nokia can top them.

Thanks for the insights.
I am trying not to get into custom roms. I need a phone that has tethering enabled out of the box.
I have also been looking at the Xperia ZL. It seems to be compatible with just about any network on the planet. But it does cost a fair bit more than the LGOG.
LG seems to have dumped their unsold AT&T LGOGs in India, and these are going for cheaper than Nexus 4s.
The Moto-X is not a phone I can get right now, since it is a US only phone at this point.

If you pay the carrier for tethering and it's included in your contract is the only way you're going to get tethering right out of the box.

What are your honest opinions now that the OG has been unlocked
Anyone actually do a hands on comparison here?
Mine is that we now have a Nexus 4 with LTE and SD Card.

Maybe, but a lot of the nexus development will carry over easily.

I'm on the fence between this and the nexus 4. I was at the at&t store the other day holding the OG and it wasnt that bad. I know quadrant scores are nothing to make a final decision on but was impressed, it was getting similar scores to the htc one x+ averaging no less than 7500. The note 2 couldnt get that high. Its true that the led notification is only one color? I thought it was RGB? I couldnt really test that at that store.
Would ROM's from our Nexus 4's really work on the OG? Loving the N4 but I also like the OG.

My justification on getting the LG Optimus G on At&t (it being on At&t is an important distinction):
1.) The phone is the basis for the Google Nexus 4, save it's design is nicer. I perfer the blocky lock. This also means it is currently hardware wise the strongest SoC in a phone on the market. This will change within the hour (j/k) but for what it's worth you have that.
2.) 2gb RAM. This is important particularly in the Android domain, as the more RAM you have the less application crashing and home screen crashing you will have. This crashing behavior is apparent on my current mini pro (only has 512 meg RAM) and the iPad 1 (only has 256 meg RAM) which both crash almost constantly.
3.) Expandable memory. It has a microSD slot. The Nexus 4 does not, and the Optimus G international and Sprint versions do not.
4.) LTE. This is nice but not really that serious to me I've been happy with what the mini has been able to provide (3g+). Still i should be able to get faster speeds on my phone the my home connection.
5.) the phone has already been rooted.
6.) unlocking of the bootloader is being worked on, and there are clear signs it can be accomplished. If this were to happen you could put whatever ROM you want on the phone. The obvious choice, being the Nexus 4 ROM. Since the hardware is almost identical, minus wireless charging in the G, this would almost a be plug and play option. The robust XDA crowd will have it sorted in now time. Which means you'd have a Nexus 4 on a better more expandable platform, with LTE.
7.) Price. Subsidized it's $100-150 cheaper. Since you'll be paying for the wireless plan anyway why not lock yourself in? That said, I FULLY support Google's initiative by making the phone affordable, unlocked, and off contract. I believe anything that gives the consumer more choice should be applauded. The wireless carrier systems in the US are just out dated and stupid.
So I wrote this before the unlock was solid, and but now that we know it's unlocked and custom ROMs are a go this phone makes an even better choice. So now you can have it all.

Minus the development support. I understand the bootloader has been currently unlocked, but it's definitely gonna be a while til we see the devs start jumping on this. Just my opinion. Trust me, I am really hoping this device takes off. Getting tired of Samsung and lack of source for the Exynos phones.
Is there a list of devs that will be supporting this device?
My N4 won't be here til 3 to 5 week says Google. But since LTE launched in my area, this phone seems to the best choice for me.
In the meantime, good luck guys, I will be following with great interest.

I think there is going to be a ton of development for this device. For one, anything done on the Nexus 4 will be trival to port over (look at the history of the Nexus S and the Galaxy S). Secondly, it's a flagship phone launched globlly on every major carrier. A crapload of people will have this phone.
The biggest barrier to development I see right now is there are 4 different development forums for this phone and it's ALREADY splintering... I wish they would keep just 1 development forum as once it gets going the same ROMs will work on all the variants, nearly guarenteed. The S3 had the same issue with way too many splintered dev. forums.

The Galaxy S1 phones were fragmented too but we got CM ROMs pretty nicely. The Vibrant died off fast but the Captivate stayed strong. So as long as the Optimus G gets a decent fanbase of developers we should be ok. I'm worried about too many people flocking to Nexus 4 given its price though.
If it is really trivial to port ROMs over, we need some bare minimum support on our side to make sure development goes smoothly at least.

The phones have similar guts, not the same guts.
It's like putting a ROM on an Inspire4g when the ROM is supposed to be for a Desire HD.
Fixes will be necessary in order to have functionality.

similar? they should be the exact same... same SoC and i believe same camera. i'll have to do more research on this but it should just take tweaking a few files that's very very simple if you've ported ROMs before (i have).
edit: yes, the cam module should be the same. the modem *should* be the only thing different.

G2 or Note 3

I'm about to upgrade (through sprint) and I'm trying to decide which to get.
My pros and cons.
Note 3:
Pro- 5.7 screen with no software buttons, expandable memory, (maybe care about battery and stylus)
Con- Camera with (no OIS), does not operate on all three bands of Sprints LTE (actually just one band)
G2:
Pro- Able to use it in an armband when jogging, better camera, [email protected] PPI, Tri-band LTE for Sprint, new to me android skin, IR blaster(I would probably use this more than a stylus)
Con- Dev support compared to Note 3, software buttons (could be fixed with PIE after rooting), cluttered notification drop down (my opinion), no SD
Not trying to start a flame war just want to get opinions.
Can you handle the size? Is the Note 3 gonna be locked down due to Knox? (been few weeks since I checked). How much do you think you'd use the S-Pen?
I am loving just using Pie as my nav buttons, so much space on my screen
Also you get an additional GB of RAM which prob evens out with TW bloat
Home button was the most annoying thing when I had my Note 2 and S4 jfyi
What did I miss that people hate software buttons?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
See I think if I knew for sure the G2 would get dev support for sprint to allow custom navigation buttons or pie, and allow me to get rid part of what is in the notification panel.
Sent from my glitter pony
The Note 3 also has an IR blaster FYI.
Yeah, the main question between those two choices has to be "Can I use a phone that big everyday" I couldn't get used to the Note 2 and gave it to my wife to carry in her purse. So for me, I don't care how freakin cool and awesome the Note 3 is, I can't use it. I may get one for my wife for Christmas though.
The G2 is just much easier to put in your pocket, put in a belt holster, and hold.
Can't stand the home button on Samsungs and you can't get rid of it, at least with mods you can remove nav if you want to. There are other ways to navigate with pie, gestures etc, I actually don't mind nav but I know others like to reclaim the real estate. Compared to a phone like the G2 then I prefer LG because it is easier to handle and if I am wanting a phablet I compare it to the Sony Experia Z Ultra where the Sony wins with 6.4 inch to 5.7 and water proofed. I won't get into all the specs since they all sport the latest and greatest and I think most of us would enjoy owning any of them.
To be fair, Sprint's Note 2 didn't have the best dev support. It did for the first few months, but quickly died off by about April/May-ish. Yes there are a few devs still putting out roms now and then, but it's really quiet compared to any other phone I've owned.
I'm still on Note 2 and love the size and all, but I think my next phone will be G2... triband is too important to avoid if you plan on keeping your phone at least a year, unless you are always in an LTE place already.
I love software keys. I also hate the home key on the note and s4.

I have always used Samsung. I find LG 's UI refreshing compared to Tw.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
To the OP, I have Sprint as well and am looking to upgrade and to me the LG G2 wins hands down over the Note 3 because of the triband LTE support by itself. Now depending on where you live but since I am in Los Angeles, it is a no brainer that you should be buying triband LTE devices at this point. The LTE 800 and LTE 2600 are being built as we speak and its only a matter of time before those networks light up by early 2014. Also the LG G2 has spectacular battery life which is a huge draw (5.2 inch with 3000 maH battery vs. 5.7 inch with 3200 maH battery.)
I was a huge supporter of the Note 3 and I probably would have gotten it if it had triband LTE because it had all the specs I wanted in a large screen phone but I was willing to give it up because of the lack of triband LTE. I have a Wimax phone which Wimax uses 2500 MHz, I just couldn't deal another 2 years with 4G at high frequency. Wimax was great when I could use it but when I was out of range it sucked. I want to be able to use my darn LTE indoors in malls which is why LTE 800 will be very key and LTE 2600 will be great outdoors to offload to for very fast speeds when the LTE 1900 highway lane starts to get filled up with GS4, Note 2, Note 3, GS3, HTC One, HTC Evo 4G LTE, LG Optimus G, Moto Photon Q users sucking up the bandwidth speeds.
If you can enjoy imagining yourself using a stylus for most of your use, then the note 3. The performance is so similar as well as the UI, that it really comes down to the size factor. For my hands, the note 3 is too big, and the G2 is about as big as it gets while still being comfortable for use as a phone.
I'm also on Sprint. I was debating on which one to get.
But then I went to an AT&T store and put the G2 and Note 2 side by side. The Note 2 looked huge next to it, but the screen size difference was barley noticeable. I can't use the Note 2 with one hand. That's what made the decision for me.
The Note 3 is pretty much the same size as Note 2.
Triband. Your signal will thank you.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
the only thing that make my cry about G2 is dev support... samsung is always good with dev support...
I have a G2 that I have to return by the 4th of next month to Verizon. I already decide a while ago that I was just renting the G2 for 14 days for the cost of the 35.00 restocking fee, but now I'm undecided. This phone has been great for the week I've had it. Plus its less than half the price of the Note 3. MY biggest gripe right now is accessories for the VZ version. I like accessories and the the Note 3 kills the G2 in that department.
I'll probably be undecided till the day I need to return the phone.

I wasn't necessarily wanting to do a direct comparison. Just the things based on my opinions that mattered and see how others opinion and decisions were concluded.
Ie. maybe I wasn't thinking about one thing on one device that someone else had and that would help guide my decision.
I don't think I'd trade knock on for any phone...the note is too big to justify half an inch diagonal. IMHO

Ah I see. We'll if you opened the thread in this forum then you've already made your decision, I guess you just wanna make sure you make the right one. I would suggest going to the Note 3 forum and ask there too. Then see which phone you are leaning towards more and get that. One thing is for sure, both are amazing and arguably the two best android devices at the moment. I think you'll be happy with either. If I had to pick personally, it'll be the Note 3.

They're all vastly different. Depends on if you like the UI of each and what you plan on doing with it. Are you more concerned about performance, battery life, ability to customize (root/custom roms/themes/etc), ability to add SD card, or...? But the Moto G is probably the best budget phone out right now. It's a great jack of all trades with decent speed, battery life is fine for most, good screen for the $, Moto is more committed to timely software updates, etc. Camera probably is the weaker point, but at the price, you have to sacrifice something and the other 2 probably aren't any better on that front though have not had a chance to test them. Also something to think about, do all of these phones have the appropriate data bands to work properly on the network / carrier you plan on using?

I doubt that Lenovo will mess up the process THAT much, knowing that if they want to really get a foothold in sales in the US and other places that keeping Motorola on the right track is important. Only time will tell though. For the time being though, it has 4.4.2 Kit Kat and there isn't any important updates that are going to be out for a little while at least, and once there are, I'm sure developers will have updates as fast if not faster than MotoVo.
As far as durable, seems pretty solid. I've seen it survive some falls to the floor, but not so much on concrete, oddly enough. It's even water resistant to some extent.

go for moto g if you are power hungry , Xperia L has a better interface full of features but laggy , htc desire 500 is not that great but still it has blink feed

What's the best budget smartphone?

I'm willing to spend up 200$, used flagship smartphones count too. I'm looking at the moto g so far.

I second the Moto G. However, for $200 you might be able to score a used HTC One M7 (if you're really lucky), which has great developer support.
Second that

I second both of these.
Definitely check out swappa because they have some fantastic deals for some stunning devices, but go for the moto g if you want a brand new device. The community is awesome and there are plenty of roms and mods to make your device work like a charm.

Thanks for the info on Swappa.
Do you have recommendations for clean and efficient custom ROMs for the Moto G? I've been spending all my time with the HTC One, but my wife has been complaining about issues with her stock Moto G.
For a new phone it's hands down the Moto G.
As for used, you could also score a N4 if you're lucky. With the release of the N6, maybe even the N5.
Besides the Moto G, you should also consider the value-for-money Sony M2

Like I said before, when it comes to the best budget smartphone available in the market today, Moto G win hands down. The Forbes magazine recently put it this way: 'Motorola Moto G vs Everything Else: There's no competition, this is the number one smartphone. As an all-round handset, as the handset that is going to be rated as above average and exceeds expectations in almost every area, one cannot look past the Moto G in the current crop of smartphones.'

Their newer Ascend line is great. The Honor line is very affordable as well.

I would say the moto g 4g LTE also but if your top budget is $200 I would pick the One Plus One best flagship of 2014 and all round brilliant phone
Note 2.
Old, but it's still getting official Lollipop, (Which is quite unique for a 2.5 year old phone) has great support, 720p, 5.5", 2GB RAM, Quadcore, 8MP and an Spen.

Yeah it's too bad about the alpha but it seems right now people want 5 inch screens so it loses out on that. I would recommend the S5 or HTC one m8, both have great dev support. But the best idea is to wait for spring/summer when the S6 and the new HTC is released

Since quite a lots of android users switched-to/switched-back Iphone now because of 4.7"/5.5" Iphone launched. You really don't expect any android discussion board will be as busy as in the old age, the time has gone. Another major reason is nowadays people slowly upgrade their smartphone because hardware is started to mature. When you look on XDA, you will know many new phones development board isn't that active now.
I'm now with Z1 Compact and also thinking to upgrade to Z3 Compact or Alpha or S6(if it manage to smaller than S5 in size a bit) in around March/April. I think mostly I will pick Z3c or Alpha because I believe S6 would be too expensive to me and excess my budget but I will put an eye on it. Z4/Z4c/Z4U is almost sure to hit a big delay now, they will all announce only on May/June sometimes. So, I decided to don't wait them now.
If you like Alpha, just go get it. It is a rare Samsung phone though almost no development here but the phone itself is very capable without any support. If you want a little bit bigger community and need a microSD slot, then pick Z3c.

Switching to Iphone from more matured system? Iphone was good and impressive like 3 generations ago when android wasn't so matured system, nowdays I don't see a reason for people who own for example a S4 to switch to Iphone.
The latter part is very true, a 100€ phone can handle basically anything that basic user throws at it. And the devs and other people who can get more out of their current older phones trough custom roms, don't really have reasons for upgrade.

You gonna search more information. Iphone market share worldwide is same with Samsung in 2014 Q4 and already excess Samsung now in 2015 Q1 so Apple is the No.1 smartphone company again now.
System-wise is always Android better but since Iphone borrowed more and more functions from Android in every generation OS, the gap in different will just become smaller in long run. But on the other hand, Iphone still owns the most best apps and even both platform got the same one, IOS one usually performs better.

Only G3 or S5 or M8 have active development I can name(Z3/Z3c isn't active coz most people still using Z1/Z1c/Z2) but M8 camera is really suck I don't suggest it. And you don't like plastic samsung so no S5 I think, only G3 leave.
S6 will use Exynos and no S810, this time S6 development should not be very active as well because Exynos is harder to support. G4 will also hit a big delay becoz GFlex2 will out first on March/April, G4 won't appear until May/June much like Z4.
I feel bad right now cus im hoping to see alot of roms for this great device but i guese i was wrong.Im not upset or anything but this is why we buy android phones instead of iphone we need to change to somthing new
