Is this possible at all? Or already done, maybe? would it be an app that could possibly run and replace this action or does it require a rom modification to do it?
I'd prefer specific apps to always be in my home long-press popup than just the most recent ones (ex: mail, web browser, twitter, facebook etc the ones that i am typically trying to get to )
Any thoughts?
I wouldn't mind having menu long press go to the dialer app so we can have a dedicated dialer button we can use when we have other apps open. Long pressing the menu button brings up the quick search bar which we already have a button for.

long pressing the menu button brings up the keyboard ... not the search...
Long press of menu brings up search on the vibrant, try it. (i read another thread that this isn't the same on other devices)
I assume that given that Vlingo can take over the long press of the search and home replacements can take over the long press of home, an app could be written to take over the long press of home to change its action as well?
I'm not a programer so I wouldn't have a clue of how to write an app that replaces that home/recent apps pop up to allow your own choice of shortcuts
Oh yeah, I guess I was wrong... I have to many devices to keep track of the differences...

I *kind-of* got what I wanted via the app "App Launcher" (link: http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.talondesigns.quicklaunch - $1.99)
It looks identical to the popup that you get with a long press of the home button - you can select the shortcuts you want to be in it, BUT it is a long press of the search key instead. Functionally, it is what I want, but I'd prefer to take over the home button action rather than using the search button, as I had that one assigned to Vlingo.
I've tried nearly every multitasking switcher on the market and I still cant find one that works correctly. Is there a switcher that goes to ADW on single tap home and goes to the switcher on either long press or double tap?
heres a list of what I've tried (issues are in parentheses)
powerstrip (too small, single tap access)
Quickdesk pro (doesn't work, makes screen flash black and go crazy)
perfect task switcher (single tap access, wonky)
MultiTask Manager (single tap access)
TaskOS (no home button setting)
Underground (takes over the screen, isn't really a task switcher, ugly list)
Appswipe (clunky, ugly, paid to set to home button)
Softkeys- Would be awesome, if I could get the settings to work as advertised (see below)
Prehome (best task switcher BUT single tap access)
Softkeys:
Softkeys has an option for setting single tap home (ADW) and then an option for long press home (PreHome). This would be the perfect solution, but for some reason the long press home doesn't work no matter what I do. Any Ideas?
The Ideal task switcher for me would be anything simple (a bar or box with icons) that could be brought up with double or long click home. If you know of any I'd love to try them out.
I would like to figure this out as well. Haven't seen anything about it around here

Softkeys works for me, I have it set for single tap home and double tap softkeys. I don't believe Softkeys supports long button presses, I think that option is referring to the virtual home button that Softkeys presents on screen when called up.

Yes, it does not support long press on the physical button, that would be nice... As said above, it's a long-tap on the Home button on the popup.
Any ideas if we are using button Savior instead of soft keys?

Powerstrip does single or double tap. I currently have mine setup with ADW EX. Single tap to Homescreen and double tap to invoke.
I might use power strip then, is there a way to make it larger? As for the long press on home, hopefully we'll see cm on the nc
EDIT:
I got powerstrip working pretty well, but as I said before I wouldn't mind it being slightly bigger, also the "recent apps" folder has a few issues of its own. When a large game (or grooveshark) is in the recent apps and you try to launch it you get an "activity no found" error.
I found PreHome to work best.
I have the physical button mapped to PreHome, then when have PreHome open SoftKeys.
I like button savior. It pull the last 6 apps that u have used when you long press the soft home button.

Try swipepad beta... I dig it.
Works from anywhere in an app or not

You may want to check out Taskswitcher (free). Once set up it uses single press on physical home key to invoke recent apps list and allows you to set up your own home app for double tap. Long press is not supported I don't think. If anyone knows of apps that allow setting long press actions (recent apps or otherwise) please share. I did notice in the DEV forum that someone made a custom Froyo version with custom home button behavior including long press so maybe someone could share how to set that up in 2.1 if thats possible.

Thanks for this tip! I replaced SK with BS a day or two after rooting, and had no idea this functionality was built into BS!
If you turn off the sk service check mark you can double press the nook button and still use bs

SK Service is the SoftKeys service. If it's running, you get a curly arrow in a circle that allows you to bring up the home, back, menu, and search buttons. It should be installed by default if you autonooter. Otherwise, it's available in the Dev section of the forum.
I have the sgs2 for a few months, Im very satisfied with this phone, But there is a thing I cannot live with, THE HOME BUTTON, I dont know why? but a I dont like it at all, Ive been proving some apps to avoid it, someones like button savior, swipepad and wave launcher (This one is absolutely great).
I just wanna know: is there a way to remap LONG PRESS "BACK KEY" to go to home?, just like long press menu does to go to search!. I proved BUTTONREMAPPING but it doesnt have the "long press" options. I was searching and now I know that files on /system/usr/keylayout and /system/usr/keychars setup the keys on the phone, indeed /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl shows the default capacitive buttons setup, but I dont have enough knowledge to change "LONG PRESS" options on this keys.
so:
Some of you guys know about it?
It is possible or not setup LONG PRESS BACK OR MENU KEY on SGS2?
I would also love to know how to remap those buttons. Also double-click home. I am running the simple clean room (based on stock rom)

Is there a mod or kernel that allows us to customize the capacitive button actions (e.g. add a long press action to the menu button or change the short press action for the search button)? I haven't come across anything in my searching, but I haven't seen anything that explicitly says it's not possible either.
Check out the LaunchKey App...it maybe what you are looking for.
I can't post links...but you can find it over on the "Android Apps and Games" xda forum
Thanks man. I was hoping for something that would add long presses to the menu and back buttons too, but the custom menu option for the search key is sweet. Thanks again.

I always want the left capacitive key to perform the function - switch apps ( recent apps) because long pressing the home button to call out switch apps function is time consuming (it takes about 2 seconds) and need too much effort ( the button is so tight).
I googled around and figure out how to do that. I think a lot of people will have interest in such changes, so I would post here.
Actually, it is easy. What you need is a rooted phone and a root explorer( an app)
Then, in the root explorer, open /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl in Text Editor, scroll down and find key 139 ( this is the key you need to change) change the word" menu" to " APP_SWITCH" after the key 139. save and exit then reboot.
This changes change the left capacitive button function to open switch apps function. Of course , you will lose the menu function.
Hope it helps.
Could you tell how would be the exact commands to make the buttons "back", "home(already is)" and "menu" respectively from left to right?

OK, originally, the lines in the generic.kl for the 3 buttons should be like this:
key 139 MENU WAKE_DROPPED
key 102 MOVE_HOME
key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED
If you want to change function of the buttons, you just need to know the function name, in my case, I want to change the function of the left capatcitive button function from menu to switch apps. Therefore I serach around the web and found that the function name is APP_SWITCH, then, I just need to replace the "MENU" to "APP_SWITCH" in the Generic.kl file in order to change the function.
After the changes, the line should be as follow:
key 139 APP_SWITCH WAKE_DROPPED
So, same theory, you could switch the functions of those keys, for example, if you want to switch the menu and back key, all you need to do is change to :
key 139 BACK WAKE_DROPPED
key 158 MENU WAKE_DROPPED
In addition, the word" wake_dropped" means that the key will function when your device is awake, that means, when your phone is not awake ( screen is off), the key will not function.
So,theoretically, if you want the keys to function when the phone is not awake ( when the screen is off), you could change the word" wake_dropped" to "WAKE" ( I have not tried, you could try that out). By doing so, you could wake the phone and perform the key function at the same time even when your phone is not awake.

how about keeping menu function
but long press will initiate switch apps?
This would be great :good:
Actually, mounting function to a long press capacitive key is not that simple, therefore I think it is not worthy to do so.
Alternatively, I would suggest installing virtual button apps such as button savior and add the menu function to it.

I would like to be able to do that long press thing too, in the meantime I use LMT to get to my multitasking, that's definitely a lot snappier than the home button

Hi, do you know how to make this work on Tmobile Galaxy S3 rooted official firmware 4.3 ?
I edit the file, save, exit, reboot but it didn't work. Menu button still behave the same, open Generic.kl file to check, new text is there. Don't understand.
Thanks!

Sorry I am using omni 4.4.2 ROM now, there is already an option to assign functions to the keys, so I have no need to do in the other way. Can't help.
This works as a charm, however Android does not recognize that we no longer have a menu button. The tree dots in Chrome are not present for example. Is there a way of telling the system that no physical menu botton is there, so that apps show the soft menu?
Thanx!

Actually i would suggest installing xposed framework and use the module menubegone to performe same function-remap menu key to switch app key.
In addition it forced every apps to show the 3 dots menu button on the top left corner. That means the menu function is no longer needed. Try it out guys. This is the simplest way now.
