Hello, I have just bought an unlocked optimus l9 p760 on ebay.
It appears that lg released update for this phone. It goes from ice cream sandwich to jellybean with an unlocked bootloader (please correct me if I am mistaken). I have never owned an android phone before and have no experience whatsoever. From what I have read it appears you simply have to install a program on windows directly from lg, connect your phone and it automatically updates. My question is: Will updating this phone to jelly bean remove my carrier unlock? I want to be able to keep using any carrier I please. Thank you for your assistance.
EDIT: I live in New York. (It seems p760 according to what I have read here is european version of phone) Do not know if this interferes with updating in any way.

I'm not sure what do you mean cause at first you speak about unlock bootloader, later about carrier unlock (which are two diffrent things) but if you can now use any carrier now after update you will be able to use any too.

1. Jb update has locked bootloader (unlocking bootloaders are mainly use for flashing custom roms)
2. You can update ota (over the air) to jb. If not then do your method.
3. You probably bought the phone with carrier unlocked. If not then bootloader is unlocked.

so just to be clear... If it is carrier unlocked and I do the update, it stays that way right?

Yes, but better do FOTA update you will don't have most of the bloatware that way (but remember that you will lose settings, apps etc). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36351786

Hi,
I'm using a sim unlocked (not rooted) HTC Amaze phone with T-mobile; previously used with Windmobile Canada. It seems I cannot get the official update from T-mobile since my software version is different.
Is there any way I can get the official ICS, without rooting or voiding my warranty?
Thanks.

No, you have to be running T-Mobile software in order to receive an OTA from T-Mobile.
Hello, my question is very basic, but I have no experience with android updates. I have a Galaxy S2 model GT-I9100P (NFC), unlocked because I've used it with other companies, I'm not root, the phone has ICS version 4.0.3. My firmware does not support upgrade via Kies. My questions: if I update the firmware to Jelly Beam or others (Odin?), my phone can be locked (SIM-Locked)?, My phone is factory unlocked?
no, it will remain unlocked.
WARNING!!! successfully locked my factory unlocked phone after upgrading it to 4.1.2

I upgraded my phone with the official jellybean firmware released for Spain and my factory unlocked phone is now Sim locked!!!
So im not sure if you should continue with it. And i haven't been able to find any help with about the "Sim network unlock pin" either. The only info i've read is about apps that I'll have to buy that will unlock the phone provided it's rooted!!
Someone with good experience can explain this?
Help please !!!

Don't panic, upgrading to Official (or even Leaked) JB 4.1.2 leads your phone to lock again
There was an app here named GalaxSim unlock that solved the problem for me (and many people), it was free but I think the author removed it because it is available on the playstore now and can unlock your phone for around 2$
Look for it in the playstore, you can download a free version that checks your device and tells you if it is unlockable, if yes, you have an in-app option that will unlock your device for the above price
Take a look and I hope this helps
PS: It needs a rooted phone, so you'll have to flash an appropriate kernel (If you are on JB, try Phil's Kernel, it is available here on xda)
EDIT:
I was wrong, you can download it from this thread (On the first post)
I bought a P769 to use internationally and have no T-mobile plan (I use Sprint in the USA). I want to get CM 10.1 on it. What are my options? From what I understand, I need to get the OTA Jellybean update in order to unlock in order to flash CM10.1.
Thanks.

There are plenty of tutorials available. Read a bit.
You will need to have T-Mobile unlock the device for non-T-Mobile sim cards.

You don't need OTA Jelltbean to unlock bootloader and flash CM10.1, but you need a unlock code to unlock the network/SIM lock to use other SIM than T-Mobile. You can buy the unlock code from eBay.
I don't believe P769 can work on Sprint.

I already unlocked the phone's SIM for international use. That's not my question. (eBay solution was used). Of course not to be used on Sprint.
Can someone at least point me to which tutorial to follow? I'll tell you what I tried [GUIDE][JB] Unlock Bootloader and FASTER Root L9 Method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221102. When I did the adb reboot oem-unlock command, the phone just restarted. I assumed this was because I have Ice Cream Sandwich which does not have the oem-unlock command.
I am sorry if I am asking a stupid question. I assumed the guides on here required the JB update which does have an unlocked bootloader apparently.
Is this the one to use? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198114. This one suggests that we should wait for JB update. Is there any way to manually install the JB update instead of going through what seems to be a difficult procedure?

As kevev said, read a bit. Maybe a bit more.
Regarding qingz's answer to your Sprint information it is easily assumed that you were trying to use Sprint since you mentioned it. There are a lot of questions by a lot of people in a wide range of expertise. Always think of how what you ask will be perceived/interpreted by others to get the best answer for yourself.
Keep a humble attitude of learning and you'll go far, if not people won't answer our questions if we come off brash and know-it-all-ish.
To root, I just did using cmahendra's offline flashing method. It is easily on the first page of the L9 forum. It is a beast to accomplish, but go for it. Please note, when you get to step 11 you cannot "sit back with your hands folded behind your head" as it says, you have to go *back* to the original instructions and copy/paste a file. I share this because that part was not clear, and cost me about 5 or 6 hours of time with re-doing the steps over and over again.
Good luck!
Here is a tutorial for unlocking the P769 Bootloader:

Maybe an easier tutorial(I have not tried this one):

Make sure you follow to a tee, read original bl unlock thread and make sure your wifi is on and connected to internet. Wait at least 1 hour before issuing command.
Hello All,
I am planning for Jelly Bean upgrade on my LG Optimus G [AT&AT] through LGNPST. My phone is already unlocked for other carriers. Will the unlock be retained after the upgrade ?

Hi, I had the same worry as I had bought my phone from eBay. I can tell you that mine is still unlocked after LGNPST and flashing the different ROMs and Kernels, but your phone could be unlocked in a different way (probably not, but I am not sure, my phone came unlocked), so I cannot guarantee it. Hope this helped
Thanks for the information. Mine also I got unlocked from Ebay. Hope it will work.
Regards
Jacob
I was wondering how I could unlock my e970 without using a non att SIM card? I have looked for mmi codes to get the phone to ask but have not had any success.
LG Unlock
Dowload LG Unlock from the play store,t he code is almost $13 but you'll get it in 30 minutes
When i had my galaxy s7 on sprint i was able to flash other carrier roms and unlocked version roms through samsung flash tool .Can this be done with lg phones on some kind of flash tool ? Sorry for question just was wondering i use to flash unlocked version on my sprint v30 to have a bloat free phone
So the question I have is this. If you are going to root and unlock the phone anyway, why not just remove the bloatware on the phone? Why concern yourself with other carriers?
If all the carriers are equal as far as communication frequencies are concerned, then unlocking the phone is all you really need. Once unlocked (you don't even need to root for this) you can go to any carrier.
I could do that without root. And flashing unlocked version rom has no carrier bloat. Also i said nothing about rooting

If memory serves and may not, so unless something has changed, flashing any function on an android phone requires root access.

"Unlock" has different meanings in a dev forum. You mean carrier unlocked, SIM card unlocked. Not bootloader unlock.
U.S. Cellular has SIM card unlocked, carrier unlocked version. The "open market" version which will be released in early December will be both carrier unlocked and will be eligible for official bootloader unlock.
You basically want to convert your phone to another phone? Yes, with Samsung phones you can do something like that with Odin. I have a friend who bought UK Galaxy S8 and flashed Australian ROM (with Samsung Pay) through Odin. He's not rooted and doesn't want root.
There is an LG flash tool, to flash KDZ and TOT firmware:
http://www.droidviews.com/download-lg-flash-tool-to-flash-kdz-and-tot-firmwares/
I know with the V20 H910, once Dirty Santa was patched in order for someone to root their phone, they had to basically flash their phone to an older Freedom ROM, which was not yet patched, then install some engineering mode module, and then run Dirty Santa.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3664500
So, some of what you're are asking can be done. But that ROM flashing was temporary and on some carriers you would lose signal. It was just a step to getting the bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed. Then the regular H910 ROM was reinstalled, and all signal functionally restored.
____
NOTE: this is a very simplified answer to the question. There are even "patched" versions of the tools to allow you to flash versions you aren't supposed to.

No, after the V20 LG has now added signature checks so you can't flash other variants to convert to another.
This was not widely known a few months ago. We thought that V20 trick would still work.
Too bad.
