[HELP]{Q} Preload Partition on AOKP Roms - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Should AOKP or CM roms have the preload partition. I am using rootbox and i have a preload partition on 500mb which is not being used. The folders are empty also i cannot delete them. I think it is wasting space or am i wrong. i seem to be running out of space now and then. Should the partition be there. If so why is it empty and not being used and occupying 500mb..If it is not needed how can i delete it.
Thanks

Also using rootbox, I have the preload folder but there's nothing in it. Did you come onto rootbox from the stock (or stock based) ROM? If you did, I'm assuming you didn't wipe the preload folder?
There may be a better way to do this, if anyone has one please shout out. Otherwise:
Flash a stock ROM (using mobile Odin pro you can root it on the fly).
Flash philz kernel. From philz recovery, wipe data, dalvik cache, cache, and format /preload and /system. Immediately after doing that, flash rootbox again.

what is the size of your preload folder/partition .. i use partition manager and it tell me its 500mb .. and its not getting used..if i uses philz kernel wont it create the preload partition again ??

Mine says 0bytes. Yes philz/stock will create the preload folder again, but will allow you to wipe it before the flash. I don't know how to wipe it from rootbox.

see post above .. thx

Mine looks the same in the same app, no need for me to post mine. I just interpreted it that it was saying that I wasn't using the space, as it's only 8 MB. I didn't see it as a problem

[Rom] How to update and not lose any data?

First of all sorry for my bad language
I've a Lg 2x (Aka Optimus Dual) temasek's UNOFFICIAL BUILD, now i saw an update from temasek. I'm asking how i can install the new room file as a simple update without losing any app/contact etc.
Well if it's possible what's the correct way to do an update of a custom Rom ?
Very thanks,
Sorry for the question but i've googled and nothing, also searched here but nothing
if its a update of the same build jus erase cache and dalvik cache and install the rom. then ur data remains untouched. but if the rom is different u need to full wipe. data will be lost. but u can sync contacts to gmail and retrieve back any time.

What does errase cache and dalvik cache do? Does the settings stay the same or do you have to set them again when you update? If it delets settings...can you update without errasing cache?
Nope...clearing cache and dalvik cache only wipes unimportant info...your settings will be there as long as you don't press factory reset...

exactly. but look for the requirements for the update. sometimes even updates may require data wipe if the dev states it.

All the above is good and true. I'd like to add that I always make a ROM backup with ROM Manager before I update my ROM. That way, if something should go wrong, I can get back to where I was before the update.

Dude you could just install Titanium Backup from the play store and back up all the apps and data you want to. And yeah, your device needs to be rooted. Cheers.

Cleared data partition, but can't USB to install new OS

So after some bootloops yesterday and freezing occurring when I tried to wipe Data partition, I flashed stock retail recovery, via the Unroot method. I was then able to wipe the data, cache and dalvik cache partitions, but the sdcard-ext is now empty as well.
I am left with no Android OS, and no way to move a ZIP onto the storage of the tablet. Can someone help me?
Are you able to get into download mode?

Yes, I am able to get to Download Mode, but the images that I have seen only overwrite the Recovery Partitions. I am trying to install a new OS using recovery. Are there images that I can install through ODIN that include a new OS?
Yeah, loads?

The links can sometimes get a bit funny, so you may have to browse the link tree again.
Also you've not started which version it is (not that it matters really) just make sure you choose the right selection for your Tab.

[Q] Should I be worried?

Story:
First a factory reset from the phone.
I have wiped all, battery stats, user files, caches and Dalvik cache, all you can wipe from Clockwork.
Then I formated everything that you can format in Clockwork.
After this I flashed original firmware (unbranded version though) from Odin.
I got rid of the problems I had except one.
Every time I reboot the phone warns that I lost connection for roaming, until I start internet.
Only I have roaming disabled in settings.
Also there was STILL files left in the phone, the folder and files accepted via bluetooth on internal sd card.
I don't know if there's anything else left but these files showed up in Gallery.
How can this be after I reset, wiped and formatted everything? Makes no sense to me.
I really have no idea what to do.
Cant find anything similar in threads to find sollutions from.
And it seems to be pointless to wipe and reformat yet another time.
Any tips at all to get me started would be really great!
You have to manually delete everything. Clockwork does not delete storage files.

I know, I meant the system reset, wipe and formats.
But even in CW there is options to format system amongst other tings, that should have done it I think?

Samsung support thinks the 3G chip is broken? I don't know about that?

[Q] Installing our selected ROMs data/cache

When we reboot into cwm recovery to install our selected roms, do i need to wipe the data and cache AFTER or BEFORE i install the roms / gapps that i want to? Need help here !
- One more, those who are experience like me when i installed (cm10 port by Psyke) noticed that music app does scan SD card, but then no songs are shown when the app launches, thus leaving it to be blank / left only symbols at on top of the screen . Is really music doesnt work yet for the beta release? thanks for any response

If it's the next version of the current Rom you have, then wiping /data and /cache partitions is not nessesary. If it is an entirely different Rom then you should do a wipe as the phone won't boot properly.
As for your second query, a temporary solution is to use a different media played. I had the same problem with the initial cm10 builds for the galaxy s3.

Wiping /data and /cache doesn't wipe your sdcard content. It only wipes your installed apps and its data.
Doing a wipe before and after doesn't matter. But generally we do it after flashing a ROM.

You can restore the backup with out data wiping since cwm recovery wipes /data and /cache before restoring a backup.

How To full wipe all scripts/mods

Fellow Users,
I wiped:
- Factory/Wipe data
- Dalvik
- Cache
- Every storage
did a fixed permission
- Switched different roms Stock and Custom
- Switched different kernels stock and custom
- Flashed with Odin and with CWM Recovery.
How can i get rid of the nasty scripts or mods that are stuck ??
Is there a way to clean everything harder and deeper than what i did ?
How about init file or something?? i dont have ADB
I think this is how. follow these.
1. Factory reset / Wipe data
2. Wipe Cache partition
3. Wipe Dalvik
4. Go to mount & storage
5. Fix Permissions
6. format /cache
7. format /system
8. format /data
9. format /preload
10. format /sdcard
Try these. But make sure you have a rom to flash on external sdcard. because formatting these will remove system and you will not start phone without flashing a rom.

To fully format the phone you could also use megawipe. It is a flashable zip for cwm which will remove anything, also your sd card. Hence better have a flashable rom on your external sd. You can find it in the dev section or search for mega wipe.

Thanks for help,
I try the method rl421403 says but it didnt help, i also flashed the mega wipe zip file and did the wipe but that also didn't work.
Maybe it is hardware related? is there a way to test this?

Maybe let us now what you want to delete exactly.
Usually the mega wipe well erase any file and leave a blank slate.
