Anyone else having this issue: my home key needs to be pressed a number of times or firmly before it reacts. I'm affraid the button is starting to go.

Mine started doing it a while back and it turned out to be my screen protector. I was using Stealth Guard protectors at the time.

Hmm, Im not using a screen protector.
Are those buttons along the bottom actually buttons, or are they just touch sensititve?
See if it tends to work better if you press it as soon as the button back lights go off.... I had to return my first vibrant because of this hardware issue.

Yes, it works better when the backlight goes off! Damn it, I don't want to have to return this phone. Its easy to get into download mode...
Could it have anything to do with the rom I'm running? (Obsidian v4) its supposed to support a kernel with backlight notification...

Press the home really hard just once and see if its better I did that now it's perfect

***USE AT YOUR OWN RISK***
Do not use with any other ROM besides neobuddy89's ICS Passion Version 10.6
This mod adds the onscreen software buttons for neobuddy89's ICS Passion ROM version 10.6 found here
This is based on evilisto's guide found here
What this Mod Does:
Adds onscreen buttons like you would normally find on phones and tablets which have no physical buttons.
This mod adds home, back and recent app buttons at the bottom of the screen (or on the right side in landscape mode)
Why would you want this?
1. because you can.
2. ever been in low light conditions, using your screen filter app to dim your screen nice and comfortably low when BAM your blinded because you hit the back button?
3. it looks neat.
Instructions:
1. backup everything in case you need to revert.
2. its a good idea to make a backup of your current framework-res.apk (found in system/framework)
3. disable your lockscreen (this is a current bug I hope to fix soon)
4. download the attached framework-res.apk
5. either use adb or a root file browser to replace the current framework-res.apk with the new one.
6. reboot (if you've done this through a file browser on the phone it will likely do this by itself)
6. enjoy
Current Known Issues:
1. The lockscreen becomes extra large and the locking mechanism is displayed slightly off screen. (you can still use it but it is very difficult to get the lock to catch)
2. the settings menu looks different, some of the text is not formatted correctly.
3. the keyboard overlaps slightly. (it is still usable but you might hit a soft button occasionally when going for the space bar)
4. this appears to take away the additional items on the reboot menu.
5. more of a downside than an actual bug and its likely implied but this takes up an extra little bit of your screen.
6. It made me re-sign in to google I cant say this will happen to everyone.
7. probably quite a few more bugs I haven't found yet.
Please feel free to let me know of any additional bugs you find.
Special thanks to Neobuddy for an awesome ROM
and of course to evilisto for the Idea.

Would use if it didn't create any of these problems but will be watching for progress

I am 100% sure if you changed the screen resolution to something else ALL of those issues would be solved.

Changing the screen density would work but it also causes some app compatibility issues.
Mostly small issues like the apps not filling the screen.
But I am hoping to find a workaround that does not require this.
Of course if your already changing screen density then this shouldn't be a problem for you anyways
I'll play around with it and update the op with the correct density for those who want to go that route for now.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Change density + market enabler = problem solved??
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
The market actually works it just makes you sign back in once after installing the mod.
And I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't just a fluke.
I've been playing with LCD density changer from the market and it doesn't seem to be changing the home screen for me randomly.
It does make the keyboard a bit smaller but pushes it to the left.
I'm still playing with it though.
Hopefully I'll find a good setting
Does anyone use a density changer on ics?
If so which app do you use?

Rom toolbox.
I'd like to see this progress into a ics settings mod for Passion, it'd be nice to have the option to toggle this on/off.

Yeah I don't want to just flash this and be like ehhhh and then revert it... I want to be able to have a switch to turn it on and off, that'd be great, but its a bit hard to implement i would guess.
I'm still working on it but progress is slow during the week because of work. And my sister is getting married this weekend.
I expect to work on it a lot more next weekend. Although with any luck I'll get something working sooner.
Basically I've found that enabling the soft buttons seems to enable all tablet oriented options even when they are specifically set to off.
I'm currently trying to find a workaround for that.
I did find a couple other fun but mildly pointless options as well like allowing the lock screen to rotate.
Or disabling the screen turning on when plugging or unplugging the phone.
But I'll play with those a bit after I get the soft buttons fully working.

Bro, no hurries!
We all have our own things to do, and work and family comes before anything else.

I think I found it.
When I recompile the apk its adding some stuff that I didn't tell it too.
Once I can figure out why, I think this will solve a good 90% of the bugs.
More to come soon..

Ive left the atrix for a while recently had the atrix2 and both phone had the issue with losing vibration while typing or even the touch buttons was wondering if there is a fix or not
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I've actually only had this issue while I was running a ROM with Motoblur and using Swiftkey x keyboard on pretty much a daily basis. With a blurrless ROM I haven't had this happen yet.
Are you using either by chance?
Im using blur and stock keyboard
....swiftkeyX seems small with this high res display is there a way to increase the keys?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
You can change the key height to make them a bit bigger under advanced. Not sure for other keyboards.
I run mine all night charging as my main alarm.
If your rooted then check out a dimmer app for root you can turn them off completely with root dimmer.

Try “dock clock". Put it on my wife's rezound for her to use as clock/alarm. Soft keys are off while in use. You can set it to activate automatically when plugged in after a specific time (I set for 8:00pm). That way the app automatically opens when you plug it in at night but NOT during the day. Works excellent with or without dock.

nice app, thanks
The app 'screen filter' can turn off the keyboard backlight with the caveat that you need to turn the screen off then back on after starting it.
I am going to try out dock clock. I like gentle alarm as my alarm, but no reason it needs to also be the foreground clock.

Been goofing around with some stuff today, and realize that the home screen soft keys and a soft keys are used for pretty much everything else are different. The phone uses the system UI to generate the soft keys on the home screen and app drawer. Then it uses the theme soft keys to generate what it looks like for everything else. This is interesting because you could have a completely different looking home screen setup then what actually is used when navigating through the phone. Going to toy with this more

Wow. Nice find.
A nice mod in the making I guess
Yea like no need for a home button when at the launched. I'd rather have recently. Cool though.

Are you assuming this because they look different when on the home screen and app drawer? Because if you go to settings-display-front touch buttons- and disabled transparent background you'll notice that's why they are different

I've used to sets if images. One for the systemui and one for a theme. They changed. The ui has to have an xml to direct it. More digging is needed but in theory on your home screen you could have like back recents and menu and in everything else it could be normal.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
True. I did notice that when you reboot the g2 and turn it on the soft key background uses the background image from the systemui for a quick second as well
