Hi. Could someone tell me if it's normal for my s3 to not charge while playing games or movies etc when it's plugged in? Thanks.

Get a battery app such as better battery stats. I bet it is charging, but since playing a game or a movie will drain your battery...
Do like I did a while back, spent 22 bucks on a QCell 4200mah extended battery.

Depends. Its certainly not abnormal. Depends how much power is being used. Games more so.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
If i get this right the games or movies are draining the battery faster than it can charge. And considering how long it takes to charge thats sounds right. I looked at a few of the extended battery packs. Saw one on ebay 20,000 mah for $25. Quick question wont they be the same as a charger being plugged in and still charge at the same slow rate or are they actually an extension to the battery? Sry for the noob questions first phone ive owned that the battery didnt last a few days.

I'm not even sure what normal is anymore.
Use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free
To check your maximum when charging. It should be 1000 (or 999) when on AC, 475 on USB 2 and 900 on USB 3.
This might not work with your model S3, I don't know it, you're in the wrong forum
Nope your right it doesnt work. Thanks for your help. Gonna go look for the right forum

Ok its me aging hopefully this hasn't been posted either cuz I haven't came across it....but anyway today I decided to calibrate my battery let it die out and charge while the phone is off...and this was around 5pm....I fell asleep and it is now midnight and its still charging and I know stock batteries don't need a lot of time to charge unlike extended batteries.....has anyone else come across this or does this phone need 7hrs plus of charging??

There is no need to calibrate the battery. When the phone reaches 99% charge capacity, it will take a while for it to achieve 100%. Once it achieves 100%, it will let the battery drop back down to 95% then it will begin charging back to 100%. It is a repeated process. It will keep doing this until the phone is removed from the charger.

Once you disconnect, your battery drops from 90 to 70 in a matter of minutes?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
If that is the case, I would say bad battery. BUT I do remember reading that there were some Evo 3D's that suffered from the same problem, and they were also getting extremely hot. If that is the case, I suggest exchanging.
Was your phone normal before?

It was normal as no issues that I've noticed but this was the first time I charged the phone being off also and I doubt an app wouldn't cause this specially when the phone is off so therefore nothing running

Let the phone die down to 15%, then charge it. If it drops significantly again, then we may have a problem. It could be a bad battery or an app you must have downloaded.

A smart phone is like a pocket sized computer. There can be malicious apps that can harm the phone. But if that isn't the case, I suggest hard resetting. If that still doesn't work, replace.
Edit: Try my other solutions first.

I personally had strange battery problems the first week I had the phone, and after that my battery life became quite good (I did the battery calibration technique from the og evo and it helped a lot also).
So if you're saying it's strange after a couple days I'd say give it a chance to go through a couple more charge cycles. I'd bet the issues will sort themselves out.

Keeping the screen on will dran the battery since that's what screens do.
Regardless of the device (including laptops), screens always take >50% of the battery.
Could you show the screen-on time?

Let me venture a guess. When you get a new phone, you tend to play with it a lot, hence the screen on time and battery drain Give it a few days, it will be fine -- this phone has great battery life.

The battery needs to go through a few full cycles of drain and charge before it's reached optimal performance. First week battery drained more but now it's performing brilliantly.
Just keep letting it drain completely and charging fully a few times and have auto brightness selected.

I've heard that li-ion batteries don't suffer from memory issues and there's therefore no reason to calibrate them or run them in any specific charge/discharge cycle.
If you ask 100 different people about how best to use your battery you'll get 100 different answers. Don't worry about it, just enjoy the phone.
Hmm. This phone probably has the best battery life of any android phone I've owned, and I've had a few.

You haven't said how long the screen was on for.

Tripe.
Minimum of 3 cycles to reach peak performance. I have flashed hundreds of roms/kernals, it ALWAYS takes a few days for the battery to normalise.
Op, take a chill pill, calm down, post again in a few days. If you're still having drain, it will be down to an app or your settings.

Are you using an original charger?
Are you using a wall or USB charge?
I have original 1650 mAh battery and it takes roughly about 2.5 - 3 hrs to charge from 0% to 100% using original Samsung charger
It will more if you bigger battery or you are charging USB or with nonstandard charger

is there any problem with my battery or mobile?

Bro battery charging time depends whether you are using the phone or not... because if you are using it continuously while charging screen n processor drains alot of juice...so it will take alot of time but if phone is in deep sleep it will charge faster...as simple as that..!!

But the charging is still limited to 650mA, since the hardware only has three modes.. 90mA which is never used, 450mA which is for usb charging and 650mA which is for charging with an adapter.

Maybe wrong charger, faulty battery and too many apps/widgets in the background?. Better have the device checked if the issue persists.

I think its alright! Yup its little slow but its fine! When I was having a stock S3, it used to take 2 + hrs for complete charging (0%-100%)
If you are not satisfied then you can change your charger!
Or if you are are rooted user then u can try by changing charging settings in your kernel(only if u have a custom kernel)!
Press thanks if it helped you! :silly:
Yea, no need to panic. Same here.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
You could use a custom kernel modifing the charge settings but BE CAREFUL, could be dangerous for your battery if you will exaggerate
The older your battery is then the smaller it's capacity and the quicker it will charge. A brand new battery should take around 4 hours to charge, so your battery has lost 40% of it's original capacity -assuming your charger and internal charging circuit of the phone remain to spec.
