Firmware vs ROM - I'm confused about CleanROM's recommendation - AT&T HTC One (M7)

I'm not a newbie to messing with my phone, but I am confused about the recommendation for the latest CleanROM release. It says:
Recommend latest AT&T 1.26.502.15 Firmware for best results but other firmwares can be used.
Click to collapse
The only thread I can find with that version (not just radios) is from Scott also, and it's just a rooted ROM. Which would be overwritten if I loaded CleanROM. So I searched for the difference between "ROM" and "Firmware" and in multiple places in this form it's said that ROMs are built on Firmware, and define the "Firmware" as Jelly Bean 4.2.2, etc. So CleanROM would be build on that Firmware ... and by flashing it I then have it. But that definition doesn't seem to fit with Scott's recommendation.
I'm completely confused.
Is this referring to a radio firmware?
What is the recommendation here, and how do I accomplish it??

I was wondering the same thing. I'm assuming it's best if you have software version .15, but you can also flash if you have .10 (like myself). I dl'ed the rom yesterday and am going to flash it today. By these instructions, flash .15, then flash CleanRom for best results?

ROMs are like the operating system and software applications.
Firmware is like the computer bios or drivers.
When devs say ROM is based on firmware x.xx, it means the software is built on the expectation that the firmware the phone is running will match. This is usually for best performance.
Like in Windows or any other operating system, you can run outdated drivers/firmware, but you won't be fully optimized or have the latest fixes.
For example, the latest firmwares contain an updated touch panel driver that makes touch response and accuracy better.
When I was on stock ROM and stock firmware, touch panel response was hit or miss, especially the home button. Newer firmware fixed that problem.
Flashing firmware requires either exact CID/MID match if s-on, or super CID if s-off.
Also, newer firmwares have updated hboot that blocks the s-off exploit from working.
Firmwares typically include newer radios, newer hboot, newer touch panel drivers, and system partition updates. Not all firmwares will have new updates for each item each time.

Here is the 1.26.502.15 AT&T firmware >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44260480&postcount=95

Flashing this should change the build number to 1.26.502.15? I just flashed and the build number is still 2.24 but the radio did change.

Where are you checking the build number at? From the bootloader?
If your checking from about /software/more/build it's wrong that's the rom version

I was checking it from the about section (guess it would help if i looked in the right spot). (Now to make me feel like a NOOB) Where on the bootloader is it located, I see hboot and radio but nothing concerning the build number, Im sure its probably staring me in the face:cyclops:

Help, s-off HTC

Hey Everyone, i am trying to get s-off on my phone but am unable to, i have tried many posts here at xda but i am having no success and would like for someone to help me please.
Be real specific about what you've done so far and the outcomes. Not saying that I can help much but anyone will need this information if they help you. Again specific details.

Try the wire trick.
Depending on whether you're CDMA or GSM, it varies slightly.
Look it up.
Just note, you have to be running a stock ROM to do it.

Exactly. I've done the wire trick on two different EVO 3D's, both brand new as of a few weeks ago and one from first release, and it worked perfect. Obtained S-OFF and started flashing ICS ROM's flawlessly. Search 'EVO 3D hboot 1.5 S-OFF wire trick' on Google or XDA.

Well.. we can't be sure if he has a CDMA or GSM device and what HBoot he has.
So, just look it up on Google based on your device.

Alright, boot to recovery, wipe all data and cache and then Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318942
Once it's flashed, boot up into it and google for "HTC EVO 3D GSM WIRE TRICK" from your PC.
Do that and you'll be fine.
It's how I got S-OFF, took me 5 minutes.

Alright, someone with the same issue managed to boot up by installing KingCobra ICS V1.2.
Try flashing that. If you're using 4EXT recovery, you shouldn't have a problem.
Otherwise, you'll need to manually flash the boot.img, which I'll attach here, since it's an older one.
Here is a link to the KingCobraICS thread.
Here is the link to download V1.2 of the ROM.
Here are the instructions to Manually flash the boot.img
Note: This is for V1.2 of King Cobra, not higher.
Also, rename it "boot.img"

Alright, now you can either stay on that ROM or you can try flashing the stock GB ROM from before, again.
But before you do that, make a full nandroid backup in recovery of this ROM since you already know that it boots.

[Q] Trouble restoring to stock

Hello all. I recently traded in my iphone 5 for an HTC one, and have been messing around with rooting, flashing, s-off, etc. I recently flashed a rooted gpe RUU running 4.3 (RUU-HTC_One_GE-3.06.1700.10_Rooted). The problem is, now I cant restore to the stock RUU. My information is below. When I run the command fastboot flash zip RUU.zip, I get the following error.

Like I mentioned above, I searched for hours and couldn't find a tutorial.
I finally just pulled HBOOT 1.44 from an RUU and flashed it through fastboot. Note that my One was S-Off and I had the Google Edition HBOOT 3.xx.
Here's HBOOT 1.44 that I used on my AT&T HTC One: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q5qntvr924lewul/firmware.zip
I believe the correct command is: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip

Maybe your using the wrong Ruu. Do you have an ATT or international one? Or GE perhaps?
If your s-on you have to use an ruu that is specifically signed for your device not just any.

Wifi tethering problems
I was a long time on the v5 of the rom, now decided to update it to v20 and i love it so far. Did s-off and stuff, supercid and updated radio to correct version and flashed the rom. First audio didnt work so i flashed the zip of harman kardon sound v7 and all was good again. Sadly now i found out tethering goesnt work Like if there is not the right radio version wifi isnt working but the tetgering schould, doesn't it? Is tgere any way i can fix this? I tried a few root applications but they dont seem to work either...
Tethering may not be enabled in the actual rom, radio has nothing to do with it. sounds like mismatched firmware @wifi not working.

So I have installed several sense rooms and there is a problem I'm running in to didn't know if it was just me or if others have experienced this as well haven't read anything on it,when on sense6 launcher everything works great but12 hrs or a day after the home button on the launcher becomes very laggy I mean super slow like you can see the animations slow, wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and if they know a fix besides installing another launcher.

I've tried uninstalling all mods and not using any and the problem persists.on a side note if I use another launcher for awhile and go back to sense the lag goes away but after a couple of hrs it comes back.

Unsure on this one,ive experience no lag in rom I use..unsure whats going on with either your device or roms your using.Sorry couldnt be of more help on your issue. Does this happen on completely stock ruu software as well or just with custom roms?

I've read 3 reports like this (lag going back to home from app drawer) with the other 2 users I believe were on the stock Euro ROM. Not sure what the problem could be, as there are lots of users on this base and only a few reports of lag. But I haven't noticed it on your debloated DE ROM.
Will I be able to flash this rom running just Sense 6.0/4.4.2/S-Off/AT&T or are there any pre-reqs I need to do before attempting to flash?
I have AT&T with S-On. Should I revert back to ATT stock, update to the latest firmware and flash this Rom? I tried flashing the ROM without doing that and the wifi doesn't work. Thanks

Unfortunately v20 is 3.x base, and no such base yet exists officially from AT&T until they release Android 4.4.3 for our phone. So the only way to install compatible firmware is with s-off.
Similarly now that v27 is re-based to 4.16 software, you need corresponding 4.16 firmware, so the same goes (s-off required to update to the right firmware).

Thank you for your quick response. After getting home last night from work I did a quick search and found out the same thing you mentioned: AT&T won't push out firmware update.
I will just stick with Skydragon GPE v3.0.1 I have been using for a month now (it was a life saver btw, for some reason my stock Sense was lagging and slowing down like crazy)
skydragon +sense

Happen only 4g and 3g that's why my question thanks
The firmware fails to install for me with a "FAILED (remote: 24 parsing android-info fail)" error. I'm running the ATT 4.4.2 1.58.502.1 firmware, but with TWRP 2.8.1.0, rooted, unlocked, superCID, and S-OFF.
Here's my getvar info if that helps to troubleshoot:

I would try a newer version of TWRP, but none is available that works with ATT's stock HBOOT 3.1.6. Thanks in advance for any help!
EDIT 2012-01-27: After getting the OTA (installing it w/ stock recovery), I still was unable to flash this firmware. Instead I flashed the Euro firmware mentioned here, which did install for me. After that, I was able to install the ROM without any issues, and it seems like the radios are working correctly. Yay!
Since this was probably a very stupid thing to do, I'm going to attempt to install the US lollipop radio from this thread.
EDIT2: That worked, and everything appears to be peachy!
Upgraded apps un-upgrading
I'm still on v 31.0 WWE International version, might try to upgrade tonight to 33.0.
Every reboot certain apps (only 3 right now,) get downgraded to the version that came in the ROM. They are:
Dropbox: Downgrades to 2.4.7.14 (currently 2.4.7.18 in Google Play Store)
GMaps: 9.2.0 (currently 9.3.0)
Youtube: 6.0.13 (10.02.3)
Is this a known bug, or did I screw something up in the installation?
Thanks!
p.s. When I attempt to upgrade to v 33.0, can I do a dirty flash and keep my app data, or is it better to clean wipe?
Update: 33.0 ROM went in just fine on a dirty flash, and the problem appears to be solved. No idea if this will happen again as those apps get newer versions in the play store.

AND this is what happens when people don't read the forum!
YOU CANNOT S-off the X+
YOU NEED to find your RUU, don't ask me for it, I don't have one.

As far as the ruu is concerned, I already downloaded it:
RUU_ENRC2B_U_JB_45_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.17.707.1_Radio_3.1204.168.32_release_299722_signed.exe
(I stay in India-so Asia version of ruu)
What are you saying about s-off?!
Why cant I s-off HOX+ ?
Its only after reading the forum :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425 ,I came to know that to run the ruu I need to s-off first since i am going back to stock rom from my current cm11 nightly.
At first, I tried running the ruu with s-on but it gave me an error.
