For something billed as practically bullet-proof, the razr disappoints.
Thanks to poor design and too much flex the internal screen on my razr is toast. I have intentionally waited a few weeks to post this because I wanted to be more objective over this. Let me start by saying I am the very average user case, I make a few phone calls, mostly text messages and when I am stuck somewhere a little bit of web browsing. I am an engineer and I understand pretty well things like internal stresses and loads. I am also very methodical and keep my phone in the same pocket every time, I baby it and ensure it never can fall. So this being said I was amazed when I pulled it from my pocket to see a scrambled then black screen.
So to explain, a few weeks ago I am in a bar with my girlfriend and my buddy. We are pretty much the only ones there, I pull out my phone from my front pocket send a message to some other people who are going to join us, put the phone back in my pocket, walk over to the bar get drinks and return. I pull my phone out of my pocket again and the internal screen is cracked. I don't wear emo pants, I didn't body slam myself to the ground, I didn't get struck by a vehicle, I simply walked 20 feet back and forth and my phone went from "everything is a go" to "congratulations on your $300 paperweight". In addition, the rest of the phone was fine, the backing, the gorilla glass on the front, everything, just the internal screen starting at the center on the left and radiating out a few inches was a few tiny cracks.
Again, I reiterate, I have babied this phone, I never dropped it in the 3 months I had it, kept it nice and safe. The reason was that before this I had an htc eris, I bought it used in decently rough shape, and it was a veritable tank, it had been dropped and it had taken a beating, and it barely slowed. Then I decided that I actually was going to try out having a nice smartphone with a nice blazing data plan so I could enjoy having the benfits of a real smartphone (the eris was on a plan with no data). So I didn't mind shelling out the $300 to get a piece of the glory. I was a little disappointed by the color quality on the screen, and the atrocious battery (I would actually watch it drain batter while plugged in if I was browsing and I never had it last a full day with nothing running and not using it). Though in spite of this I actually got used to the phone and kind of liked it, at least until this.
As expected verizon was useless to provide me any help, all they did was to accuse me of dropping it. I was informed that it was an excellent phone and the only way for this to happen was to be dropped quite a ways onto a hard surface. They also told me that they used them and their batteries lasted all day with talking, texting and web browsing without being plugged in (HAHA). Unforetunately for me I didn't opt for the insurane on the razr and I ended up buying a brand new phone (this time a rezound) and I got the extended battery and can't even fathom how I did it with the razr's battery.
Anyway, I just wanted to give a word of warning be very careful. If you notice there is a lot of flexibility that they have by making this a very wide phone but very thin. This may well be any of your undoing despite how good of care you take.

I think you have been unlucky. My phone is always in its otter box case screen in toward my leg when in my pocket.
The phone actually has a steel frame as well. No where had it ever been sold as bullet proof though.

And up until this happened there was nothing wrong, so saying I have had this 3 months and nothing bad has happened to me isn't proof it won't happen. Because until that moment we were in the same boat, and I hope that we won't be in the same boat now for your sake.
None the less, there is nothing I can do now anyway so I am done being bitter.

Mine is insured against accidental damage of any kind. Even getting it wet.
So even if I did end up in your boat it wouldn't matter

Sorry to here about your bad luck. Guess that's why I paid full retail for my Razr Maxx so I had insurance no matter what. I've been through alot of phones and never had any problems as you mention. Well atleast not the screen if anything it was basic stuff. Man I remember way back in the day I had one of those Motorola beige brick phones. I drop it , threw to against a wall and it never failed. Just goes to show how things have changed and build quality can always be in question.

still a big confused on how this can happen. the phone feels very solid.
It sort of feels solid. If you take it and hold the bottom in your left hand and the top in your right hand and turn both hands opposite directions you will notice it flexes quite a bit and without much force at all. Or at least mine does right now at the moment I can get several millimeters of flex which would be enough for the more fragile screen to give way. (Caveat probably not a good idea to try what I am saying as if it yeilds it won't be good).
A screen protector and or some meat on them bones would have prevented this...
No but seriously that sucks. It could just be a fluke phone. I keep my phone in my otterbox commuter case so I am sure that helps a bit.
Its been dropped (nothing serious, few inches) and banged. jJust "normal" wear and tear. I do use screen protectors too. I know the phone is thin but I have never had an issue with the flexing like you describe. So far this phone is turning out to be tough.
I wonder if you can describe the situation to VZW and get a new one unde a manufacturer defect. If not, just get a replacement thought insurance.

With full due respect....in terms of protecting from crack of a gorilla screen,what a screen protector does is not more than sticking broken glasses together after the tragedy

That's the thing, the gorilla glass is fully intact and still smooth as a baby's butt. It was the internal screen that cracked. Also vzw did nothing but accuse me of dropping it, they had no incentive to help me.

Oh I know, short of an extra layer of glass or some sort of hard clear resin screen its not gonna help one bit.
The Maxx is much better, but I know you bought this before it came out. Did you go into the retail store and they told you you dropped it? Or was it customer service over the phone? If you have proof that these is not a scratch on the phone, how can you be told it was dropped? I would push the matter further, all the way up to corporate if I had to. But the real problem lies with not having that protection plan. That is the real bummer.

In store and they all but called me a liar outright. It was frustrating, the only funny part was that I had two alarms set for the morning but the touch screen didn't work, though it would intermittently think you pressed the buttons for snooze, so the alarms were going off psuedo randomly for minutes at a time. The whole time the alarms were going off creating annoyance for them and customers.
The bad part was I was 3 hours from home on an anniversary with the GF and travel a bunch so I had to have a phone right then. I had no option but buy a new one. Lesson learned I have insurance and I have a feeling I will lose it more often now.
Go to a different store. I drive 20 miles because I hate the local. I went to the different store and they yeah thats why I left there or is so and so still there. Local store sucked but the other is great and always helps. Sad I have to drive but usually try and do something else I need to get done while out there. Customer service has been hit or miss. Usually you dont get follow through. Verizon tried to get a hold of me for 3 days and left a message telling me that created a trouble ticket to make sure I was happy. Never had them call like that before.
You might have had a defected phone. The RAZR is very solid I've dropped It a few times and punched it more than once. I dont use a case either. Screen is fine no scratches on it either though there's scratches and chips on the phone. I'm pretty hard on my phone but that's why i pay for insurance that covers everything that I got from best buy. I hate Verizon's insurance.

Same here, i am a carpenter and mine is abused and buried in saw dust all day. Dropped many times, and rides in my bibs front pocket where it gets pushed on and crushed by body weight. Hrmmm, watch it will break tomorrow, shoot..

Yup me too. Full coverage of accidental damage. This day in age I can't imagine not paying the extra $8 a month for this for ANY phone. They are too expensive and when we have them with us 100% of the time in our daily lives there is too much opportunity for damage. Regardless of what phone model.
The problem is the backing. It's very flexible.. you really can fix this by getting a hard case.
I have full coverage so I don't mind if it breaks. My SD card has everything important and I backed it up a few days ago so I'm all set
You should try going to Motorola instead, post this in their forums to see what they can do.
I was wondering if any of you do not use sleeves or cases or skins to protect your Touchpad. If so, can you report on the cosmetic condition or damages? Any excessive scratches on the back, or damage to any of the access slots, speaker, head phone jack, etc.
No protection on mine. My touchpad is kinda my throw around tablet as I'm not as careful with it as I am with my other devices. Had it for about a year no scratches on the screen at all, looks brand new. The back is a different story there are many hairline scratches all over the back and a one inch crack at the micro usb

my only damage is that the plastic right around one of the speakers is broken. at first glance it looks completely fine, but if i move it, it dangles. ill probably fix it eventually with some glue

Had mine since Christmas 2011. I tend to use mine only on the weekends at home. I have the custom case and a touchstone charger. I am extra careful with it and so far I have no speaker cracks or scratches anywhere. Right now I am listening to some old school rock with my Touchpad WebOs only on the Touchstone next to my desktop. Gotta say I really wish that HP would have continued supporting and making these as WebOs and the Touchpad are awesome. If you were to imagine a world without Apple or Android these would be considered awesome. I love mine and even with my Android phone I enjoy each time I power it up.
I've had two and one developed cracks in speakers and headphone jacks on its own.
HP though offered to service it and I just got it back with what seems like a replaced back casing.
I'm probably going to get a case now just incase

Definitely doesn't help that the touch pad is one of the heaviest 10 inch tablets either.

I really don't like most cases because of the extra bulk they create and even though they are protecting your investment, they hide the aesthetics of the product. I usually go with a decal skin on the back and then throw them into a sleeve when I am on the go.
With the touchpad, until recently, I often used the official case and I like it, but missed the purity of interacting with the tablet directly. Without the case the Touchpad feels pretty balanced and even more fun to use. The only thing I have noticed is that the head phone jack opening feels a little rough and of course I am more conscious of the speakers and take more care not to grab it from the bottom edge.
As for a stand, I love the http://twelvesouth.com/products/compass/. A little pricey but compact and low profile with rubber bumpers in all the right places.

I have used this model from Acase since I bought my TP. It provides some degree of protection from drops/etc., and is functional for reading/using at a desk, in a chair or in bed --- lots of viewing options. Pretty slim case, given other options out there. Holds up good (I've had it for over 8 months). Overall, I'd buy it again.

So, it seems from the replies here that the back is, not surprisingly, more vulnerable to scratches, much like the iPhone 3G was. But it is great to know that some of you, like me have thrown away the case (or never used one) and the world didn't end. Just a few scuffs . . .
I read somewhere that Steve Jobs thought that all the covers and cases for the original iPad disguised the original intention and design of the iPad too much. Whether you like Steve Jobs or not, he kind of had a point. So much thought goes into the design of these incredible pieces of technology and yet we tend to hide them with a big case.

Tell me about it, I don't tend to like light devices as I feel there clumsy but, this is on the other end of the spectrum though, its just that bit heavier than simply 'sturdy'
With regards to scratches the same appiles to my Nexus S, it'll get scratched for sure, how much it gets scratched is up to you ha ha

Mine had a couple of serious drops onto a hard floor just after I got it, but no ill effects. Now has the HP "world's-ugliest-case-ever" on it.
I got a cheapo silicone case and mine has held up well, even with two young kids. Matte screen protector is crap though.

I've had two touchpads to date, the first I received with no working sound; took it to a shop the next day and they agreed to replace, thankfully they had some remaining stock. The first did have a small crack from the speaker (If I recall correctly it was the left, if that makes any difference) to the front, it was their upon opening.
The replacement I received had no visible defect, but has since developed a crack on the speaker (very similar placement, but on the other side) along with a crack from the headphone jack to the front. I am incredibly careful with my devices, and this is the first of anything I've ever cracked let alone scratched. It's been in the official case since day one. I do wonder whether the touchstone could be to blame? I have noticed on occasion, in both WebOS and CM9, that it can heat up to an intolerable-to-hold level, to the extent that the device beings to smell (suspect that's the plastic casing?). As it's within the official case, this took me by surprise-- possibly the expanding and contracting of parts has caused the cracks? I wonder if that's a common trend amongst those with cracks and those without?
I'm still happy with the device, the cracks don't bother me as much as they should (primarily because I managed to get one in the firesale) and this is coming from someone whom is particularly anal regarding damages to devices.

After my most recent warranty replacement started to have cracking speakers in the official case, I super glued the affected areas and threw a skinomi 'carbon fiber' vinyl skin on t and for the last 2 months, I've enjoyed my TP more than ever. I use a $3 Verizon tablet sleeve and wish I had done this from the start rather than using the official case or a tpu case I was using. Also, screen protectors definitely aren't necessary. I have yet to drop the TP without the case on but this skin provides excellent grip and scratch protection as well as keeping the back clean-looking.

getting custom case
I got my hands on the tp late .. been using one since last 2 months .. i enjoy both the webos and android on it ... started using it without any case/cover and the back got scratched pretty quickly (in about 2-3 weeks) ...as for the screen it is a finger print magnet like ipad2 but i just wipe it with cloth when necessary ... did not get any cracks on it as yet but a lot of scratches on back ...i finally ordered the official hp custom fit case and i find it good value for money ...
Same story, glass looks great, back looks like someone took a belt-sander to it. Alright, maybe just an orbital sander.

About the price; according to some info found by sites such as Droid Life the price is looking to be around $149 ($199 with a $50 rebate) instead of the $299 like some people were suspecting which I feel is a lot better. As much as I like this phone and am likely to get it (full retail most likely at $549) I think $299 would scare a lot of people away from what seems to be a mid to low-high range phone.

Great to see this phone's benchmarks come in that close to the One X. Phone is looking good. I love the fact that he did a size comparison to the GNex--putting the phones side by side just proves that there is no way in hell I could comfortably hold that thing...

I've got the One X myself. I came from a Nexus One initially. When I held the DInc that he had, it honestly felt like holding a TicTac. Its very comfortable holding the One X and a GNex - you'll actually be surprised.
And in the unboxing video, it booted so fast because Fast boot was enabled. Its considerably slower with it disabled.

I'm gonna say that has a lot to do with the size hands you got and what kind of case you sport, and finally what's your mode of transporting it.
If I was female, probably would think harder about getting the gs3, since I could just throw it in my purse. However, I tote a sack, so I don't have a purse to throw my phone in.
I've got probably normal to slightly smaller hands, another negative for a larger phone.
Lastly, I honestly don't know how you guys transport a phone that's bigger than a Dinc, unless you do NOT pack your phone in a case. When I first bought mine a couple years ago, I bought an otterbox, to protect the investment these phones cost. But it sucks ass trying to transport it. Phones are not what they use to be, and you clip something that is this big to your waist, I'm sorry, I think it looks stupid. Put it in your back pocket, ugh no.
So I ended up getting a case with a clip, and throw it in the front pocket and clip it to pocket seam. But this still is an effort, sitting down, you gotta take it out, seat belt hits it, and on and on.
Of course I also sport a chl, and you can't pull off that much hardware on one side of your waist, let alone almost a full inch bigger. Maybe some of the bigger dudes can pull it off, but not me. Wished I could, because a bigger screen is always nice but, damn it has such huge drawbacks that make it non worthwhile.

I pre-ordered the S3 to keep my unlimited, but was worried about carrying such a large phone. I figured if I didn't like it I would switch to the DINC 4G.
I wear Carhartt shorts and pants because they have a pocket on the leg that's perfect for cell phones. Not to mention they make awesome gear - wears like a champ.
I stopped in T-Mobile to see if the S3 fit in my leg pocket and it fits with ease - even with a slim case. So the DINC 4G would be no problem.
I hate carrying a phone in my front or back pockets, and the belt clip thing is a pain when sitting down - you're right. There are other brands of shorts/pants with the leg pocket also. It has made carrying around a smart phone no problem at all.

I don't use a case and I don't keep anything other than my phone in my pocket, so the SGSIII fits fine in there... I stopped into T-Mobile to try it out and it slid right in and out with ease. It wasn't particularly difficult to hold the SGSIII either. The buttons are in good positions and it doesn't require any crazy hand-contortions to get at them (although the power button is a little cheap-feeling). I don't suspect I'll have any issues holding or using the SGSIII.
But there's a difference between something being "not particularly difficult to hold" and being a joy to hold.
Pretty much every hands-on with the Incredible 4G has said that the dimensions, paired with the somewhat-thicker, rounded back, make it fit very nicely in hand. Not to mention, the soft, textured plastic helps too, for those of us who don't use a case.
Even though I can hold it OK, I feel like the size and shape of the SGSIII, compared to the Inc 4G, makes it much much much more susceptible to drops, which is another important thing to note... especially for people like me who don't use cases.

I actually enjoyed holding the S3. However the Incredible 2 when I held it, just feels perfect in your hands. I find the power button is a bit bother some to press on the top for anything larger than an iPhone so I'm actually glad Samsung put the S3's at the side because its more convienent. The button, however, is cheap feeling. I suspect the Incredible 4g will also feel great in hand, but the power button might be a little bothersome since its very tall.

I've only got a Speck case on my HOX. It does not add too much to it. This phone needs a case IMO because it just slides out of my hands due to the surface. I usually just keep the phone in my pocket when I'm walking around.

I think the screen size issue comes largely down to preference. I wouldn't anticipate that the SGS3 would have any trouble fitting in a pocket, since that has a lot more to do with depth than screen size (ah, the old days of putting a Motorola Droid in your front pocket and having everyone ask you "what the hell is that giant box in your pocket?"). But it's about your habits in using your phone. If you primarily hold your phone with one hand and use the touchscreen with your index finger on the other hand, you could easily use a 4.8" screen or even bigger without any comfort issues. But, 90% of the time, I'm holding my phone one-handed and accessing the entire screen with my thumb. Unless you have really, really long fingers, that's nearly impossible on any screen bigger than 4.3" without seriously stretching your hand.
To be entirely honest, if it weren't for my desire for a little extra screen real estate and the fact that 4" is pretty much the minimum in this generation of phones, I'd stick with a 3.7" screen. The Incredible is as good as it gets in comfort-in-hand. Everything feels like it's the perfect distance apart.
I've been using my Note since I got it in March of this year. I didn't purchase a case as I had my iPhone 3GS for close to 3 years and never had an issue dropping it or damaging it.
A few weeks ago I took a picture and it didn't look real good. I opened other pictures I had taken previously and they looked much sharper. I looked into settings and everything looked normal. I looked at the camera window and noticed it was scratched and dirty looking. I tried cleaning it but that didn't do anything.
I contacted Samsung and was told this is physical damage and I need to pay to get this fixed.
I'm not one to try and get everything fixed for free but in this case I think it's a poor design of the camera window as it isn't caved in and sticks out and can get scratched by having the phone rest on it's back. I think this is the normal way to place the phone when I'm not using it.
I would like to know if you guys think this is a poor design or if I'm the one who messed it up ? I know I could of bought a case and this would of never happened but I think if a phone needs a case to keep this from happening then Samsung should supply the case or worn you that you need one. My iPhone 3GS with no case never had an issue with the camera window getting scratched.
If you think this should be covered under warranty how should I convince Samsung as they tell me it's not.

Just hard brick it and return it in for warranty. That's how most folks nowadays do it.

I can't speak for your phone, but I never use a case on any phone. My phones go through hell, very dusty and harsh environment (custom cabinet maker / installer). I have never had a problem with my camera lense cover. And I'm the guy who walks in the office and does the toss slide on the desk with my phone. But one thing I'm very good about is nothing ever goes in the pocket with my phone. Change, keys, lighter, none of that. But as hard as they try to make sure everything they produce is of the same quality, there are exceptions that slip through the cracks.
I love my note!

I always put in my pockets with nothing in my pockets. I will admit I do put it on the counter when I'm at a bar and may move it around on the counter but I still think a 600 dollar phone shouldn't have the camera window flush where it can get scratched.
I sent Samsung an email telling them I find this unacceptable and that this should of never happened and it's not because I'm careless. If they expect us to use a case then supply it with the phone or maybe tell us to never put the phone on it's back as the camera window may get scratched. Guess if they still expect me to pay to get the window changed I will have to learn how to hard brick the phone.
I love my Note and changed because I liked the bigger screen and having a better camera than my iPhone 3GS. I've dealt with Samsung for an issue with my TV and it was pretty hard to get things resolved. Now I have an issue with one of there phones and it seems to be an issue again. My 3GS had an issue with the sensor called Apple got an appointment at an Apple store got there 15 minutes later I was out with a new phone. The new phone had the power supply burn up. Same scenario call got to the Apple store 15 minutes later out with a new phone. That being said I prefer Android over iOS but for customer service Samsung is way behind Apple.

I hate to say this but "IF it had a case, this probabaly would've never happend". The HTC one X camera bulges out and so far there isn't a lot of complaints about the camera lense getting scraped. Claiming that it was poorly designed is just a bad excuse.

I never touch my lens with anything but a micro-cloth (plus it's in a fairly thick case, so sliding it around isn't an issue), and even then I got a scratch on it straight through the middle the first week I had the phone. But it's not noticeable in pictures. You'd REALLY have to screw up the lens to be able to see anything in a picture, the focal point is so far away from the lens...
EDIT: You may be able to just find a replacement lens and fix it yourself. I did that on a prior phone when the lens cracked from being dropped.
The camera is just that lens with a ribbon cable that connects it to the mainboard. Its not too hard to remove. I have seen replacements for other phones available.
Thanks for the replies. All I know my pictures look grainy now and when I look at the lens/window it's dull looking and I can't get it back clear. If I messed this up I would like to know how I did this as I have done nothing different with my Note compared to my 3GS. Will look into trying to fix this myself as paying 75-100 to get this done by the Samsung service center is expensive. I could understand if I did something stupid to mess it up but as far as I know I didn't.

I don't really like cases but I went with the otterbox commuter and I love it. You might want to look into a case once you fix the camera.
My outside silver bezel was scratched from dropping and it also has the camera window. Not to hard to replace. Just need to undo screws and something to pry it off. Found part on eBay.

If you've been relegated to spending money to fix it or getting a warranty replacement, maybe try to polish it first, it has worked for me in the past with similar issues. I don't know if its a polycarbonate lense, but automotive stuff always helped me. Meguiars plastiX is the stuff I've used with reasonable success, at least with plastic parts. Maybe trying something like that will help clear it up, if the scratching isn't too deep anyway.
I am going to try this tonight.. as i also have a very very beat up camera window and mines been in a case from day 1. but its in my pocket with countless other things. i am going to try and hand polish it and if that fails low speed dremel with a polish wheel and some polish creme lololol worst that happens is i screw it up.. i've got a spare note anyways. I'll try and post some before an after pictures.
EDIT:
after looking at the protective shell its just plastic and not even attached to the camera. you can buy the replacement lens cover here for $5 and its 9 screws to change it out

That's what I did. Hardest part is popping off the piece. I used something called an orange stick (plastic wedge thing). Its very easy though, hope it works out for you.

If u take the phone apart so the back is off 9 screws and a case opener tool. you can bend those tabs straight and the piece falls right out. drop the new one in and bend the tabs down and done.
If you take some paper and roll it up and put it on either side of the camera when you're snapping the back cover on it will make it pop up enough to stick out a bit further than the camera cover but not so far as to stop it from locking all the clips on the cover. When you put it back down after that the camera cover doesn't touch the table.
i bought the 10000mAh battery with case earlier this year and it's been great. i can abuse that battery like no other and it just won't die.
however, the real reason for this post is about the case.
i recently had a potato moment and left my phone on the roof of my friends car that i was working on. went for a test drive, out of my neighborhood, down teh main streeet at about 35 mph and suddenly i hear a weird little noise and look up in the mirror to see my phone bounce down the back window, off the trunk, onto the street and then into the ditch.
immediately my heart stopped and i ducked into the first turn off i got to., got out and walked along the side of the road, hoping to find my phone, expecting the worst...
Found it face down in the grass and immediately picked it up and turned it over... glass was intact! the plastic frame of the case had one crack in it that i was able to put back in place inside the rubber case. the rubber had some road rash but was overall intact as well. only thing wrong was my Spen was missing as it must have been ejected by the impact.
no big deal as i ordered a new one.
Main point though, this case works!
So close. My UAG had a similar experience. Ran over by a lorry due and as good as new!

At this point in your tale my heart stopped and I got sick to my stomach at the thought of my newly rooted N3 bouncing down the street. This could so easily happen to me. Great to hear it worked out okay!
Would you try that again if you're so confident that the case works? Personal experience does not equal fact.

jeez dude, relax. it worked for me the one time i needed it. that's all i need. i have no idea if it iwll work again because there's no way to guarantee it will hit the pavement at the exact same angle.
it worked better than no case and i'im pretty confident in saying it works better than some of the other cases i've had in the past that I know wouldn't hold up to the same situation.
did you have a bad experience with yours or are you just trying to stir up soemthing out of nothing?
i read alot of amazon reveiws and forums about this battery .plenty people have dropped there's off scaffolding and at heights ect and survived glad yours is held up but its the battery life i bought this for and its doing really well 19 hours on screen time and 3 days untill charge im really happy .it does feel vey sturdy though it dont have to be delicate with it anymore its like a tonka toy?

I've managed exactly sane scenario as above and my phone also lived to waste more of my time everyday >]. Thou in my case, ZL casing survived intact. And few years before broken whatitsname holder sent my galaxy tab clothed in otterbox defender through car window on particularly emotional curve. Again, there were survivors.
Those cases work and I can't consider "naked"device complete without one now. And ZL add really big battery to the mix..
