Hey guys, I just wanted to put y'all up on something. I found this seller on Ebay that sells unlock codes for around $3.50 US. I bought a code yesterday and he sent it out to me early this morning. He is a UK seller. To enter in the unlock code, all you have to do is put in your SIM that is locked, go to the dialer, type in 2945#*769# instead of the other code that he gives you. Then you go on the first option and type in the code (on the first line) that he gives you.
I just wanted to put y'all up on this so y'all could take advantage of this! $3.50 to get your phone unlocked? Sold! I am one happy customer. I hope this is the right section to put it on. :/

I actually got mine from this ad. A bit cheaper (pennies to some), and response was within 24 hours. Clear instructions, etc.
Keep in mind, this includes a link to Paypal, and doesn't actually register as a purchase on eBay.
Regardless, my L9 is unlocked, so I'm plenty happy.

@queboy89 legit! Thanks for posting that! It's good to have your phone unlocked, just in case something ever happens and you need to for example, change carriers or move out of the country.
@omgbossis21 hmm. really? I thought manufacturers don't give codes out anymore? That's what I heard from HTC, so I might be wrong. I had to pay $10 for my Sensation code.

Quick update that I didn't mention: T-Mobile will indeed provide SIM unlock codes, provided the device was purchased from a T-Mobile authorized dealer with a valid receipt. I had gotten mine in the Amazon deal, so it wasn't eligible.

So they (tmobile ) changed the way of do things ?
they provided me with the unlock code of a samsung exibith 4g like a year ago, and they havent asked me for any receipt whatsoever
the only constraint was that you need to have a good standing account of at least 90 days active, so they check that with your phonw # in their database and then
they send the request to the "unlocking" department, you get the code via email
in around 24hrs and it worked like a charm for me, now i am planning to get the L9, the 3.5 screen is getting too small as i am getting older :silly:

Bah, sometimes, I need to be careful with my words. I meant authorized dealer as in the actual T-Mobile stores. Amazon is certainly an authorized dealer, but I was ineligible in getting the SIM unlock code from T-Mobile. You have to purchase directly from T-Mobile's brick and mortar stores or website.
I believe that in your case, it would be dependent on whether you get the phone on contract or not. Because the L9 is sold both as a prepaid phone and on contract, there are different rules regarding SIM unlocks. The rules you stated are for the phone if you re-sign your contract and get the phone at the subsidized price. If you choose to purchase the phone outright, whether through the prepaid plan package or for a postpaid plan, then T-Mobile should and will provide the code immediately. It's currently $240 for the phone outright from T-Mobile's website, free if you sign a 2 year agreement, and $179 from Amazon. It's possible the stores are selling the same Amazon prepaid package for a lower price than the outright price listed on the T-Mobile website.
They probably didn't ask you for your receipt because you got your phone as part of a contract renewal/signing, and on a federally subsidized discount. In that case, they prefer to know that you aren't jumping ship from your contract before fully paying for your phone.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused!

i get my exhibit 4g at bestbuy, and dont had any problems when i called tmobile
, i got mine running CM10.1 much better than stock ROM, but still the exhibith is a low end single core cell
, i want the L9 soon !!
I might be a good idea to specify "carrier unlock" in the subject line (not to be confused with "bootloader unlock").

Got my code within a few hours. Entered it using the instructions in the OP. (Did not follow the instructions in the sellers email.) It showed it as unlocked. Rebooted and still appears to be unlocked. I don't have a valid micro SIM to test it on another network but it seems to be unlocked. Will report back again after trying a friends micro SIM.
For a few dollars you can't go wrong on this. Thanks OP!

That is sort of what I was going to say, everyone should be able to get the code for free from their carrier. The problem is that some have rules of not giving up the code until after contract or other restrictions.

Is it safe to buy a xperia s or any upgrade of eBay when it's a upgraded phone that they don't want on contract? What's stopping them from getting the phone blocked after I leave feed back? Or 6 month down the line they can't pay there bill and the phone gets blocked and then it can only be used out of the UK. Is this the risk we have to take? I've got 2 options, but it of eBay for 300 or Amazon for 379 and be safe. Thanks

Hi myself wouldn't buy an upgrade or any contract phone from ebay period! To be safe this is a new phone and would have problems so incase of this it's better to get it from a retailer. Also the phone wouldn't be on a network.

I've bought and sold quite a few phones off eBay with no problems. You need to look at and check feedback etc. But to be honest if people are that worried in the first place they should buy from a retailer.

Yes I have bought a lot of phones of eBay but not smartphones that are contract and upgrades that can be blocked. Have you bought plenty of upgraded contract phones, it's alright saying look at there feed back but you only have a month to leave feedback so after that month it could be blocked and then you won't be able to leave them bad feed back or bring it up with ebay.

yes I've bought unwanted upgrades, smartphones etc. the thing is that all phones can be blocked whether upgrades or not. I can only comment on my experience with eBay, others might not be so lucky. When I say feedback what I meant was look at how much feedback what type of items they sell and even email some previous buyers just to confirm they got what they expected.
my XS was bought from ebay as an unwanted upgrade! (so as my X10)
I think it's quite safe, the warranty is still active as soon as the phone is a UK version. And I don't think they can block the phone (unless it's locked to a network). An unlocked phone = belongs to the owner ; locked phone = belongs to the network. (am i right?)

If the person signed the contract with Carphone Warehouse / Phone4u, then the phone must be factory unlocked (unless it's an exclusive model to one network). And you can still "upgrade" with carphone / phone4u.
Actually I am not sure if they can even lock a "locked / branded" phone... (there was a news a few weeks ago about people are investigating methods to remotely lock stolen phones... well, this must mean they can't do it at the moment.)
And my friend told me that he had a friend who was working in Orange, and he ALWAYS could
"steal" phones from the store. the method was:
1. Use someone's name and address to sign a contract (comes with the latest phone of course)
2. Use his own credit card to pay
3. Pay the first month bill
4. Then claim that he didn't purchase the contract, as the name and address isn't his
5. So the contract is cancelled
6. Done
7. The phone is still his.
I'm not sure if this method is still working LOL, not sure if everyone could do the same as the guy was a Orange staff. But DO NOT try!!
I have also bought multiple devices via Ebay and have always succeeded in unlocking the device and using it on my network.

I see what you mean Warehouse / Phone4u most should be factory unlocked, say o2/Orange shop locked... I know the network can be blocked due to my friend at work having a contract phone, htc wildfire and he stopped paying his bill and the IMEI number was blocked by his service provider, the phone then couldn't be used the UK but works fine in any other country. The phone still works you just cant make calls when its blocked. Thanks

To date I start having screen issues with Xperia S, I have always bought phone from eBay (locked or unlocked) then take care of business with no issues.
When I bought the Xperia S from eBay, Yellow tint hit the screen and since it was from eBay I can't get it repaired. That sucks because basically with the market value of the phone and when I bought it I have lost $180 whether to sell it or get it fixed that is the price I have lost.
Faulty brand new phone that can't get fixed is not something that you would like to deal with a week after your purchase.
Remember, Market is flooded with Yellow screen Xperia S and Sony doesn't give a darn about it. So watch what you are buying.
Any phone can be blocked by imei number in the uk, pretty much if one network blocks then it gets blocked from all other networks as well. It's supposed to be a deterrent against theft as handsets become bricked pretty quickly.
I upgraded via phones4u as well and got free unlocked phone and 10% line rental discount ...

Unauthorized subsidy unlocks performed without the consent of the carrier, return to being illegal under the DMCA today.
This does not mean that AT&T or T-Mobile won't or cannot provide unlocks, although it could mean that they might become less likely to do so during the period between the user purchasing the device at new line or upgrade pricing and the contract period expiring or an ETF being paid.

This is misinformation.
Any phone bought before today can be carrier unlocked, legally. And then there is the fact that the carriers are not really on a witch hunt to find anyone anyway. At least not yet.
Seems that story in the first post may be incorrect. You are correct kimtyson.
Unlocking phones without the express consent of the carrier who locked them became illegal thanks to edits to DMCA exemptions back in October, but it's only now that the 90-day grace period is running out. Locked phones purchased in the 90 days after the ruling are still game to be unlocked, but from here on out, for an unlocked phone to be legitimate, it'll have to have been bought that way or come with a permission slip from your carrier.

It should be illegal when/if you still have contract or the phone is on EIP. other that it should be fine because you own the phone and you can do what u you want with the phone
granted it maybe, but when I saw the article, I went on to ATT chat this morning and unlocked my wife's SIII. Did my replacement note about 3 weeks back. Both phones under original 24 month contract, mine 8 months since upgrade, wife's about 6 months since her upgrade, both subsidized by the way......

Actually pretty simple, service provides will no longer unlock your phone and the pay for folks will charge four times the amount, because that is what the service providers will charge them. Not hard at all.

Re: Carrier Unlocking Your Cellphone ILLEGAL As Of TODAY
My opinion... If I want to unlock my phone fully (and the option to do so exists) I'm going to do it. It's not like I can jump carriers & not pay the ETF before the contract is up.
Just another example of crap legislation from D.C. morons.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using one opposable thumb.
This contradicts legislation already in place called fair use, which means if you buy a phone outright (no contract or used), you are free to modify it any way you please.
That law came as a result of class action against at&t and the iphone.
If you buy a phone at a subsidized price through a contract/upgrade, you break the law for flashing non-carrier software. The carrier still owns the phone until you pay it off.
Throwing a bone into the equation. For example, look at all the used ATT Notes that are for sale at this moment. I would say most of those are still involved with a subsidized 2 year contract. So how would future purchases like this be handled? I wonder if IMEI codes will have to be released before they can become unlocked. That would be the only way to run checks on this.
All I can say about that is a web service chat session with at&t gets you the code.

This seems like it's aimed at people who are selling unlocked phones in higher numbers - it's not illegal to call up your carrier, request the unlock code, and unlock the phone, yesterday or today or whenever. It's only illegal if they say "no" and you go ahead and unlock it by some other means.
IMO, this is aimed for iPhone users - my phone took me 5 minutes to unlock, since I happened to have a SIM from another carrier. iPhones need to go through some big process to unlock, even officially. I asked for my wife's unlock code for her phone, and they gave this whole list of instructions, which included 24-48 hour wait for the code to be obtained, or something.
If I had to go through that with the Note, I might think about unlocking it by some other means as well, especially if I'm just trying to sell it.
My "galaxy s5" came in today. Worked for one minute and died. Appear cheap made. Says made in China. Called tmobile she told me imei is unknown. Watch out if buying on ebay. I'm returning Monday

You have to be really careful on eBay with mobile phones. So many of them are blacklisted, blocked or are about to be. You have to make sure they can prove it was paid off. S3s have been around long enough as well as some S4s so your chances of getting a blocked phone are not as great but there are very few S5s that are not under contract of some sort. There are a couple of sites where you can check the IMEI for free, but that only shows what the state is today, and does not protect you from them reporting it lost or stolen after you buy it and have it for a couple of months.

I'm not that afraid of blocked phones. I'm planning on unlocking and using on att anyways. I'm just buying the tmobile version for the bootloader. The one I bought is straight up fake. They had a tmobile imei flashed to it.

AT&T and T-Mobile share phone blacklist data so depending on why it was blacklisted you can get it unlocked but that doesn't mean it will work on AT&Ts network. In my experience in dealing with used phones, if it's blacklisted for account or payment reasons then it will normally work on AT&T's network. But if it's reported lost or stolen and blacklisted for that reason, it normally won't work on AT&T's network.
I have a G900T I'm using on AT&T with no issues, but I've repaired and resold many blacklisted phones and have run into the issues I described earlier many times so I hijacked your thread to try and give a cautionary tale to others to help them avoid these headaches. I know how to deal with it but most ordinary Joes don't. I've seen the fake S5s and S4s and that's an issue too, but whether it's fake or not, if it doesn't work that sucks.
Sorry you ran into this issue and for hijacking your thread.

Swappa just makes sellers say their devices are whatever before listing. They don't have any real means to do quality check either. No real difference

This is true. I have had a TMo S5 that got blacklisted after 2 days of me buying it. I had to just sell it off underpriced. Sigh.
From what I heard from multiple AT&T reps, and got done on the one I got (another TMo S5 from another person), was to take him to TMo store first to verify the account is on his name and that the phone has been paid for. And then go with him to AT&T store to register the IMEI on my name. Once AT&T registers the IMEI on a person's account in person with both parties present, black listing won't apply to that number any more.

But swappa does require the esn to be checked which weeds out stolen, being financed (which is still consider stolen since Tmo still owns it til paid off), cloned esn/imei which will catch you a felony if in possession of and fake devices.

My fake device checks fine on swappa. When I called tmobile she told me the imei is clear and the device is unknown
I'm coming from att note 3. What's you all opinion on note 3 locked bootloader vs galaxy s5 unlocked bootloader ?
Edit: disregard this one. I posted in the sticky to discuss other devices

That's not true. Swappa makes sellers refund you fully if the phone stops working due to an imei issue. On eBay, if I state the device turns on and appears to function as normal but could have a blocked imei. And eBay won't make me refund the buyer due to an accurate description.

I haven't sold on swappa. How do they make you refund ? They somehow can withdraw money from your PayPal after you get the money ?

Plus, I don't think the powers to be here at XDA would promote a service like Swappa without doing some do diligance. Plus I've bought and sold on Swappa, and have good results each time.

I see. I don't try to be a pain but just for the sake of discussion, from what I read it's still vague in how they are able to promise people refunds. Just curious if they will just pay for it or somehow make the seller refund obviously without access to their PayPal. Like on ebay, if you don't get what the listing is, eBay will cover you first and go for the seller themselves
Bought my first device on swappa. From what I read on swappas FAQ, if something goes south they just have you use PayPal dispute resolution ... not great, all the refund they can promise you is the 10 bucks fee which is of course nothing

That's strange cause I had bought a phone that was reported incomplete payment and they wanted me to dispute it with them before going to PayPal. I guess it all depends on the situation.

Yeah that's what's stated on their official FAQ. After hearing so many positive things about swappa, of course I made a purchase on a seller that doesn't have much past selling history, something I would never do on ebay. Now seller doesn't reply at all, even after the staff left two messages. I guess we'll see what happens. Yes swappa just tells you to dispute with them, them being the seller, if they just don't say anything, you can't do anything about it. I feel swappa is great for sellers because you get immediate payment but not great for buyers. Of course sellers get their money FIRST lol, why would they even care about you. A couple hundred dollars phone scam is so easy you just need a unverified PayPal account, which is just an email, when someone buys you get the money right away. You don't verify your PayPal to transfer funds instead you just use the unverified PayPal to pay for online purchases. And they refund they handle is the 10 bucks lol, PayPal does the rest( what's said in this post is what I understand of swappa and currently what's going on with me. By no means it is 100% correct, feel free to comment). I'll probably sell on swappa and buy on eBay from now on

I thought I could buy the v10 through Tmobile without a contract. Pay full price but the person on their chat told me it wasn't possible. So, Im looking for suggestions as to the best options to buy the phone w/o contract and with some type of warranty.

You can buy the phone from T-Mobile without a contract but you do need a plan.
Just talk to a different person imo.
If all else fails you can purchase it with a cheap pay as you go plan.
The cheapest I think is $3 for 30 min.
You however will have quite a few hurdles to jump through to get it unlocked from T mobile.
They require at least $100 to be spent on your account and 40 days of active service to unlock it.
You can get around those if you are lucky, some people have not been able to.
If you can do without warranty, your best option may be to use a service like swappa.com
You can buy new and used phones from people there.
Just make sure to check the condition of the phones before purchasing, also note if they are unlocked or not if you will be using a service other than T mobile.
If you must have a warranty of some kind, there are after purchase options available from places like squaretrade, however they are more expensive than I personally think they are worth.
Good luck finding your new phone.
You sure can buy it outright.

Thanks guys.
@L0x -- any luck??
I got mine from AT&T right after the release. I spent a bunch of time on various chats until I got someone who told me that I could get the phone unlocked within 3 to 5 days after purchase. Added to cart with the cheapest plan & ordered.
AT&T auto-activated the phone when it showed delivered. As I am using the phone in Europe on Vodafone, this was a problem. It took, all said and done, probably 8 hours across a month and a half on chat, twitter, and phone calls to get AT&T to send me the unlock code, cancel the plan, and wipe the account balance to zero. Unlock code was immediate, the rest took the longest. I didn't mind harassing them very much because I had my unlocked phone.
After it was all said and done, I have the AT&T variant with an unlock code, running on Vodafone, with nothing paid to AT&T except the cost of the phone. It takes time, persistence, and patience to make it happen.

Not yet per say. I'm about 2 weeks out from purchasing. Holiday kicked my ass. But I will update this thread when I purchase. I'm weighing right now actually going with a Tmobile plan. I use Metropcs right now. Just not liking the 20$ more a month for less data.
I'm in Canada. Bought mine from Best Buy in NYC. They give the option for a friend to pick up. Works great

$699.00
****Code is dead as of 5/19/16. Can be deleted. **** Well being a Verizon customer after seeing the below thread I decided to pull the trigger on a unlocked 10 well I found out the HTC1008 code no longer works so I started incrementing numbers and what do you know HTC1011 worked for $100 off of USA model! happy shopping. Canada and UK chime in if they work for you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/vzw-how-to-unlocked-model-vzw-t3376743
Thanks! verified working too!
Does not work for HTC Germany.
i never found a code that works for HTC Portugal, kind of frustrating seeing a more expensive device and when you check other Euro country's with the same device cheaper and some with coupon... :|
At this point I'm waiting for it to be available at amazon ES/FR/DE
Bought mine on the 9th using that code
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk
Also in the DACH area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) it's impossible to find a decent coupon to save yourself a little money. Only promo I found are 7% off at the mail-order company Ottoversand, valid only in Austria though.
HTC 10 for 650€
Anyone else found something interesting?
Great, now all they need to do is offer some different color options like the A9 did right out of the shoot.
HTCCA1011 works for Canada. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks, still working in USA as of 5/14/16
Just ordered mine and used the code!
Voucher Code HTC10 got me an HTC10 @ £512.99 today Hope that's useful to someone else... On the UK site
HTC1011 not working anymore!
the code not working anymore. :/
there is another code??
I've tried incrementing the numbers like OP, and all up to HTC1020 say 'Invalid promo code'
HTC1014 and HTC1016 do not say or give an 'invalid promo code' error like all the others ?? hmmmm
Lol.. I tried too.
i got the same results...
Ugh, I just realized in my research that I have to buy the US model HTC 10 as that works with US carriers and giffgaff in the UK, but the EMEA model doesn't work with any US carriers as it's missing LTE bands 2, 4, 14.
But now the HTC1011 promo code doesn't work anymore. Anyone have any clue if they might bring another $100 anytime soon? Do they ever do sales for Memorial Day (May 30th)?
no longer available.

I have an option to get one for $199 with the signing of a two year contract on my account. I'd be happy if I found a coupon that worked there, even $50 off would be awesome as it would get rid of all of the bs upgrade fees.
I wonder if I could have vzw just ship my phone straight to @jcase.. That would be sweet.
