[Q] EFS Partition Modified - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sp, here I am. I updated to MG5 and my modem got modified. No other modem works and I know it why. The question is, Can I restore my efs if I use a backup of my friend's efs? Will that cause any damage to my phone?

From what I learned about efs from another topic pertaining to lg optimus g ( I'm sure its the same for all devices ). The efs stores your imei number and such. But other users may correct me if I'm wrong. So using your friends efs wouldn't help at all. I'm a noob to all of this still.

Edit: gotta love autocorrect.

efs does store our imei details. Pre MG4 modems had a different efs format. The format was kinda updated by samsung on MG4 and MG5 roms. I have no signals on any 4.2.2 roms either. However, an older backup may restore the previous format, no matter if the backup was made on someone else's device. Right?

I honestly couldn't tell you bub. I don't want to say go ahead and do it and then something else messes up.. I would wait for a reply from a much more knowledgeable person. Sorry that I couldn't help.

Your friends efs back up has your friends' imei , which if you use would be modifying your imei , which is kinda unnesessary. If you have your own efs back up just restore it.
sent from the state where Marijuana is NOT illegal !

Just go back to an EMGx modem.

you need an efs backup before installed mg4 or mg5 rom. for now no way to go back old efs format without a backup. and another efs file doesnt work with your phone. efs file contains encrypted imei and something phone information for detecting craking

I'm one of those "people".
so the answer is no. =)
you have to back up the un-corrupted EFS folder that have your IMEI in it.
there are many software and apps that claim to back up those file
you can just search "how to back up efs folder" there should be plenty of solutions and guild.

EFS Backup manual or automatic?

Hi every1
I see a lot of ppl on the QA complain about losing their imei number due to bad flashing and other circumstances.
I dont wanna risk screwing up my phone flashing roms so I was wondering what is the least hassle/best way to backup the efs folder?
Can u just use root explorer and copy the whole folder to extsdcard and then put the backup on the pc for future use
OR
What are the best apps for making backups and are they 100% guaranteed to make a working backup and restore with no problems?
Back up as many ways as you can, copy it to pc, use k-pack tool from the market, and copy those from your sd to pc as well, can't be too safe!
Just to update u guys pro efs will backup your efs folder to your pc no problem I recommend using this before flashing too much

Not 100% on the whole contents of the efs folder but its very important as it contains your imei number which is like a mac address its unique to your phone to identify it on a network always worth keeping a backup incase sonething happens to it

EFS is one of the partitions in the root directory which stores some of the most important data such as IMEI number, phone number etc, things which are unique to your device and will make your phone a paperweight (no network connection) if you mess with it..
Take a backup of this folder in case you face any problems..

Backing up someone elses folder will only give you their IMEI. by doing so you will void the imei as it cant be on 2 devices. Not to mention no one is gonna give you access to their IMEI number. My suggestion would be to start over from scratch.
Try GSII Repair by helroz. If that doesn't work you will need a professional restore. Mobiletechvideos can do it for a small fee.

and i also noticed that the service menu is blank

Have you tried flashing a stock rom?

Questions go in the QA section, not general
I know as you need one phone service box ( spt box, octabus box, z3x box etc ) for re build nv_data.

I'm speaking entirely from ignorance but did you flash the right variant? E.g did you flash 925F firmware on a 925F device? If I were to hazard a guess (and that's all this is, a guess) I'd say your radio firmware seems messed up (with baseband also being unknown).
What happens when you revert to your original firmware?

Did you flash the 5.1.1 version and then the 5.0.2? Flash the 5.1.1 again.
Ok so i flashed official firmware,i now have signal but my imei number isnt right it reads as follows 350000000000006 it ses i am not registered on network. Imei sv is 01

Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
Only way to flash it back would be if you made a backup of the EFS partition when you first rooted/installed recovery. The EFS partition contains all the IMEI data which is unique to your phone and flashed at the factory. Since you corrupted it, the only way to restore it would be to flash the EFS backup if you made it or send it back to Samsung for service. AFAIK there isn't a way to recover lost IMEI's if the EFS partition has been corrupted/wiped.
That's ducks really badly

Yeah. I suggest sending it back for repairs and when you receive the new one, root and do a backup of the EFS partition after root. There are several guides online on how to do a backup of EFS using adb/terminal emulator. Keep this backup in a safe location and don't lose it.
You can flash what you want now, nothing will help you. Your EFS partition is gone and without this specific backup you cannot restore the IMEI number. Send the phone to Samsung, they can generate the IMEI number and restore the entire phone.
new trwp recovery have a option to backup.. will post the thread here as little warning in the twrp thread..
Yep I always backup my efs/imei folder as soon as I root phone.
ernell said:
Hi.
I did the same stupid thing a while ago with the same result (without efs backup). Forget about reflashing. The phone is now a mediaplayer.
I asked our local Samsung repair shop, but they wanted to exchange the entire motherboard. Thats how they fix these things in Sweden.
BUT there is an easy way to fix it.
If you have been flashing 5.11, then I dont know, but if you havent, then you can contact an IMEI fix website, and they will help you
by remote service. It works perfectly well. You will get a new IMEI and new serial number. Send me a PM for a link. There is not so many
people doing this, and it took me a while to find the right guy, but guess if I was happy when it was fixed
It will cost you some dollars (60 in my case), and you cannot upgrade to 5.11 later (I dont know why), but thats better than brick.
Hope this helps.

Is that actually legal? I'd send it to Sammy and get it properly fixed, rather than putting up with some dubious services. What if you want to sell the phone later? Have fun explaining why updating to 5.1.1 won't work. I wouldn't ever buy a phone if I heard that someone changed the IMEI. Changing the IMEI is usually associated with a stolen device.
I had the same problem (but IMEI dissapeared), when I flashed 5.0.2 didn't work. But Then flashed 5.1.1 and it worked. Try this. You will loose root.
