Radio's and Sim card - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just a curious finding. When I first received my S4 the signal in my house was terrible. So bad that I was cursing the phone, as my Rezound was flawless....Great 4g signal. The S4 was constantly reverting back to 3g after being forced into LTE. So I cut down my Rezound sim card and used that in the S4.
Well, with the latest OTA (still on MDK) I applied Darkslides Rom to update to the new radios. Signal now sucks again. I've been reading how everyone loves the new radios, but I have hated them. Today I put the original Sim back in the phone and activated it, and my signal has improved in the house. I'll give it a few days, but I wonder if the new radio's were designed to work better with the NFC sims......as the Rezound Sim I was using does not have the NFC secure chip inside.

Interesting, I have had horrible problems with reception on my new S4 as well. It is strange because most are very happy yet a few are having problems similar to yours.
I had an S3 that had phenomenal reception in my home, my S4 is terrible, even though I live near the main hwy in the area and there are 4 towers within a mile or two. I barely get 4g at home and the phone frequently drops to 3g.
I have my old S3, wondering if I can pull the sim from it and try it. How did you get the old sim activated?
Thanks for posting. I am really hoping that Samsung and Verizon get this straightened out, otherwise I am going to have to find a new phone,.

Put the S3 Sim card in your S4. Log into your my verizon page on the computer. Go to activate phone. Select your line and then select a device previously activated. Pick your S4 (even though it already is activated. At that point it will bring you to a selection about sim cards. Pick that you already have a SIM. Then enter the Sim card number and it should activate for you.

Anybody notice 4G issues?

Hi I used to have the S3, obviously I have the Note2, I notice that the location of work in nyc area had constant 4G all day. Now it bounces 3G most of the time. So what I did it checked mobile networks from global to LTE..
Is that right or should I leave it to global. When on global it searches for a better signal all the time. Maybe my sim card is bad??
Are there any issues with the radio, baseband, software issues?
Maybe my phone has an issue with the antenna?
I actually in fact live in NYC as well (downtown manhattan to be specific) and in my area, when i start to drive out, I bounce to 3G then eventually to 4G. Its everytime I drive out. Not sure if its the path or something .Doesn't really bother me because I shouldn't be using this beast while driving but just noticed if that helps.
Great to hear from you, neighbor! Yes some odd reason the phone bounces in & out 3G then 4G. Its annoying....But I thought it was just me.

I live in Florida and I was noticing my phone jump from 4g to 3g and back yesterday while at home where I normally have solid 4g.
I found the opposite. Cincinnati Ohio tho but my 4G is rock solid on my note II and was ehhhhh on my GSIII

Glad to hear I'm not alone...I was ready to bring the phone back.
I guess the Samsung phones don't have a great antennas. My partner has a Motorola Bionic, his phone is 4G, all day. Other partner has a Rezound his is 3G but full signal strength.
We have the same signal bars strength wise. But his is 4G mine is 3G.

Outside of Philly and my phone was randomly going into 3G the other night. I think it's network related as I restarted and had 4G back.

Yes I too had to restart the phone and I would get 4G.
Wouldn't that be an issue with the sim card at that point? I wouldnt think its the phone because the sim is what recognizes Verizon LTE networks?
Cirrect me if I'm wrong, I want to figure this out.

Restarting causes the phone to re-authenticate with the network. Picking up 4G again is likely just luck of the draw. If a local tower (or towers) are having problems, you may keep 4G until there is an issue, then it'll disappear again until you swap towers, toggle airplane mode, or restart the phone. Without talking to VZW though, there is no telling if it is a network issue, or a device issue. Given the number of people that have seen problems recently though, I'm going to go with network issue.
I have 4G issues as well, seems just a day or so after rooting. I haven't seen 4G since; I've restarted several times, pulled sim card, put in airplane mode. I think I need the "get a new sim card" fix. I am rooted but no roms installed; does anyone know should I go full stock before walking into the store and asking for a new card? Or will I be ok since it's only rooted?
I had 4g issues this morning and this evening (in boston); reboots restored but i have no doubt this is verizon crap; my razr periodically had the same issue. At work i had no 4g issues. Drives me batty - I think the only fix is for at&t to record these issues and start using them in advertisements

Ok..I just replaced my sim from Verizon. They told me there was a bad batch of sims. So they gave me the 2nd batch. Please don't quote me, because that guy was a sales person who tries to sell me everything in the store...lol
I will let everybody know within a day or two.

I'm no longer having issues, in fact I'm now seeing 4g in areas that were only 3g before. I think it was just network related.
EDIT: See you got it sorted out. Sorry for the bump.
I've noticed over the past few days that I've really been bouncing around a lot. Seems to go through phases.

[POLL] Call reception - better worse than Verizon S3?

Anyone here who switched from a Verizon S3? I work in an office with people who have the Verizon RAZR and Verizon iphone with no problems but my Verizon S3 says no signal and dies by 3PM. I've switched it out and it still sucks for reception but I like most other things about it.
I typically use 2000-3000 minutes a month so reception for voice is EXTREMELY important to me.
I either will move to the HTC DNA or One if the S4 has the same reception issues I had with my Samsung Galaxy and S3 on Verizon. If your S3 never gave you any reception problems that is wonderful for you but PLEASE feel free to start another thread saying how great your reception is or for you to tell me I must have gotten 4 defective phones and SIMs. This thread is aimed at helping me decide which phone to get.
To be clear, this isn't a thread about iphone or DNA or RAZR, Sprint S3, Tmobile S3 or ATT S3 reception or how you never had reception issues on your S3. This survey is specifically targeted to find out if people who had reception issues with the S3 got any relief with the S4.
Please do not check "yes this is a question" as all Qs get moved to Q&A. If you post a poll put POLL in the title instead.

From what I have read, the CDMA S3 had a poor CDMA chip/radio so that's why lot of them have issues on Verizon/sprint. If the Sprint S4 is any thing like the verizon one voice/CDMA wise then it should be way better than the S3 and even better than the ONE.
I know you said this wasn't about the RAZR, but I have had two of them and both of them had very bad signal issues holding 4G. The first one even had a hard time holding 3G or any thing for that matter. I got a S3 from Verizon for free in the end due to the issues just getting worse and worse along with Flash player not working on update 4.0.4 even though Flash player should work just fine on ICS.

I'm much much much more concerned about call reception than 4G. I work with someone who has the Verizon razr and they never have reception issues at the office. I can't make or receive calls on my Verizon S3 at the office.

I had terrible S3 reception. The DNA has a solid Radio.
I'm hoping the S4 has a really good one too, or else, i'm sending mine back, the only thing that sucks with the dna is theres no root, and theres no way of s-offing it currently.
I am curious as well as samsung has a history with bad radios and hoping they finalyl figured it out, otherwise I will have to pass.

The DNA is a sweet phone. I came VERY close to buying one, but the lack of SD card slot (and only 16G) and non-removable turned me off. Other than that a very sweet phone!

I was close to getting the DNA as well but Sense seems a little sluggish on it compared to wiz and the battery was a bit underpowered for my needs. I can be on the phone with a client or tech support for hours at a time. There are rumors the One will have a larger screen on Verizon which should cover my issues.
If anyone has the Verizon S3 and the Verizon S4 it might be helpful if you showed network db side by side in an area with no reception or bad reception on the S3.
I just received my S4 today, hoping like hell that the reception was better than my S3. I travel A LOT and know every area in my 200+mile drive, that I have reception issues in. I haven't been able to use my S3 in my house, since I moved here 2 months ago; I believe its a combination of the metal roof and ****y phone, so I upgraded one of my lines to the S4.
I am finally able to walk thru every part of my house and talk without any.issues. I used to have no service in my kitchen, now I have 2 bars with crystal clear reception. I'll know tomorrow if its fixed the issues in the other areas I have issues in, but for now I'm excited.
I did active my old droidX a week ago to see if I could use it in the areas I always have problms, and I could, which means its the ****ty S3.
One other thing to note is the battery life. I've read that its horrible etc: I charged my phone to 100% before activation and I'm still running with 51%, 6 hours later and I've uploaded everything and been playing with the new features the whole night. I did have a 43 minutes call in there as well, so the battery life seems extremely compatible with my S3. I also ordered 2 spares with a charger from Amazon and I'll see how they stack up with the factory battery over the next few days. I'm a phone abuser for work; 5000+ text, 3000+ minutes and probably 10,000+ emails a month, so it will be put thru the paces for certain. I'll update my overall impression with the reception tomorrow night.
Sorry, I know this was long but I wanted to tell how I'll be comparing and already have been, to show a major improvement so far.

You Sir, Have Given Me hope.
You guys have all given me hope. When I read the op, I seriously thought I wrote it or my wife did. I too have problems using my s3 at work after switching from a Droid Razr to the s3. Everyone at work has an iPhone and have no issues with making calls.
Based on everyone's input, I'm almost willing to try an s4 out before I'm forced to switch to an iPhone 5 (those are the only options for work this time around).

I'm with you 110% Boe. For those of us who have bad reception issues with the S3 it can be a tough road getting people who are happy with their S3, to understand exactly how irritating it is to have a phone that does a lot very well, but can NEVER be trusted as a telephone. I am really looking forward to seeing the responses in this thread. I'm on Verizon.

Yeah for some reason they insist on posting things like I never have problems with my S3 (perhaps they never use it as a phone) or you must have gotten a defective one (all 4 times I replaced my phones and sims at difference Verizon stores throughout the country - amazingly bad luck).
i have a galaxy nexus and can say without a doubt that the s4 radios are better by far. way better. i keep a 4g signal everywhere my galaxy nexus would drop to 3g or 1x, matter of fact i have yet to lose 4g anywhere but in an elevator.
gps locks are also way faster.
very impressive.

I picked up the s4 this morning. Reception so far OK. I'm in the office where I frequently get no signal. For whatever reason today my S3 and S4 are getting signal. However, both are reading about 100db on average - no real difference between the two so i'm as yet, unconvinced this is an improvement over the S3. I'll be going to yet another place I frequently can't make calls on my S3 later today and we'll see how the S4 does. Clouds, lack of clouds etc can all impact reception so I'll need more testing to know anything regarding this phone's reception.'
Foxfi doesn't seem to work on the S4 but does on my S3 so I'll have to find another sharing program if I decide to keep this phone.

Trouble getting 4G LTE

Well, it took me long enough to figure out that the Verizon S4 has its own completely separate set of subforums from the International and AT&T versions.... No wonder I got no responses to my post over there. So, I'm reposting it here:
From yesterday:
My brother and I both got S4s almost 2 weeks ago. He upgraded from an S3. Me from a Rezound. He also has a work phone that is a Verizon Note 2.
We were out at our parents' house over the weekend. Our dad has a RAZR Maxx and a 4G Verizon MiFi for his house. All 5 of these phones/devices are on Verizon.
Both of Dad's devices and my brother's Note 2 were maintaining a steady 4G LTE connection. The Note 2 only showed about 2 bars, but it held it steady and never dropped back to 3G at any time while we were there.
But, both my and my brother's S4s would not hold 4G. We played around with network settings. Changed them from CDMA/LTE to Global, and then back. They would both occasionally switch to 4G for a minute or so, then always switch back to 3G.
I called Verizon tech support and they walked us through things including turning off the phones, pulling the SIMs and letting him push a new PRL to us. Nothing helped, so he told us to go get new SIMs. I did that yesterday and went back out to my dad's and it's still the same. My dad's phone and his MiFi maintain a steady 4G LTE signal and my S4 mostly just stays on 3G.
I also noticed that I went to the movies yesterday and when I was in the theater lobby, which is right in the middle of town, where there is strong 4G signal, my phone had dropped back to 3G there, too.
I'm still within my 14 day return period and I am seriously thinking of returning the S4 and getting a Note 2.
Does anybody have any better suggestions?
*********** then, yesterday ***********
I found a thread on the AC forums where a guy reported the same issue I'm having. He took the SIM out of his Rezound, cut it down, plugged it in, and he said that fixed his 4G reception problem.
I'm going to VZW after work and trying a 3rd SIM. This time, one of the old style, that doesn't support NFC.
*********** then, today ***********
I went to Verizon after work yesterday and got a new non-NFC SIM. Then went back to my dad's house. The SIM does not appear to make any difference. My phone still wanted to switch to 3G and stay there.
But, I did figure out one encouraging thing. I used Battery Monitor Widget to get into the Testing screen. There, I was able to change the phone from "CDMA/LTE (Auto PRL)" to "LTE Only".
After doing that, the phone went into 4G mode and stayed there, and actually worked fine. I turned on my hotspot and connected to it with my tablet and surfed for a while, with no issues.
This tells me that the phone's LTE reception is pretty much just as good as the Note 2 and other devices I mentioned before. It's just a software issue that is switching it to 3G mode when it doesn't need to.

[RESOLVED] Improving 4g/LTE reception?

So much jonesing for a 1080p screen with a recent Android version, snappy interface, and replaceable battery and replaceable microSD... I somehow forgot the reputation Samsung has for CDMA radios.
Whereas my Rezound provided consistent 4g at my home and in the park and downtown... my S4 gives no 4g at home (you read that right-- NO 4G at home), and occasionally some 4g in town. 3g is pretty consistent on the S4.
Short of
a) moving to a home on top of a Verizon tower
b) dropping a small fortune on a different phone,
how do I go about improving 4g reception on the phone? Is there anything that will help? Enabling/Disabling Power Saving mode? Fancy case? Carrying a cantenna around?
I've run the phone stock. I've also tried the VRUAME7 modem from arcanexvi's I545VRUAME7 Radio thread on my stock VRUAMDK ROM with no difference.
EDIT: Resolution was going to Verizon Wireless Store and having them replace with/activate a new SIM-- instant 4G connectivity after.
It wouldn't hurt to try a new SIM. Some folks, myself included, had bad SIMs that would give preference to EVDO over LTE.
Okay I was just at a Dennys and one of the customers with an S3 on VZW was showing me that he had 4G service. I'm wondering if my issue may be related to this being a phone purchase on Swappa from an east coast seller. I'm based on the west coast.
Pretty sure it isn't the SIM because the same SIM works fine in my Rezound and gives 4G service on the Rezound in the same areas where my S4 is stuck on 3G... That being said, I may drop by the VZW store to see if they can swap out the SIM just to rule out the possibility of something obscure with the SIM.

The SIM that caused me problems worked like a champ in my Galaxy Nexus. When placed into the S4, it would default to EVDO. Not necessarily saying that's the case with yours, but it's a quick and easy thing to try.

Thank you! Not sure if it was the physical change of SIM or if it was the configuration the tech was doing there in the store, but the whole process resulted in me getting 4G reception on my S4 all over town consistently and at home!

New to Verizon

Just picked up a new G3 and new service provider in Verizon. Is it common to be stuck on 3G majority of the time in a decent size city? It sometimes in a blue moon switches to 4GLTE, but won't stay long.
I am with tmobile currently as well as that is my main carrier, but needed good coverage in the bad areas of Pennsylvania. Have awesome coverage where I live with tmobile, however with Verizon not so much.
Is it common?
I guess I have 14 days to decide. Any feedback greatly appreciated,

take it back... verizon locks everything down tmo allows you to be free .
sorry i didn't actually help you in regards to your question.
The only time I see myself switch to 3g is where I have crappy service at my parent's place. Otherwise I don't have that issue..
However I'm also not in Pennsylvania so someone else may need to comment on that bit.
Perhaps they're doing tower upgrades over there?
The G3 gets really good reception, on par or better than the Motorola phones which are known to have excellent reception. I'd give it a day or so to settle along with a few restarts to see if you can grab an updated PRL. Outside of that Verizon may not be great in your area. I have to go outside to get a decent 4G signal, inside it's 3G most of the time.
That's the thing, I still have my T-Mobile phone. I actually live in Ohio, however work in PA and a little of West Virginia where I get no signal and can only make emergency calls. When in Ohio, where I live I get amazing 4G signal on lte. 40 down and 10 up to where on Verizon where I live I get 7 down and barely 1 up. It's crazy... Then again I am on 3G most of the time.
So wifi it goes....
Also is it normal to be on wifi and next to it the 4G/3G signal shows. I only have a gig of data is why I ask. Don't want unwanted charges on my bill.
T-Mobile g Flex unfortunately will still be my main phone. Unlimited everything.

Yep that's normal, nothing to worry about there
Ok, thanks. Just worried as T-Mobile phone goes straight to wifi symbol only.
You could try switching airplane mode on and then back off

Explain this a little more.
Go to network and Switch to LTE from global. I had the same problem and that fixed it

I did this and at 1st it gave me full bars. I did a reset for some reason and when it came back it's back to 1 bar. Weird....So does this mean I'll stay on 4G and won't pan back to 3G, if so might need to be on global in order to get signal in bad areas.
Thanks though, see what happens.
Things to try:
Power off take out the sim, power back on without sim, power off and put sim back in.
Call Verizon and have then send an update to your sim card.
Factory reset your device
Get a new sim card

It's a new phone and I would have to already take put the SIM. I mean I will as I dont get why I am constantly on 3G. Thought Verizon was good at penetrating buildings for 4G.
Not to mention even when I am on 4G it's no where near the speeds my tmobile phone gets.
Might have to chalk it up to so many people on big red....I guess as long as I get signal in the boonies I'll be okay. Just a little disappointed.
Thanks for the help.
I had this same issue and switching it from Global to CDMA/LTE fixed it for me. I've read that it shouldn't matter if it's on Global.... But I clearly saw the difference.
This G3 gets the same or better reception that my S4 does. I'm happy with it

You should be on 4G, if it is available in your area. Signal strength is the main reason it'll drop to 3G, but that's only when your 4G signal drops above -100 dBm. Somewhere around the -115 is where mine decides it's better to switch to 3G. I even get some 1X's here at my desk, but I've got a crappy signal at my desk. If you're on 3G most of the time, then there's a problem. As stated earlier, take the following steps:
FDR (Factory Data Reset.) You'll lose everything, so back it up.
Go into the VZW store and tell them you want another SIM card. (Try not to handle it with your fingers and tell them not to handle it with theirs either.)
Replacement phone is the only other alternative.
If none of the above works, then you probably do need to switch back to T-Mobile. Just remember, you only have 14 days to figure this out!
Have you looked at a coverage map? Verizon does have excellent coverage but all carriers have holes

Looks like Verizon has spotty service in the area you described. Vzw May not be the best choice for you in that area. Especially if you travel.

T-Mobile's version comes factory unlocked. It already has the TWRP recovery.
OTOH, T-Mobile's version is SIM locked and Verizon's isn't, so Verizon's version is more free if you ever need to travel internationally.

I got faith in the devs as far at unlocking this phone for a custom recovery!
