Dear xda community,
I've had my xperia z ultra for almost a week and I'm loving it. I notice I can get quite a lot of hours of screen time, always above 3:30 hours, which I think is a lot better than my s4. Anyway, I have updated to the latest firmware .475 and am very happy they resolved super sensitive touch screen. However I am still having this power drain issue. Please look at the pictures I have attached. It seems like android system uses a lot of battery. I know this is normal if phone is sleeping but I think this is too much.
Any ideas or possible solutions?

Try installing GSAM battery monitor if you haven't tried it yet.
Then you can compare your stats and data against other users Z Ultra's performance and judge, whether your unit is unique or not.
If you look into which apps are preventing your stamina mode (if u are using it, I do not know) activating, thus using system resources all the time despite the fact that your screen is off and assumed idling, you'll know what to do and how to take things forward from there.
Apps that need to send and receive data tend to be the culprit. Also some task killers tend to use unnecessary resources too...

Try remove your micro sd card and see the difference. I had my z ultra for 1.5 month and it got hot every 3-4 days until it fried and couldn't reginize my SIM card. So I went to exchanged for a new one, as soon as I insert my SIM card and micro sd card, the phone started to get hot again and battery discharged fast. Since I haven't download apps I figured it has to be the sd card, so I removed it and restarted the phone and it cooled down and worked like normal ever since.

I currently lose around 10-15% of battery every hour with very light use.

Hey guys please help. I barely use my phone and the battery still drains very quickly. If I charge it up to 100% before I go to sleep and then unplug it, by morning it is at 50%. The only sync option I have on is Gmail mail. I have 4G and wifi on but I really doubt those are killing my battery. In the time it took me to type this message I lost 2%. I can't live like this! Suggestions?
Ps for the first 2 or 3 days that I had my phone the battery life was fine. No issues.

Turn off 4g and WiFi for starters. Don't need 4g since lte is not out yet. And if your house has no WiFi makes no sense to have it on searching for something that is not there. Also hold home bottom and close apps and clear ram.

I've been having the same issue on my att galaxy s3. I think there is a bug possibly when the phone is having issues maintaining a data connection. I always know when I am going to have an issue b/c the phone will stay warm even when I'm not using the phone. The only solution I have found is to turn off mobile data. Restarting the phone every day seems to help as well. There are a few other threads from people having the same issue. I'm guessing it's the data connection connecting and disconnecting over and over again. Cell standby will usually show up as taking up the most battery life.

Unfortunately the lte does drain your battery. So does the keyboard vibrating with every click. Get a app that with shut down background apps when your screen is off and temporally disable data. Works for me since I usually have at least 10 to 12 apps running that I forget to turn off.

If you're using widgets that auto sync like fb, weather etc. By default they're set to sync every hour. The first day I got my phone I got 4 hours screen time and about 17 hours total on the battery, but I didn't have any widgets running. after I started running fb and weather it went to 1 hour screen time and about 9 hours total on the battery. Google+ was the main juice guzzler.

It really is a shame that we are disabling the design features of this awesome phone just to prolong the battery life. Are we really more concerned with battery life than the capabilities of this phone?

AT&T lte is not a huge battery drain in my experience. Your battery usage is not normal so you either have a bunch of social media going crazy all the time or some rogue apps preventing deep sleep. Try using better battery stats to see if you can track things down.
Also forcing Wi-Fi to not use power save is s big drain did you do that? *#0011# menu Wi-Fi

Did you recently connect to Kies because I was having probs with my SGS2 getting really hot and losing power as a result of Kies/a dodgy USB lead?
A factory reset solved it however ( remember to back up ) but sometimes just removing your battery for 90 seconds to reset the values works.

Turn off Google backup, face awake, try that for starters
First of all, switch off your phone for a while to see if there is problem in battery or its the apps you are running. If you think it is a stupid step,
Then try using some software like JuiceDefender or something.
In app manager, kill apps that are useless.
Also turn off features like bluetooth, gps etc. if on.
Reduce phone's brightness, recommended to set it to "auto".
Turn off useless vibrations and LED notifications.
You should now see significant improvemance in battery life.
Hope this helps
I have taken all these steps gone ahead to remove live wall paper, auto sync disabled, brightness is set at auto. And its still the same. I don't want to tow the line of hard reset because am not sure that would solve the problem coupled with the time it would take to get my sgs3 to suite me

I use juice defender which manages everything for me, an overnight schedule ensures the battery only drops by 1 or 2%
Sent via TCP/IP
okay so i thought i had a battery problem before i tried putting my phone aside (meaning no games, no internet browsing and no video streaming nothing, just using whatsapp and leaving facebook connected. I also have lots of apps and games installed over 15 or something)
If you decreasing screen time you will notice a HUGE difference (24hrs in my case), its basically down to usage, I have tried over 10 different roms and kernels as well as the v6 supercharger script, i dont ever notice the difference, EVER. unless of course i use a minimalistic rom with almost nothing to play around with, but if thats how u like it then go for that. Id say following all the fundamental steps will take you a long way
my final advice:
less screen time
when on the screen use the least brightness available
decrease stock brightness even more if you can
less app usage
if your not one to constantly play with your phone and customize stuff on it try installing a minimal rom like
|ROM|XXBLG8| IOIDroid Super Slim Edition | Buttery Smooth | V1.0.0 LIVE !! |
or
[ROM][4.0.4] Slim ICS (SGS3) - Clean, Simple & Fast (63MB)
i dont know if this is a placebo of not, but sometimes i notice improvements when i undervolt, underclock and limit to only dual core. believe it or not sometimes it has little or the adverse effect of saving battery
good luck man
And another question, which can be solved through the search function or Google -.-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937080
So here is my experience. Have been using android for years, have had an hd2 so I know how to get good battery life results. For some reason I easily lost 15-20% overnight with just the gsm 2g radio on. No matter what I did it drained fast even though deep sleep was fine, all extras sync and etc were off. 3hrs screen on time in 14 hours and it was dead.
I kept waiting for an update to solve this and it never came even though I was force checking it.
I ended up factory resetting the phone and as soon as it booted up an ota update popped up. Since then I am having nearly 6hrs screen on time in 40hrs,which is amazing.

I will try the juice defender route and hope that it solves my problem or else I will be forced to tow the hard reset route.

Greetings, I have seen a similar problem back in our hox forums. I have come here in peace to help, though. Recently, someone suggested bump charging, it's like a natural way of making your battery recalibrate itself without wiping battery stats or stuff like that.
First off, charge the battery until it says 100% while the device is on.
Then remove the charger, turn off the power, and charge again.
Remove the charger again when it says full while the device is off.
Turn it on again, then when it's properly booted, charge again, but don't use the device until it says it's fully charged already.
Mind you, we're not sure if it's just a placebo or not. Some claims to have had better battery life after doing this for once a month. I haven't tried it yet, but I thought I could share it here too.

Just to offer two cents from my experience with this phone.
I recently got a replacement for my s3.. the details of that are for another post, but this relates to battery:
when I first got the phone i started using it right away. I did not charge the battery until I got to the office and charged the phone while using it the first day.
when I got the second replacement phone I already had a second battery.
This battery was fully charged and immediately used that in the new phone. fully charged the samsung battery before I used it.
I noticed significantly better performance with the second phone. I think it was because of the way i treated the battery strait out of the box.
any one agree, or have a similar experience?

Do you have an Exchange account set up?
After the newest update i also notice that it has a high % drain even if i turn 3g off, gps and everything nothing unusual runs in the background that can explain high drain yet it does.. and i didnt notice that before the latest update and i havent installed any weird apps. I also have all my weather and news on manual update so i dont get what can drain the battery with internet off overnight.. its frustrating a bit.
I googled a lot before posting in here, tried many things but none worked.
This started happening around 2 months ago. I installed a battery calibration application from Play Store. After installing it, in place of making my battery better, it destroyed it.
Now my battery lasts about 6-7 hours with hardly using it (but wifi or 3g on all the time). When I depart at 7:30 to go to school, it is 100%, and at 13:00 my phone turns off.
I thought it was a problem of calibration, and i don't really know if that works. Tried many other apps. None worked.
Tried installing cwm and wiping battery stats at 100%. Didn't work.
Tried repairing with PC Companion or SUS. Nope
I bought a new battery 3 days ago, because thought that the problem was the battery and not the calibration anymore. Didn't work! My battery barely lasts 7 hours, when before it lasted a full day.
Tried factory reset. As you can guess Didn't work :crying:
Then I thought maybe the time has come to reinstall original rom once more. I did that yesterday. Installed from the beginning and rooted my phone, and formatted sdcard. Installed this systemUI too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762162 .
Thought that the problem would be resolved. But no. Today the battery dropped from 30% to 1% and turned off.
This is driving me crazy. What to do?
Have you ever heard of this problem? Anyone got the solution?

You can buy a new phone. (just kidding). Try this: Add this two lines (ro.ril.disable.power.collapse=0) & (pm.sleep_mode=1) to the end of your build.prop. If you don't know how to edit the build.prop you can learn here.
You installed new rom when this start? If yes try stock or some where you dont see that problem anyway this is nothing to do with battery stats. Every time when you charge phone above 90% then android make wipe battery stats automaticaly and even this havent nothing to do with %.

My phone started doing a crazy bootloop just out of the blue last night. I have never had a problem. I took the battery out to put my memory card back in. I'd been using it for my digital camera. This is not out of the ordinary. I do it all the time. But after I replaced the card, battery and cover it started this continuous boot loop. Sometimes it will go to the main screen and allow me to perform some functions, but then it goes right back to the bootloop. I am running the Padawan JB rom. I did the complete wipe, factory reset and re-flash. But it still did the bootloop. The only time it does NOT exhibit this issue is when the phone is on the charger. Then and only then it works perfectly. Is it the battery? Why will it bootloop without the charger and work fine when on the charger?

This is not out of the ordinary. I do it all the time. But after I replaced the card, battery and cover it started this continuous boot loop. Sometimes it will go to the main screen and allow me to perform some functions, but then it goes right back to the bootloop. I am running the Padawan JB rom. I did the complete wipe, factory reset and re-flash. But it still did the bootloop. The only time it does NOT exhibit this issue is when the phone is on the charger. Then and only then it works perfectly. Is it the battery? Why will it bootloop without the charger and work fine when on the charger?

Seen a few threads on this and the issue is usually the battery.

Thanks BubbaJoe. I'll try that. We'll see if that does the trick.

I got a new battery off of Amazon. And that did the trick. I can't even believe a bad battery would cause all this trouble. Thanks again for the tip!

Awesome. Glad it worked out for you. One last tip. To be helpful to the community, go back and edit your title and include [solved] so that people can see that something has fixed the issue. It helps reduce duplicated threads.

Honestly, I used to get tons of random reboots with Jellybean ROMs until...I flashed CyanogenMod 10.2.2, and then used SD Booster, Greenify, and AutoKiller. It freed up a lot of RAM, and made my phone superfast, supersmooth, and an eternal battery.
My theory (I could be wrong) is that the Note lacks sufficient RAM to run 4.2.2 smoothly, hence killing your background tasks with those apps and adding more cache seems to do the trick.

Lol! 40% of the time was on screen time, so like 10-11 hours. On those settings, my battery does not discharge when the phone is asleep. And it barely moves when the phone is on. I keep my screen brightness pretty low also. But I don't under clock or undervolt. If I did, I could probably squeeze another day out of the battery.
I've had the Z2 two days now and I'm afraid my unit has a problem:
Even in normal use it gets really really hot in the back, on the upper left hand side.
Also, the battery life is really not that great, which is disappointing for a phone with such a big battery (it is barely better than my HTC One M7)
I have neither rooted it nor flashed it, everything is pretty much stock (I have disabled a few apps like facebook)
From what I understand, it is not supposed to be that way.
Does anyone have suggestions? I would prefer not doing a factory reset
Try to get a replacememt
It seems units made before mid may have commonly had majour heating issues, bugs, lag bad battery etc etc etc

Mine was made in the 18th week (end of april, beginning of may)
I'm not really keen on sending it back, as it probably means several weeks of delay, with the shop I got it at.

Well you dont have much choice
Either stick with these unsafe issues or get a replacement
If you get a perfectly good unit back, you wont regrett the wait nor replacememt
You will find that the Z2 has an amazing battery life, the Z2 ive had hand with has lasted from 22hrs to about 49hrs with moderate/heavy usage
Device just got warm, not hot

I'll have to think about it. I was hoping there would be software solutions for those issues (they seem related to me: something is working too hard, causing overheating and increasing battery usage)
Check for deep sleep and wakelocks if any.

Also try doing a factory reset. Mine doesn't get hot and battery lasts very long. Up to 2 days with light to moderate.
At first it was awake all the time, even with screen off, so I guess there really was a bug.
I now have factory reset it, left it overnight without charging it, lost 9%.
Is that a normal number?
I've attached a screenshot of the power management app. Can someone tell me if there's something wrong with it?
My overheat issue cam from Google image backup. Turn it off and see what happen.
