Is it normal, that the phone gets really hot, if i play some games !? i mean, sometimes it's so hot, that i can't touch the screen ...

Completely normal

Mine heats up like crazy if I just use Wi-Fi intensive applications (Skype etc) while charging!!

What about playing videos whilst charging? It heats up like a freshly baked pie!!

Of course it gets hot if you do anything CPU intensive for any length of time (even more so on charge). The CPU has no cooling, no effective heatsink & is in a very enclosed space near other components that also get hot (including the battery). It's not like a PC CPU which has at least one fan & a heatsink (and vents), not to mention plenty of clearance (compared to a phone at least) between components in a desktop PC at least which allows heat to dissipate better.

OC to like 1.4 GHz, OC GPU, Max screen brightness, charge and play graphic intensive games :good:

It's normal

I know this is an old thread, but I just started having this problem. I've had my Galaxy S2 since March 2013 but only in the past week as the phone been heating up and draining battery power to almost nothing in a matter of four or five hours. I used to be able to use the phone multiple times over the course of the day with no issue of heating or battery power, but ever since Friday 12/13 I've had this problem. It gets so hot I keep it off until I need it, and I'm used to keeping it turned on. Even keeping it in airplane mode doesn't keep it from heating up. I've had other Samsung Android phone users tell me of the same thing happening only in the past week, not before that. Any idea what it could be?

[Q] My SGSII heat up alot

Hi all,
My SGSII heat up alot while charging. (for exactly i charge when phone have only 8%). The heat is not normal. It's more heat than while playing game.
And also it got high temp while using wifi and internet browsing between these days. Do you guys face the same problem?
SGSII is really great . But it heat up alot while playing game and turn on wifi.
Mine is a bit warm in the battery area when I begin charging the phone. But I wouldn't call it "extremely hot".
Another case is when I browse the web (that has flash) it feels a bit warm near the camera area (should be the CPU). Have not played games though.
There has been a discussion going on about that. It seems that some apps (eg Robo Defense) are not properly coded for the dual core. In addition some members also hinted, that the kernel is not yet optimized to compensate for that. The whole discussion started after a guy has "fried" his SG2 (beyond repair) while playing a game and charging at the same time. The phone still worked on AC power but no longer and battery and was unable to charge battery.
My recommendation would be,
- not to play games to long to heat up the device to much before new firmware is out.
- ...or use cet CPU to downthrottle to 500-800 MHZ
If the device heats up while charging I would try rebooting it (to get rid of processes which may still are open) or preferably charging while switched off

Which firmware are you using? I was on KF2, and experienced the phone heating up while playing games.
Updated to KF3 (stock, using Kies) rooted and all was well again. Even with excessive gaming, constant wifi on etc the phone just gets mildly warm.
There's no need to underclock etc. The heating issues just went away with KF3. If that firmware is not yet available in your area on Kies, then just put a newer custom ROM (Darky/Lite'ning/Villian etc) and try it out.
I remember whatsapping with some friends and I noticed my pocket felt really really hot. I checked and saw Whatsapp crashed. Also my battery sucked up about 30%. The phone was too hot to touch. I instantly took out the battery too let it cool down.
I never had that since. I expect it's resolved too, because I have KG1 now.
my firmware is KF2. now i decided to upgrade to KG1. is it stable now? any recommend rom?
As long as it stays below 50°C it is perfectly NORMAL.
And besides there is NO heat up issues with this phone.
Regards.
Hello
My s2 heated up alot too
so much so that it melted my simcard whilst it was on charge
also got led burn marks,
sent it to samsung lets see what they do 4 me
I already upgraded to XXKG1 and still heat up alot while playing pottery game.
This is why from the factory apple underclock their cpu's.
Samsung got the crazy idea of overclocking an already power hungry cpu.
A phone that gets too hot to touch under normal use is not fit for purpose

[Q] Do you experience heating issue on your S3?

I've been using my i9300 S3 for a few days now and it seems to heat up on the lower back when using wifi/data extensively. It's not hot to cook an egg sort of thing, but it seems hotter than usual.
Any of you experience such issues?
Hello
I am first time android user. Even i noticed this. Please let me know if it's ok.
It feels normal to me though....but I guess extensive usage may increase heat, just like computers and other electronic devices
I noticed the heat issue a lot more when I just got the phone. It still warms up a bit but i would say it is normal.
Though it did get pretty hot on my last flight during take off that I had to turn it off. Didn't want my expensive phone to melt.

It's normal I wouldn't worry about it to much although it will get warmer if it is being charged while using the program.
I am facing a similar issue ! My question is what temperature is safe enough ? I mean I have used few battery info apps. I have got a temperature reading of around 42 - 43 degree Celsius ! Is it normal ?

Do you own a computer of any kind? Not even that, any electronic device... a TV, PC monitor, anything? Use it for a while, and then report back to me any changes in temperature....
Is quite normal as long as your palm doesn't feel uncomfortable with the heat.

S3 overheating
Krico is absolutely right. It happened this morning when I was charging thru a notebook using both devices at the same time. And the heat lingered on even though I unplugged it. So I switched it off and now it is back to normal. Tks.
The phone can get pretty hot using WIFI and 3g extensively or 3d games. This is normal, electrical components heat up after prolonged use, your computer heats up your tv heats up. As long as the phone isn't burning your hand or exceeding 60C you should be fine. My phone gets warm to the touch and noticeably heats up but doesn't get HOT, if your phone ever gets HOT, turn it off to avoid damage.
I use an app called temp cpu v2. It displays a few interesting stuff incl. battery temperature. There are probably other apps like this.
With wifi on I get around 26 degrees but it sometimes goes up to 50 (or a little more?) on 3d games using wifi.
While charging it gets a little hotter.

Heat after gaming?

After how long does it get warm when you play games like NOVA 3 and such?
For me it does after like 10-20min which is somewhat short to me, but then again, I've never owned a proper flagship phone such as the s3 before.
My phone gets heated up to 47°c after 20mins of riptide.
What's the temperature your phone heats up to? I suggest you use badass battery monitor to check the temperature

Your phone does what? Are you overclocking or something? My S2 doesn't get to 47°C after 1h of NOVA 3 while still being overclocked(Both the CPU and GPU).And the S3 is supposed(And I think proven too) to produce less heat than the S2.
My S3 gets a bit warmer too. Think it will be fixed in subsequent rom releases. Same thing happened with my S2 when I had it; it went away eventually
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
My s3 barely produces any heat compared to my s2,that thing was burning the flesh in my hands... Maybe that's the reason nova 3 runs sluggish on my phone but not to anyone else?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Has stock roms ever fixed the heat issues through updates in the past (on other phones ofc), or do I have to root and flash a custom rom to decrease the heat?
My s3 also get very hot from both sides after playing 15 mins of shadowgun. I m using stock rom. And yea here temperature is 42C in pakistan lahore!!!

I can't find any details for the Exynos chip in the S3, but afaik most ARM devices have a Tmax (maximum CPU temperature) of 50-something (58?) degree Celsius.
So if it's already 42 outside, you can expect the system to be 52 as air-cooling is terribly inefficient, especially in hot dry air.
When you fire up some games it will thus go above it's threshold and automatically reduce it's performance to keep itself from being damaged due to overheating.

X+ overheating issues thread

Do other hox+ owners also have overheating issues?
Before i bought the hox+ i read many articles about the older one x and the fix for overheating.
I bought the device after it came out and thought that htc cannot make the same mistake again.
Well the device is really awesome thats a fact. But honestly, the non-eco mode is pretty useless as the hox drains the battery
so damn fast. I tried to play Wild Blood in eco mode and it was pretty choppy. Turning off the eco mode just made the game run a few fps faster
and made it as hot as my heater in the night time.
Do you guys also experienced this issue? I'm not sure if 49 - 51 degrees are counted as "too hot" but the device is blinking red and green and
it doesn't feel comfortable to hold the device for too long. I don't even want to mention the gameplay while charging. after around 10 minutes i lost about 10% WHILE CHARGING.
So far i just saw the battery stats thread there but no one really mentioned the temperature while gaming. Would be nice if you guys could share your gaming experience in this thread.
Cheers

Woah i've never seen blinking lights cus it got too hot??? Then again i beat Wild Blood on my iPhone 4 when it first came out and only took me about an hour, lol. Joke of a game, great graphics gameplay blah blah blah but storyline literally takes an hour to beat the game. Then what, no reply value and a waste of space on your device.
Anyways, it's gameloft for 1, they are not and most likely never will be very compatible with tegra devices, that's just how it is. 2. This is a hard working machine bro, it takes a lot of load because it can and have you seen any ventilation on this device or fans installed? Yeah, lack of all that where else is the heat to go? Just glad i have a 1yr manf. warranty and insurance with ATT on this puppy so when it blows itself up one day i get a new one .
I've never turned off power saving mode and play tegra 3 specific games with zero lag! I've also never not once had my device get very hot. At maybe 2 times playing Bard's Tale for about 40min straight and having 5 other apps in the background it started getting 'warm', not at all would i define it as hot. I've watched Netflix movies for 1.5hr straight on power saving mode, device didn't even get warm and not 1 flicker in performance or quality over wifi.
If anything maybe you got a bunk device? If you can't watch netflix or a movie on this thing without it getting really hot and lights flashing like you say, sounds like a bunk phone to me bro. If you can though, it's only stupid gameloft let me take all your money just to play our games that have no replay value and only take an hour to beat, then you have nothing to worry about. Get some tegra games bro, that's what this device is about and once you go tegra games you don't go back, lol!
thanks for your feedback deeznuts. Well except some gameloft games others run pretty smooth in eco mode. It really might be a bad implementation or incompatibility with tegra3. But you are right. I'd say that games like riptide gp look pretty good and do not consume much more batterylife than browsing. Watching movies is also no problem. Mass Effect is also such a batterykiller like wild blood that turns my device into a hot potato.
You are also right that its a fast device without a cooler. But compared to the current iphone generation or the snapdragons it seems pretty hot.
I guess apple did the right thing to patent a cooler for smartphones haha.

Yep but the more wrong things Apple chooses to do far outweighs the good, lol! Reason being not upgrading to iPhone 5 and more then happy with this device

To be fair to nvidia. Snapdragon is 4th gen chip built on 10 years of development. Even the GPU adreno started life as an AMD built chip. Many years ago.

Thats a true statement. Its hard to develop comparable chip in less than 5 years.
I just made a few benchmarks and found out that its really the gpu only that is producing the most of the heat. It seems that
Antutu Tester is just stressing the cpu cores but not gpu at all(powersaving off). At least the device stay slightly warm but not as hot as gaming in powersaving mode.
Actually does the powersaving mode also underclocks the gpu or/and the memory or just limiting the cpu to 1,3ghz?
I have attached a few photos taken with a Thermal Imaging Camera of the front and back before and after playing about 10 minutes of Avengers and Dead Trigger. The before photos arent entirely representative of the idle temperatures as I had been using the phone before taking the photos. Also, the colours are not consistently calibrated so a the same colour on two pics doesnt represent the same temperature. One last caveat, I didnt spend time to properly align the normal image with the thermal image.
from what i noticed any high graphics games or game using core power causes to overheat. like need for speed most wanted a few minutes and i can feel the heat of the unit i hope it can be fixed soon.
I don't seem to have any overheating issues but then again i very seldom play games on my phone...Day to day use like browsing watching videos the phone remains cool to warm.
The only time where i felt the phone got hot was when i tried watching high bit-rate 720p mkv using mx player and software decoding. but the phone never got too hot that it become uncomfortable to touch
Thanks alot for posting those pictures. Its getting really hot. I mean if the surface reaches over 40 degrees, how hot must it be inside the phone?
On the other side there is a nice decrease of temp visible in the lower area of the device. Maybe HTC really took it all in account and it really just gets hot but doesn't really affect the Battery.
Actually the batterylife isn't that bad. Today i charged it and it played pirates of the carribean 3 times and something in 720p on mx player (without sound as i didnt had dts codec). The battery went from 100% to 9% after 7.5 hours. Brightness on auto and data and sync turned on(2G).
i am having international version of One X+, no doubt the phone is amazing but not good for playing games or for VIOP calls,
it gets hot within no time when having these activities results unbearable for ears or hands.. any solution ? does HTC knows about it ?
zahid
It's a quad-core phone its normal to get hot with power hungry games ,plus 42c is not really hot . Now if your phone over heats when iddle I mean 52c + and the light are blinking green and orange than yeah its an issue send it to HTC
it happened to me once when i was playing bad piggies for an extended amount of time. and by extended i mean like 30 mins. it was crazy hot and i thought the flashing lights is a notification but later found out that it got too hot.
seriously nVidia, wtf are you doing
My phone doesn`t get much hotter than my old evo 3d even during intesive 3d gaming like nova 3, avengers initiative and sonic 4 just to name a few. It gets hot but not to the point where it starts to burn my figners, my laptop can do this. Sometimes the led start flashing red and green but even in that case the exterior of the phone is only around 35-40 degrees. The phone will automatically turn off if it overheats, that is when you have to worry about overheating and reporting to HTC, so do not worry about damaging it.

Do you play it in saving mode? i tried to play mass effect without saving mode and it took me around 15-20 minutes until the game crashed.
The battery indicator app said overheated with 50.8 degrees. According to HTC it shouldn't be a problem at all:HTC's statement
“If the phone is in normal use without playing games or calling for long time, the temperature should be around 37°C or 38°C.
But if you use your phone to play games or surfing internet for a long time, it will be normal that the temperature rises to around 55°C.“
Why the hell does the game crash then and several apps
are warning me about overheating???

You probably won`t believe me but running games in power save mode actually increases performance, because one cpu doesn`t ramp up as much it forces the other cores to kick in, this means that you have more cores running at a lower clock speed which equates to similar power consumption but far less heat, the reason why games lag is because the cpu is linked to the gpu and throttling when the chip gets too hot, you can desynchronise the gpu by using the renovate gaming boost app however you must be rooted first, great app, most aggressive min frees, optimizes cpu governor automatically and boosts gpu clock (decouples), also the tegra 3 chip was designed to go in and out of its thermal limit.
I've overheated on a few occasions now, all running a quite simple app (in my eyes) - CoPilot satnav!
Plus I loose more battery than the car charger can provide!!!

Like everyone had said it's a quad core etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah...
But why should we just accept it as a norm?! It's not right to make something and sell it as your new flagship when it has a MAJOR design fault by overheating so easily.
If HTC knew it would overheat then a redesign should have been done to allow for heat dissipation???

Phone always getting hot,

Is there a way to stop this or is my phone defective?

Is your phone rooted? If it is try lowering the cpu. Turn screen brightness down. See if that helps

By always, you mean all the time? Or just when doing a certain thing (playing game, watching video, etc)?
The phone should NEVER get hot. It will get warm after watching a video or playing a game for an extended amount of time, but never hot. Also, take off the back cover and see if the battery is hot. If it is the battery, remove it IMMEDIATELY, there is a chance it could explode.
AW: Phone always getting hot,
If you oc the phone to >=1,5 GHz/ 320 MHz you could also call it hot if you play 3d games ^^ "hot" is a little bit subjective, imo its warm not hot, but other might see it different...
But if its always hot, something is wrong with your phone....
If you have root you can check the CPU and battery temps with kernel tuner (if supported by kernel) or similar apps
Cpu should stay at <30° at idle and <50 while using it a long time; battery is throttling itself @ 36° afaik, but should stay under 33° if your not benchmarking and charging at the same time....
