[Q] rooting for dummies - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

hello
trying to root to cm10
using this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43326042&postcount=123
have some question:
Installing CM10.1 Internally on Nook Tablet
Using a disk partition tool (such as MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition) create on SD card a Primary FAT32 partition, and set the partition ID type for the partition to 0x0C FAT32 LBA and set its Active flag. Once this is done, the partition should appear as a (read/write accessible) drive under Windows. If you are going to use this card for backing up your NT, keep in mind that each backup will require at least 600MB (for a barebone stock or CM config) and size the partition accordingly. dont' care of any backups...
Obtain and copy to the SD card the following files:
MLO, u-boot.bin, and flashing_boot.img in boot.zip obtained from http://goo.im/devs/succulent/acclaim i don't see any MLO and u-boot.bin are not in the list ????
either one of the two recovery program image files: cwm_6.0.2.8_acclaim_recovery_sdcard.img (ClockworkMod Recovery (aka CWM)), or twrp_2.4.3.0_acclaim_recovery_sdcard.img (TeamWin Recovery Project (aka TWRP)) from http://goo.im/devs/succulent/acclaim/recovery , rename it to recovery.img. If you want to try out (or use) both, name your alternate choice altboot.img. which one would u suggest to use?
the file cm_acclaim_10.1.0_29JUN2013_HD.zip from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/...k-tablet-0218/
the file gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/...k-tablet-0218/
i know, im a total dummy. sorry and thanks for helping!

I typically use CWM for flashing (but use TWRP for making backup).

another problem:
this rooting really makes me mad.
i have the sd card inserted in the computer. the minitool partition wizard says it has 1.8gb unlocated space
windows says i have only 70 mb.
why? why? why?

Because Windows only sees the boot partition. The boot partition is very small (2-300 MB?), and the 70 MB is the unused space in that partition (or possibly the whole partition. It's unclear from what you say.).
Minitool sees the whole card and allows you to assign more space to any partitions, or create new partitions (that WIndows won't see, but your NT will).
That's really not a rooting issue. Do you have a problem with the actual process? If so, what kind of problem?

Do not hold the "n" while pressing power. First power and then relase power and press "n". Or just have it turend off and no USB cable connected, insert sd-card and insert USB cbale cnnected to charger.

1. Download, extract and burn this ready-made CM10 sd image to a 2 GB (?) (or larger - not 100% sure of the size since I use a larger card myself) sd card. Use this card as a bootable CWM card. Even if it's a complete run-able CM10 it also works as a bootable CWM! Very handy!
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/...r-nook-tablet/ t's a big download, but it's a more or less fool proof way of doing it! If I remember correctly there is actually room enough to put CM10 and GApps on the card. At least the one I use.
2. Boot into the recocvery of that card by pressing the "n" right after the power button and then hold the "n" to get to boot menu
3. In boot menu choose "sd recovery" ot something similar. This will take you to CWM
4. When in CWM install zips, wipe cache and Dalvik and you should be fine! it says there are no zip to install

Have you put any zips on the card you have inserted? You have to decide what ROM to install, download it and the approiate gApps for it and put on the sd card.
I'm sorry I linked to post where I didn't make that clear enough. I do say that there is enough room on the card for it and I also suggest a ROM to put there, But I guess a "for dummies" need to be clearer on that...
At the bottom of the quoted post
Edit: I checked, and there IS enough room for my favourite ROM and gApps on the boot section of the card. "My favourite" is the 1231 build on Iamafanof site. I have tried more recent ones, but I always go back to this one. Just my opinion of course! http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/...let-uploading/

When I make this card there is enough room for CM10 and gApps zips on it. There should be for you as well. If not, use another card. You can switch onec in CWM.

[Project] Dual-Boot between NF SDcard and Stock No-Rooting

What I want to do is Dual-Boot from the MicroSD card. Meaning the NC Boots to the MicroSD and from there it Decides to Boot to either Nookie Froyo or Un-Rooted Stock. Preferably, with Long Press Home Button to go to Stock and Default being Nookie Froyo. How should I go about this?
I haven't Rooted my Stock because for one B&N updates screw your Root. Another reason is so I can try out B&Ns Updates and see how they Improve their OS. Aswell as the Fact that if I screw over Nookie Froyo I'm not stuck with an inoperable NC for the Duration until I fix it. I can Simply ReFlash a Backup IMG of NF.
(Also there's always the Possibility that B&N will get Netflix, it's a Dream )

Thanks to the Great Half-Hour job by Rookie1 we have a working method.
Also you can try j4mm3r's Boot Menu or rookie1's Customizable u-boot
I will have a Complete All-In-One HowTo for all these methods soon so it's all in one place. Please Look Forward to it.
Not Compatible With Rooted Stock with Clockwork Recovery!
Some have reported they've gotten this to work with CWR but many have stated this doesn't work with it. If you have trouble restore your Backed up u-boot.
PreReqs:
Download this: View attachment u-boot.zip
Working Nookie Froyo or Honeycomb MicroSD card
Rooted Stock not Required
Will Work on Mac, Linux, and Windows
Directions:
Unzip the Zip File
Plug your NookieFroyo/Honey MicroSD into your Computer
Rename "u-boot.bin" from SD card and Copy it to a Safe Location for Backup Purposes
Copy the Unzipped "u-boot.bin" to your SD card
Safely Eject the Card
You're Done. Now whenever you Turn you NC on you can do this:
-Power On Normally for Nookie Froyo/Honeycomb
-Power On and Hold Home Button for Stock
-Power On and Hold Vol+ and Vol- for Recovery

tried that, wouldn't boot off the card (although most likely the I somehow screwed up the image)
Yea, all you need to do is remove the card to boot into stack, or keep it in to boot to that ROM. I would however like to see something like this. I hate removing my card all of the time (yes I complain a lot haha), though I can tolerate. I mainly need a way to use an OS on the SD and still be able to use some of that space for the stock OS when I decide to boot that. Hopefully someone knows what I mean.
Total guess here, does this need a custom bootloader to choose the right set of boot partitions?

I agree, SD card placement could be better. But, it could also be A LOT worse.
On my EVO, I have to take off the battery door and remove the battery to get to my SD card. Talk about a pain.
This is about half-an-hour hack job and totally untested. Unfortunately I don't have a SD card handy to test. If you are brave enough, try to replace the u-boot.bin on your nookie froyo SD card using the attached file (remember to backup your original). Pressing Home ('n' button) while boot up should skip booting from SD.
ps the stock ROM will mount 1st partition on SD to /sdcard. If your SD card is nookie froyo, you don't have much space on your 1st partition.
pps This is modified base on my eMMC dualboot code. I've changed the recovery key combo to VolUp + VolDown. If you need to go to recovery and have this u-boot.bin on your SD card, remember the key combo change!

I'm going to fire it down later today. Here is the fix in another thread to share the same partition on the SDCard. Requires root or some skills.
UPDATE: Backed up stock NF u-boot.img and replaced. As-is boot is to SDCard. Boot with home key ("n") pressed is to internal. Seems to work as advertised! Noted that you get the non-stock kernel boot image followed by the stock animation. Is that because it is doing a chroot in there? Is the kernel used the one on the SDCard? Excellent work BTW.

I have it working on HC v02 and v03. And it works fine.
Sounds like you may not have overwitten the original u-boot.bin on the SD since it did the default action for "n"?

[Q] Bricked nook tablet (boot video added)

My nook tablet is bricked
Turn on the tablet will see the screen will a big n
and nothing happen
I tried to boot from sdcard but it seem don't recognize the sdcard during boot
putting zip files on sdcard is not working
CWM sdcard and ubuntu sdcard also not working
cannot get into CWM and how can I fix it?
I spend over 5 hours but nothing work......
Sometimes the SD Card boot "only" works by plugging in the nook power cable.
I tried more than 50 times by plugging the power cable and still the same....
BTW thank you for answering, if you have any other method, once I can do it, I will try it....
Is the Nook store near by ?
Sad to say no...
I am from Hong Kong....
What SD card are you using, i.e. Class and brand.
The higher class cards do not work all that well for booting from. The Sandisk Class 4 card, any size I imagine, works well for booting off card.
Not sure if this is your problem, but trying a different card my be a good direction to go for a fix, if you can get into CWM it will help.
Also, what specifically did you do/try to get yourself to this point? Always helps to know how you broke it to be able to fix it.
I am using sandisk class sd card
This happen will I try to change back from CM9 with new kernel and TWRP to CWM and CM7.2
After flashing CM7.2 and CWM, it successfully boot for once and then get into this situation on next reboot
I tried ubuntu recovery, sdcard version CM7.2 and this, but nothing work....
It looks like you have a similar problem to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27381972. I think, form skimming over the thread they were able to get into CWM from sdcard - after many attempts. If you can get to that point you should be able to get an adb connection where as you can work your way out of this. Just read the linked thread, it should point you in the right direction.
Good Luck
I tried more than 100 times still noting happen
But when plugging in the power cable and boot the tablet, the indicator keep orange light and not green as it is in that post...
more options
what sdcard version of CWM are you using? you should try with another sdcard just in case, the procedures for a succesful CWM sdcard are the following:
For Windows users:
- Power off your NT and remove sdcard
- Put your sdcard into a card reader (preferably)
- Format your sdcard with SDFormatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/eula_windows/ (recommended) or any other but not windows native.
- Download latest Win32DiskImage-binary.zip from https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download (v5.0 recommended)
- Unzip the file
- Run Win32DiskImage.exe - Right click "run as administrator"
- Click the folder button and navigate to select the .img file you just unzipped.
- Click on the disk drive letter label on the right, and choose the letter that corresponds to your SD card.
- Press Write. When it finishes, press Exit.
- Safely eject/remove your sdcard and put it back to your NT
- Plug your device to the a/c power or PC using the USB cable, let it power on by itself do not press any button.
WARNING: This will completely erase your microSD card. Be sure to back it up!

OK let me get in puter I have other options. Obviously something in the boot process is corrupted
Edit: back!
Please try the following:
1. Verify the md5sum the ROM(s) you want to install just to make sure is not corrupted
2. Follow the instructions i posted in here to flash another CWM to discard CWM being part of the problem. Now as you already have the CWM sdcard you just need to add 8gb-16gb_cwm_internal.zip to the sdcard then boot again into CWM sdcard and flash that package
3. After that remove your sdcard and select reboot system now from the CWM menu, if your device boots fine then Congrats, if not then read the options below:
4. Read and try this. If no go, goto #5:
5. Read and try this
LAST RESOURCE:
6. [unbrick] - Fixing partition table, or completely dead nook. Use this ONLY if you have the 16GB model as you did not mention that detail in your posts i'm giving you a warning!

Right i forgot to add that @meghd00t's cwm sdcard already contain the 2 files (tools) that @soshite was talking about , so basically you just need the cwm sdcard, my partition images and adb working.

after trying option 6, the tablet now can boot into internal CWM
But after I flash CM7, it still keep booting into CWM rather than CM7....
Thanks for all, I can now get into the stock 1.4.0
I flash the flash-restore-stock.zip from here in CWM
and then using acclaim_update.zip to restore the tablet back to 1.4.0
I guest I may change the boot data and get mess up with it
Finally, thanks again for all help:laugh:
Yeah, for everyone else out there:
You must have stock recovery in order for the acclaim_update.zip to work.

Unable to boot from CWM SD card after resize - is this normal?

I want to install CM7 internal rom but fail to boot from SD after I increase the card space to full capacity. The screen remains black for 20-30 seconds after plugging the cable. And then it will bypass the CWM and launch directly to rooted OS. However, I cannot place the ROM without resizing the card space.
One more question: is it safe to remove the SD card after the system is booted into CWM mode?
Any advice to install CM7 will be much appreciated
Thanks in advanced.

I had the same issue with a few cwm image files. Finally found the cwm files in zip format. Then I just copied them to the root of a blank SD card. I will try to zip them and upload them somewhere tomorrow. Its nice to have an 8gb cwm card.
Thanks guys. Yes a 8gb CWM image will be useful. Anyway, I just copy the CM7 beta zip file to the device internal memory and get it installed. Despite some technical errors (like google play not working), CM7 runs fine basically.
Ugh. Managed to trash my partitions and spent the most of the night learning a crash course of adb. Got things back to normal now. Will try to find my SD stuff tomorrow! Sorry for the delay!

EDIT! --
Right, so FINALLY got my NT back to proper working order.
I'm pretty sure I downloaded this file FROM these forums, however, a few searches turned up nothing, so I dropboxed them.
Here
Format your SD card, giving yourself the full partition to work with. Then unzip that file, and copy the contents (4 items, 1 folder) to the ROOT of the SD card.
That will make your SD card bootable, and acutomatically load the CWM recovery stuff. From there, you can backup your NT's current config.
Also, RE: your Google Play issue, you need to install the proper Gapps for your ROM,
To do that, click HERE then go down to the bottom of the first post, that's Veronica, and she rocks. I've learned more from her about all this stuff than most anyone else, and we've never talked.
ANYHOW. Go to the bottom of her post, and see her "My XDA FTP" link? Click that ( I didnt want to direct link it without her permission).
In there, you'll see a folder called gapps, navigate to there, and down load the gapps-gb-20110828... zip file. Copy that to your shiny, new CWM recovery SD card, and then boot from it, "install zip from SD card" "choose zip" choose that zip file, install it, and you'll have access to the google play (after market updates automatically) and all the other google features!

[Q] NT With CM7 & CM10 Cannot recognize WIFI

I am new at rooting, this is the first device I have tried to root. I followed the thread for a triple boot CM7 , CM9 and CM10 (also stock OS) from Malloneem. I decided to only flash CM7 and CM10 to NT 1.4.3. Everything worked great, except during the initial setup of both CM7 and CM10 it will not recognize my WiFi. I have tried twice, after first time I wiped NT and reformatted the sd card and started from scratch. same result both times.
I read through the replies and noticed that someone else had the same problem. the response said to wipe the cache and it should fix the dalvik. I wiped both the cache then tried and then wiped the dalvik and had the same results. With the CM10 it says "turning on wifi" and stays there.
I am a new member to xda so I cannot post a reply to the original thread.
Any help would be much appreciated.
If I cannot get this to work is there another method where you can use CM10 and stock OS? (something that is extreamly easy to follow)

You can use this:
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...-1-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet-0110/
Write the image file to an SD card and you'll be good to go. You can use a repartitioning software to expand the partitions on your SD if you want. Use the instructions on the link I provided.
The SD card image will contain CM10.1 4.1.2. If you want to use a different ROM you can download the SDC version of any ROM ( has to be SDC!), place the zip on your SD card or internal storage. Boot into SDC recovery and installed the zip file. You'll need the GAPPS zip also (which has to be SDC also.)
Thank you for the help. My appologies for the redundant question but when I flash this ROM I will be able to bounce between CM10 and the stock B& N OS correct?

Yes. Because CM 10 will be on your SD card. Stock will be on your internal. If your internal partitions or anything is messed up ( maybe the reason you can't boot stock) you can tell from CM.

Thank you again. I have read throught the instructions on the link you provided and I am a little confused on the partitioning part. As I mentioned before this is my first time rooting anything. The instructions on the triple boot regarding the partitioning of the sdc were clear giving sizes for the newly created partitions etc., I didn't see that on this link (unless I missed it). Could you explain it so a newbie can understand it?
Thanks.

Well is there any reason why you would like triple boot? You need a fairly good size SD card if you want three systems. I just provided the simplest way to run cm on the nook. Write the image to your SD card and it will make it boot able. If you want to triple boot then setup your SD card partitions like you had before, but you only need to install the zips as alt boots.
Again, you probably don't need triple boot. Cm10+ has everything you'll need.

No, I dont need the triple boot. Being a newbie I may have misread something (probably the case) but the link you gave me directed me to partition the sd card. it was this portion that was not clear to me. I was referencing the directions for partitioning on the triple boot thread as a comparison. The site you gave me said to partition the card but gave reference as to how big to make each partition. I don't need the triple boot.
My kid uses the NT to help read (read to me, etc...) I wanted something to get more of a tablet feel while keeping the stock system as well.
Thank you again. I appreciate the help. I will look at it again.

On the iamafanof site you can scroll down there will be an SDC image. There is a difference between the image and the zips. All you need to do is download the SDC image, write it go your SD card using an file writer ( win32 disk writer will do) and your SD card will be ready to boot. Put it in your nook and and it will boot cyanoboot and should automatically do a SDC boot. It takes a little bit for the first boot to start ( usually 2 or 3 minutes)
Once you get your nook to boot cm I can tell you how to expand your SD partitions to hold more apps.
If you still have problems with WiFi it may be a different problem ( shouldn't happen).
If you need help or need a step by step guide I can find one or make one for you.

Just in time, "hot off the press" (almost) step-by-step guide: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...-2-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet-0416/.
For a more stable ROM build, use the CM10.0 image dated 12/31 in cm-10-20121231-NOOKTABLET-acclaim-HD-SDC-img.rar posted at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/.

Thank you for your help. I worked and was simple. If you could explain the partitioning that would be great. If not, its working just the way I want it.
Thank you again!!

You have 4 partitions on your SD card: boot, system, data, sdcard. Your boot partition holds the files the boot CM. This is where recovery, mlo, uboot, etc is. System holds files essential for the ROM to work.
The only two you need to worry about are data and SD. Your data partitions holds apps. That is when you download an app the files in the apk file are put there. This would be like your internal storage for any phone or tablet. SD card is like an external SD card for your phone or tablet. Its where extra data files, photos, music etc go.
Depending on what size of SD card you have determines how big you can expand your data or SD partition.
Using a partitioning software ( like GParted) you can change the partitions and expand them to the side you want. I have a 16 GB SD card. So I expanded my data partition to 4 GB, and the rest went to SD card. Its okay to delete data or SD partition to expand it, but don't delete boot or system because you'll have to reformat the card and write the image file to the card again ( and ain't nobody got time for that.)

[Q] How do I access CWM again?

Last night I rooted my wife's nt from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037368 Got my brown box, went to CWM installed .img worked like a charm. When it came time to install CM7 then CM10 I kept getting "no files found" which then I realized I still hadn't checked the "USB debugging" or "allow unknown sources" because it was still hidden (I'm assuming it's because of the 1.4.3 update. So I just reboot nook without CM so I could go to my hidden settings. Checked the appropriate boxes, downloaded goo manager and tried to install them through goo manager... no dice. It just keeps booting with the "n" flash and doesn't show me the awsomeness that is CM animation.
I have 2 SD cards I am using (2gb scan disk I used for the .img) and an 8gb scan disk (that one has an HC on it). I tried the 8gb and it wasn't working so I tried the 2gb which I think was a mistake now because I reformatted it. (you'll see why in a minute.)
Neither of the SD cards were working so I was trying to access CWM through goo manager, by rebooting into recovery... again no dice So then I thought to myself, "well why not just rewrite .img to the 2gb and hard boot that way... well after I initially wiped it to put the ROM and gapps EVERYTIME I try to write the .img on the 2gb I get "file size is too big" I re partitioned the SD just like before and it will not write because file is too big. So I said "okay maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I have a huge 8gb I can use"... same thing, file is too big.
Where did I go wrong? I am thinking that maybe I don't have the most current CWM I think it's 5.0.3.x don't quote me. Did I corrupt my 2 SD cards? It was very difficult to find a .img that didn't have a broken link does that have anything to do with it? Any help would be great!
I want to root and install everything internally so I don't have nook anymore can I get there from where I'm at, or do I have to reboot to stock and start over again. I hope I didn't destroy the two SD cards I have. Thanks for any and every bit of imput you guys!
I would suggest you start over again and here is really easy way to do it:
Very handy!
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/ t's a big download, but it's a more or less fool proof way of doing it!
Once CM10 is installed it probably comes with CWM (the one I use does), so to get into CWM next time you need it, just hold "n" like before, but no need for a CWM card.
Edit: I checked, and there IS enough room for my favourite ROM and gApps on the boot section of the card. "My favourite" is the 1231 build on Iamafanof site. I have tried more recent ones, but I always go back to this one. Just my opinion of course! http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/03/cm10-0-jelly-bean-for-nook-tablet-uploading/

To flash CM10.1 internally, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43326042&postcount=123 for some pointers.
digimax: am I writing anything to the SD card, or just drag and dropping files? I tried the drag and drop but I don't get the cyanoboot it just boots to nook. So I extracted the boot.zip and only drag and dropped the 3 files from the boot.zip and still just boots to nook. I know it''s simple (it was the first time I rooted my ole shift evo).
The process I describe installs everything internally and is the easiest way to do it. Like I say: almost fool proof.
