[Q] How do I unlock the bootloader? [read on] - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

The youtube video I found isn't thurrow enough for me to understand, if someone can either direct me to a much easier video to comprehend or in steps on this thread how to unlock it and then root the device itself. Thanks!
EDIT: I have a T-Mobile LG Optimus L9 P769 if that help's any. Thanks for any responses!
EDIT2: Also I tried this with my phone and all it does is reboot it, so at this point, I do not want to either soft brick my phone to the point of no return, or just break my phone. So any help would be nice, thanks once more!
~Joe

Whatever I give up on trying to unlock the bootloader on this, I'm not smart enough to follow any tutorials or anything, and no one is going to help me anyways, and all there going to say if someone DOES reply is "use the search" or this or that, whatever. I'll just leave it as stock and use the phone like it is.

Unlocking bootloader for P769 is hard. I assume the youtube video you mentioned is from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277639
This post is the most complete tutorial on the topic, and this is the only method that works so far. The method in your "Edit 2" only works for P760 (so it's bad it self-claims to work for all L9 variants). If you feel the youtube video is too hard for you to follow, giving up is not too bad.

That's weird, says it works with all L9's. Guess it lied. I got my device rooted but I want to unroot it now. :L

For unroot you must reflash firmware with kdz

Nope, I found another way cuz I'm good like that. All you gotta do is install SuperSU and go into settings and look for permanant "UNROOT", then it unrooted me, I even checked and it said Not Rooted. Thank you SuperSU

This phone is a lot more useful with root, but if you are happy without it ehh. Are you on 20f kdz? If so, you can add move to sd with root and remove root, and it will stay after you unroot.

I tried adding those "two lines" to the build.prop but it wouldn't save what do I use to edit the build.prop so it will save without errors? Or to flash scripts? I tried smanager but it didn't work, any other choices?
EDIT: Yeah I'm on 20f but I don't use kdz , I got it OTA.

I tested it and it adds it to the build.prop but it doesn't work, when I try to move a downloaded app to the SD Card, it says "Cannot move app". Thanks anyways
What I like about it though is the backup feature, that's cool if I want to go back to my old build.prop if it doesn't work.

Are you making a KDZ or bin/fls? If KDZ, can you share the steps involved in extracting the KDZ and re-creating it? It would be nice if the KDZ could be pre-rooted too.
Also we need a clean stock KDZ for un-bricking.
When i get home from work i will look into formatting a KDZ since we seriously need one for our phone i believe I have the LG tools still. And finish deodexing.

Wow this sounds great! I was just looking at the google now apk for ICS. Of course I had it when I was on jellybean on my other phone. I love this phone, I rooted it thanks to all of you guys, and I have CWM on it. Though it's broken down into two parts: 1)backup 2)blobs. Backup has a 27.5 MB file and Blobs has 1.35 GB. Thanks to artas182x for the CWM btw! I'm very nervous about trying to load the recovery since we don't ahve a KDZ for this phone so thanks a lot for your help!

Why people say there is no kdz for this device ? Of course there is, read the downgrade to 10a firmware guide and get the 10a or 10e firmware kdz from the sites mentioned there...

What about V11a for P769? A Canadian Wind Mobile KDZ for P769 can be downloaded here
A user also confirms it worked for him in this post
I dont know it can be rooted or not as I dont own this and not tested, but official KDZ for P769 exists and at least UNBRICKING is possible on soft-bricked P769 phone.
At least, we can say, a Canadian phone is better than DEAD phone. Lolz

Yes the system is working, only the LG keyboard is freezing (force close) so I restored its apk and odex.
It seems that other apps are working. I followed this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767392
Edit: the LG Keyboard app still doesn't work after restoring apk and odex and reboot. I will install another keyboard for now ..

unlock bootloader lgms769(metropcs)

ok i have a lgms769 from metropcs i flashed the t-mobile 20vf kdz( the lg p769) i have root but cant unlock bootloader or install recovery but i have root, i had it unlocked til i flashed a wrong rom and had bricked it.
someone please help
+1 this.I'm not gonna even bother flashing a TMO ROM. Too much headache.
I'm also frustrated that there are no kdz files or ROMs specifically for the L9 MetroPCS version.
Lgms769 is exactly like P769. Another thing (to OP) you would know if you unlocked the bootloader. Unlocking bootloader requires flashing euro kdz 20b, and you will mess your phone up if you don't do some reading.

but with the P769 firmware, does the phone still function properly on MetroPCS's 4G ??? And is there no simple way to unlock it? Seems to be way too complicated.

Yes it operates fine on the T-Mobile ROM. MetroPCS and T-Mobile have merged together.

On OP is a tweak to add move 2 sd, and a swap script that will allow you to install large games. Since you have rom toolbox just use it to change the build.prop and add the swap script (set at boot)

Metro already allows moving to SD card. That's where the script idea came from I believe

I added it to the build.prop, not unless they changed something when it finally came out. That option was not present in the build.prop of the kdz I got from lg. I found this out by comparing the build.prop of wind and T-Mobile.

I am a newbee to embedded devices, can someone help me or let me know what I can do with this mobile (LGM769 MetroPCS)?
Can the bootloader be unlocked and can I run custom ROMs on it? I read a lot of posts which just confused me (Maybe it's my Multiple Sclerosis) maybe I am just thick either way some help would be much appreciated. I know this mobile is getting old but it's the only thing I have.

No brother, this phone is definitely a nightmare. Unlocking the bootloader is the tricky part. I haven't tried myself, can't afford for my phone to be down while attempting to unlock the bootloader. There are those who have succeeded on the first try and there are those who have tried many times and failed.
If you have plenty of free time on your hands, then I'd give it a shot. But, before you do, make sure you have LGs drivers installed on your PC as well as the OMAP4 fastboot drivers. Because of the OMAP4 fastboot drivers, this phone is practically unbrickable. Just search the threads in the L9 forums for 'fastboot'.
As for your device getting old, I still have a Optimus One variant, P509, that's still running today. And there's a KitKat ROM for it too. I really wish the L9 was as easy to manage as my Optimus T is.
Best of luck
Thank you for the reply I'll check it out because this is my only mobile right now. Might have to rethink it. I read the whole thread and noticed that this so-called "devil phone" is not worth the effort. Next time I will just purchase a mobile that has been boot-loader unlocked and root potential and be done with it..lol
Cheers!

Root de la Vega [SM-N900A KNOX 0x0]

This has been replaced by Universal Root de la Vega!
Question & Answer
"Root de la Vega" What kind of name is that?
It's named after Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility.
Can you help me with the drivers?
No, but you can head over here for help with drivers.
How do I get into download mode?
Method 1: adb reboot download
Method 2: Pull the battery out, unplug the usb cable, reinsert the battery. Hold Volume Down + Home + Power. Follow the instructions on the screen.
How was this root method accomplished?
By hex editing the system image to call a script on the sdcard as root.
Will rooting or downgrading or flashing stock trip the Knox flags?
No, KNOX flags will not be tripped!
Will root survive a factory reset?
Yes, it does.
Do I need have to fully wipe my phone when rooting?
Yes. If you don't you will get lots of nasty force closes. I have yet to find a way around it.
Does Xposed Framework work on a rooted AT&T Note 3?
Yes, it has been updated to work fully with the Note 3.
Will rooting report system as custom and display an unlocked lock on the initial boot screen?
Yes. It can be removed by installing Xposed Framework with Wanam Xposed and enabling Security hacks > Fake system status.
Titanium Backup is giving me problems, how can I fix it?
Check out this thread. If you are still having issues, please take your concerns to the dev, they are not related to rooting.
How do I open a 7z file?
With 7zip!
Can I do this on OS X/Linux?
No, not until heimdall is updated to support the Note 3.
Can I unroot?
Yes, use SuperSU full unroot option or flash stock.
How do I flash stock?
Follow the first 3 steps of the instructions.
I am getting a "Prevention Information" popup after running a root app, how do I disable it?
From terminal emulator or adb shell as root, run; pm disable com.sec.knox.seandroid
Or freeze the Knox apps with Titanium Backup.
Email is force closing, how can I fix this?
Unfreeze My Magazine.
Outstanding dude!! Could I ask if you could post the stock image as well in case users wish to return to stock? Also congrats on being the first post in the original development thread!

For example you stated up above that flashing back to stock will remove the custom status and flashing back to stock will take care of that. So are you saying that flashing stock will NOT trip the counter?
I'm just really curious.

[GUIDE] Root your stock L9 in 2 minutes - LGPwn

Yes, I just rooted mine under 2 minutes, you can do it too.
It works with up to 20h for now.
This is not by me, it is by @jcase, posted in XDA Security, but I think it deserves a thread here.
Edit: actually it has been mentioned here.
1. Go to this thread by jcase
2. Download his app at the end of the post LGPwn.apk
3. Install it (remember to enable installation from unknown source)
4. Run the app LGPwn
5. Follow its instruction, basically:
* click RootMe to run LG BackUp app
* go through BackUp app's 5-6 intro screen and accept its TOS if it is the first time you run that app
* select Restore
* select Local Storage
* select LGPwn
* wait for phone to reboot
* go to Play Store to install SuperSU or SuperUser
Why?
I started this thread since I found no official mention of LGPwn anywhere. I recently have LG to repair my P769, and it comes back with 20h. And I don't want to setup the offline kdz root method, so a google search get me to LGPwn.
If you cannot make the method work, try to follow this
chadteck said:
What I did was restore the backup and prior to clicking the button to restart, plugged the phone into my computer. I was prompted with a SuperSU confirmation dialog and I granted access.
This hotplug wasn't necessary with previous ROM versions, but maybe something changed. I read that was how the exploit worked, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Hmm, in L9 General forum, search for LGPwn and that thread is no where to be found (but this thread is found ).
And too many? I count 2: the original adb restore method and Lelus method. And now the simplest one: LGPwn method.
Edit: I know why! The other thread is in Android Dev!!! Not sure about others, but when I buy a new phone and want to root it, I will go to General forum to look for root method, may be Q&A, but definitely not Android Dev!!!
Anyway, my point is: LGPwn deserves a STICKY thread, so that new people go to this forum to root their device should not go with those lengthy (both in text and in time) KDZ offline method (with scary anti-virus alert)! How do you ask for that thread to be made sticky?
Don't do a factory reset after rooting via LGPwn, you'll get a 'sleep of death' only to be awaken by ripping out the battery, this happened to me and I had to flash the kdz to fix it

Actually, people Google "[Phone name] Root." And it pops up. The general section is for general things. The development section is for development (root). General can have repositories with links to items in development, but development should stay out of general.
Thanks anyways I guess.

If you look at what "sticky" in the general section and dev section, you will see what each section is about (4 out of 6 stickies of general section has root in their titles, and 1 out of 20 threads on 1st page of dev section has root in their title). And definitely development is not root nor vice versa, I am 100% sure on that , and root is not even a pre-requisite on the dev section (think of an unlocked boot loader device, root is just a mean to get it unlocked and then, people can do all creative things on android).

Root exists because of development/cracking... Oh well, thanks for the thread. It'll help someone ^-^
reminded me of the days back in 2010 when I had a LG GT540 OPTIMUS(sadly robbed) and we had app called Z4 ROOT.
does this app has in built ROOT remover...?

Sadly no, this app is more like an author's proof-of-concept rather than an app.
Oh, I think I did use some app similar to Z4ROOT to root my LGp509. Anyone used iOS and jailbreak their devices with just a slide on jailbreakme.com? Just love those one click and done type of deals .

Don't do a factory reset after rooting via LGPwn, you'll get a 'sleep of death' only to be awaken by ripping out the battery, this happened to me and I had to flash the kdz to fix it

Sorry for the bump, but I'm probably getting a Nexus 5 for Christmas, so I'm giving my L9 to a friend. Would it be safe to do a factory reset after running LGPwn, or would I have issues like that guy earlier in the thread?
I'm on the P769.

accidentally let it update to 4.3, how do I root my phone now?

I think I might have accidentally let my VZW Note II accidentally update to 4.3. (although I swear that it did it by itself without my permission. or it that not possible? I have denied it for a long time)
Anyway, what are the chances of rooting the phone now? How do I root it?
Thanks!

Saferoot.. search it in the forums.. just a reminder bc A LOT have people been doing this.. Rooting your phone does NOT allow you to install custom recoveries or Roms. .so please don't make that mistake of thinking you can flash something

Rooting can be done using Saferoot and framaroot and others.
But be advised as said previously. . This will not allow you to have a custom recovery like TWRP, Philz or CWM and install custom roms! Unless it has a unlocked bootloader. As of now theres no simple friendly way to do this anymore. Only solution is to have mobiletechvideos downgrade your chip and send it out to them for a service fee. There highly recommended on here for doing this. Hopefully a fix will be released soon as many people are working on this.
Good luck

You got the answers on rooting, I would just add that yes after a period of time of you denying the update it will just do it on its own. In the future root and freeze the update program. In this case SDM 1.0

XDA developer h311sdr0id made a post a while back to help out with rooting the sch-i605 on 4.3. You can find his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2608827
I'm still on 4.1.2, so I haven't had to use it yet, but this seems to be the method that a lot of other people are using to root their devices on 4.3.
Thanks to k1mu for posting the root method and h311sdr0id for pointing it out for the Note 2.
Good luck!
I successfully rooted using saferoot. So simple and easy just installed a zip on my computer and ran the bat file and that was it. You can Google it to find it. It took 2 minutes

I think I must have read too many threads and got confused.
After using Saferoot, I was able to root in less than 5 minutes.
The only problem now is that I have no idea why I want or need root at all. Are there any interesting apps that require root?

You can use titanium backup and restore apps. You can also download xposed framework and there are some random mods with that and you can also disable ads with ad blockers. Honestly that's pretty much all I use it for. I'm pretty upset this happened to me. In really hoping that the devs are continuing to work on safe strap for our phones so we can at least install other tw roms
