it depend on the custom rom you want to flash it is usually stated whether you can use any recovery or a certain one(xrecovery or cwm) in the requierement of the rom. so you won't be able to install certain rom unless you have xrecovery but then again that depend on the rom. so. which custom gingerbread rom do you want to use

Cool as in not overheating ???
a wipe and flash of stock rom will remove custom rom .
Root and custom roms void warranty and have a slight risk of bricking the phone .
But are usually recoverable .
You need to read the faqs and guides and understand the CM9 instuctions first .

to flash cynogen rom first u have 2 root ur phone please find the thread in original devlopment section regarding the same
u can reflash ur stock rom by dwnld the releavant .tar file adn flash the same thru odin
You can re-flash the stock rom, but just be sure to know which one is your stock rom. Go to settings, about phone and record the info there to be safe. Also back up your current rom using CWM.
There are always some risk in flashing a rom. Some people dont read instructions and cause problems on their phone, some people flash a rom not built for their phone (i9100 VS i9100G), etc.
Yeah i have rooted my device with cf-root. Thanks guys , i'll read some guides about cyanogenmod and flash it.
If your are currently on GB stock rom, Cyanogenmod developer recommends to install ICS bootloaded first,
You should be able to reflash your Stock ROM veriosn from ODIN, as well as custom roms from CWM...
What is bootload? o.o
My current firmware is ICS LP7

No they say to have below some specific ics boot loader, no mention of upgrading your gb boot loader, unless they changed it.
Plus I yet to had any issues with the latest ics or gb bootloaders..

I think he meant boot loader.
But since you already have ICS, you won't need it. Just take the latest CM9 nightly (or ROM based off it), and flash (you'll have to wipe cache data and dalvik too eventually). Make sure you make a full backup of your current stock ROM through CWM as well.

I refer this guide actually : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20841817&postcount=1
I dont know its outdated,
as others are sharing their experiance that you could flash CM9 straight away from your CWM since you are already on LP7 with ICS Bootloader.....
I don't get it... What is a bootloader?. I mean when i flashed with ICS LP7 i didn't put a file on bootloader. I just loaded the PDA .tar file and flashed it..
Soo that means that i have to reflash the stock rom with bootloader?

I dont know the ICS package you flashed had an ICS Bootloader already...
I just gave you the link for Original CM9 developers guide...
Just wait for others recommendation who have already flsahed CM9 from CWM....
Hmm thanks . But i have read in the guide that i can flash it with odin , do i still need the bootloader?

Just dwnld the 'Siyah kernel v4.1.5 or v5.0.1' (tar file for ODIN) and flash the same thro 'Odin' on ur pc.
It will automatically Root ur phone and install 'SuperSu' and latest CWM recovery for u.
then using the cwm recovery of siyah kernel u can flash any custom rom of ur choice.
after flashing the custom rom based on 4.1.2 u wont loose ur root
ps- once u install custom kernel like siyah ur phone will be safe from the 'Brick Bug' issue for sure
Flashed the Siyah Kernel.
About to flash custom rom
but got one finally question.
The custom rom; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498017
Says it has philz kernel or whatever
so can i still flash it? and does it change my kernel?
Does it have a effect on me?

Yes, u can flash it and the Kernel (philz) that comes with that rom will replace ur Siyah kernel for sure but u wont loose ur root
it will not have any effect on u though
do follow the install instruction for a successfull flash of the rom.
Cheers!!
Thanks, it works!!

Help needed--Custom ROMs, Bootloader??

hi everybody!
I need an help. Sorry for my bad english, I'm only 16 and I'm Italian.
I have an Xperia Mini, it's my first android phone, so I'm not very good at android modding! I downgraded it from ICS (Official) to Gingerbread (4.0.2.A.0.42 build) and I rooted it. Then I installed ClockWorkMod recovery. I don't have an unlocked bootloader, but I want to flash a custom ROM based on gingerbread. If I flash it, can I go back to stock rom with CWM's restore function? And If I can't, can I use flashtool to flash it (I have the .ftf file that I flashed for downgrading)?
Thanks very much.
Welcome to our forum
You can flash a gingerbread custom rom for locked bootloader with cwm, but be sure it is for locked bootloader!
If you take a backup in cwm, with backup/restore -> backup before you install the custom rom, you can restore this backup to go back to stock. Flashing the stock ftf will also work, you have to decide if you want to restore or flash, but if you take the backup in cwm it will backup the whole firmware with all apps etc :good:
Thanks! :good:
But do I need to flash a custom kernel? Or can I keep the stock kernel?

For locked bootloader custom roms it's the stock kernel :good:
For unlocked bootloader roms you need to flash a custom kernel, but this is only possible on unlocked bootloader

Normally it should work, but the problem is there's not specified if it is for locked or unlocked bootloader. It's stock based so it could work on locked, but it is recommend to flash a kernel. You could try it, but it could be you get a brick
When it's bricked, (mostly) you can't boot in recovery so you have to flash the stock rom with flashtool
Another little advice: If you install an ics custom rom on a gingerbread phone it could end in a brick. I had this when I was on locked bootloader, so I updated to ics (while keeping root, how to do this is in my rooting guide) and installed it again.
You can try an ics custom rom on your phone running gingerbread, just install it. But if it won't boot, flash the stock gingerbread rom and update it with root to ics
Ok. But before installing a rom, I have to do a full wipe, and wiping all will delete the CWM recovery?
I think I'll first upgrade to ICS officially. Can I use pc companion? or I have to flash the .ftf file of the stock 4.0.4 firmware with flashtool?

Read the instructions in the thread, generally you have to yes as it avoids any conflicts.

1.) make nandroid backup
2.) factory reset/wipe data
3.) wipe cache/partition
4.) format system
5.) wipe dalvik cache and battery stats.
6.) flash ROM
7.) flash supersu fix, there are lots of links out there just incase you have problems with root. this will solve your problem if u have locked BL
8.) if you lose CWM, you can use led deletes x-recovery tool to install cwm after you boot your rom
BUT TAKE NOTE THAT THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS YOU MUST DO IN "SOME" Custom ROMS like Hasa(flashing lockscreen after 1st boot)
MAKE SURE TO READ THE THREAD's INSTRUCTIONS FIRST
Ok i read all the guides...now I'll update to ics and root it. Then I'll install a custom rom.

and 4.1.2 is not ICS its JB
Since u tried cm, I am sure ur bootloader is unlocked.
So the easy way to root now would be to flash any custom kernel. It will be prerooted.
If you still want ti retain the rooted stock rom
Flash kernel and flash stock excluding kernel
Or flash stock and then flash kernel
Regards

Yes most (I believe all) custom kernels will have cwm ( or twrp,) so yes.
Try goin to dev section and find the list of kernels in stickies and find a jb kernel.

[Xperia U] Go back to Stock from CM9

So, I have my unlocked bootloader and CM9, I want to go back to the stock firmware and use a custom kernel, so.. for install the stock firmware, can I just flash the ftf via flashtools normally? or I will have any problem?
and for install the custom kernel I suppose that i only should install a recovery and flash it.... Am I right?
Thanks!

Yup that's about it.
And you flash custom kernel with fastboot, that will save you tha hassle of rooting and installing CWM recovery..

Can we use this method in xperia sola too? So we flash the stock firmware directly by using flashtool and then the kernel, and in any part of the process do we need to wipe anything at all?
Thanks in advance
