Flashing Question - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do I need to worry about how many times I flash my device? will it get bad or something like the motherboard go bad? I just got this phone used yesturday and want to know if i need to wory as this isnt a brand brand new ive already flashed it more than three times trying too chose the best rom and im kinda worried.

No need to worry, just make sure you wipe data and caches before installing a new rom. Let the phone sit for at least ten minutes after flashing too, then reboot. Just a heads up, stay away from ICS roms, they have the EU bug that renders your internal sd card useless.

What version is that I'm on PAC man and have been on cm10.1 and want to try 10.2 if this device sees an update

ICS is 4.0, jelly bean is 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3. I can't say which version that ROM is, been awhile since I've messed with ROMs. Go to settings then about phone and see what your firmware version is. If your on 4.0 then you should upgrade to jelly bean immediately, JB doesn't have the EU bug.

Upgrading to ics

Hi
Tried a quick search but got overwhelmed with the info
I've had my gs2 since launch and I rooted it and run check checkrom v6 at the moment. I want to upgrade to ics but unsure which way to go as there is a lot of conflicting info
Any advice would be appreciated

Do you want stock ICS or a custom rom ?

You just need to decide if you want a stock or a custom ROM.
As your running checkrom you're obviously not a stranger to flashing ROMs so just do a bit of research into some and flash.
Make a back using clockwork mod and if you want to go back to your old set up you can
A few custom ROMs to try are:
Ressurection Remix
Slim ICS
Elite Rom
Cyanogenmod 9
Will probably try cyanogenmod.
Is it pretty much just flash through cmw as before?

I would suggest rootbox. There is an ICS version and a JB, which is actually really stable
Thanks for the reply
This is where I got confused lol so is root box the new cwm? Or do I use cmw to flash root box then use root box to flash an ics rom?
I'm getting to old for all this

Rootbox is an version of ICS. You use cwm to flash Rootbox (an ics rom)

I would recommend flashing a stock ICS ROM first and from there on flashing the ROM you actually want.

Yes, that is all it is about. Make a nandroid backup first. Then wipe it clean, cache and data, and then flash whatever ROM you choose.
I can relate to your problem, s2 seriously has a lot of ROMs so try them and stick with that which YOU like personally. If you want you can try CM9 only first or any other. Just go to that ROM's thread and they mention how to flash in the OP.

Why? There's so many people like this on xda who say this, but when I asked the Devs, its not even necessary or doesn't help.
I never ever flashed an ics rom and I went straight from stock gb to custom ics without a problem.

I flashed the gb modem. Thing is. Kies is taking more than two hours to update to official ice cream sandwich. I have done this before and it took around an hour to complete. But I have had to do it again because I hard bricked my phone and had to wait 3 weeks to get it back to do it again. Not because I Tried to upgrade. But because I flashed a rom when the battery was real low. Thinking it had enough to flash one rom.

Just flash the original stock Rom via Odin in the PDA slot....
Back to stock. -minus the flash counter

are u trying to revert back to stop? cause u can go into the general tab, and then you can flash the stock kernal and then root the phone which is what i did, then, get odin 1.85 again from on of those selections, get touch based recovery, then flash the gb modem. then use kies

Help flashing Jellybam jb 4.2.1 status 7 error

Im using the Siyah-I777-v7.6.4-S kernal and did the norm whipe and all the cachs and such downloaded the rom 3-4 times on pc on phone directly and still get the error no matter what any help would be great thanks if you can tell me what kernel you are useing with this rom and were to get it thanks.
you have posted in the wrong section for one. to get rid of that error you need to odin back to stock and then root it and have cwm. then flash again. no other way of doing it. you could have asked in the jellybam thread. it has already been stated how to do it.

It's an error with the build prop. When I went from JellyBam to Avatar ROM I had the same issue. I fixed the build prop, and deleted the assert in the updater script

Wouldn't be, that kernel was made by AJ for Sammy JB ROMs.

so i can using the same kernel i installed get hte shosock rom to work but i can not get this one to work i even reinstalled the task650 aokp rom and then did the whip and all that and still can not this rom to install my problem and the reason im going from the task 650 rom to a different one is battery life with the task650 my battery would drop like a percent a min and was killing me i want to have a JB 4.2.1 rom would like the multi window option like shoshock rom but i love the aokp stuff so any other rom options with kernals would be wonderful or mods but currently im got the sohshock rom on it 4.2.1 NS WILL GIVE IT A TRY FOR A WILE AND SEE HOW THAT WORKS i dont think im going to stay with it thow cus there not that much to change to customize .

That is not correct. It is made for CM based ROMs and made to work on Samsung JB ROMs as a plus.
And this is in the wrong section.....please move this to the Q&A section.

Hi, if you are doing OTA it will be 4.2.2 or 4.2.3 at best, you will loose root, but not files or data.
Some apps may stop working or work differently, nothing to worry about.
Thanks and hows that? Major improvements? Something always weird with this one was the greenish tint when shooting with the flash... Is that fixed?
And there is a new chainfire's root out there i guess....
Thanks

Just want to say this isn't correct. Don't know if it's mistyped or something else, but it should be 4.1.2 'at best'.
Last official (thus OTA available) update for S2 will be 4.1.2. Sad as it is, for today's standards it is still acceptable.
what do you guys think about the 4.3 like sentinel rom?

Yes i was wrong, long time didn't have to use stock.
As for ROM selection, try PAC rom, (latest nightly 4.3.1) I am really happy with this rom as my dd.
thanks guys, I am about to upgrade, just a question, can I use the OTA update even if my phone is already rooted and I have Siyah kernel on? is it going to break or get stuck?

The OTA will probably fail.....the OTA package looks for a stock setup, and if you've modified that setup in any way (custom kernel) the OTA won't install.....even if it *didn't* fail, the kernel would be overwritten and you'd lose root.
If it were me, I'd make use of chainfires mobile odin, download a jb firmware from sammobile and update that way......

Did you enable the 'ever root' option in mobile Odin?
If not, you'll have to root the phone afterwards (if you want to)
A good place to start is the PhilZ kernel (rooted stock kernel + touch cwm)

Yeah....I guess that's 'project butter' or whatever it's called....it's supposed to give an overall smoother performance........
If you are going to stay with stock, my advice would be to 'de bloat' it.....I used Titanium Backup to freeze the bloat first, then delete it after I'd found out that it wasn't needed/critical for the phone to run.......
