I have been scouring these boards for hours and can't find my exact problem so I think I need to post this as a noob. I did Albert Wertz's method of rooting my Nook Tablet 16GB which he states will void the warranty. Afterwards I showed version 9.9.9 so I think it was rooted however I never saw superuser and such. I did something where the main menu bar no longer appears when pressing the n button too, annoying, I want it back too.
Anyway I booted into CWM from SD and then removed my boot SD and installed another SD with the img files on it. I have about 4 img files on it from throughout the day trying to update to CM7 and then tried a restore and just a CWM flash, every img file I select starts to perform it's update and somewhere around "extracting files" it says "installation aborted". At first I thought I had a bad memory card but both cards behave the same so I think they are good (creating 70MB partition on the CWM). I did a system restore on it and now it reports version 1.4.0 but I still get all the same errors, I'm stuck. I've spent about 9 hours of messing with this today and can’t think straight. I am going to bed and will try tomorrow, but if anyone could please tell me what I am missing I would very much appreciate it. Happy Easter ! Thanks, Mark O

In CWM, you need to install from .zip files. It sound like you're trying to install .img.
Thanks... I was installing .zip files, not .img. I was pretty useless last night. I used Alberts 4_5SD recovery this morn and got it rooted to 9.9.9 and I had superuser and titanium backup so all was good. I ran NWM from internal on the tablet and told it to install ROM from the SD card. I pointed to the file and told it to backup, then install the new ROM it said an error had occured when I tried this. I then booted from another SD card to go to CWM and after the white screen with the box, it went into backup and then restored the ROM, however it took me back to a unrooted version. It looked for the ROM I wanted to load but that was on the other SD card. Now I am back at square one, frustrated...
I think I might have found the problem but I am not sure. When I was doing the original CM7 update I wrote CWM to the E drive, (MyNook) so now the drive reports a total size of .99GB with 433MB free. So CWM is installed on this drive and I think that is the proplem. Is there a way to get CWM off the E drive? If I can just uninstall it, will that be sufficient enough to get the root back and then correctly install CM7? Thanks again in advance.

This time I am planning to download Indirect’s latest "NOOK Tab Recovery Flasher.apk" directly to my Nook Tablet, (at the inlaws now and no wifi

The steps that you have listed in this post are correct. If you do this exactly, everything should go according to plan.
Indirect's great app installs CWM to the recovery partition of your device, overwriting the B&N stock recovery. You can always go back to stock recovery if need be, though, so don't worry.

Having troubles with my GSII. Need to flash a new ROM but I don't want to lose all of my contacts, messages etc. so which ROM's won't wipe the data on the phone? Or will any ROM work once I don't wipe the data manually from CWM? I'm on an old build of a Gingerbread MIUI ROM, but would flashing an ICS ROM work fine?
Need to do something - it's the last straw before I bite the bullet and buy an iPhone 4S (saving myself €680 in the process).
Backing up in CWM shows "Error while generating MD5 sum!" when it's nearly complete, backing up to the internal SD card as when I try a normal one it comes up "Error while backing up boot image" straight away. Going out to buy a 4S at around lunch time if it doesn't work so I need help quickly.

it is very simple to backup your contacts/call logs/data/apps with MIUI backup, if you are moving MIUI to MIUI
it is strongly recommended to wipe your data before moving from GB to ICS.
I have solution for MD5 checksum error, if you need ask...

Well then I guess I'll flash a GB ROM so. What's the solution can I ask? I'm getting a continuous boot-loop, so unfortunately I cannot back-up via MIUI Backup.

What do you mean reverse? Back to stock? I would, but the computer I'm on doesn't have anything on it with relation to my SII.

MD5 checksum error of CWM of the MIUI roms is a known issue,
solutions are:
1) flash a siyah GB kernel from CWM and reboot to its CWM and make a back up,
by default backup will be stored to external SD, make space for atleas 1.5 gb (depends on your apps size, if only few apps 1 GB is enough)
if above also is giving same treble, use the second option which worked for me nicely..
2) Download ROM manager, falsh CWM version from thata, reboot recovery from Rom manager from there make a Backup..
CWM will not read the Backup from External SD by default move your backups to internel backup forlder of Clockworkmod.
then you dowload the latest GB version MIUI, either form XDA or from MIUI sites and flash from CWM, again flash Siyah

I can't actually get into the phone in any way so I guess I'll have to try the kernel. Will any version of the kernel work?

if you are on GB version try only GB version, any GB will do....

I'm fairly sure there's space on the phone. But I can't copy it over because it's saying there's zero space on the phone? As it's including the external SD card files in the total. :S

Please go and get out of my thread. Thanks. Mis-interpretation at its finest. If I wanted to just go ahead and buy the iPhone I would, but I don't. It's the last straw as everything else I've done has failed. You can't deny that they're the most reliable phone there is.
bootloop is the result of launcher & Themes, when I tryed to change themes I got FCs and bootloop on reboot, only worked was factory data reset and flash the same ROM zip from CWM...
but you are concerened about your apps & data, by flashing the siyah I dont think resolve bootloop issue but you may be able to make a back up from its Recovery...
since you have no access to interal SD now, copy to external SD and select kernel zip from install zip from external SD card. i hope it will work..
otherwise you will have to flash Tar version of the Siyah kernel form ODIN in download mod

Thanks. Yes. I hope to just backup with Siyah. I'm currently transferring all 19GB's worth of data on my SD card to my computer in hopes that it will show up with space in Finder. This will take a while.

Also I do have access to it. But only through "external SD" in the internal files.
I don't have an SD card adapter so I can't use that.

Quite a lot. Maybe it came across as a little rude, but there's no denying that iPhone's are the most reliable smart phone on the market. Most Android phones need you to root/flash to get the most out the system, with iPhone's this isn't the case. I know they're not the best phone on the market, which doesn't delight me but I'm contempt owning one. Knowing that something is not likely to go wrong - leaving me without any of my precious data.
With my SII all that happened was the phone died, and then all of a sudden it started boot-looping, after working fine for about a month (had a similar problem before).
Not happy about being trapped into Apple's eco-system, but if that's what it takes to have a reliable phone with superb battery life then that's what I'm going to do. And once there is a jailbreak for the 4S on 5.1 I'll be doing it ASAP.
Anyway; flashed that kernel to my phone. Worked a treat, and the whole back-up was successful (changed my CWM to a touch version too lol). Thanks a lot ZACQ8.
Here's hoping that flashing a new ROM will work smoothly. If so I'm going to sell it, get the $$$, bring the 4S back (I've got 14 day cooling off period) and try out the One X.
I know I should really just be searching but I doubt I'll find a specific answer so... does anyone have suggestions for a reliable ROM?

Quite a generic name for a piece of software, and does it work without actually needing access to the phone in an 'off' state? As still getting boot-loop meaning I've no chance of getting into the phone.
I expect it to not work very nicely with Mac OSX though. Really sounding like an Apple fanboy, eh?
Also, the ROM I'm looking for (quite specific) has to be 2.3 and a non-wipe ROM. Currently downloading 'XWLA4 by TugaPower'. The non-wipe version, let's hope.
Successfully flashed that ROM, getting FC's when trying to enter my contacts. So then went into CWM, tried to restore my old backup but it's saying: "MD5 mismatch!"
How exactly do I fix this to be able to flash my backup of my previous ROM?

I installed cyanogenmod 9 on my gt-i9300, the installation went smooth, but then I had the great idea to install the Ninphetamin3 kernel as well, it turns out that they are not compatible with one another(or I did something wrong), now the phone starts up and keeps looping at the cm9 boot animation. I have no back ups on the internal sd card as I did these two actions at the same time, and the phone cannot read my original stock rom.
I might have accidentally deleted them in my haste(tried following a youtube fix that did not work9
question…..Can I put the cm9 rom and gapps on a micro sd, then plug it back into the phone and reinstall it this way?
btw this is my first android mobile, and I am using an osx system to root and any information on how to fix this problem via an osx system will be greatly appreciated.

Did you try wiping cache and dalvik cache?
99% of the time, wiping cache and dalvik cache will solve your bootloop problems and force closes.

Yepp I tried all of those, still no luck, will try with the micro sd later about 2am here in sthlm and I need some sleep before the old job...

Ninphetamine kernel is a Samsung kernel, it is not compatible with CM9.
Why don't you just reinstall CM9?

That is what I would like to do, but I flashed cm9 with rom manager, and since my phone is stuck looping and the boot animation I cannot reco it from there. I tried doing it from clockworkmod recovery and cannot find the rom in the file system either....so my plan is to pop a micro sd into my computer transfer the files onto that, then pop it into the phone again and attempt to do it this way... Hopefully it can be done.
Download original firmware and flash with odin. Start over.

I transfered the cm9 and gapps onto my ext sd card using a laptop, then back into the phone. I reflashed and basically I have a phone that I can use again..
One more thing I noticed since reinstalling the cm9 rom
I got everything back but when I go to the play store on my computer it no longer recognizes my mobile, but
if I access it through my mobile it does is there any explanation for this?
Not a big deal but it would be nice to reinstall apps and some paid apps again without having to pay for them again..
any ideas?
Perhaps something to do with the baseband on cm9?

You could save these paid for apps on a Samsung phone .

okey, I just found it a bit strange that I can still download most of the paid apps from the play store via the phone and not the computer.
Does that mean if I restore the stock rom(no intention) that the store would recognize the phone again?
Just use your computer and flash stock rom to your GS3, that's how i solved similar problem with GS2 when it was looping.
Odin is fairly easy to use, tons of instructions online, finding right stockrom online might be time consuming.
Backup your phone ALWAYS! With cwm, i have big list of backups always ready, everytime you messing with new roms, kernels or what ever changes you make, it's worth the time, trust me.

Use galaxy s3 toolkit to backup your firmware to pc,look in development section.
And ALWAYS backup your imei nr(EFS folder) use K-TOOL from market(free) or EFS pro(pc)
I hope I am in the right forum for this thread. I have plenty of questions and hope to get answers to a few..... Here goes -
A few weeks ago I bought a nook 16Gb Tablet essentially for my wife and created a CM7 SD card to allow using it in stock BN system as well as experiment with Android use from that card. The end result is I decided I needed one for myself so I wouldn't conflict with her use. I had months ago rooted my nook eink but regardless of its expanded capability it was still only a great ebook reader and hopeless as a web browser, etc. So bought a Certified Preowned 16Gb nook Tablet for myself and duplicated the CM7 SD card process and was able to switch between stock nook use and Andorid use from the SD card using the dual boot process. I found myself mostly in the Andorid side and began to wonder why I was keeping the unused nook side around. After a ton of forum reading I decided to root my tablet and leave my wife's in its dual boot format - undoubtedly a safe move....

and I followed the detailed steps and links from "liquidzoo" post #240. Creating the SD card for the rooting process was easy. It went well up to the point of the step of powering up after inserting the SD card in the powered down nook. It kept booting into the stock BN nook side by use of the power on button. It began booting to the SD card only after I allowed it to power up by plugging it into my pc with the usb cord. Then the following steps went fine after I discoverd I had to use the volume controls to step through the menu selections. Thereafter it did go smoothly through the process. When the process indicated it had completed powered off, removed the SD card, and powered up into Android.
It seems to be somewhat faster than using Android from a dual boot (CM7 on SD card). Aside from experimentation, is there any way of finding out what all the icons in the status bar are for on the vbarious screens? Some are obvious but at one point I had a flashing-inverted-chevron icon that seemed to be maybe a downloading indicator but I couldn't find what.
Is there a simple toggle to switch from nook to android screens? Seems to be several taps to achieve that.
How do I install the Amazon Android App? I can' seem to find it.
I'll probably reply to this with other questions after I do more experimenting but answers to these woiuld be helpful.

and I followed the detailed steps and links from "liquidzoo" post #240. Creating the SD card for the rooting process was easy. It went well up to the point of the step of powering up after inserting the SD card in the powered down nook. It kept booting into the stock BN nook side by use of the power on button. It began booting to the SD card only after I allowed it to power up by plugging it into my pc with the usb cord. Then the following steps went fine after I discoverd I had to use the volume controls to step through the menu selections. Thereafter it did go smoothly through the process. When the process indicated it had completed powered off, removed the SD card, and powered up into Android.
It seems to be somewhat faster than using Android from a dual boot (CM7 on SD card). First, read this.
Now, just so we're on the same page.
You created an sd card that allowed you to boot into a custom recovery and then using the volume up/down buttons, navigated to install and installed a zip file that allowed you to root the device correct?
If that is the case, you are still on the stock OS (as it sounds from your description). This is why you have both the stock B&N user interface (launcher) and a custom one (the one that looks more like cm7 did when booting from an sdcard).
Still have that custom recovery card? Here's my suggestion. Download a custom rom like cm7 and the appropriate gapps file (google apps, including the play store). Store these files on your internal storage. Next, boot back into the custom recovery and create a backup. Then, just as you did before, navigate to installing a zip and find the cm7 zip file you found before. Install the gapps zip file as well. When you're done, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. DO NOT FORMAT SYSTEM OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT (people do this for some reason, I don't understand why and it breaks things - don't do it.) Upon rebooting, you will no longer have the stock OS installed You will have a custom rom, cm7 installed.
The difference from your current setup is that right now, the core of the device is still based on B&N version of Android. The alternate user interface is nothing more than a tease of what Android is truly capable of. A custom rom opens up many more doors and should be a much smoother experience.

First, I did grab your first linked post and realized some misconceptions. I still need to digest it more thoroughly, though.
On the part of your response that I have edited out in the qoute, I also want to read more troroughly and pose some questions in a later response.
As for the final suggestion, I have been eyeing the Nexus 7 for some time ane even though it is a bit more expensive than the nook Tablet I currently own I think I might get it (or a similar device) when fortune and convenience presents itself. For now, I am still in a learning mode with the Android-like device I currentlhy have and need to read and educate myself further. As stated in my opening post - I am a noob - there is a lot of experimenting I need to do.
I will be replying with some questions after more reading and thought on your offered suggestions in the section I edited out for the time being.....

Thanks again for giving me something to think about.
I have read/reread both of your linked posts and your complete response to my post. Further, it is useful to comment that with my nook Tablet hardware it is not at all important for me to have the BN OS. I have a classic nook eink that is totally satisfactory for anything I may need for BN usage alone - mostly, ebook purchase and reading. I purchased the tablet as a means to get access to Android applications not possible from the nook classic which was also hopeless as a general web access device. As a rooted Android device, I anticipate it's nook app to be satisfactory as an ebook reader as well.

That .img file is what you used to create the sdcard your wife and you used. Just as with the recovery sd card, you take said .img file and burn it to it to create a "bootable" sdcard. Thats not what we want to do now (if you're ready to replace the stock OS). Go to this thread for cm7. See where it says "Internal version 8GB & 16GB Compatiable?" Grab that. That is the rom zip file itself. To get gapps, youll need cm7 compatible gapps, found here.

By internal storage, I'm referring to the internal storage on the Nook itself. (like what you see when you mount it via USB on your computer). It should come up as "My Nook" or something to that effect. If you store the rom zip file here, you will be able to boot into recovery via the sdcard you created, navigate to the internal storage and find the zip file and install it. Now personally, I would recommend, that if you plan on using internal roms, that you should also change the internal recovery to a custom one. With an internal custom recovery, you could swap between various roms without ever needing to use that recovery sd card. You would simply boot into recovery, grab the zip file for whatever custom rom you want to use and install it.
The easiest way to get a custom recovery is via this app here. Simply install the app and flash the custom recovery within it. Its also a great tool to return to stock recovery should you ever need to.

Its in the recovery menu there right at the front. You should see something like reboot system, apply sdcard, wipedata/factory reset, wipe cache, install zip, backup and restore. Backup/restore to backup your current installation, install zip to install the rom + gapps, and wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache after installation.

Albert Wertz's youtube video throws a lot of stuff into the process which looks very interesting but I think I'll "crawl" around a bit and use recovery card for little longer while I become more familiar with a rooted tablet.
I grabbed the CM7 and gapp zips you pointed to and I'm going to give that a whirl with my current recovery card and post back with results - hopefully good......
Note that if you install cm7 to the device, you are not simply on a "rooted" tablet anymore. You will be on a custom rom that also happens to have root access (most custom roms do). Its also worth noting that cm7 is a custom rom based on Android 2.3.4, so the roms capabilities and limitations will be subsequently limited to what cm7 is capable of. The latest version of Android is 4.1 and we are lucky enough to have a custom rom (cm10) in development based on it.

undeeded apps
Been doing some exploring and contemplating addition of a few apps. However, some of the apps loaded with CM7 and Gapps (like car home, phone, camera to name a few) don't make sense on a nook tablet - unless I'm missing a reason they should be there. What is the best way of uninstalling/deleting these or any I may install but discover no need for?

They're there because cm7 is a port of a phone based OS (Android 2.3 was designed for phones). You can disable them but I believe camera is tied to gallery so that could screw up picture viewing and phone might be tied to contacts so that could screw up your contacts database if you use gmail. If you have a file explorer that has root access (I use root explorer, paid app in play store), you can navigate to /system/apps and all the apks for those apps (system apps) are found there. You can add a ".bak" extension to each one, then reboot and see if anything breaks. If for some reason things break really badly, you can always reboot to recovery and just flash the rom on top of it again.

Could someone please point me in the right direction for where to get started? Is the SD card method the best? What launcher should I choose? I'll continue searching the forums but any help is greatly appreciated.

CM10+ is your best bet. It's based on Jelly Bean. Pretty stable also. CM10 released a stable version on 12/31 and CM10.1 is almost to it's stable release (RC4 was just released.)
The succulent versions are my favorite. Go to http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/ and check out some of the posts. Find something you like. If you need help just let me know.

Thanks to the both of you. Data, in my own research I have found the Succulent versions of which you speak. So far I've been following this guide here, but I've run into a pretty big issue. The images that I'm trying to download are hosted on this goo.im site, and I'm having numerous problems trying to download from there. If I can get the download to work, it slows to a crawl then ultimately stops. Any browser I use fails with this.
I'm still searching, however do you know of any other mirrors I would be able to download the releases?
Also, the Nook was already previously rooted. Do I need to update CWM or the root to be able to use CM10? And if so, how?

I managed to download the files that were necessary and got it running. The only problem I'm having now is the sluggishness that is being caused by CM10.1. Waiting to see if this is fixed via a reboot, but it's even taking a little while just to open the book on the Nook. I don't know if this is due to having previous files on the nook or anything. I need to start looking into ways to completely restore the Nook to factory condition and work at it from there as well. Even after the reboot just bringing the Nook out of lock can take awhile.
Also it appears some report that this can be untethered... and some report that they always have to reboot with power plug to get it to load CM10.1. Has anyone been able to force the issue one way or the other? Any idea why some have success and some don't? As always I'll continue searching, but if you get to the answers before I do I would appreciate it.

If you're running CM internally on EMMC I'd suggest you wipe /data (which will entail reloading your apps from Google Play) and /cache; if you're running CM off SD card you'd need to wipe the /data partition on the SD card (aka /data1 if you're using CWM version compiled by Succulent).

Digi I believe it's off of the SDCard. When I boot the Nook w/o power or SDCard it loads Nook software + root. I went ahead and formatted the data partition as well as the system partition (for some reason in my partition manager it was listed as EXT3)... got everything squared away. The OS part of it seems to be running a bit better right now... Loading a book in the Nook app still takes forever but I'm beginning to think that's because it's Game of Thrones, and it merged 4 books into one so it's like 3500 pages. It takes between 45-60 seconds to load each time I go in.

You might want to take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633 which discusses comparative performance of different brands and classes of SDcard for the purpose of running ROM.
CM10.1 is a speed demon on my mom's NT. I've never ran on anything but emmc, however.
