[Q] 24-25% battery use per HR of screen time. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Would that be normal on this phone?
Display mode set to professional and auto brightness.

I am seeing on average about 20% per hour of screen on but there is a lot of impact depending on what you are doing.
For example texting takes very little cpu but gaming could be a lot more.

You're right I should have been more clear - No gaming or large video, mostly texting, browsing and FB.

Are you on wifi or 4g? How strong is your 4g signal.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

Regardless of a perfect 4g signal or wifi, I seem to lose around 20-25% battery per hour of screen use.

My screen has been on 30 minutes and dropped 3%

What are your display settings?

Full brightness. I set the time out for 30 minutes and just let it shine.

Hmmm...
Well I noticed if I play a youtube video (a movie) it uses far less than general browsing, Facebook, usage. My only thoughts are that movies tend to have more black in them and we all know that AMOLED screens don't consume battery when displaying black pixels.
By chance do you have a dark theme or were you watching darker youtube video for 30 minutes?

No. I wasn't using the phone. I just left the screen on for 30 minutes to see how fast the screen drains. I was surprised at how slowly it drained.
This is the screen.

Downloading a torrent kills my battery, makes me want to just tether to a different device and torrent off that

just a question, not meaning to sound smart or anything but why would you torrent with phone out and about? Why not just torrent when near an outlet to plug in like at work or home? I wouldn't want to kill my battery for something like torrenting unless i HAD to have something RIGHT THEN.

sensor used by android process 100% of time, even in sleep state

When I go to spare parts --> sensor usage, I notice that there is some sensor being used 100% of the time that the phone is on. What is this sensor? (Captivate never had a sensor being used all the time phone was on, even in sleep mode.)
I think this sensor is causing an unnecessary drain on the battery?
Could anyone who deleted moto blur/moto apps check n see if this sensor usage is present on their phones too.
Could anyone who does not use finger print security check their sensor usage under android?
Edit: Nvm, it still uses that sensor at over 98%.
It could be the service that handles all sensors, or it could be the light sensor, some kind of touchscreen sensor, etc...
Who cares. It likely uses virtually no battery.

It should be using. Cos phone usage of battery is on the high side. Plus overnight, it fell from 100 to 80.

The first day I found it was google voice. So this time I killed it manually, and took off auto sync. This time when I went to spare parts, the time taken by gvoice was very less to what was used by "phone".

This. I spent an hour and change playing Dungeon Defenders (one of the most demanding games in the Market, and specially designed for Tegra 2) and only lost about 18% battery. Did this twice just to be sure.

Not worried abt battery usage while playing, or doing anything. I am only trying to find out the about the high idle drain when phone is not in use -- sleeping state. Like the thread title says, all this is about some sensor used by android process 100% of time, even in sleep state.

Poor battery life?

Anyone else getting poor battery life with their Razr? I cannot go a full day without recharging at some point. I need a phone to last at least 16 waking hours, so I can recharge at night.
My typical usage pattern is a few hours a day of web browsing and email. I don't game, and I rarely stream video or do anything data intensive. GPS is switched off unless needed, and my screen brightness is set to auto.

Also, don't use auto brightness. Just set to a mid setting.

I'm actually getting pretty good battery life compared to what I've read so far... Though it wasn't 16 hours, I DID get almost 12 out of it yesterday with pretty heavy usage all day.
I highly suggest using the task managers auto end feature. It'll turn off any apps you set it to after 2 minutes. Fast Reboot is also a very good friend of mine. Though I haven't set any yet, I've played with Smart Actions, and I think with some tinkering, it'll work wonders as well!

JuiceDefender with root, AOSP helper, and a manual setup is extremely helpful. The data disable override feature should be on as well.
Make sure in-pocket detection is OFF, as well. It kills the battery really really quickly.
As far as smart actions.... Just turn on the premade battery extender and nighttime battery extender. And data off on screen off.
Lastly, screen filter from the market helps a lot.
I got a full day and 2 hours of use today on Wi-Fi. I'm sure on 3G I could get 20ish hours, and on 4G I could get 15ish.
Mine is great. I got my phone yesterday so it isn't fully calibrated yet but it still last very good.
I've found that the the biggest drainer for me is being in an area where 4g/3g is flip flopping alot. Other than that, phones got amazing battery life. Especially on wifi.

Ya, idunno about that....
What has always worked for me is to use an app called brightness profiles. My phone lives at 30% brightness 95% of the time. The RAZR has a super bright screen, 30 is plenty.

my gf just got her razr a week ago and says with regular usage she gets about 4 hours of battery life. thinking about returning it for a different phone or maybe she got a dud? she doesn't want it rooted so I did everything else mentioned. if there are more tips I'd love to hear them before the phone goes away for good.
Turn all haptic(vibration) feedback off. i get about 20 hours on 4g, all apps in auto end list, i don't have any BS apps that like to run randomly, not synced with my fb,twitter, g+(have my laptop all day so no point), brightness is about 30%, smart actions usually kill my batt faster for some reason, gps is on, timeout is 30 seconds. I text a lot, and about 2hours of phone calls perday

She still has better battery life when for me I did a few txt. Check fb on my lunch break and I'm down to 20% by days end. Whereas my gf surfs, txt, stream, chat half the day and she's down to 60%. Only difference between mine and hers. Mine is rooted. Mind you she has her 4g data on while all day I'm running only 3g. Any more help would be appreciated

Put the power control widget on your home screen.
Set brightness to minimum or lowest setting that you can use well.
Use wifi whenever possible. Turn. Off new network notifications.
Turn off animations.
Use a simple, mostly black wallpaper.
Turn off auto data sync.
Since I'm around wifi all day I can easily go 12 hours without a charge and have plenty of battery left. 4g is a total power hog.
If you're outside you might want to buy the power pack... good luck!
I think typical android battery life for a normal use will be varies from 6~20 hrs depending on the way u use and what you use.
when running only data/wifi when i need it(off data/wifi when not using), i can get more then 20hrs. if i on data all the time, i can get 8~10hrs with with some facebook, emails and lite web sufing. i will get 4~6 hrs on heavy use on gaming, video and music.
but u need smart action, task killer and ti backup to really optimize the battery life.

yeah.
battery life is a hard problem for android device for a long time.
but i can use some trips, for example.
1. using the task managers, it can kill some app that you used.
2. using the app called province electricity king or the same function app.
3. turn off the back-data auto sync

My Razr has a very good battery life after a few cycles of charging and discharging.

How I got more than 2 days from 1 charge

Phone now on %10 after 2days 10Hrs
Usage -
calls - 1Hr
Angry Birds - 1Hr Aprox
HD playback - 40Mins
HD recording - 5mins
Alarms - 30mins
Music - 10mins
Wifi - 10mins (for updates and app install)
Connected to TV - 10mins
40 Photos taken
and some other day to day things like looking at pictures and using apps.
Changed to GSM only data only on for Facebook updates
With the same usage as above before removing Drop-box,changing screen brightness and GSM only, i was getting less than a days use before recharge needed.
I think the biggest battery sucker is the screen, my brightness is set to about %25
Running services and other stats shown in screen-shots.

Switching off data, or to only GSM really defeats the purpose of having a smartphone... It's well known the main battery drain is data connection and phones searching for better reception (i.e. between GSM + 3G). Using WiFi over 3g and even switching to GSM only when using wifi is beneficial but having to manually do this all the time takes the smart out of it.
Nothing new here to be honest.
I Agree, used to switch data transfer always off and on, but found out its a way more handy to keep it always on. If there was a function that will automatically switch 3g data on when you need it and then turning it off would be awesome...

Clock Widget is from Beautiful widgets,
As for Data, I had it off on other tests and the battery lasted less than 17Hrs,
So its not the main problem i was having, i would say its the screen brightness and the running programs/widgets
however, i will now do the same test but with data always on and see what the score is.
i used to be like you, gsm n low brihtness, etc. but then i changed it to using my phone to its max potential (e.g. anti-theft programs will be rendered useless if ur using 2g mode/data turned off while screen off profiles, whatsapp can only get msgs every intervals of 30 mins e.g.)
with 3g and wifi turned on 24/7 using net most of the time i get about 16 hours which is just perfect, ( and 8 hours sleep), unless im going to go for flights (then i just bring my power bank, prob solved!)

Wakelocks

Can anyone help diagnose my problem? I believe it's maps, but I have no way of being sure. Any how, if someone could me what's up that'd be great. I'm on Snuzzo's 1.8 sense kernel set on Wheatley: 11800 max and 384 min. I shouldn't have lost 13 percent in 3 hours.

considering our screens suck up juice 13% for 3 hours isn't bad period. lots of users can't even get past 4 hours of on-screen time with a standard battery. from looking at the partial wakelocks that maps is definitely a culprit. checking apps running in the foreground in the management area helps to.

I get maybe 1 hour of screen on time on a full charge, right now I'm at 55% with 29 minutes of screen on time. I can literally watch my battery decrease at least 1% per minute that I am doing anything with my phone.

finally if you have the facebook app installed, uninstall it ans wipe cache and delvik. fb was waking my device over 700 times a day killing my battery and robing resources making my phone slow. gsam will tell you what it is for sure. try it.

Yup. AFAIK the free version doesn't allow this, but you should buy the pro key anyway so that Titanium Backup continues to be supported and gets better and better. With the pro key, you can back up SMS and MMS.
well your bbs log shows you had no signal for the entire up time basically. and your wifi was only on for about half that time. if your phone is having to search for signal, battery drain is going to happen. if you're in a poor lte coverage area, switch to 3g only.

Faulty phone, or some weird app issue, i would factory reset and play around without installing anything. If you still get those numbers, get a new one.
This is the only phone I've ever owned that easily lasts all weekend.
Im at 15 hrs with 2hrs screen and 46 percent left. I drive all day and play music via Bluetooth and it was sunny today so screen was at 80 brighteness.
Get a wakelock app and see if something is draining your battery

Screen time is not absolute. Playing games for 3h or watching movies for 3h is comparable to reading a book for 10h, because of a thing called GRAM. Don't let those stats fool you.

Exactly! With RR3 i get 3hrs and a little more. Browsing 7hrs. It depends what are you doing.
My Experience:
1. Greenify
2. Clear RAM (Widget LG)
3. Use Wifi, limiting open 4G data
4. Screen Brightness 50%
But these things only improve a small part. Encourage use a ROM MOD :good:
I'm running cm 10.2 and got 4 hours screen on, 9 1/2 hours up with wifi on all day, got home with 49% battery left. I use greenify and wakelock detector. Maybe run a custom ROM. I prob couldve got 5 maybe 6 hours screen on.

There are alot of apps that are constantly pinging the network that could be causing the extra battery draw
I.E Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, dating apps, Hangouts, Skype, Drive, Box, Dropbox and any other messaging apps that go outside of basic text messaging through the carrier
Edit: Or Tapatalk...i just noticed your using that. Gonna check in every so often for new messages.......I bet you just have a TON of apps running in the background....

Oh, and for the Sprint variant, i disabled/froze some LG apps, Sprint apps, and 'VuTalk". Boosted my battery life like crazy....
As long as you have a constant cell signal I think the battery life is great. With my T-Mobile version I don't get nearly as good signal on the days that I work because the phone is using Wifi Calling for the cellular signal. On weekends when I have full strength signal I easily get the high screen on times.
Did a factory reset now actually. Lets see if this fixes anything

Auto brightness, change your mobile network to 2G when you're not using data, go to settings > WiFi > advanced and make the WiFi always on *only when it's plugged in* and turn the always scanning option off, go to your Google account in the settings and turn off sync for anything that doesn't need to sync, make sure NFC is disabled, increase the refresh time on any of your social apps, and enjoy your battery.
