I wear carpenter jeans because I can't stand a cell phone holster. Only problem with this S4 is I put phone upside down in the pocket. When I go to get phone from pocket my thumb lands on the HOME button and turns display on. Kind of annoying. Is there any way to turn that off and just use the power button on the side?

I'm new to the Galaxy S4 and got stuck with vruame7 so I can't install a custom rom yet.
You can edit /system/usr/keylayout/gpio_keys.kl to erase the WAKE after home
Original: "172 HOME WAKE"
Change it to: "172 HOME"
If that doesnt solve your problem try adding WAKE back and adding dropped as such: "172 HOME WAKE_DROPPED"

I de-rooted yesterday (Froyo!) for the first time and out of principle want to see how long I can go. One of the only thing that I missed at the moment was screen captures that I need for the small amount of apps I have developed or plan on developing.
I wasn't aware of this ability in the SDK. That makes sense now.
I accidentally did a screen capture today...the phone was on the car charger and I was trying to turn the screen off, I pushed the power button and heard the shutter sound. May be a glitch of somekind
Btw, I am not rooted

Long pressing the power will do a hard reboot, used if phone were to become froze and unresponsive.I can't answer your question on how you would change that function.

I guess I mean medium press? The one that brings up the menu of what you'd like to do, shutdown shutdown and restart, etc. Well before it just shuts off from holding it down.
Works perfectly!

You know, like on all the aosp and cyanogen ROM's. Push the power button and you get the option to boot to recovery, download mode, restart, shut off, etc...

I have been using this app for almost 2 years. Grab the app "Swipepad" and its probably the quickest way to reboot or boot to recovery

Would be quite unlikely to hardbrick from recovery flash, especiallybif you flash right stuff for S3....can you get to download mode, even if you cannot, try download mode combo and plug phone to odin, does it wreckingnize it? Does phone show something (galaxy s3 bootscreen) or screen stays compleetely black?

Screen is completely black and will not start using (Volume - + Home Button + On/Off), does not appear on my computer when connected, does not appear on Odin.

A usb jig will help you if you can get your hands on one.

I live in a rural area and I dont know what a usb jig is or how its used.
This phone cost more than the moon and the stars!!!! How am i ever going to fix this!!!!????
Have you tried taking the battery out and putting it back in? I had a similar issue with my note 2. I flash something and it was just a black screen. Power button, home button, and volume button did nothing for me. I took out the battery and put it back in and I saw the samsung splash screen and went back to the black screen. So I had to take the battery out, hold down the volume, home, and power button and push the battery in. It was a pain to do. Having a second person may make it easier. But give that a go.

You must be deodexed for this to work and on the most current ROM which is "AMDL" I suggest using Nottach's PRom found here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258904
I have personally tested this on 3 different units all running the PRom with no issues at all...
If you are running a Rogers device and want this then PM me a copy of your deodexed android.policy.jar file and I will take a look at it. I only need one so I will delete this once I receive it....
Here is a quick mod I put together....It will give you the long menu press to kill feature as well as the extended reboot menu. You must have CWM or TWRP in order to install..Just go to recovery and install the zip...
Based on feedback below this mod doesn't seem to work with Rogers.. I will look into it and see what's up.
Flash at your own risk....
This has been tested on an att S4 with twrp/loki...
I also found this which works for increasing your volume..Just install the zip from recovery..this really increases the volume may be to loud for some..

Will this work on ATT version with TWRP that is using the Loki bootloader bypass?

That's what I'm on so you shouldn't have any issues..
For the rest that this is not working for it may be because you are not on att... All this is is a simple mod to the android policy jar file... I will look at it later to see what's up...

Not working for me,
Rogers 1337m with TWRP
Also flashed the volume thing, worked fine all night but decided it was a tad too loud and flashed the revert back to stock settings. Phone in a boot loop.
Had to restore from a backup
Flashed it this am, but I don't see any change. I'm on ATT with TWRP.

So if you open an app and once opened you hold the menu button down the app should close and a little message is displayed saying killed:appname.
If you press the power button to turnoff or restart phone and you hit restart a new menu should pop up..this doesnt happen either????
are you odex or deodex??

Anyways you can add a Version that just had the four way reboot and not the long press menu? Or even better make long press back button to kill app rather than menu. I used long press menu for search alot
Works great for me. Thanks for a great mod. :good:
I am on AT&T odex'd with CWM auto loki.. Gonna flash again after back up! Really just want for reboot but kill button would be nice too. Also gonna try manually replacing policy.jar file.. Will update with results.
*UPDATE*
So manually replace policy file had no affect either. Well keep testing and report back.

Go to settings/device/display if your screen timeout is set correctly i.e. 2 minutes etc. check reading mode make sure it is turned off as well.
