Hi, although I've been reading around the forums for like a year now, this is my first post.
----------Story:
Recently (about a month ago) I started to notice a dark smudge on my phone's display. Its very light and hard to see, but when I notice it (often) its very bothersome. Its like half an inch from the right, right in the middle. I googled about it for a while, and apparently it has to do with the amount of pressure applied to the glass. This was hard to believe to me, because I take care of my phone like if it was a baby.
Anyways, being bummed about it. I move on living. And just in my daily phone use, i decide to take off the battery cover for a reason I can't remember, I did this with the display on, and I noticed that while I was lifting the battery cover, the smudge area of the display started to glow in colors, like when you apply too much pressure on the glass. And this got me curious. I started pressing different parts of the phone, and noticed that the smudge area goes crazy when i press right under the capacitive buttons. And the plastic frame on said area. After this I did bought the story about the display being damaged by too much pressure. Anyways, everything changed just a few minutes ago.
I was trying to free up the most RAM possible, so, looking around on the settings, i got into developer options and accidentally got curious and messed with something that froze the phone. I decide to take out the battery, and I find myself again with the battery sorta.. Sticking out a little, like when you lift the battery to take it off but not completely. This is something I had noticed months ago, maybe last April or May. Well since it really bothered me because the battery just wouldnt go all the way in, i decide to inspect it. And note that i have done that before, the first time i tought that it was normal, the second time i tought that it was the shape of the phone. But today it hit me. Thats not normal! The battery is bigger. Like, right in the middle, the battery has a litte bump on both sides, like when you bake a cake and it grows, well, a bump just like that. But its hard to seem really hard to see. But somehow I could feel it in the hand, and I decided to put it on a flat surface and it is indeed true. The 4 corners don't touch the surface at the same time, not even pushing it down. And I remember it used to back when I bought the phone a year ago.
And that's not all, the worse part is, that I realized that the bump of the battery aligns perfectly with the smudge on the display. So it must be it!! The battery applied pressure from underneath, causing the display to touch the glass. And as i checked around the phone, turns out that the glass is slighly getting detached from the lower area (battery area).
Maybe it wasn't my fault, but I feel so guilty for not noticing earlier. I'm really worried, as I have very poor battery life, and I fear the display getting damaged even further. Oh, and also. I noticed that all the issues I saw on Google about the smudge on the display, are in the middle, half an inch from the bottom just like mine. What if its the same battery problem?

I was really paranoic the moment I realized that the battery was messing up the display. So I rushed here looking for help. Thanks in advance.
My device is an HTC EVO 3D, (VM), Running CM 10.1 WFTN, and the battery is stock.
I Think You have to go to the Maintenance .. Since Its Not A Software Problem the phone should be taken to a technician .

You should replace the battery before it cause any more problems.
this kind of stuff usually happens then the batteries are overheated or overcharged multiple times. do you leave the phone charging overnight? or maybe using a cover which acts as insulation.

Yes. I have my charger plugged almost 24/7 because of the poor battery life, and I let it overnight all the time. And yeah the phone gets very hot when I use tethering or any graphic intensive game for a long time. (Which is often). I think I overuse this phone.
And the cover is just a Trident Perseus (siliccone).
Anyways, i will replace the battery soon, since i found that with the battery cover removed, the smudge goes away. i assume that the battery being forced in by the back cover, causes the battery to apply pressure to the display from the inside, making it touch the glass which causes the smudge. For now i will use my phone with the back cover a little open on the bottom so the battery doesnt get pressed in. While i get myself some replacement batteries. As soon as i get the battery replacement ill say how it goes. I needed the raplacement anyways. I only get up to 6 hours of battery life, and thats changing the governor to powersave. Which is obviosly not good. I guess the battery just went bad.
silicone covers a bad particularly if you have heavy usage. I would recommend you always remove the cover when you play heavy games or use tethering
thanks for letting me know. i'll remove it when necessary. or maybe ill just get a non-silicone case. hopefully all this will increase the life-span of my next battery.

Haven't seen too many others comment about this, but I just thought I would share. After upgrading to a Seidio 1900mAh battery, my Evo 3D has been randomly shutting itself down. When I first got the Evo 3D and was inserting the battery for the first time, I noticed that there was a tiny bit of play after the battery has been placed in the phone. I looked at the contacts for the battery and saw that it *might* be possible, under certain circumstances, for the battery to not make full contact with the terminals. I only had my stock battery for a short time, so I didn't notice the phone power itself off, but that all changed after getting the seidio battery.
What I did to make the battery contact the terminals better was to cut a small strip of rubber band and place that so it stands vertically right below the SD card (it doesn't actually touch the SD card). After I did this, I placed the battery back in and it makes much better contact with the battery terminals and fits more snug, kind of like the OG EVO 4G had So far, I haven't had any random shutdowns since doing this.
i cut a strip out of a business card and put it in at the bottom of the battery(opposite of the sim card) and that has been my fix. i was gonna try and exchange it for the problem, but the dent in my metal surround shows it has been dropped.

I'm not sure if it's an actual defect of the phone or the battery for the phone. If they manufacture the battery about 1 - 2 mm longer in length, I think it would fix the problem completely.

A loose battery connection can cause a lot of glitches,random reboots,slow charging,etc. The second week I had my E3D I noticed the battery was a little loose so I ended up with 2 layers of business card opposite the contacts. The way I see it, it may not help but it sure can't hurt.

I didn't notice that... my e3d charging at very slow rate. now I gotta check my just to make sure i didn't get a defeated one.
I think some of you guys missed that he's not using the stock battery.
After a couple weeks of fixing the loose battery, I can confirm that it does work like a charm. Every week, I would get a handful of random shutdowns which required pulling battery to get the phone back on. With my simple rubber band 'mod' I have only had the phone power down once, and it seems as if I am getting much better battery life as well.

Nope, shouldn't hurt the Evo 3D at all. I would highly recommend switching to a rubber band if possible. It makes the battery fit perfectly without any risk of scratching the inside of the device.
I've got myself two CHICHITEC batteries and with these I have no problems.

A loose or dirty connection is like putting a resistor in the circuit. The voltage goes down and the current goes up. So to me shimming the battery is preferable to a non removable battery and random glitches. Thanks for your concern about scratching,good point, but I could care less what the battery compartment looks like as long as I have a good connection.
I had the same issue with my aftermarket 3500 battery. I ended up cutting a small sliver of business card, placing it on the bottom and left side of the battery and then securing it to the battery itself with electrical tape. This way when I remove the battery to put my stock one back in (which is my daily battery) I don't have to worry about anything.

Sorry to hear about your aftermarket battery It's good that you found a 'fix' for it by making it more snug. How long have you had the 'fix' in place, and have you had any random reboots or shutdowns afterwards?

Yeah I just happened to have a huge bag of rubber bands that I bought like 5 years ago, lol. I probably shouldn't worry about it either, but unfortunately I am OCD about my phone, among other things

My 2yr old daughter dropped the mobile from a height of around 2 feet yesterday.
Initially everything seemed to work fine.I thanked the back case for saving it but After a few minutes,there was a strong pink spot near the top of the display, And then slowly it turned into blue and it spread towards the entire display. Now currenly mobile is completely black..
I can see that its turned on but i could not see anything.
So changing the display is the only way out?
I had a lot of phones before,right from N70 to 5800.All these phones took lot of abuse and still working fine. The hype about Gorilla glass made me assume that it would be much much stronger than any other phones i had used so far.But completely disappointed.
My brother recently replaced his SGS1's display after it fell from a 3ft table.Gorilla glass broke.I could not believe it.
Gorilla glass has nothing to do with anything. The display has obviously been damaged. You'll need to either return it to Samsung or have a go at replacing the screen yourself (plenty of how to's online).

Gorilla glass is scratch-resistant. It's not scratch-proof, uncrackable or unbreakable.
Still surprises me that people are surprised that bad things can happen to a phone when you drop it.. If I dropped you horizontally from a height of 3 feet, you'd feel it - worse if it was head first

My first SGS2 didn't even last a night : when I got it and got home, I plugged it into the mains after having almost completely discharged the 40% or so that was left in the stock battery provided with it, turned off the display so it wouldn't take the whole night to charge (I wanted to toy around with it some more, what else ? ) and when I checked back on it I couldn't even touch it, it was so damn hot that it burned my fingertips and I had to drop it back down on the desk..
I quickly unplugged it, got my infrared thermometer, and in the 5-10 minutes it took me to find this thermometer it had gotten back down to a mere (!) 86°C (measure taken on the camera lens, that's the spot that gets the hottest usually. It has not taken me more than an hour after first unpacking it to notice how hot this unit can get at times, and soon noticed that the camera lens was the weak spot. Not hard to figure out that the CPU was very near to it, and the service manual confirmed that when I got ahold of it), so it had to be at least 100°C when I unplugged it.. :/
And of course when it had cooled back down enough I tried it, but it wouldn't power up, ever again... Luckily, Orange replaced it for free and under 24hrs -but it was some luck that it was completely and irreparably fried (at this time I didn't yet have a jig), because otherwise they'd have seen that I had already rooted it -in the few hours that I had it I had found the time to do this, at the office when I was bored...
The replacement unit I got instead never overheated that much (though it too can get pretty hot at times, but that's usually a sign of something going on inside the system, and tells me to check the logcat asap to see what's going on), even though it's a chinese-made unit like the first one, but in the 5 months I've owned it it got its fair share of unvoluntary drop-downs (on a hard tiling floor and usually from 2.5-3ft high, the height of my desk). So far it has survived at least a good 10 falls 'and it's probably closer to 15-20 actually) but it's holding fast, no trouble to mention (except those that I myself cause.. lol Can't count the times I've had to reflash a ROM anymore, just because I fiddled with the wrong setting in root mode And of course, Murphy's law helping, that always happens at 2-5AM when I'm fiddling with it before going to sleep, and I have to get downstairs again to get my jig and my flashing gear hooked to the computer and find a suitable stock ROM to start over, sometimes even having to repartition the whole damn contraption, and wasting away the precious few hours of sleep I could've had if I had given up earlier... But "****up and error" has always been my usual way of learning )...
A couple of months ago, I was working on a car and forgot the phone was in my pocket, so I laid down on my side and cracked my screen ... The LCD and touch work fine, it's just the glass. I don't really care about replacing it for the time being (plus I've heard its difficult), but I've noticed my battery has been dying more quickly than it used to. Could the cracked screen cause it somehow? Or could the battery have been damaged?
I cant see a cracked screen would cause the battery to drain quicker. Have a look at the battery...is it damaged.? Check whats running in the bk ground. Also have a look on youtube. Its not that hard to replace the screen. But it does depend on how good your are with things like this.

I've checked all that out, and it all seems fine. I keep minimal stuff running on my phone, and I haven't installed anything since. just updated some apps, but I'll keep monitoring them.
I know there are videos, but I just haven't wanted to spend the time to do it yet. Im going to switch to Verizon in November and I'll probably replace the screen then to sell it.

Hello all, I am here to see if anyone can break this down for me.
Recently my phone's battery status has been, well, acting weirdly. For instance, let's say the phone says it has 36% left, shut it down, turn it back on, it says it has 24% left, but then a minute later zoom back up to 32%. This got me wondering if it was my battery depleted. The phone it's self is over 1 and a half years old. Possibly 2, so it wouldn't be surprising to see it is depleted.
Even if it isn't depleted, what's with my phone dying in 2-4 hours with Data Connection on? I mean, when it's on Airplane mode it hardly uses any battery at all, minus 5% in 6-8 hours of on-time. But with the mobile data connection on it uses 30-40% in 1 hour. This is strange.
The photo describing my issues above are included. You will notice a huge drop and spike back up, this is where the battery says it is at a high percentage then goes down 5-12% then back up. Before it was only 5%, but as time went on this difference got bigger. Now it's 5-15% of battery lost.
In one instance I have the battery at 17%, then all of a sudden it drops to 11% seconds after taking the 17% screenshot. You can also notice the huge drop in the history. Can someone describe what's happening?

Has the device been dropped or encountered any moisture? Sounds like it could be a Hardware/software problem....but like you said there could be a 50/50 chance that it is the battery Tho......there is replacement batterys you can purchase online and you can dissasemble the phone pretty easily to repair/replace the battery

I've dropped it a few times, but this was on soft terrain (EX: Bed, Pillows, etc.). I only dropped it twice on hard or rough terrain (EX: Kitchen Floor, Sidewalk, etc.) but it had a case on. I dropped it once on the floor of my kitchen and it impacted the right-lower corner of the phone, the case was severely chipped, and there is a noticeable graze (is what I can describe) into the phone where it impacted, when you feel your finger over it, you can feel the damage that happened. It was right under the microphone, but nothing was damaged (the phone was still working fine). The second time for some reason my muscles in my arms said "Nah, taking a break" (when I was giving my phone to my friend) and my hand opened and my phone went flying into the street (still with this hard case on, the same one that was chipped), I picked it up quickly and the back of the case was entirely scratched bad. It also impacted hard on the lower-left side corner of the phone, a chunk of the case broke off. But no damage was done to the exterior of the phone.
If by moisture you mean water (or any liquid), then yes. I have spilled water on it before, but not a lot, just a few drops. This was on the screen though, so I'm not sure if anything "would" happen.

It's more than likely a software issue....kit Kat has bugs and one of them is battery drainage issues...lollipop 5.0.2 is in the integration stage as we speak and isnt far from the certification stage of being released...with the update is gonna bring a lot of enhancements and bug fixes including better battery life....also on kitkat one of the things that's helped me get way better battery life on my m7 is using power saver and only using WiFi and mobile data when needed...and when im making calls and text only I use extreme power saver.....now as far as the issue with the battery changing it's state of charge before and after the device is powered off and on sounds like a hardware or battery defect....it could just be a coincidence but to be safe I'd have a certified repair shop take a look at it and do an evaluation to see what May or May not be wrong with it! A warning to all of you out there with an old Touchpad. LiPo batteries do eventually go bad, and sometimes catastrophically. Came home tonight and my kid tells me her Touchpad is broken. I asked what happened and she said she didn't do anything...upon closer inspection, the battery has swollen as much as 3/4 of an inch in spots, causing the case to push apart. Amazingly the screen never cracked...
Luckily, and maybe because the battery was dead (she hadn't charged it since before christmas) there was no fire or smoke...brings a whole new meaning to the "Touchpad Fire Sale"!
Anyone else seen this (with a touchpad)?

The battery is fine and will last for ever! as long as you don't let it drain.
Open the Touchpad, get a needle and puncture the black film that is covering the battery is like a balloon.
Take all the air out and press with your finger to make the film completely flat.
Charge the battery, if is dead charger it and cover it to remain warm. Then use the toolbox to reset it and charge it, use it and charge it.
Your battery will be brand new, I have done it and it works!

I've repaired two that were swollen. It's a pain to get the case apart. I didn't have the guts to mess with them.
The tablets were fine after a replacement battery was installed. The case wasn't in the best of shape though...

I think I still have one laying in a bucket, I might take it out back and see if it's only air.

Yes, with a needle, you poked it until all trapped air comes out. No need to removed the battery. If you start seen a dark spot on the screen, that is due to a built up of air in the battery and is pushing against the screen creating the stain. The battery on the Touchpad are extremely durable, is impressive!. If you maintain it properly it will last a very extremely long time. But if you leave it charging and cooked it, then is not a problem with the battery but the user
Do NOT poke the battery. It is NOT air. Doing so compromises the battery and a majority of the safety precautions. Remove it and replace it.
Look up lipo fires on YouTube. It's not worth it.

While Xda is NOT liable for anything any member does with or to their device, perforating the battery casing is a very bad idea, and can certainly cause ejection of acidic substances, can cause a fire, and at minimum can release toxic fumes.
Piercing the battery casing is a dangerous suggestion regardless of how many times it was done successfully.
