Hi xda!
I'm noob on this forum, so don't swear me for coming up with noob questions.
I hope I posted this thread for the right pleace, If not, let me know that.
So.. I bought a Galaxy S2.. I head the stock ICS 4.0.3 android OS on it, but I decided to try some custom ROMs. (Thanks for my cousin for that.)
So I started with the ROM S4. Worked very fine, the battery life was good.
In fact.. My question is, that... Can I flash any kind of Kernel on any kind of ROM?
I mean.. If I flash a custom ROM such as Cyanogenmod 10.2 on my phone, I can flash a Franco Kernel on it?
Or. Now I use Vivek ROM bassed on android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean using Jeboo Kernel v2.2. Can I flash on this a Franco Kernel ? Or it will brick my phone?
I would really need an answer.. I've been searching on the forum, but couldn't find anything..
PS: Sorry for my bad english. I'm Romanian, and the English language is only my 3rd language.
Hi...
If you installing Any custom rom on your device check that if that rom needs any custom kernel or not . The publisher specified that kernel in their thread. If they not mentioned that it means your stock kernel will be fine with that rom
Any more quesions regarding this.. post below ...

hi guys,
i'm new here so i don't know how everything works,so i could use some help.. i've recently rooted my phone using CF-ROOT 5.0 XWKJ1 and i'm a bit confused what to do now.. i wan't my phone to run on newest stock firmware, which one should I use ? the most recent one in intratech thread is XWLA4 (phone is XXKI4,just like mine,so it is for my phone or what does it mean? ), can I just flash it to the phone ? can i do it through CWManager app ? and i still don't entirely understand the difference between Kernel and ROM, I'd also like to try the cyanogen mod, what should I do first ? and how can I flash back original stock rom ? because cyanogen is 100mb and original rom is 8, so I'm not sure if it will restore the phone to the stock state after flashing stock rom back.. and yes, I've read the guide to GalaxyS2 and Android, but still do not understand everything..
thank you guys for your effort.

You need to start reading the guides your questions are all answered in the relevant guides .
You want CM you follow the instructions for CM you want xxx you follow the instructions .
ROM is firmware kernel is part of the firmware that interfaces OS and Hardware .
But suggestion is to wait for release of ICS .

Take time out to read the guides as it'll help you out.

Download your original or stock firmware and save it .Or just simply keep a copy of the file you flashed 2.3.6
Also which stock Rom to put and which is newest i mean on gingerbread not on ICS, and that rom i want to be more aware in battery saver thats my needs for now. And also if I put stock newest rom than also i need to flash the kernel or not???
Roms have kernel built in .
And whats the privilegies if I flash the kernel to??
Fail to understand are you confusing kernel with firmware or with a rooted kernel .
I help couse this Samsung G SII isn't mine, it's my cousin 's phone, so last thing. Is to brick his phone.
Honest opinion is you dont have enough knowledge to flash a phone that you do not own what are you going to do if you brick it buy him a new phone .

And i'm asking for specific parameters like android ver 2.3.5 with speedrom . I can't find any posts that match like that one.

Just flash CM9 in CWM. It will also install CM9 ICS kernel so you're good to go. Maybe you'll need to flash another modem in case your GB modem doesnt work with ICS.
After that, I would recommend to flash Siyah kernel, but its up to you.
P.S. DO NOT EVER USE ROM MANAGER (it comes with CM9)

Hello and Good Day Devs !
I am kind of a newbie in the world of rooting (for samsung galaxy s2 gt i9100). So i just recently got my dad's permission to root and flash a custom rom on my device . I am currently using a samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100 running jelly bean 4.1.2 XWLST . Am from India and i am highly confused. So i would like to know which kernel would be the best for rooting my phone (best i.e. safe , bugless) After rooting i am planning to flash a custom rom. I would Most probably flash the PACman ROm (jelly bean 4.2.2) and would like to know which kernel would suit the rom. rather i would like to know which kernel is supported by the PACman rom. i searched and read a few threads and concluded that siyah is a bit buggy causing a lot of problems . Philz is a good kernel but i also read that PhilZ's kernel is not supported by a few roms. I also checked out the 'jeboo" kernel and found out that it was somehow related to the PHilZ kernel and eventually backed out . So pease help me out devs .. any help would be appreciated and thanks a lot for your co-operation
Whatever kernel you flash will be overwritten when you flash your custom rom.......every custom rom comes with its own kernel......
So the choice is yours......
Select your kernel and flash it however the instructions say, then flash your custom rom.....job done.....no issues/worries about incompatiability........

start with siyah kernel v6.0b5
It is the safest kernel to start with
Then flash pacman
It is your choice to flash a new kernel over the stock pacman kernel
You can flash whatever custom kernel you like and as @keithross39 mentioned dont worry about incompatibility
Use odin
Gud luck mate
The only time you have to think about kernel compatiability is if you decide to flash a kernel on top of your custom rom. As I previously mentioned, the kernel you flash to root your phone will be overwritten when you flash the rom, so no incompatiability will exist because you will have basically erased that kernel during the flash. But any kernel you flash on top of your new rom HAS to be compatiable or you'll end up with an unuseable phone......

Thanks A lot devs . I will now root my phone and flash the rom ! thanks a lot for your help!
Hello! I'm currently on stock OOS 3.1.4 with TWRP and I want to install Lineage or RR 5.8. Do I need a custom kernel? On this posts says "Linux 3.4.x". It's the same with stock kernel? I'm a little noob on this, haven't installed kernels before. Thank you!
Hello .
Ahh your first rom . Hope yours goes better than mine xD mind you it was slightly harder to flash when I did it
(LG Optimus) that's how long ago it was.
Normally kernels are bundled with roms. So you don't have to worry. In 4 years on this forum I've never flashed a kernel for the use of a rom. There are plenty of kernels you can flash after if you like. But normally if you flash a kernel before flashing a rom. Rom will override your kernal
Hope I've helped .
Give me a Thanka if I have
