Glad I discovered this app! I was able to program my TV and A/V receiver no problem. I was able to add a 'Microsoft Steaming Cable Box' of some sort which kind of works for some commands (guide, scroll, ok, etc.) but not all commands. Is there way I can delete this and locate/add an actual Xbox to my devices? It would be nice to get the play/pause, skip & colored buttons to function properly too. I did some searching but can't seem to come up with any info on this.
Thanks for the help!

I have Smartglass already & it doesn't do what I need it to do. I want to know how to get WatchOn to work. I think I've got most of the buttons working now, just not the four colored buttons.

What I did was told the app during setup that I used a set top box for TV rather than the TV itself. Then it will show a half dozen or so popular options. On the bottom is button to show more. Click that and the in the text field search for Microsoft. When it shows that as an option, click it. Pretty much everything will work including skip buttons on recorded programs and the guide and everything. Almost a perfect solution. It doesn't seem to want to allow you to power the device on/off as well as a few other functions but for the most par the popular options work.
WatchOn is a 1/2 assed app. It is beta at best. There is no Xbox or Windows Media Center support. If you program more then 1 room the secondary rooms guides stop working. Its a great idea but horrible execution.

I feel like a fair amount of effort was put into this app to just abandon it. I mean, it's SO close to being something great that it couldn't require that much more effort to polish it further. The possibilities are limitless. I was trying to get a Kenwood A/V receiver to match up to the code for my Kenwood nav unit in my truck with no luck. I was hoping that I could have another 'room' set up with any random TV and then a Kenwood receiver so that I could do the most basic controls from my phone. Volume, play, pause & skip. I have steering wheel controls so it's not something I would likely use often if at all but it would be cool to have. The ability to add a 'game system' as a device though would go a long ways in most people's systems. We have 4 Xbox 360's throughout our home to stream everything from recorded TV programs, downloaded, TV, movies & other video so for us our 360's are the center piece of our home entertainment. Not being able to add the most important device to control fully is a real damper on using this app for us.

Secondary room guides work for me. Im betting Watchon not being able to work with 360 is because of microsoft not the app. Hell no one can release a wireless gamepad for the xbox, the wireless capabilities are exclusively for their controllers. Theyre stingy like that.

Not true. I've got 4 Harmony Logitech Universal remotes that I've used for years that control the 360's perfectly in every way.

It's just IR. I have a Harmony 300 that works with it great.
Yeah they probably licensed logitech to use their stuff. Like I said though try finding a mad catz or another aftermarket brand wireless 360 controller. Theyre stingy like that.

I agree. I actually really like the app if they would just put half the effort logitech has into making it work with nearly every device. Then add some customizable buttons and you would have a perfect app.

Thanks, I got it mostly working. I thought I had looked in every menu for Microsoft, but I must have missed the settop setup or something. It still won't let me type in numbers greater than 999, but i guess it is better than nothing. And you saw the second page of buttons too, right? If not there is a second page that does have the colored buttons. But I don't know if they work.
Actually, to be honest, I would pay for content discovery with my media center. Just no one will make an app like watchon for media center. At least Not that I have found.

One option would be doubleTwist with the optional AirSync plug-in (which adds the Airplay functionality). Otherwise, you could just mirror the Prime's display using the micro hdmi output directly to the television for a wider choice of content.

But this doesn't mirror the Prime's screen, which is what I'd like to be able to do. AFAIK that isn't currently possible. Correct me if I'm wrong. We have an AppleTv in one of our conference rooms at work and I would like to link to it for presentations, etc.
Thanks for the responses. It seems that the solution I'm looking for does not exist. Shame... I will however install one of the airplay apps & see how that works out.

I do actually. Do you understand the question I asked, because your link doesn't answer my question...
If you have a 3rd Gen Apple TV then doubletwist doesn't work with Video. It works well with Audio. I had a case going on with doubletwist where they ended up refunding me the cost of the Airsync plug in as it wasn't working as it was supposed.
I think with 2nd Gen Apple TV you might be alright, but I haven't tried it.
I was trying out an app called 'iMediaShare' or something of the likes the other day. I was able to go through photos, videos, music (as long as it is stored on your device and not in gMusic), and youtube over an Apple TV. Looking through it, I do not see any way to go through PDFs or CAD designs though. For everything, your best bet as of now would be to use the mini HDMI and find separate apps for everything.
I have tried both AppleTV media player & iMedia player, but I cannot even see the Apple TV in the devices list. Its a third gen...

Honestly, Sense TV app that comes with the phone, does a real good decent job as a Remote app.

OP's question is still relevant. Until we have market apps that utilize the IR blaster, this is yet another feature that's dependent upon using a Sense-laden ROM.
Look up peel on the playstore... I haven't used it yet but it's supposedly used with devices with an ir port.

Ha gave a link anyway...
I'm looking for alternatives too, the built in App doesn't support my denon receiver and I can't seem to figure out how to tell the remote I want to use the menu button on my TV sometimes and not my DVR.
Not sure of any apps, but there are workarounds to your problems. Create completely separate remotes for your devices when you don't want overlap, or if it's just one button that overlaps you can map that to one of the buttons on the HTC remote app that you aren't using (for me, that's the "." button on the number pad).
Will the remote app still not support your receiver if you do it the hard way (programming each button)? Or is just that you would rather not have to go through that (understandable).

I'd rather not have to program each button. I'm longing for the Harmony folks releasing a remote app. Activity based remotes are awesome.
I'm actually looking for an app that will mimic the Apple Remote so that I can control my Macbook with it.
I am just looking for an app that will skip all the programming BS and just left me use it as a remote. I don't have any service as I use 100% streaming and downloading for my content. Also simple functions like power/input take extra button presses. Should be much easier than it is.

I saw a video of a guy using his phone as a controller for World of Warcraft while running the game on his PC. He was essentially using the phone as a casting bar. I'm wondering what software (if any) is the best for that sort of thing. I basically need something that will act as a second monitor for my laptop and let me create custom buttons on that screen.
In fact, I don't even need the screen function. I just need a tap on my phone to register as a keypress on my laptop, and I need to be able to configure a grid of buttons. Being able to also give them custom icons world be ideal, but that might be too much to hope for. And connecting via bluetooth would also be smashing, but again probably just a dream.
Is there something out there like that, or was that video just a fabrication/test?
If I had to guess, that was proabably a WoW hack. Most likely, it was interfacing with his WoW account and not with his computer directly.
I dont play wow but apps like blueputdroid or other bluetooth keyboard like apps may work right i know that app has all the f keys and watnot??

Was wondering if someone can help me with an issue I'm having with programming the watch on app with my availability receiver.
I have a Samsung TV, blue ray player, cable vision dvr, and Denon AV receiver. I can program everything but having an issue with my Denon receiver. The watch on app allows me to setup the receiver and I can actually turn it on and off no problem. But I can't adjust the volume at all? I sent in a service ticket but have not gotten a reply just yet. I've tried setting up the watch on app to control volume through the receiver, but again nothing happens when I press the volume button.
Can someone help me out on this? What am I doing wrong here?
Rooted S4
Probably a Q & A -
But honestly - if your serious about using Google your phone as a remote, I would highly suggest Smart Remote for the s4 app (colortiger) . Macros, zones, widgets, huge range of devices. Controls my Denon just fine, and the xbox very well. I used watch on once, and looked elsewhere immediately after having several issues and a lack of options (nfc etc). A bit pricey, but worth it IMO. I also own Touchsquids comparable app... Not as pretty, but functional and I like that it saves my profile between flashing new roms.
I am in no way affiliated with either, just my seasoned opinion on the subject - as I can offer no real help or suggestions on the particular problem. I have heard of many issues (as well as perks) with watchon, but as with most preloaded stock, it often falls short of a good developer equivalent. Check it out tho:

Ok so the smart remote app is definately miles ahead of the watch on app as far as programmability goes. Way more buttons and options than the watch on app. Thank you for introducing me to this app. We'll worth the $10

I am using Touchsquid Remote for Samsung that you can get from Play. It is more expensive more highly customizable. I like having multiple configurations and setups (bedroom, family room, etc.)
It is more expensive but well worth the money. You can even have buttons that link you to other apps.
We seem to be missing the required "Post your home screen" thread - so let me start it off !
Here's mine. I'm using HALauncher so that I can customize the home screen to my needs. I'm a big fan of HALauncher as it allows:
1 - Control over grouping and ordering. On the Shield default launcher, most-used apps go to the front of the line, so the order is always changing.
2 - Add sideloaded apps
3 - Add web page bookmarks
4 - Add wallpaper
5 - Add custom images for apps on launchers

I figured I'd get in on this. This is my SATV home screen. I am using Next 3D launcher and Go Weather EX for the weather widget as the SATV doesn't have the ability to use system widgets, but Next launcher can use widgets specifically built for it like task manager, music, weather, switch, and a few others.
do you need to be rooted to use a launcher, or it just that you click on the luancher icon and then it opens the new menu interface and thats it?

do yo uguys mouse and keyboard to navigate? isnt that annoying and takes away from using the remote etc

how do you benefit from a full android experience?
I am using the sideloader and it seems to work well.

Happy Shield TV Setup
Very happy with my Shield TV setup now.
I gave the stock experience a go for a good week before getting fed up of the limitations of Android TV, despite loving the well polished user interface.
Now running full Android 5.1 (v2.2 of zulu99's build), rooted with TWRP recovery and Xposed framework installed.
With a variety of Android TV apps sideloaded from apkmirror.com, I'm now pretty close to having everything which I had before on stock:
Slick, remote-friendly launcher: HALauncher (with lovely background / wallpaper images)
SHIELD Remote as primary input / control device, 90% functional (physical buttons, volume control, audio output when heaphones connected all work, microphone doesn't work yet)
Remote-friendly TV versions of Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Emma for Spotify and SHIELD Hub / GeForce Now
Casting entire screen (or specific cast-enabled apps such as Netflix) from Android works and performs well enough to cast an entire movie
With all the numerous advantages of having full android, such as:
Multiple user accounts / profiles (my wife's Spotify plays no longer feed into my last.fm profile, thank god!)
Fully automated video downloading setup, thanks to Pushbullet, Advanced Download Manager and Tasker
Chrome web browser, for web browsing on your TV (finally!)
Casting screen from wife's Macbook Air and/or iPhone now works too, thanks to app "AirPlay Mirroring Receiver"
Thanks to all here who have helped get me to this stage! - primarily zulu99 for his full Android build, but everyone else who has helped by sharing tips/tricks to improve various bits of the experience.
The only thing left to get working as far as I'm concerned is the SHIELD Remote microphone.
This is a really frustrating one, as it's such a nice to have feature and really makes it feel like a futuristic device when you never need to type anything again - Google's voice recognition is outstanding.
I'm also at a bit of a loss as to what to investigate next with it; I've attempted to debug the remote from my PC but could only get it to create a single uni-directional A2DP channel for audio playback.
I guess I should start trying to dig through the kernel modules included in the stock system image.
Anyway, here's the top bit of my home screen:
and a few other screenshots showing the rest of the home screen, settings and the microphone issue.
How do you change the home launcher without changing away from stock.
Almost a real Android now!
@zulu99 Full Android 5.1 (v2.2 build), rooted with Nova Launcher. Still need to install Xposed framework and a few other bits, but getting close to having a real Android now!
Loving some of the setups you guys have! I'll have to get to work on setting mine up.

I'm actually not entirely sure, the volume slider on the remote wasn't working for me initially either.
I had written it off as something that wasn't going to work, but then noticed it was working accidentally later on after I'd set up more apps.
I believe all I did between the time where it wasn't working and started working was:
Install a few apps made for Android TV (e.g. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HALauncher, Emma for Spotify)
Disconnect and reconnect the controller a few times
Restart the Shield TV (NSTV) a few times
If you give the above a try and the volume controls on your remote are still not working, post in my other thread about the remote and I'll try and narrow down what's making it work for me!
