I've been having some trouble with receiving notifications on my desire X. Currently, i am on mySENSEdx+ RC3.0 custom rom / prototype-U custom kernel. I've had this issue even when i was on stock rom. Normally I receive notifications just fine but every now and then I don't get them unless i open the app itself like whatsapp, gmail or twitter etc. I am not sure what the issue is. Been using this app called "Push Notifications Fixer" and been testing different values on there but hasn't helped much. Out of all of my previous android phones, the only other phone that i've had this issue on was the HTC One X. I eventually got rid of that because of this issue and also because of it's battery life. I like the desire X and would like to keep it but this this issue with the push notifications does get a bit frustrating at times. Any suggestions that can help would be great.
P.S. I have searched throughout these forums and haven't found any solutions for this problem of mine and have also tried google but to no avail. Posting here as couldn't find any workable solution to this problem.
Do you have anything changed in autostart applications? When your phone boots, all the apps that receive notifications will be started automatically. If you changed something there the background service will start only when you start the app.

Nope. Haven't changed anything of that sort. This issue does not occur all the time but every once in a while in a couple of days etc. Haven't had any luck in trying to sort it out.
Same problem is here too...
Maybe this problem is because Google Cloud Messaging integrated in the apps. I have never had that problem with notifications, but if u have maybe used Greenify app, task killer or something, it maybe messing around wih that noticication system...
Edit: do u have outlook or some other app that are not making any trouble with the notifications?

The problem I've had with the push notifications seems to have decreased - It doesn't happen as often anymore - Changed a few settings and removed a task manager i had downloaded plus also changed settings in the Greenify app etc - Haven't had any issues off-late - If you are using similar apps, try changing the settings etc and see if that helps you maybe as it seems to have worked for me -

Yea I think your right - The issue seems to be with the Google Cloud push services - I got rid of the task manager and changed settings on Greenify and so far haven't had issues with the push notifications again - I don't use outlook on my phone - Mostly, the issue occured with whatsapp / twitter etc - Gmail and the email client on the phone were fine - The only reason this was odd for me was because I haven't had this issue with other phones that i've used before the DX - the only other phone that gave me this kind of trouble was the HTC One X - but for now the issue seems to have been resolved - Going to keep my fingers crossed and hopefully the problem won't occur again
P.S. Thank you everyone for your replies

My Facebook push notifications have stopped coming through. Nothing I do seems to work.
First I cleared the application data – a fix I found on Google (this fixed it last time it happened about 4 months ago).
Then I uninstalled the app, rebooted the phone (stock unrooted Vodafone SGS2, reinstalled but still no joy.
Can anybody please help?
Yep mine stopped too so I have actually turned back on email notifications, now that is reliable ...
I will soon ditch FB anyway so ...
How long ago did it stop? Mine stopped sometime Tuesday night.
Have you tired clearing the application data.
Try the blackberry workaround. It worked to me.

Same problem here, im on XXLPB they have not been working for the last 3 days
Generally it can be solved as-go to your main phone settings, applications, manage applications, facebook, clear data/cache. then open the app and resign in.
Also, in main settings, accounts & sync, is facebook enabled? is background data and auto sync checked?
in all the years ive had android Ive never had them working. I tried the Blackberry workaround last week and I received one notification and then it stopped again.
Back to Friendcaster, buggy but at least notifications work
For some reason facebook messenger has stopped notifying for me too.
Im using friendcaster -- some issue, but overally far more responsive than official app
Funny thing...
You wanna read something funny about this issues??
I own a Samsung Wave, the first one, and the social hub premium on Bada -its OS- does support Facebook with messenger and push!!!
I'm tired of asking Samsung support why the same functionality is not implemented in the social hub for android!!
The Samsung Facebook application for Bada works flawlesly, push, messenger, uploads, everything. Yet, on this device, Samsung's Flagship, social hub sucks big time, it sucks so much that users are left having to install other apps for the same functionality that could be already integrated into Android by Samsung...
Sorry for the OT, just venting a rant because I share the same push problems you do....

After taking the ICS update, I've been having some issues with a "facebook authentication fail" error daily. Has anybody else had this problem? It might be another sign to give up on Facebook...google+ works perfectly.
I'm running Nilsp BGS and I get that error also but only about once a week.

I had that issue too after flashing nils rom but not with anything else before. I was on various ics roms. Thought it was because of the ad block script so reflashed, disabled it and haven't had it since.

I've been having this problem daily as of late, been on cleanrom 4.5 for months but this just started happening a couple weeks ago. Bump for a solution...
Yep, having the same problem on stock and locked Rezound, It's effing annoying!
hmmm.. i've been having somewhat of a similar issue as well. whenever i try and share a photo to facebook, it says you must sign in first (which i already am in the android app) so it takes me to what looks like the app but it just STAYYYSSS on the facebook app bootup logo forrrrrrrEEEVVVVVVEEEEER! idk what to do.
Running Viper Rom sense 4.0
go to Settings > Apps > All > Facebook > remove Updates, I was having the issue too and read on another forum to just remove the updates

This will do it. Funny that it worked fine for ICS for so long until they updated a couple weeks ago. FB needs to hire our devs to make their apps.
I'm having this issue too. Will try clearing data and updating again.

FWIW, also encountering on an Arnova 10 G2 tablet. I don't think it's ROM-specific or device specific. It's a problem with the app.
It is certainly and issue with ICS as I have seen on other phone forums that this issue is there...
The last known version of Facebook that works is version 1.8.4 which you can find here on xda... Just search...
The version that sits on the phone after un-installing the updates is 1.8.1

Facebook's app is simply terrible. I bought FriendCaster Pro but even it doesn't display everything in my news feed for some reason.
Lately I've just been using the mobile site. Make a shortcut to it and it "feels" like an app
Actually, its a conflict between the latest official Facebook App and HTCs Sense Facebook App.
Basically, use the old version of Facebook or freeze/remove the Sense FB app. I removed the HTC version and haven't seen any differences in functionality or features.

Thats what I thought too until I removed htc facebook from my ROMs. Now if I install facebook from the market it does the same thing. So I don't think its caused by htc's facebook. I solved it by just not installing facebook but that solution only works for me.
Perhaps its also the HTC FB chat then. I removed both at the same time because I never use chat.
Wow, I didn't realize there were so many people with the same problem. #FacebookSucks

Mine did that also and when I logged in again i had to set my sync options again. On the last time i told it not to sync and it has not done it since.

This "seems" to have fixed the problem for me. But I am now anticipating it to stop working since I said that
Hi all,
I just wanted to see if other people are getting chat heads(new messenger update) to work. It doesn't appear for me on my DNA, but other people seem to have it working on their phones.
Thanks in advanced!
Working great for me. Enabled SMS integration in the app and now all of my SMS messages pop up too. Really nice feature honestly.

Works for me too!
working here. emojis are a nice touch... but i can't see ones people are sending me... oh well.
interesting well glad its working for you guys - I am not sure what I need to do - should the chat head be automatic? I am getting SMS alerts to messenger - just no chat head showing.
in the messaging app for facebook... go to settings>notification settings> should see a box for "chat heads". enable it. i also made it my main texting app(also in the settings but under sms/mms) not sure if that has anything to do with it though...
Thanks, it looks like I don't have an option for chat heads in the notification settings like I should .. interesting .. I'm on version 2.4.2 build 178229

I cannot see the Chat Heads options in settings (
I can't get the chat-head's option to show up in settings on my Nexus 4 either. I've tried rebooting and clearing all app data, but nothing.
I found the APK for the new Facebook Home application.. it's only for specific devices as of right now... any way to install on our device to test it out?? Do I have to do something crazy like edit build.prop???
I can't get it to show up on mine, either. Reinstalled both facebook app and messenger app to latest versions. Just don't see any option in notification settings..
Here's what I tried and no go:
Uninstalling/reinstalling both messenger and facebook
clearing app data
reset/shutdown phone
and the combination of the 3
I'd be curious if it started working if you changed your build.prop device entry to one of the strings from a phone that is working. Seen this behavior before, far too often, in apps. Restricting settings based on device model, etc, when they're perfectly capable of working on others.
Chat head hhmmm interesting..
Facebook really top it with this

Yea, I am using a HTC one x, and have just updated from an AOKP rom to a cyanogen mod rom. So supported device and no go. Seen the settings on my girlfriends stock galaxy s 3, and have seen the settings and heads working. The thing is, a friend has cyanogen mod on an unsupported phone and it works.. So I have no idea at all.
I did try to get Facebook home working before during the leaks, and am running android 4.2.1... They're the only things different to everyone else maybe????
For people that have it working and not working, what are your setups? Phone models, roms and their bases? There must be a common factor here, or a mod to enable it... :silly:
Do you have corporate email setup on your phone? I was thinking if it can disable this feature...

No, totally clean install with nothing but the two Facebook apps!
It's working for me, too. Perhaps 'cause I'm on a Sense 5 ROM?
Same problem
I am running cyanogen mod (nightlies) on galaxy s3. Same issue, I tried many things including clearing cache yet no option in messenger for chat heads..
I have no idea what's going on, and its extremely aggravating. I never use Facebook other than for when notifications show up, each of then pictures are taken of stats on a brand new s3 with a brand new AOKP ROM, and I have not even opened Facebook after a full battery charge and a reboot, and it still demolishes my battery.
I need help here, its driving me up the wall

seems to me like it's a wakelock bug which means that the application is preventing your phone from going into idle mode.uncheck all synch options and come back to report

Try it the old fashioned way
Delete Facebook and reinstall it. I had the same problem with Google Maps once and it worked that way.
Reinstalled and same behavior.
I even force stopped the app out of curiosity, and its still draining, even tho its still stopped

If he uses Greenifiy he won't receive any notifications from Facebook because the App will be hibernated.
That's right, Facebook will only sync when you open it, this is what fast Facebook does (which is very popular as it's a lightweight ver different version). Facebook is a big hogger but if you want instant updates, guess you'll have to put up with it. You could try clearing data, running sdmaid on a regular basis and clearing Facebook files, that might help.

Hey everyone basically I have a problem with my s3. When I'm using whatsapp messenger if I use the app I get push notifications fine but then like if I turn the screen off and let the phone go to standby while I do other stuff I won't receive push notifications from whatsapp. And then if I turn the screen of my phone back on and go on whatsapp whatsapp won't send messages or even show the last seen bit of one of my contacts .. it's almost like it's disconnecting from whatsapp and reconnecting does anyone have any ideas of what this could be cause it's really getting on my nerves cause people think I'm ignoring them haha when I'm actually not and it's just the phone/whatsapp being crap. Also I'm sure whatsapp never used to be like this when I first downloaded it and first got my phone it seems recently that every time I've updated it its got worse or something.. so yeah any help? Cheers.

Hey
Try to use Push Notifications Fixer (free from the play store) if you're rooted.
Imho it's a what's up problem. My friends on S4 and HTC Desire have the same.

It solved all of my push issues.
Have you made sure you gave PNF root permissions ? I would also suggest making sure that you don't have any task killer or app's that may interfere with PNF.
I don't know to be fair then. I definetly gave it root permissions. I've not greenified it and i don't know any apps I have that could interfere with it? Also I don't use a task killer they're crap.

I'd maybe suggest turning off all the apps that supposed to improve performance and battery like greenify etc. I personally doesn't use any of those. Other than that maybe you can contact the dev's
