Good day everyone:
I've just purchased this great device, at least spec wise, LG Optimus G (E970 for AT&T) and now I'm just waiting for it to arrive in the mail. For the record, I got a great deal on it from Walmart Wireless online for the upgrade price of $9.99 with 2-year contract and paying no taxes on the original retail price. That's the best deal ANYWHERE as far as I was able to find over the past month or so.
Anyway, on to the purpose of this thread. I've been looking t get the largest capacity and fastest speed microSD card that this smartphone would be compatible with right out of the box. To my surprise, other than basic general verbiage like "support for up
to 64 GB of expandable memory", I couldn't quickly find any detailed specs on what types of microSD cards and in what file format would work with this phone. Well, after much searching and compiling info from different sources, thought 'd share my findings with the rest of the members here so that they would have a definite answer in one spot.
I started with researching on the official site for the LG Optimus G E970 and grabbed the technical specifications PDF which states:
www DOT lg DOT com/us/support/products/documents/especsheet_lg_optimus_g_final DOT pdf - Link to LG Optimus G E970 technical specifications PDF
Internal Memory: 32GB total memory (16GB built in
memory and 16GB microSD card), and support for up
to 64 GB of expandable memory.

So, now knowing the maximum size in space that the phone will support (64GB), I looked up the best rated 64GB microSD card. This of course is debatable, yet I concluded that SanDisk made the best microSD cards in this size.
kb DOT sandisk DOT com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2520 - SD/SDHC/SDXC Specifications and Compatibility
SD Extended Capacity (SDXC™) card is an SD™ memory card based on the SDA 3.0 specification.
SDXC capacities range from 64GB to 2TB
Default Format: exFAT
Because SDXC uses a different file system called exFAT and it works differently than standard SD cards, this new format is NOT backwards compatible with host devices that only take SD (128MB to 2GB). Most host devices built after 2010 should be SDXC compatible. To ensure compatibility, look for the SDXC logo on cards and host devices (cameras, camcorders, etc.). NOTE: Internal card readers on laptops from 2008 and prior may NOT support SDXC cards. SDXC cards will work in SDHC compatible readers (not SD readers) if the computer OS supports exFAT. For more information on exFat see: Operating Systems that support the exFAT File System
Ultra High Speed, Phase I (UHS-I) bus design for SDHC and SDXC cards was added in SD spec 3.0. This is a design enhancement to increase the performance of SDHC/SDXC cards.
UHS-I specification defines two bus architecture options for up to 50MB/s (UHS-50) and 104MB/s (UHS-104) data transfer rates. These are theoretical maximum limits and actual maximum performance for a specific card is defined on it label or in advertising.
UHS is an enhancement to the original SD interface specifications. Host devices will obtain the UHS maximum speed when both the card and host device support UHS. Otherwise, the host device and card will use the slower SD maximum speed obtainable.
There is no compatibility problem using a UHS card with a non-UHS device.
Speed Class & UHS Speed Class Rating
Speed class ratings define a minimum guaranteed speed of SDHC/SDXC cards. Speed class rating is important for HD video mode or camcorders, where the device is actually saving a steady stream of data. The resolution and format of the video determines the amount of steady stream data. You should consult your camera user manual for minimum speed class requirements for HD video modes.
Speed Class (SD Bus):
Class Minimum Speed
2 2MB/s
4 4MB/s
6 6MB/s
8 8MB/s
10 10MB/s
UHS Speed Class (UHS Bus):
UHS Class Minimum Speed
I 10MB/s

Thus with this info, I settled on the SanDisk Ultra® microSDXC™ UHS-I class 10 64GB card within included Android app for file management (Product Number #SDSDQUA-064G-A11A). This is the product number I'd verify when purchasing this item from an American retailer.
**NOTE** there are slightly different product numbers for the same exact item when being sold in different continental areas
Now, the last thing I had to verify was if the LG Optimus G E970 was designed to have Android support the exFAT file system that is the default for this microSD card. I found that LG Electronics through a partnership has the Tuxera exFAT file system integrated into LGE Mobile flagship products starting with the LG Optimus G smartphone in November 2012. www DOT tuxera DOT com/news/lg-optimus-g-smartphone-line-ships-with-tuxera-exfat/ - You can check out the article here. This was the last piece of confirmation that I needed to be satisfied that SanDisk's 64GB mircoSD card products would work in this phone and all future LGE mobile smartphone devices. Happy happy, joy joy!
So, to make this long post short, yes, based on what I've researched, the LG Optimus G E970 will natively be compatible with the 64GB sized line of mircoSD cards. In fact, according to the last link I posted, the phone will even except microSD cards much larger than 64GB once they are more commonly found consumer retail locations. Of course, only time will tell if this is true.
I purchased that exact MicroSD and it works unless you flash a non-stock ROM. After that, you have to format it to something else (I think mine is formatted as EXT4)
EXFAT fix.

I noticed this thread as well during the research I've been doing here is deciding on purchasing this phone. I'm completely new to rooting and and flashing ROMs so until I do more studying on this I'll have to stick with the stock setup. My ultimate goal though it to at least root it so that I can use wifi tethering function without getting the stupid additional monthly charge from AT&T. I was able to do this on my current Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket without rooting thanks to FoxFi, but I've been reading that FoxFi doesn't work on Android OSs after ICS. If I do decide to flash another non-stock ROM then I'll mos def be looking more in depth at your thread link. Thanks!
As the author of that thread let me tell you that information is obsolete. All 4.3 roms I've tried read and write and mtp to my exfat cards just fine, right out of the box.
Samsung 64gb uhs1 hovering around $60 on Amazon. I've tried SanDisk too but had nasty failure rate. Had good luck with the Samsung that I bought a second one. They write 15-20 Mbps and read up to 70 Mbps in a USB 3 card reader, about half that in the phone. It's faster than the phone's built in storage.

There's plenty of people that would help you unlock and put on a custom rom on the lgog granted you did a little research yourself first. It's always a pain babying someone through it, but as long as you have an idea what you're doing before you start, there's plenty of us that can help. It's very hard to fully brick the lgog just so you know. If you ever want faster answers our IRC channel is probably the best way.

Yes, and they are on sale at best buy now for $65, and they are the minimum 20mb/s write variety. Buy it in store or online with "i'll pick up in store" and if you have any of the failure rate issues you can just replace it on the spot. Just my two pennies. It's $5 more than amazon but you get the faster rated speed one (lot of prior gen were class 6/uhs I) and the convenience of instant return/swaps.

That's good to know. I get my two new LG phones (Optimus G E970 & Optimus G Pro) in the mail tomorrow, and then I'll be picking up new 64GB microSD cards for both of them within a couple weeks, so I report back on how the cards are working for me then.

It'll probably be at least another month or two of studying the threads before I decide to jump into unlocking and flashing a custom ROM on my 2 new LG phones. Right, now my main focus will be to root them both so that I can get the most usage out of both the Root Explorer and SQLite Editor apps.
lol, and don't worry, I'm one that likes to try and research the hell out of something first, and then find at around 5 other people who've said that they have successfully done something a certain way before I attempt it. And what ever I learn, I'll mos def post it here in the forums (at least if it isn't posted already) if I think it can help others out.

Exfat works with the zip on every aosp rom I've tried recently and most of the recent 4.3 roms support exfat out of the box now that CM added it in, so anybody that clones a cm 10.2 repo will get native exfat support without a flashable zip.

I am looking for recommendation for a 32Gb Micro SD card that is the fastest and most stable for use in the AT&T Note.
Currently I have the following but they're not good:
- Kingston 8GB Class 6: REALLY slow - tansfer rate below 1 Mbps
- Transcend 32GB Class 4: slow - transfer rate about 2-3 Mbps
Both were bought from Amazon and as you can see, even a Class 6 MicroSD can have lower performance than Class 4, depending on the manufacturer.
You can check your MicroSD card speed using this tool from Google Play. The screenshot from that app shows some insane card speed, as shown below:

Thanks all for the recommendation and the screenshot!
Looks like Samsung and Polaroid CLASS 10 is the way to go. I will research the price and buy on of these.
By the way, a friend of mine recommended the NEW Sandisk SDXC. They seems to be more expensive, but if the performance is similar to regular MicroSD, what will be the advantage?
I think most any class 10 will provide similar results. There are some that guarantee certain speeds, and they may be better performers, but you'll often pay a bit more. The class refers to the speed, most manufacturers will report their best case scenarios to qualify for a higher class rating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speed_Class_Rating So you'll find some class 10's do out perform others and such.
SDXC just refers to the capacity the cards can support. I believe SDXC supports up to 2tb vs SDHC is up to 32gb. (there are other technical factors too)
Just be sure that it is indeed a MicroSD card, and not just a normal SD card.

Not sure if anyone is still looking at this thread, but I just did this test on my phone with my 32gig Samsung Essential MicroSD card. I've owned it for a couple months now and as far as I can tell it's been rock solid.
Read speed was 9.7mbps
Wtite speed was 22.4mbps
Best part, it was only like $30 on NewEgg. Great deal for a class 10 card.
Not to further complicate things. There is another notable rating
Class 10 UHS-1
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-micro...DSDQUA-032G-U46A/dp/B007XZM6VG/ref=pd_cp_pc_1
Class 10 SDHC
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Mobil...51467765&sr=1-3&keywords=class+10+micro+sd+64
Pay close attention to the little symbol that indicates its rating. Don't be fooled by a lower value. The shape around it indicates a type.
So whats the deal? I have an answer for you. This ever confusing class and rating jargon can best be cleared up from the horses mouth.
Behold the SD Association and its wonderfully CLEAR explanation.
Yup its real. They are responsible for a great many things in the memory world. They even have provided all of us with the best SD format tool we can get our hands on for free. Because they know there SD stuff that's why!
So back to the ratings. I personally have not ever tested a UHS class SD in our device or any other phone for that matter. Based on this quote "UHS (Ultra High Speed), the fastest performance category available today, defines bus-interface speeds up to 312 Megabytes per second for greater device performance. It is available on SDXC and SDHC memory cards and devices." I would love to know if anyone has successfully used one.

Careful with the SanDisk UH devices... My 32gb SanDisk UH-1, bought from amazon and in retail packaging, was a pain in my Note from day one. The problem got worse over time... at first i thought it was just JB roms, not hardware. It constantly caused reboots, would unmount itself, and was slow, no matter which ROM was installed. After 3 months, it died last week... it mounts/dismounts every second it seem, even in my Mac or PC. Put in for an RMA with SanDisk... we'll see how that goes.

It got 13.3 write /20 read
I'm consistently getting 8 MB/s Write and 35 MB/s Read in SD Tools. That read speed seems crazy-high for such an old card. I'm using a Class 6 A-Data card that I originally bought for my HTC Magic over 3 years ago. Not sure if it's random or sequential, though. I imagine that random is much more important wrt apparent speed browsing through things like photo albums and music folders.
EDIT: haha, OK so apparently you have to go into the root of your external SD card to get actual results. 8/18 on the AData
Last year SanDisk said (source: can't find it again) to expect 128GB microSDXC cards by the end of Q3 2013 (september), but, we're... still... waiting. I wonder what the holdup is?
As soon as they're spotted in the wild, I'll be buying one on day1 for the expected ~$100 asking price, which'll bring my total Note3 capacity up to 192GB(!). Also never had a corrupted card issue from SanDisk, unlike some others, so no qualms there.
And before anyone asks: Yes, 128GB is compatible with the Note3, even though the specs says only 64GB is supported. They always do that. the microSDXC spec actually supports up to 2TB, and there's no reason why the phone shouldn't be able address up to 2TB in hardware or software.

Ouch So you got yours in November of 2011 and paid the high early adopter tax.
I didn't have a SDXC capable phone until I picked up my S3 in June 2012, and only paid... $64.49 for my 64GB sandisk off of Ebay via China. Was a good deal at the time, as the price averaged higher for a few months following as demand for SDXC picked up (thanks to S3 sales).
I'm hoping the 128GB sdxc won't be so obscenely overpriced at launch.
I paid over $100 for a class 10 32GB. A year or so later they are less than half that. lol. O well, I wanted fast speeds and I got it. I just paid a hell of a lot of money at the time to get it (compared to what they cost now).

I am definitely interested. Building up a big library of stuff on my current 64GB and wondering how that is going to continue working for me... Especially since we are all stuck with 32GB of memory instead of the option for more... What about the other card providers?
Isn't $200 for 128GB a huge ripoff?
Considering you have high Performance SSDS with longer durability AND built-in controllers with cache for nearly 50 cents per gig.
And how much larger are those SSDs than a microSD card?

Weird. My 64GB Sandisk has been working just fine for the last year and half, in a S3 and Note3. It's formatted Fat32 instead of exFAT, though, due to early compatibility issues with ROMs and recoveries. Will be reformatting as either exFAT or ext4 depending on when CM10 for the Note3 is ready.

have you even seen the inside of an SSD? Hint: Mostly empty space. The actual Memory chip is about the same size.
They just omit the extra high performance components (Like cache, controllers) on Micro SD packages.
Instead of putting in ONE big capacity chip = SLOW , they put a couple smaller chips So they can work FASTER in parallel
Same flash Memory technology , less Side components = more $?

I have the exact SanDisk card you have in your picture (64GB) and started using it in my S3, now have it in my Note 3. It has always worked perfectly. These caveats may be what helped achieve this success:
1. Never reformatted the card.
2. Never rooted either phone
3. Never took the card out unless the phone had finished turning off and was unplugged.
4. Never took the card out of the reader on my PC unless I first went into windows explorer and first selected "eject" for that drive letter, and waited until the message popped up on the desktop saying it was OK to disconnect that drive.

You serious? Those chips are usually 8/16/32gigs and they're bigger and thicker though not a lot. Yes, you're right they work in parallel, but they need ram, controllers and a lot more energy to work how they do and how fast. Shrinking 128gb to micro SD size is probably secondary to getting it to work reliably.

That's what I Mean, SD Cards have less Components but higher cost.
BTW, sdcards have internal controllers just lower performance Ones.
Hard to believe the cost of minutarizaton (which usually brings costs DOWN) is higher than the cost of enhanced performance .
Should at least balance out.
Any update on the 128GB micro-sdxc?
Can't find anything yet. Did SanDisk get sent back to the drawing board?

I have found this on Amazon... seems to cheap to be true but I was thinking of giving it a go. I can't post links as I'm a new user but just search amazon uk for samsung 128gb micro sd.
What are your thoughts?
Hopefully not this one.

Hi all,
I have the 10.1 2014 tab pro and I want to get a new SD card. I know from my brief reading through these forums that not all SD cards will work and I dont know enough to really understand what is what (like what does "SDHC Tf Class 10" mean?). If anyone knows what it is that I need to look for before buying one so that it will work fine with my tablet please post here.
ps I am using these primarily to store books and documents, not videos or games or anything that really takes a massive workload or speed requirement.
pps Im not sure if this matters, but I am running stock unrooted
TIA
Most any newly purchased MicroSD card should do. What did you read won't work? Below Class 10 cards might not work for some high speed functions (like video), but I believe all should work for casual use like you describe.
SDHC versus SDXC mainly refers to the capacity of the card, which you are probably going to be looking at separately (in GB) anyway, so it really doesn't matter. Basically, the original SD standard (also called SDSC) was limited to 2 (4?) GB. SDHC increased the capacity up to 32 GB, and anything higher than that is SDXC by definition. There are some other minor differences, but probably nothing you really need to worry much about.
Class (8, 10, etc.) refers to the read/write speed; but you may also see a UHS speed classification (U1, U3) also. Even though you are not talking about high speed demand tasks, I'd still tend toward Class 10 or U1 cards. Just in case you change your mind about what you want to save to the card; and many cards meet Class 10 or U1, anyway. For the few cards that you can find with lower speed class, you might save $10, so its probably not even worth it to consider lower speed class cards.
The following Wiki articles goes into a lot more detail about the specs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
Out of all this, I'd be more worried about brand, or getting a counterfeit product. Some cheap or off-brand cards seem to fail more frequently than the big names. Folks all have their favorites, and may argue that you are just paying more for the brand. But I've bought several Sandisk cards, and never had any issues (and heard similar from other users on XDA).
I'd also stick to a reputable seller (Newegg, Amazon, etc.) as places like eBay are awash with counterfeit SD cards. Its so easy to relabel a card as a higher capacity (i. e. take a 32 GB card and label it as 128 GB, etc.) and even spoof the device to read it as the "fake" capacity, than charge much more $$$.
I am using one of these on my TabPRO:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MicroSDHC-Memory-without-adapter/dp/B00AYC6V2U
Works fine on all my Android devices.
And to really leverage it outside of Google Apps and pre-installed items you need to root and enable write to the SD card, unfortunately. (Unless I'm missing something.)
Thanks, I really appreciate that info on what all those terms mean. However, right now I am using a 32gb Sandisk ultra, and my data keeps getting corrupted, apps cant find it, showing up empty on every file explorer I try.... Therefore I thought since Sandisk is legit (I bought it at costco so its real Sandisk) I figured there must be some issue with the type of card.

I had similar issues with a genuine SanDisk card in my S3 (couldn't access it in recovery either), just showed a bunch random characters instead of file names etc), swapped it to a different brand (I got a genuine Sammy one because it was a bargain at the time) and that solved the problem....
So what micro sdcards are people using as i need a new one want 32GB at least. Does it support 64? Preferably an amazon link!
link below, you can go 64gb or 128gb if you like. on 4.4.2 you might have to do the KK SDcard fix, which is simply editing a file in permissions and allowing RW access to the sd card. Might be the same for Lollipop, but I'm not there yet on my phone.
One thing I did find is that I get lag if I stick loads of music on there and use the stock app, so I use rocket player as it handles that better.

I think I read somewhere that the G3 actually supported up to 3TB SD cards ! (And yes, I know there's no card that big, but it just means it works ! )
Just get any class 10 sd card.

I can finally explore some 4k recording.
Sdcards for LG G3
In most regions the LG G3 comes with a hearty 32GB of internal storage, leaving nearly 25GB for you to use as you wish. As is often the case, one size never fits everyone — and if you need more than 32GB in your mobile device, you'll have to resort to using an external SD card to expand it. The LG G3's MicroSD card slot supports up to 128GB cards, giving you more room than you'd likely ever be able to fill.

But, could You refer me or explain, what can / can't I put on the card in my LG D858hk, with 4.4.2. Android. What can I do on stock LG Android, and what with rooting ?
Also, recommend some good quality 32gb at least , preferably 64gb ... since I am a massive hoarder of music etc.

Can't say how it might work with stock, I am Rooted and booted using Cyanogenmod 12 by Manupse. No complaints.

From what I understand, the Samsung Pro cards are great. The one you posted is the last generation one. The current one is rated at up to 90MBps read and up to 50MBps write, and isn't that much more at $59.99.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Class-Adapter-MB-MG64DA-AM/dp/B00IVPU88U
This being said, people tend to prefer the Samsung EVO cards for phone use. They're substantially less expensive ($35.79 shipped):
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Class-Adapter-MB-MP64DA-AM/dp/B00IVPU7AO
The reason people tend to prefer the less expensive EVO cards is their faster 4k random read/write speeds, which is arguably the most important aspect for phone use.
Here's the 64GB Samsung EVO micro SD:
Here's the 64GB Samsung Pro micro SD:
If you're using it in a camera, 4k camcorder, or transferring big files, I can see preferring the Pro. Then again, you can get the very similar PNY Turbo 64GB card (up to 90MBps read) for $27.99 shipped right now, which is less than 1/2 the price.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9151773
So I've ordered the Samsung micro SD card Pro plus 64GB. It's Samsungs flagship model. This card supports read speeds up to 95MB/s and write speeds up to 90MB/s. But judging by my results I'm not getting near those speeds.

What cards are you guys using and what speeds are you getting with "A1 SD Bench" app?

I tried today a Transcend Ultimate 64GB 633x with Up to 95MBs Read and 85MB/s write.
I got 42,91MB/s Read and 28,65MB/s Write... quiet bad in my opinion
I have the same Samsung Pro+ 64gb card and I am not getting anywhere near as advertised either. My read/write speeds are similar to yours.
Do you think this would be due to only 2gb of RAM?

Those speed have nothing to do with RAM. If I were to make an educated guess, the speed depends on the microSD-Card reader and/or the chipset.
I think it's a bit over-simplified to talk about microsdxc speeds without any further qualifications. The manufacturer-advertised speeds are only achievable under ideal conditions (sequential as opposed to random access, specific file size etc.) If the benchmark you're running is different from the one the manufacturer ran, you may measure much lower speeds.
I'm not saying I'm positive the SoC/SD card reader in the Z5C isn't the bottleneck, I'm not sure. My point is that micoSDXC cards are much slower than advertised in real-world scenarios (and realistic benchmarks), even when using them via a super-fast card reader such as a Kingston USB 3.0 FCR-HS4 and a high-endish desktop PC.

I can support dafie's scepsis. My last mircoSD class10 card from Transcend had advertised Speeds of 60mb/s read and 20mb/s write, but actually performed only about 50mb/s read (which is okay to me) and 9-11 mb/s write (which I find very lackluster). I tested this on several card readers (Xperia Z3C, Macbook Air, USB2.0-Adapter on a Windows PC).
@Mythos123 So if you want to know wether the limitation lies within the phone or the sd card I suggest you test it on an integrated sd card reader on a modern laptop or a dedicated usb 3.0 card reader at any decent pc.

Unfortunately my laptop is really old, so I can't compare speeds.
By the power of Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
This is disconcerting because if you look through the amazon-reviews you will also find benchmarks made on android which confirm the speeds that are advertised.
I'm currently using an older 128GB card with only 30MBs/10MBs and was considering an update, but i guess i'm less motivated to do so now.
Did you try with another software?
I've an old "SanDisk ULTRA 64GB" and the results (with that app) are:
Read: 36.17MB/s
Write: 12.15MB/s
I'd like a faster SD capable of write at 70MB/s+ isn't that possible in the Z5 Compact? (If I move games, like Hearthstone from Internal Memory to External Memory they are really slow).
@Mythos123
I just bought one Samsung Pro+ 32GB..
Write speed can't pass 21MB/s with that bench app.
I think we have a very slow card reader or some kind of bug. (Yours write a 36MB/s at least).
EDIT:
- I formated the 32GB SD from FAT32 to exFAT (because Android formatted it as FAT32).
- If I do this test (with this app) many times in a row (using the quick test), write speed raises up to 35-37MB/s, so I think sdcards tests don't work fine at the moment, and...37MB/s is the peak for our card reader.+
- The sequential write speed using USB cable (and USB 3.0 port just in case is above 30MB/s and supported by the Xperia) is 20MB/s approximately. (Copied a .MKV of 15700MB in 13.5 minutes).
So, in summary:
Max sequential write speed achieved with an app: 37MB/s
Max sequential write speed achieved with USB and MTP protocol: 20MB/s.
Such a pitty, Smart phones are in many ways still way way behind desktop and laptop solutions..
I suppose to really compare, you'd have to find a benchmark test on an review. Then use the exact same software and test it on the Sony. Repeating the test as closely as you can.
I've got a 64gb card now (samsung pro) also. I've been thinking about upgrading to a 128GB or 200GB. Has anyone tried getting a larger card? or are those all slower. (I want to carry a copy of all my photos around with me rather than use up precious data whenever I want to look at one)

Sandisk Extreme microSD(mid class), no need Extreme Pro(high-end). If you want Samsung, you will still to buy EVO Pro as the entry level of EVO Plus got only 20MB/s write. Samsung and Toshiba seems no medium classes.
I previously own m4 aqua, and i have sandisk extreme
I got 42MB/s read and 36MB/s write on m4 aqua
The card is advertised as 60MB/s read and 40MB/s write speed and displays the UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) designation
I never do benchmark again after switch to z5 compact, but I think the result will be same

There is no any consumer level of DSLR/phone reached [email protected] yet but a higher speed card is always help because probably it takes a shorter time to writing data and hence, reduced heat and save battery. Take a example, 200MB for a 20MB/s card spend 10s while only 5s needed for a 40MB/s card and you saved battery for that 5 seconds and generated smaller heat as well.

Modern entry level card got a much faster speed usually has 15~20MB/s write and very valuable. In the old day slow card is real slow with just 4~8MB/s writing speed.
