[Q] Swap memory/partition doubt and help!!! - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

my device is LWW running PACman 4.3:laugh: and m using transcend 32GB micro sd class 4....but i am unable to play high end graphic games wich take a lot of RAM like asphalt 8 etc...they lag lyk hell and then exit and come back to homescreen:crying:
so i created a SWAP partition of 500MB using minitool partition wizard..
now i hav two doubts:
( M SORRY BUT BELIEVE ME I HAV DONE MAX SEARCHING OF THIS TOPIC ON GOOGLE AS WELL AS ON XDA...ALL I GOT WAS...CONFUSED )
1. wich one is better.. creating dedicated SWAP partition (lyk i hav done) or using apps lyk swapper wich create a swap file somewhere on the SD card or are they both the same??wich one do you recommend??... do both the above methods damage sdcard?? Also is the damage to the sdcard in the long run more in one of the cases or both are equally same??
2. is just a clarification sounds a bit n00bish:silly: too...after creating a swap partition on sdcard (as i hav done), is using third party apps lyk swapper the only way for the device to detect the created swap partition or is there any other way???if so pls tell me..
once again m sorry for creating a new thread...but i did a lotta search and i only got confused...also if i hav missed out any guide on using swap partition..pls link me to it...
thank u

dont worry bro your right here :good: its the help thread 1st i dont have uch xperience with swap as i never used it bcuz i dindt see a big ''diffrence''
but some things to swap: class 4 is bit low for swap recommended is class 6 or better 8. AFAIK swap partition can more likely damage our sd (this CAN happen, when sth went wrong, but usally it DONT DOES (damage on sd) !!) apps for swap are sver but make sure u have enabled save remount feature. also important if u set PARTION swap u must set it too in an app like swapper2 to use it.. (choose there swap on partition) also swap is a tricky thing more means not better, lokk if u have big swap and swappiness (how much to swap ) this means work for the cpu - more work for cpu means lag. same for size more isnt allways better. u must find the middle for a happy cpu and bit more ram, but there isnt ''THE SOLUTION'' i faced it works diffrent from ICS-JB-STOCK etc., even depends on roms and which tweaks it uses.. (i mean if it uses zram its now double the work for cpu ) also important is a fast r/w speed for sd if its to low it stucks on , means lag for u. (thats why a class 6+ card are recommended)
for game:
i mean the best u can do is to use a clean rom without much junk, also installing 2 or more tweakpacks NOT MEANS system runs better. so take it light other tipps to game:
- set background processe to 4 or 2 or evon 0.
- fligtmode on
- kill all apps bfore start play
- dont overclock as much ucan ( it donsent mean it will run smoother, if cpu is overworked it will simly lag.)
- use gpu rendering.
DONT use taskillers!! (these are only work for system and battery eaters)
- set good and fast govenor, and i/o scheduler when u can, search for a good kernel for game as it will offer u best peformace increase.
hope it helped u a bit

thnx for replyin man...you cleared my mind a bit...:good:
i know class 4 is a bit slow...but now after enabling swap i am able to run asphalt 8 with very little (negligible) lag...
but i dont understand by what u mean "enable save remount feature"??
also what u mean by this

i wil try ur gaming tips...
but i dont know much about governors and i/o schedulers...i'll read and find out..but do they actually make a difference??
and can u link me to any performance tweak threads??i too wil try nd search..:fingers-crossed:
also by ur statement u mean that enabling Zram is of no use??:silly:
yup i agree with u..i too hate task killers...
nd i dont want to risk damaging my phone so i dont overclock

no prob bro :good: yes u must find a middle of use swap but not to much as it will slow down cpu (and whole device)
"enable save remount feature" -> use swapper2 app (free) then go first into settings and set if U USE a spap file (on sd) OR if u USE partition on sd (have to be set to in advaced options.) i mean with this if u see there options they are (called) like this ENABLE IT. ist much safer., alos dont set the swappiness to high
go to settings, performance. there u will have some govenors to choose. govenors are like people thery lazy one may good for battery or there stressy one which give u more performance on battery cost and so on read more about them here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017715 there really important for gaming as they decide how ur system & cpu.. behavs if its called by an app for power like ur game (make a BIG diffrence) i/o schedulers are sth other but think there only avaiable from JB...
also tell me which rom u have!!!! (stock or not etc.)
to zram: zram are compressed stuff to have bit more ram, but it means also more work (ALL TIME) for ur cpu as he have to copres and decopress files bfore placing/ calling from RAM, and when u use SWAP, zram is useless. as its only for low memory devices which sometimes need more ram i especially didnt use it as my ra is okay and it will only eat cpu & battery, i would say in your case u get performance LOSS as of using bith a same time , as said bfore SWAP means mor cpu work too, then imagne cpu must also handle the zram, + game and system, it CANT BE GOOD! and btw a good (best for game) kernel will gie you more boost than all the mentioned things here bcuz hes the most responsible for calling the hw. (if game needs juice )
overclock is okay but i would not more oc than to 1.1 Ghz or 1.2 this is okay btw i use also 1ghz for normal use
with tweks i mean do some build prop tweaks (i would advice do only some not allways all, bcuz more means not everytime better as u know)
than dont use ''lock home in memeory'' and delete ram scripts from init.d folder in system/etc
set a good sd write read speed using some market app. like 1024 or 2048.
a good thread for some tweaks is '' project fluid'' by spex :good: its simple and well working on mostly all roms aslo it contains a tweaked adreno config..
just try some bit around, and tell me which rom
peace

Okay sry bro was in a hurry so excuse bad englisch bfore, let stake it short
Use only swap no zram, allow the system to give RAM, use sio as io sheduler, as govenor for perfirmace use interactive, smartassh3, or performance this will kepp cpu at highest value.
If u want attach ur build.prop and i take a look for u.
Checks init.ds. And suoercharger makes gaming not good...
Did u use greenify,bro?
Also sry for not recognizibg that u mentiond rom,sry..

I doubt swap will help ...
Mostly it will crash again even with swap ....
Post the logcat when you play the game and it crashes... We will see what happened ...

[Q]Tips to speed up Archos?

Hi All,
Share your tips here for boost up your Archos,
Anyone use extra SWAP instead of official one (64M)?
I will use 512MB for SWAP in /data/swap512 and custom /data/local.prop to enhance my Archos, but it seems not enough.
Update: 14-07-2011
My Archos seems faster than before since I've installed:
1. Sysctl Config
2. Spare Parts 4
in Sysctl Config, I use belowsetting:
min free kbytes: 32568
dirty ratio: 5
dirty background ratio: 3
vfs cache pressure: 1
Oom allocating task: Enabled
also I ticked compcache in Spare Parts then Reboot.
*I think Swap and Compcache can not be turn on in same time since I type 'free' in terminal and there is no swap memory anymore.
please share yours here.
Cheers!
Leo
I'll be honest and say that my Archos 70 is running like my Nexus S, it's mental man, I can't believe I'm using the Archos, I've got no lag, it's super fast, looks good, no hicups, and thats after finding scripts, build, local.prop tweaks, sysctl.conf tweaks, android tweaks, ALL of which I found here, just search for build.prop tweaks, or sysctl tweaks and you'll find them,
You need ROOT by the way
@LeoNg628:
What do you think you want to do that would need 512MB swap?
What is slow/laggy?
If Uruk is slow and laggy, you are doing something serious wrong.
You do understand that the archos is not the replacement for a quadcore gaming computer?

I am just curious and looking for some tweaks to boost up my Archos more than now.
I've installed UD 1.1rc once, but I think Custom ROM is not yet suitable for my Archos since my Archos 70IT is A70H, which is a HDD version.
If I install the UD into my Archos, it will automatically installed into my HDD and it will cause the battery drain quickly and not usable...T^T
Therefore, I am already give up on SWAP 512, because it make my Archos very unstable and reboot sometimes....
So, I just open a thread for our Archos user to share their great info here and let us discuss here...
btw, do you have any idea to boost up the official FW?
(I'm using 2.3.81 with rw Root)

Does the Multiboot work on the 70H?
If it works, that gives a boost allready because it has a compcache and some other tweaks.
It also comes with root and an union fs that lets you change the system files of the std android.

I do use this script, and I can say that it is a success!
1.0.2 Using the MiniCM6 Nobodyatall!
One of the best roms in Big X10 xda land "Wolfbreaks" uses this.
I hope the roms here start using it... It rapes!
I must say.. this is works very well on my mini with MiniCM 2.0.5 GingerBread
Before: Active launcher and Zeam launcher is redraw everytime I finish to play NFS Shift or even after I open Application manager
After: No redraw (Active Launcher and Zeam) when finished playing Angry Birds, NFS Shift and other RAM eater games
Great ..
So I tried this script, and now my launcher is hard to kill / supercharged
but then after reboot it still says my launcher is hard to kill, but also that my prior minfrees don't match my current minfrees.
it then shows my curent minfrees as the default minfrees and the prior as what i selected. is that supposed to happen?
I mean exactly as the screenshot moedjs posted
like isn't it supposed to set current minfrees to what i selected, and not to default?

Exactly.. makes multi tasking rock.. keeps the memory free, locks in the home app.
It works badass!
I did not understand the installation
ops , I did find a help, sorry
hey guys, does this works in SE android firmware 2.1?
Another question, in a tutorial it says :
P.S. When Installing Programs, MAKE SURE Script Manager are installed on PHONE and NOT in the MicroSD Card!
I have app2sd installed already , how can I do this? thanks
can someone who tried this give his values and his results?
sounds like a great tool
thnx in advance
I have the same problem as Carpe-Dimi above regarding new minfrees not sticking after reboot, although the Launcher is "Hard to kill".
I used option 6 in the script set up.
I followed help file advice to have Script Manager run /system/etc/init.d/99SuperCharger "at boot" and "as root" but problem persists.
Otherwise seems to work fine at keeping launcher in memory. I don't see any boost in Quadrant Score... or any other noticeable improvements to be honest.
MiniCM 7 is pretty good as it is
Any advice on settings or getting minfrees to stick?
Anyone know if it works on mini pro?
That number 1-17 is best for my phone?

there are config files in the ramdisk.tar (can't remember name atm, but they are init.rc files) that have lines regarding the setting of ram optimizations.
however. these are definatley meant to do the same as the script, but the values in them don't correspond to the ones the script readsout, so I'm thinking another script runs on top of that which overrides those values again.
that's just a theory tho, since I can't edit the ramdisk file as I dunno how to set the permissions back when unpacking and repacking ramdisk.tar but I'll get back when I find out.
as for the launcher being bulletproof, that definately makes the home button respond a lot faster ^^

Somewhere in the original post it says that in some Custom Roms the minfrees won't stay after reboot so you HAVE TO select 'run at boot' for it to stay.
edit: From original post:
Note: For some reason, the minfree levels do not stick on some Custom ROMs. I don't know why this is. Maybe a bug in GingerBread?
........ You can check /res/user.log to see if it ran...
........ If this happens to you, use Script Manager to load /system/etc/init.d/99SuperCharger "on boot" and "run as root"
And I also have a question(just like the one 2 above)
What is the best one to choose (1-17)?
ThankYou
I tried:
'........ If this happens to you, use Script Manager to load /system/etc/init.d/99SuperCharger "on boot" and "run as root"'
and still could not get values to stick
Has anyone else tried this and had more luck?
how do you install this.. i could not understand

u r correct...the memory free settings are modified by some file not located in ram disk...i have examined the init.rc files and ramdisk settings are quiet different form the one that is set in the roms during runtime
now only if v knew what that file was!!!
The values are not equal with me, but I noticed a big improvement!
I am using the following values in the original 6,8,16,20,22,60 MiniCM6 Froyo!
It must have some kind of file it impossible values are equal, but it works it works!
I have done for mine and is awesome...

Swapper Configuration? :-D Do you mean by any chance the app "Swapper"? Because I can't find any "swapper configuration" app anywhere...
Btw..: after enabling swap file with swapper I'm still unable to see any free swap memory within the terminal (free shows still 0 swap)
Although - it seems my phone is working better now... Placebo?

I am not the expert in these things. After installing swapper and enabling swap on the sd-card, my phone became very responsive. On clicking home button, main screen with widgets and icons appears instantly, no matter in which program or apps I am in. So I guess it did made the phone faster and responsive.

To my mind it's placebo effect - I've tested it and can't find any proof of SWAP enabled!

How to autorun swap Xperia Ray?

I have created a 1 GB a2sd partition in CWM, works perfect! Every app is on sd-card. In the same menu in CWM there was an option to create a swap partition, so I created a 256 MB partition. After reboot I checked in terminal if swap worked. Typed "su" followed by "free", swap showed 0 0 0... But then I found an app in Google Play named "ResetSwap" where I can turn swap partition on/off. When I check in terminal it works great! The "problem" is that every time I reboot I have to manually turn swap on in ResetSwap. Is there a way to make the swap partition autostart after boot??
Thanks in advance!

U need another kernel rather than the official one
Hi there
what u need is to flash a kernel support swap function which the official doesn' t.
swap needs kernel support to work.
AND flash unofficial kernel means U need get ur bootloader unlocked.
If that's what u don't want , then give up.
if not there are instructions on this forum, just follow it.
In my opinion, if u don't play huge game ,ray's 512 ram is just enough for daily surf and simply work.
Hi!
Thank you for answering. My bootloader is unlocked, I'm running Sirkay v.6 @ 1,6 Ghz. Rooted + supercharged. The stock Xperia Home is freezed in Titanium Backup, I only use Launcher Pro. I have got the swap partition to work, only it doesn't start automatically when boot. It has to be done manually. I want it to start automatically. But I have found that there's use for the swap. I have lots of apps that together eats a lot of ram. Generally I have about 50-60 MB of free ram and the system also uses about 120-150 MB of the swap partition! I know the SD-card isn't as fast as the ram, but I don't see any difference when using it. Its an Samsung 32 GB class 10. Before I created the swap partition I got lot of crashes from several apps, I guess it ran out of ram. Maybe some say its not because of low ram that makes them crash, its because Launcher Pro isn't built for ICS. But I'm using the phone all the time, lots of multitasking. Have to charge the battery at least 2 times every day. So I'm pretty sure the swap file is working great, I get no crashes with the swap enabled. But I do get them without, several times every day. But basically, I just wanted to know if its possible to autostart the swap-file.
Best regards!

open notepad or creat newfile with xplorer, name it swapper or what you like. type this command
#/system/bin/sh
swapon /dev/block/mmcblock0p3
save it and put it to /etc/init.d chmod it 777
hope it work for u
It's actually swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 not mmcblock0p3.

[Q] Question about zram and swap

Hi there, i already searched and i know what swap and zram are aswell their differences and all that... but what i want to know and i was unable to find is can i use both of them? I mean can i use hardswap with a partition of lets say 512 on a class 10 card and use zram at the same time? Will i have anymore benefits using both of them if i can or it will just slow down the device/doesnt bring any benefits at all using both?
I am asking because i am running omega 53v and yank55 kernel and in the kernel there both option, i am just wondering if it is worth enabling swap and zram or i have to choose 1 of them.
