[Q] CM10.2 + DorimanX - How to change the mDNIe profile now? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heya,
Just wondering how to change the mDNIe profile now that CM10.2 has had the individual device settings removed. Dorimanx has it set to dynamic, which is a bit too bright for my tastes. There are multiple options to tweak the colour with stweaks, however nothing to change the entire profile.
I cant find the mDNIe switcher apk anymore, and the soft tuner app no longer works. Does anyone have any information on how to manually change it back?
Thanks in advance!

I put the device settings apk from 4.2.2 back into 4.3, and used it. Worked fine for the touch keys, I guess it would for the mDNIE profile too. Check my past posts today and yesterday, I've posted it a couple times now. That's including the apk and how to launch it. I'm on mobile now so no link sorry.
The original time I posted it, I set it out with details, but the basic idea is to paste to system/app, set permissions, reboot, then use terminal Emulator to launch it. I posted the terminal code this morning or yesterday, can't remember. If you see the version which is only one line of code, make sure to type "su" & hit enter before typing the second line.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away

Script.

Thanks Hopper, you've solved my issue. For future sake in case anyone else finds the thread. Here's hopper's instructions plus a link to the apk.
Hopper8 said:
1. Download attached apk (I took it from Rootbox 4.2.2, but it works just the same on 4.3).
2. Paste it into /system/app, set permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot.
3. Enter terminal Emulator, and type:
Code:
su [enter]
am start -n com.cyanogenmod.settings.device/.DeviceSettings [enter]
(obviously don't type [enter], press the enter key....)
4. Device Settings will open up, set whatever you desire
Note: to re-open the app, you will have to do it throught Terminal Emulator again. There's no other way of launching it that I could find, even Titanium Backup doesn't recognise it as able to run.
Big thanks to Unisexist6969 and Markox89 for helping figure this out
Edit: most users of a launcher such as nova or similar should be able to add a homescreen shortcut using nova activities shortcut. Personally this doesn't work for me, I'm not sure why. The method above will work regardless of using a different launcher, or if someone (like myself) doesn't have the option to add a shortcut, or if they plain don't want a homescreen shortcut (also like myself).

Good man! Glad you found it & it worked

Morphello thanks for digging this up.
Hopper8, thanks for figuring this out.
I was able to use this on the Verizon Note 2 (sch-i605). I was a bit worried that it was specific to the Galaxy S II, and it may be...but it still worked.
Thanks again guys!

Which ROM are you running, and how did you get it to work on your VZW Note2?
I copied it it to /system/app and changed the permissions and rebooted, but when I run the commands in terminal emulator i get an error:
Error: Activity class {com.cyanogenmod.device/com.cyanogenmod.device.DeviceSettings} does not exist
I cannot find the activity shortcut in Nova either.
Thank you

I apologize for the VZW Note II turn this GS II thread has taken.
I didn't do anything special other than follow the instructions laid out by Hopper8. I'm using a PAC rom (pac_i605_4.3-build.1.RC_20130830-090438) I got from gchild320.

I followed exactly also, but I am using CM10.2 nightly...Good excuse to try another ROM though.
Oops, didn't realize I was hijacking, I will move this question to the VZW Note 2 section.

Asus Transformer Browser APK - Working Labs

here's asus's version of the browser apk.
you get the thumbscrolling and working labs.
you lose being able to back page from a flash site (takes about 4-6 quick backs to go back) and you lose some ua strings. only tablet, desktop and mobile-phone are available, so since you can't pick ipad some html5 sites won't stream right since they haven't added android tablet recognition.
back up your browser and browser.odex files.
would it be possible to come up with our own custom browser when source is released?
why dont you just use the one from your tablet?

missing labs option so no quick controls for those who may want it and missing thumb scroll bar.
No offense but you might wanna return your tablet then.. Which version do you have and why would you wanna lose those features??? Just saying..
Those are very nice features but not worth keeping a transformer or xoom over the tab 10.1.
I'm wondering though now that I'm rooted if I can just use this to replace the stock browser completely.
Woohooooo. Replaced the stock browser that came with it and installed this one into the system/app folder. Working great... man I missed my thumb controls. Moreso because of the fullscreen mode...I hated how the address bar took up so much real estate.
Nice!!! Congrats!! I'm glad it all worked out..

never said what features i want or don't want. what this is is an option for those who might want... options maybe.
What is the best way to go about installing this ?
@madsquabbles: If you have enough patience to read and write Dalvik bytecode, you can make your own mods to the Honeycomb browser today. I modded my Galaxy Tab 10.1's browser to use Duck Duck Go instead of Google as default search, and it works fine. (For the patch and helper scripts, see github/Sakurina/mitsuki. I'd link, but not enough posts for that yet.)
@xManMythLegend: Back up the browser, uninstall the browser using the commands from CyanogenMod's wiki (the "Make a barebones system" page linked on the front page), and then installing the apk should work via adb. If you don't uninstall the browser beforehand, you'll run into an inconsistent certificates error message.
The downside is that using a custom browser breaks delta updates such as the 3.1 update; it tries to modify the browser, can't find it, and bails out.
Thanks. Without root wasn't sure ...it'd been awhile

being that i want to make sure i stay rooted i'll only upgrade via custom roms or after root is found.
but thanks for the tip. i'd have quite a bit of learning to do in order to start playing with the code. maybe i'll dig around for the heck of it and see what samsung did to fix the back page button for flash sites.
i've got the xoom apk and gonna try that tonight and see what it offers.

Cant install this. Tried adb and terminal both telling me read only.
ADB finds device adb shell doesnt respond to remount
terminal just says read only file when i try to remove.+
Rooted earlier today , updated sdk. Any thoughts ?
i believe you have to type "adb remount" first then you can write to the system.
i use root explorer b/c is easier for and i don't have to use a pc.
here's the link for the xoom browser. i didn't get a chance to try it out yesterday.

I have not tried adb for quite some time so perhaps there is a problem with commands or the order I am trying. It always finds the device. Adb shell starts fine but fails on remount.
Root explorer also gave me read only but I was trying to replace the apk as I failed to uninstall per cyanogen wiki.
you have to click the r/o r/w button at the top in root expl (if this doesn't work then you're either not rooted, haven't installed su, or haven't given root expl su permissions). then rename your browser.apk to browser.apk.bak (or whatever) and same with the browser.odex. it's probably safer to back them up to you pc too.
then copy over the other browser.apk and fix the permissions.. forgot what it is, but it has to be the same as all the other apks 644 i think. reboot and launch the browser.

Noot Tablet - Easy root & Market on MAC (1 download, 1 script to run)

UPDATED 12/23
---------------------------
1) Added automatic fixing of devicemanager.apk sql databases to prevent OTA root (thanks for the SQL tweak suggestions, Indirect)
2) Added otaban.sh script for those who are already rooted and just want to tweak the sql databases (you will need to put your device back in USB debug mode)
3) Added getroot.sh to just dump the nook back in to rooted/adb mode
INSTRUCTIONS
(Please follow these to the letter; over 500 people have downloaded this script and very few have reported issues)
On the NOOK
Disconnect from USB
Factory restore & initial setup
Browse to this:
http://goo.gl/vTNpJ
Click on notifications center, wait for the file to finish downloading.
Press on downloaded go_launcher_ex_v2.66.apk file
Select Complete action using package installer
It should say "install blocked"
Press settings
Tick unknown sources (press ok)
Pick Development
Tick USB debugging (press ok)
Tick the other USB debugging further down
Untick Automount
Back/Back
Connect the Nook to the MAC. On the nook you should see "USB debugging connected" in notifications center
On the MAC
Download the nooktablet-mac-root-0.6.zip file from http://goo.gl/qyYDB
Open Terminal, and change in to the directory where the zip file was downloaded. Unzip and cd in to the directory created. EG:
Code:
[B]cd ~/Downloads
unzip nooktablet-mac-root-0.6.zip
cd nooktablet-mac-root-0.6[/B]
Start the rooting script:
Code:
[B]./go.sh[/B]
Sometimes adb doesn't wake up immediately. Just try go.sh again if it says it can't find your Nook and you are sure it's in debug mode and plugged in properly. Also don't connect via a USB Hub.
When the script is finished, it should say "Done. Unplug from USB now"
The Nook will reboot.
You are now rooted and the following is auto-installed for you
1) Go Launcher Ex (Rooted App Launch/Desktop)
2) Market Place (The Android "App Store")
3) Button Savior (adds tiny button on right of screen for nagivation home/back etc)
4) Home Catcher (makes 2 clicks of the Nook N bring up the new Launcher)
5) Nook Color App Menu (allows you to install sideloaded apps to the Nook home screen/Library)
6) Dolphin HD Browser (Replacement web browser)
In addition, some tweaks have been made to prevent OTA updates from working, preserving your root state.
trying this now..
thanks a lot! i spent 2 hours last night trying to get the other method working and it gave me the headache of the gods.
edit: that mediafire link is crawling for me (dl is at like .2kb/s) can anyone mirror it for others who may have similar issues?

Thanks for the tutorial. It works extremely well!
This worked great, thanks!
I had one minor glitch. I was doing this on an old MBP running Leopard and for whatever reason it wouldn't create the ~/.android directory when I ran the script.
I created the directory manually and re-ran the script and it worked perfectly! Thanks again!

Ah, I just looked at the script, I realized now I missed out the mkdir -p ~/.android in it, hence your issue. I will likely fix that and update the script/zip file when I get a minute.
I'm currently considering whether to make the script install busybox at the moment. I don't really need it myself, but I see other people might.
Part of the problem is that if I develop the script any further I ought to test it before releasing it... but I really don't want to keep re-rooting my nook. I want to actually use the damn thing!!

I totally get that. I had just gotten done side-loading tons of stuff and getting my launcher screens setup the way I wanted and then I saw your script and thought about it for a day before breaking down and wiping my NT and starting over.
It was worth it! Thanks again!
I'm confused... rooting on PC using other method didn't work for me and now I'm stumped on Mac as well.
This part stumped me:
unzip it
cd in to nooktablet-mac-root-0.4 directory
mkdir -p ~/.android
./go.sh
Can someone explain the steps in greater detail? I tried runing the adb fiel via terminal, it goes through the script but does nothing on installing files to the device.
Thanks.
Minor problems encountered
I followed the directions and it mostly worked. First, had the problem with the missing:
[ ! -d ~/.android ] && mkdir ~/.android
Then I wasn't sure about the step where it says to click on the golauncher icon in the notifier. I clicked on the LauncherPro.apk entry and choose the package installer. That seemed to work but I'm not sure that's what you meant.
Then found out I should have unplugged the USB cable before rebooting otherwise the launcher chooser is covered by some wrning message. (I can't remember the exact wording now.)
Installed Button Savior. Not sure what that does. I can't figure out where it's suppose to be on the screen.
And worst of all, LauncherPro keeps crashing on me, dumping me back into native Nook mode. That requires a reboot.
But despite all that, I'm happy and will now probably keep my NT.
Big thanks!!
Mike

Launcher: that's what I meant.
Unplug: if you dont before you reboot it probably wants to media sync
Button savior: installs a tiny button on the right of the screen. Gets you back/home
LAUNCHER: certain things crash for me. Cant change dock shortcuts for example
I'm sure this will all get smoother in time. Pretty good already though.

Thanks. I found the little tiny button savior icon while trying out an ssh client. It shows up well on a black background.
And that does make it real easy to get back and forth between Android and Nook. Thanks again for making this easy and the button savior recommendation.

Hey! Noob here. Thanks so much for this! Just have a few questions...is this a permanent fix? I currently have the amazon appstore, but not android, so is this going to be set up the same way (i.e. have to click search and then go launcher to find the apps)?
When I connect to my mac, the usb debugging prompt will come up right away (like the screen for file xfer normally does)?
After unzipping, are those instructions to enter into the mac's terminal command prompt? Sorry, that's where u lost me! Is "cd" short for something? Thanks again for your help. Just want to make sure I do this right the first time. I think swype is the first thing I will install. Hating this keyboard!!!
First, I want to openly thank t-r-i-c-k for this. Even with little to no knowledge of this kind of stuff, after futzing with terminal for a while I got it to work in two tries. Finally, freedom from another lock-in service/device. But I am having a little glitch that I don't understand.
It's intermittent, but now and then I'm getting a crash on the launcher. It happens when trying to adjust settings/preferences. No big deal as it comes right back, and maybe its the app itself. Anyone else facing this?

I get an occasional crash but not as many as before.

[Q]

Hey everyone,
I'm a newb to android hacking (but fairly tech-savvy) but I was hoping someone could help me out with this. I'm running Bean's Revision 4 that I flashed with TWRP and everything is going swell except 1 small issue: I can't save any attachments that are sent to me via text message. I'm trying to save the photos of my niece and every time I do I get an error that says:
"/storage/sdcard0/DownloadIMG951035.jpg: open failed: EACCES (Permission Denied)"
I've searched quite a bit and found quite a few threads about permission issues and code that the people involved in the discussion claim can remedy the situation, but I don't know the first thing about how to run code on my Note 2. I've heard people mention running code in Terminal and I think I saw something about that in TWRP recovery, but can someone please help me out here. How do you run code on the Note 2? Does anyone happen to know what code I'd need to run to edit the permissions so I can save attachments from my text messaging app?
Thanks for any info!
P.S. Just realized I forgot a title for the thread... While we're in the helping spirit, anyone know how to edit a thread title AFTER posting?
You need to use a terminal emulator app, unless you have a recovery script. I prefer ConnectBot, but everyone has their own preference, I'm sure.
Make backups before you start running random code! What works for one person/phone/rom may not work for you.

OK, I actually found a terminal emulator app embedded in Bean's Revision 4 rom, but I don't suppose you (or anyone else for that matter) know what code I'd need to run in order to make this happen? I'd really like to have the ability to save attachments from text messages.

[Q] Attempt to get Advanced settings back in CM10.2

I have tried following these directions to temporarily get the Advanced menu back for the CM10.2 nightlies so I can enable dock audio. I keep getting the following error:
Error type 3
Error: Activity class {com.cyanogenmod.device/com.cyanogenmod.device.DeviceSettings} does not exist
It seems to work on other VZW Note 2 Android 4.3 based roms, but I cannot get it to work on our nightlies.
Is there an additional file or entry missing somewhere?
Thank you for any assistance.

Ok, for anyone who is missing the 'Device settings' or 'Advanced Settings' menu (since it was left out of CM10.2. See here for more details.) These settings include mDNIE screen settings and backlight control. I for one use them.
Anyway: To get these settings back, follow these steps.
I'm running the Eclipse ROM (which I believe is based off of CM 10.2), and I had this issue before I restarted the phone. After restarting, it fixed the problem. If this issue persists after restarting your phone, maybe someone else can chime in?
Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Rebooting didn't help, I am back on a TW ROM for the moment since I use my dock everyday, but plan on trying Eclipse or PAC this weekend.
Sbrissen said he is going to put the option back in the settings once they figure out where they want to put it, so I just keep flashing the nightlies every few days to check.
Thank you for your input though.

[Q][RESOLVED] Browser app settings and sync contacts

Hi ,
Yesterday, I installed ubuntu touch in my nexus 4 and decided to use it as my daily rom.
So, i tried to modify some settings. Everything is working well, however i have two problems.
The first one : I failed to synchronized contacts with syncevolutions. It's working but it synchronise only one or few contacs in my .csv file. As a solution i used google contacts sync. But if somebody have (or had) the same problem it can be interesting to share the solution with evryvody.
The second one : I tried to change the browser app settings, but it didn't work. I used these two websites to help me :
"bazaar.launchpad.net/~phablet-team/webbrowser-app/trunk/view/head:/README#L71" and
"lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-phone/msg10301.html" I removed the first part, because i'm not able to post outside links.
According to the first website, we can change the homepage and the searche engine, you can use the second website to understand how to do it, i followed the instructions, but it didn't work for me. So, if somebody want to try or already have the solution, it would be amazing.
Thanks.
Edit : Apparently It is now possible to change the search engine directly in the browser (18 June update)
Although it's about calendar sync, this might be helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ubuntu-touch/help/calendar-app-doesnt-sync-t3054933
What's the content of your browser settings files? I have that working fine for me here.
Code:
[email protected]:~$ cat ~/.config/webbrowser-app/settings.conf
homepage=https://duckduckgo.com
searchengine=duck
allowOpenInBackgroundTab=true
[email protected]:~$ cat ~/.local/share/webbrowser-app/searchengines/duck.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<OpenSearchDescription xmlns="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/">
<ShortName>Duck Search</ShortName>
<Description>Search Duck Duck Go</Description>
<Url type="text/html"
template="https://duckduckgo.com/?q={searchTerms}"/>
<AdultContent>false</AdultContent>
<Language>en-au</Language>
<OutputEncoding>UTF-8</OutputEncoding>
<InputEncoding>UTF-8</InputEncoding>
</OpenSearchDescription>
thank you for your answer,
so i only had some problems in my duck.xml files, and it is working now.:good:
Thanks for everything, it might help other people too.
PS: i don't know have to change the title to [SOLVED]
Great to hear that. I'm glad that it's working now.

The file and directory isn't created by default. You have to create it manually.
Btw, a settings UI is coming soon.
Thx

Ok, I thought I only had to modify an existent file
I'll try...

The file is automatically generated on devel-proposed build 166 now. However, it's called webbrowser-app.conf there.
If you're on the stable channel, expect that your browser settings will break in the future. However, you'll simply have to apply your changes to the new file then.
Hello,
I decided to install ubuntu touch again after all the new things they made.
However, changing the browser is no more working for.
I just wanted to know if there was another way to do it or if it was only my fault ?
Moreover, is that possible to uninstall preinstalled scopes like 7digital, amazon, ebay ... ?
@Remy.L There is just one browser for Ubuntu (except one third party browser). You can switch tabs by swiping up from the bottom edge though.
No, uninstalling preinstalled scopes isn't possible using the GUI as long as they aren't in the store.

Now I get what you mean with "changing the browser". There should be a settings option in the browser itself now (install the update from this week if you haven't already). Give it a try.
If there is still something you want to change manually, check out the contents of the browser's data directory. I think they renamed the settings file.

Sorry, i did not mean browser but search engine (replace google by duckduckgo).
I did not managed to have it working in the new version.
Anyway, do not bother you, i'm not using ubuntu touch anymore because i'm do not like that path they are taking with this OS (you can not uninstall what you do not want).
As i prefer to use open source software, the best thing to do now is to use an AOSP rom (or maybe firefox OS)
Thanks a lot for all your answers and have a nice day
PS: Sorry for my English, i'm not totally fluent
Edit : Apparently with the new version it is possible to change and chose the search engine you want.:good:
However, I guess that it is still impossible to remove unwanted stock scopes (however, as it is possible to remove unwanted stock apps, it may be possible to do it soon)

You could try removing them with the terminal-app like this:
Code:
sudo click unregister --user=phablet com.ubuntu.badscope
That should actually work. Pretty much everything can be uninstalled, even though not easily.

Ok tried to use this command, however if i want to uninstall amazon scope, it says to me that com.ubuntu.amazon does not exist.
Moreover it seems that we still cannot change the search engine directly in the browser ( I tried the devel/ubuntu version via Multirom)

You need to find out the right package name of the amazon scope (given that it is installed as a click package, of course; I was unable to find it using "click list").
The reason why you don't see the option to change the search engine is that the devel builds are really, really outdated. I think they are half a year old or something like that. Either install the stable channel or devel-proposed.
Ok, thank you for all your answers, it may help a lot of people
Unfortunatly I broker my Nexus 4 screen last week (I'm planning to repair it but not yet [in few month]) so i can not try this rom right now.
Once more, thanks again for your help and for your answers,
Have a nice day
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Did you know that the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition has just been released?

Hi nikwen,
I'm back on this forum because i repaired my nexus 4. Everything is now workinh, and the rom seems very nice.
However it is still impossible to uninstall unwanted scopes (like amazon) even with the terminal. (impossible to know the name of the scope).
I also tried this sudo dpkg --get-selections >liste but it does not list the scopes name.
Thank you for all your answers

Hi,
Yes, there's been a discussion about this on the ubuntu-phone mailing list recently. The reason why they can indeed not be uninstalled is that they are remote scopes with the code lying on a Canonical server and not on the device itself. I didn't follow the whole discussion, so if you are interested, check out the mailing list archive and you should be able to find the conversation within the first 5 pages.
Hi Nikwen,
So i checked your link and found what i needed
So yes, it is impossible to uninstall these scopes like you said, the only way is to keep it without using it.
But the thing i was thinking about is : If you do not use these scopes does it still get informations from you (in background) ? (because and do not want it to use my data continuously)
Sorry for all these questions
Have a nice day,
Remy
@Remy.L No, they won't be giving any information away. Scopes only run when they are in the foreground and even if they are, they are confined by a software called "apparmor", which means that they cannot access any data besides that which you enter into the search box. They don't have access to any of your private stuff.
