as a parent i had an idea for an app (if possible) for android.
there are lots of apps for toddlers and kids and most of them my wife and i actually use.
with one drawback. they dont lock. i wanted to ask the dev community if there was a possibilty of an app being made that allowed access to selected installed apps and kept a "lock" in place to keep kids in only what they need to be.

Check out kids place in the play store.
Pick the apps you want them to only see and pick a password.
You can lock the home button so it goes back to the kids place app.

Hi, So I bought an APP (legally) and so far I have been able to download it as soon as I flash a new rom.. (from market..not using any kind of backup prog)
My question is, am I going to be able to do this forever? Or will it, at some point tell me I have downloaded this app too many times or some other BS...
I ask this because my nephew has a (hrm pod) touch and obv. itunes...and he likes to mess around with it and jailbreak it and whatnot... and from what Ive seen, if he doesnt physically backup his apps/songs etc to the pc and then restore them back (godforbid the pc gets a virus and has to be re-formatted) he can't just go back intro itunes and look up his purchase history and re-install them on to his pod...
I've been using apps obtained via web/apk downloads...you know, to try them out...but there is only a few I actually use on a daily basis and would like to purchase them legally...however, again, I don't want to buy them and then a few rom flashes later be reading a message saying I have exceeded the ammount of downloads or whatever...
Please let me know what your experience has been..thanks!
I don't think there's a limit to how many times you can download it, as long as you're using your account to download it, you should be fine. But, don't take my word for that, I haven't flashed a million times to know if eventually there's a limit, but from my experience, there isn't.
Don't worry about it. There's no limit.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I have changed roms many many times and never had a problem getting back what I paid for
Isn't cloud purchasing amazing? Buy away!
some tips.
- be aware of the google account you're syced with. (no need to worry if you only have one account)
- to access your past purchases - go into market, hit settings, hit my apps, scroll down, and if you haven't installed them already, they will be under a section called "Not installed"
- free apps that you've purchased will NOT be on this list. You will just have to search it like normal. the market does not keep track of free apps that you've downloaded for you as far as i know. the app "app brain" will if i remember correctly. I don't use it personally.
- Also, as a side note, Apple does the same thing. if you've purchased from their store, you will have access to everything you've purchased (with money, not free apps) without backing it up to any hard drive.
- this is the cloud universe and this is how it works. welcome
It looks like you can re-download as many times as you want, but you may want to root your phone and backup your apps with Titanium backup anyway.
While Google may restore your Angry Birds app, it doesn't save your scores, or the fact that you successfully completed those 30 levels.
how do i know if the apps i download are safe? i mean anyone can write apps these days.

Check reviews in the market, check that the permissions make sense (a wallpaper app doesnt need sms or call permissions for example), only download app by known devs (recognised dev in the market).
Google the app name and see what people have to say.
If it looks iffy, dont download it.
Use common sense.
does the Market take the trouble to verify the apps before putting them on?

No.
You are expected to exercise common sense, not use pirated apps (huge source of crap), and generally be sensible.
The market can detect some malicious stuff, but if you steer clear of anything recently uploaded, with few users, you should be ok.
Just think of it like a pc. You don't have a nanny to hold your hand, so you use common sense

Whether they do or don't is irrelevant. Android's Market is not Apple's App Store, and probably never will be.
Veyka's advice holds true for Android/iOS and any other software, wherever you choose to place it.

There have been cases of malware sneaking onto the IOS app store as well, so its not like its even safe in apples walled garden!
fair enough
I downloaded an app called App quarantine from the market and put the following apps in the don't run bin , but before doing that I downloaded Go Launcher / Go Contacts / Go Sms Pro and did a ehh, conversion from the stock samsung apps to Go Stuff. Has anyone else done this or anything similar?
Apk's no longer running on boot

There are a number of apps that do the same type of thing, Titanium Backup will 'freeze' apps as well as a whole host of additional features.
Then of course, another option is to just rename the apps from *.apk to *.bpk and rebooting.
My personal preference is a third option called Autostarts which is similar to MSconfig in Windows but for Android. The reason being is, it gives you the ability to keep an app from ever running unless you actually tap the app to run it but still allows you to keep the app installed in the event you want to use it. Google Maps comes to mind, I want it installed, I dont want it running in the background.
I dont recommend removing any of the bloatware if you plan on staying on stock but, some of it for US Note users was able to be uninstalled without root via either Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All Applications, then tap an app and see if uninstall was lit up, if so, sweet. Or, alternatively you could go thru the Market->(Menu Key)->My Apps but not all apps show up in this list. As a side note, I actually manually did a search for many of the apps on the phone and manually updated them because they were not showing up in the market 'My Apps' list.
One other side note, most of the Samsung apps are actually pretty decent, I usually dont touch them. Its the ATT software and the apps ATT took bribe money from third parties that bothers me (Yellow Pages for example).
Oh, and a little known feature of Go Launcher is the ability to hide apps.
Tap the App drawer icon to get to the list of apps on your phone, tap the menu button, tap hide apps. For those of us that havent bothered to root, this at least gives you the ability to not have to look at apps you dont want to see in the app drawer.
Wow thank you for all the info. As far as staying stock, I like making my devices unique to me, I did keep all spen related apps, but killed pretty much everything else. I doubt my phone will ever see an official release of anything, Xda all the way

Just to add I guess a 'fourth' option, I like to use the app 'root toolbox' available on the market with both free and pro versions. Under the advanced menu you can remove any system apps you like but the nice thing is anything you remove is automatically backed up to the root toolbox folder on the internal sd. The backup is done automatically so you dont have to worry about removing something and forgetting to backup first and also gives you the option to restore any system apps you removed simply and easily. Ill be honest the restore feature has saved my bacon many times lol and is also a great way to experiment which apps are safe and unsafe to remove.
Hi folks,
I'm trying to figure out how to make Play Store require a password for all installations, even completely free ones. I've set mine to "Require Password for All Purchases" but it still allows installations of free apps. It equates "purchase" to money. What I want is to prevent my kids from downloading free stuff without my approval.
It amazes me that I've Googled around without finding some simple answer. I can't imagine my use case is very unusual. Preferably I'd also like to have the system email me when an app is installed (not just paid app "purchases") as an extra layer of monitoring.
Alternatively, is there some way to disable play store from being opened at all without a password?
Thanks! FWIW my kids' devices are on Jellybean... one is 4.2.2. and the other is 4.3.
Marc
There are apps in the play store that can lock other apps, hide them, etc... Search around, I'm sure you'll find something to suit your needs.
This one was the first result https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.domobile.applock

That looks like a good option. I'll d/l it and try it out. Thank you!
Thanks again Stryke! That app did the trick!
I set it to require a PIN for Play store as well as generally for Install/Remove apps. It has options to prevent force closing or messing with the app, should I need to do so. Perfect solution!
Marc
Cool, glad to help
I have a Revvl 6 5G with Android 12. Do you guys recommend any apps that I should first download? I'm going to be using this phone for school, gaming and just browsing apps like YouTube.
You should already have your list of apps you've already vetted, are known good and have an installable copy so you don't need Playstore.
Kept them on the SD card or a OTG flashstick with all your other critical data.
Keep trash apps, shopping apps and social media apps off the phone. They can cost you a reload or worse. If a site can't be logged onto and used through the browser, don't use it.
Load a secure browser like Brave. YouTube doesn't need to be loaded to watch, so don't.
Apps like Screen Test, SD Maid, DevChek and Accubattery are useful to have. Go through all your settings and familiarize yourself to them. Turn on Activate Developer options as well. Customize your UI; pick theme and icon pack if you have that option and wallpaper. Dark mode saves battery and is easier on the eyes.

Don't know what they are. I use whatever comes in handy. Read, learn, develop your own style and methodology but most of all play with it.
Stock Androids are almost impossible to crash and burn*... so play with it.
