Galaxy S III 4.3? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know or have a rough guestamate when they will be releasing the 4.3 update or in fact any update? Just i read a while back there was an update due, not official I think but we've had nothing for ages , im getting kinda bored.
I was in the o2 shop is Edinburgh the other day playing with the Galaxy Note 3, saying this is nice and quick and responsive, it had written next to it the samsung mega with no price or info, I'd never heard of so I checked system info and it said Galaxy Note 3, so I thought i'll get some coin together after a week or 2 and get one cos it was gonna be my next new phone anyway, I got home and checked every where online and they aint even released yet, in fact they don't even know the full spec of them, if i'd have know I would of stayed and dug out all the info, DAMN if I was on here more often I would of known.
I do remember it was on 4.2.2 and was really responsive but thats all, shame on me

No. Trust me, if any one of us knew, everyone would know. This forum would be flooded with info.

I read on google some were that 4.2.2 is defo scrapped for 4.3 and thats not coming out till early 2014. Little after the nexus5 comes out. Nexus should be out nov/dec time.

Yeah but it's all rumours and 95% of them turn out to not be true. We'll know when we know.

4.2.2 is binned. Networks have chosen to wait for 4.3

Not all S3's are tied to Networks, so it's not completely their call.
Edit> so what I am saying is even if "networks" are waiting for 4.3, it doesn't mean Samsung aren't releasing 4.2.2 - Many of our S3's get updates directly from sasmung. That's what owning an unbranded handset means. There's a leak of 4.2.2 so they definitely worked on it. They may indeed skip it but they have not officially announced that, ergo it is nothing more than a rumour.

When the big ones make there move the other follow. Orange and o2 run the uk. If they pick not to do something other follow them. As most piggy bk of them.

EE and O2 send out their own updates OTA. Unbranded handsets are network independent and get their updates directly from Samsung. Piggy-Back networks do not pass out OTA updates. All Piggy Back networks use unbranded, Samsung managed handsets. They have no choice in what happens.

So if your on giffgaff which is run on o2 you have it from sam and not o2?

Yep thats' right.
When you buy a phone from O2 directly, you get an O2 branded handset which recieves updates from O2.
If you buy a phone from Carphone warehouse on O2, it will be unbranded. Essentially, CPW will give you the exact same phone no matter what network you go with. Giff Gaff do not even supply phones so, chances are if you buy a handset from somewhere ( a shop) it will be unbranded.
On top of this, if you have an Orange phone on O2, it will still get updates from Orange. It doesn't matter what SIM card you have on the phone. It's to do with the software that's on the phone. If I put an O2 SIM in my Three phone, my updates will continue to come from Three.

So what happends if you change software. Were do you get it then? Nice info btw:thumbup:

Well I have over simplified it. It is more to do with the CSC set within the phone, but it is all part of the software none-the-less.
If you have an O2 branded phone (O2 CSC) and flash Three UK ROM (Official) you will then get your updates from Three. If you Flash UK Unbranded official (BTU CSC) you would get updates from Samsung.
However, if you are in the UK and flash an Indian official ROM (with Indian CSC) you are unlikely to get updates in the UK. KIES would recognise your CSC does not match your geographical area too, so it would refuse you updates. So As long as you Have an official ROM (CSC) from your country, you will get updates from that provided / Samsung.

Thank for that info mate. I learn some thing new every day. You full of good info. thanks to what you have put about the mg4 imei problem iv flashed neat 4.2.2 and yes I lost my imei but only for a few mins.

2.1 update options in new zealand?

Hi everyone,
I've got a gsm hero which is exactly as i bought it from an importer here in nz and i'd like to know what my options are for getting 2.1 on it?
baseband version 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22
build number 2.73.710.61
Running on vodafone NZ.
I suspect the phone was imported from Australia because the manual that came on the sd card was from australia but i can't be sure.
I've had a look around the forums but can't find any roms with the same build number as mine. so i'm not sure about using the wwe roms.
btw, I don't really care about rooting.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, if more details are needed just let me know
Thanks
I'm not sure but you can give this a try: set the date to July 10, 2010 then connect via wifi. That's what I did on my Asian Hero and it worked. Now I have 2.1
Also make sure that checking for firmwares is enabled in your setting.
im also from nz (and know two others with heros) and havent had any luck yet with the date tricks.

You need to find out what region your hero comes from.. check their htc support section to see if there are any downloadable updates you need to apply (sounds like there is) then once you have done that try the date trick again.
Sent from my HTC Hero
my build number is 2.73.707.9 thats for Singapore correct?

Some Singapore users are not getting the update yet even with the date trick, so you may have to wait a bit longer... or download the official ROMs and install via HTC sync:

I just used btdag's tut on rooting over the weekend and updated two hero's with the latest radios etc and all is well
Which carrier would you Kiwis recommend for use in NZ? I'm more interested in data than phone calls.
How long will you be here?
5 months 2 days!
There are very few options sadly, Vodafone NZ and Orcon (depending on your model of Hero you may be able to use Telecom NZ). I am currently on Vodafone NZ which have prepaid and post paid plans. No matter which plan you go on you can add 100mb for $10. Their "smartphone" specific plans can be found here but as you are only coming for a few months then it doesn't make sense. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/shop/plansOnAccount.jsp;ATG_SESSION_ID=pHs1MPnXQbn2zZJgplJjSvHbvtyHcQcTwy1wpPnpyv0d2NghpS4h!1018025480!2040597205?plantype=mobile&billingMethod=onAccount&planSegment=consumer&productGroupItemId=grp74400002&menuKey=mnit1400020
Your best bet may be to go with Orcon (they piggyback on Vodafone network anyway). Their prices are here http://www.orcon.net.nz/mobile/plans
Personally I'm on Vodafone and have a $30 + $10 (for 100mb) plan as i am near WiFi 90% of the time.
Let me know if you need anything else, like APN details and the like as the people in the stores don't know much at all!!
A brilliant, helpful reply thanks!

[Q] Has ANYBODY got 2.3.5 over kies?

Was just reading that orange branded phones are having 2.3.5 today (UK)
Anyone confirm that? I'm unbranded i would of though I would have it if they do
And yes I know I can root and do it myself, is Kies just rubbish at updating!?

I can confirm 2.3.5 for Orange, mine popped up yesterday
Samsung Kies informs me of 2.3.5 ( Middle Eastern XSG ) since a week but I don't use the stock ROM.
I got 2.3.5 KI4 trough KIES a long time ago (21.10.2011 judging by when i downloaded cf root for it) and i never had any problems with KIES, exept for it requiring 2gb on C drive ALWAYS -_-
I got KI8 2.3.5 through kies on Friday night in the uk

Exactly why I made the post I'm unbranded so one would think I would be one of the first, compared to branded headsets due to the carriers Modding the update.
I'm surprised so far it seems quite random
My phone is also an unbranded (pl plus early batch), so I'd say you got something weird

Updated my unbranded sg2 to ki4 via kies last sunday, and my sg1 to 2.3.5 as well via kies.Strange thing is lots of problems for the first time ever eith my sg1, but its now almost undistinguishable in speed to my sg2, which, by the way has hardly changed for the better exept for portrait video , worse wifi, phone signal, gps and loss of message skins . I wish I hadn't done it.
Had my phone about a week,
No update when i first got it,
installed a few roms etc etc... then went back to offical stock for uk three, and ki8 popped up.
Havnt taken the update yet, not sure if its even worth it atm and was a little unsure if i was ment to be offerd it, not heard off any other three users til now.
Three, vodafone and orange have updated their fw to 2.3.5 you will need to check what csc your phone by putting *#1234# into the dial pad, mine is xeu which is unbranded and still no updates yet.
Won't let me add screen capture to show my phone info.

Ok random isn't the right word... but i've never had a unbranded phone that recieved updates AFTER the carriers?
Like I said though, I could root if I was bothered, I'm just curious, and I would love to know what the hold up is
Sorry not able to edit my earlier post, but just got back from Scotland and checked my gs2 and its only 2.3.4, kies has written the information in a format I haven't seen before instead of the usual three entries, I have four all no gaps and smaller font and because of the mix of XX and XW I thought I had 2.3.5. Still wish I'd kept my earlier firmware though. Sorry if I gave any one false hopes.
Still no 2.3.5 official update over kies for Ukraine (SEK) ((, what do think guys, will it be soon?

How I wish that were true for everyone. My TMUK S3 shipped with the TMU variant of LE8 and doesn't have OTA enabled. I received LF2 (via KIES) the same day everyone was getting excited about the new features in LFB and haven't had a further update. So now I am three versions behind and who knows which update I will get out of the three that are now available. It seems incredibly inefficient to do carrier branded ROMS this way especially when TMU only had three differences I could detect: T-Mobile UK homepage as default on Internet, T-Mobile settings for data/MMS and removal of OTA. Hardly worth having a whole firmware stream for. I have Twitter following the SGS3 firmware update and the number of different ROMs that have to be supported is incredible. It's also weird that T-Mobile all across Europe have had LFB firmware updates but not a chirp from T-Mobile UK.

That sounds very plausible. The twitter stream I mentioned posted a link to the website where they get the firmware update data from. Depressingly most of the UK carrier firmware has not been updated since LF2. Frankly I'm amazed that Britain being a relatively big market has to wait so long for updates. I'm becoming increasingly tempted to flash the unbranded firmware and take the risk of voiding the warranty.

when i 1st got the galaxy s with T mobile there was such a **** up there boards was busting at the sides and it hit the news all over the world most of us got sick of it and went and Flashed our phones im not far from it my self but im not rushing with my new s3 but i still have my s1 that im using for Flashing
so what is the update that is about at the moment or are they waiting on jelly bean ????
Screw the warranty. If you wait for TMUK, you'll be waiting a long time.
Hard bricked my SGS2, which was rooted, and they fixed it under warranty anyway.
As the wise men at Nike say...Just Do It.
I contacted Samsung and complained about the delay. They said that T-Mobile is responsible for issuing the firmware upgrades, not them. I think we're now five versions behind so it's probably time to go down the manual upgrade route using Odin.
I was lucky got 2 SGS3 when they first came out from tmobile store in hull there both unbranded with stock samsung firmware on them and get all updates, just flash stock rom.
I bricked my first galaxy 1 and got it replaced by tmobile in the first six months in store, the clowns on the tmobile forum talk crap.
I contacted T-Mobile and complained about the lack of firmware updates compared to the unbranded phones. A few days later they called me and basically said that they have no information when the next firmware update would be available but that they would pass on my complaints to the technical team. Pretty poor for such a high end phone!

as for jelly bean i read somewhere that Samsung was pushing out csc updates b4 jelly bean release so maybe that's got something to do with it
I have just got a s3 on t mobile which is sim locked to them. Not bothered about that but can i flash the older lf2 firmware and update via kies. I know the lf2 was an unbranded firmware so im not sure if it would be ok to flash that one.
LF2 is the only update provided by T-Mobile to date. It is fine to flash this with Kies. I did it when it first came out over two months ago and it worked fine. I couldn't really tell any difference though. I'm now on unbranded LG8 flashed with Odin as t-Mobile don't appear to be in a hurry to issue anything further.

My apologies. I have been following SGS3 update on Twitter and I must have missed the LG2 update for UK T-Mobile which is more recent than LF2. As far as I know Kies is used to update to the latest firmware. You can use Odin to flash earlier firmware for UK T-Mobile (or indeed other firmware).

Hi ashmont - which rom did you use and whats the verdict?
Utterly fed up of waiting but last rom I used wasnt ready for prime time - call quality was unusable and stability awful. then couldn't hear/talk on a call, so flashed back to stock for a replacement that took nearly 2 weeks to turn around with the feckless halfwits at tmobile. Have put off another flash as want to make sure I get something that works.

[Q] 4.1 Update not showing in Kies or OTA

Hi, I have a i9300 (international) S3, , and I wanted to flash the official 4.1 by Kies or OTA, since it's been released some days ago. I see a lot of people getting the Oficial update via Kies (not the Odin method with Poland rom), in the Interantional, the same as me. Might it be that Kies or Samsung doesnt let the update here yet despite it being international (Being even that this phone ISNT from Argentina, it's the international version bought in America I think, or Europe)?
It's not release yet for your country.

So it's basicaly being "blocked" because the location of my IP, right? Doing some VPN crap could trick that? (asking so I don't waste my time, I know how to do it).
Do you know if in United States the International verison has the update via Kies?

? Mhm... but I didn't buy it in Argentina, and it's the International version bought directly without carrier and unlocked... what makes then this phone different in CSC to others phones also international and same exact things being updated perfectly then?
It's not release for almost any device. You'll see the update hiting europe in october, and probably other areas too.

It seems that It's a bought in Panama, with I9300UWHCLG4 ... it's gonna be a loong time I guess till I have official JB. Dang.

At the moment it's largely irrelevant where your phone was bought. JB has only been released on an extremely limited basis - Poland and a smattering of networks in a few countries (though I've seen no one talk about these countries on here). There is no IP blocking. JB just isn't here. And if people are claiming that they're getting JB from Kies, they're lying unless they have Polish phones.

Question Best Way to Update on MNVOs?

I've got an unlocked S23 Ultra, S918U1, currently running on Google Fi. Will probably be switching to US Mobile's Verizon plan soon tho. I'm wondering what my best options are for keeping the device updated. It's still on May but maybe too early to worry about the June update? But I can get a little impatient sometimes and I'm not sure how updates tend to go with MNVOs.
So I guess I'm wondering about: Smart Switch, changing CSC, and Odin. Any tips for keeping this device promptly updated?
Use Odin. Changing CSC shouldn't matter too much although it might cause problems if you don't wipe data. It's been a while since I've dealt with Samsung.
As far as getting ahold of the firmware in the first place I believe Frija is your best option, although I don't know whether Samsung makes their updates publicly available at the same time they push OTAs.

If you bought it as an unlocked phone...and it isn't network (carrier) branded...you'll get the updates more quickly anyway.
The U1 version usually gets the updates about two weeks after Korea does...and only one week after we in Europe do.
FYI....if you device is unbranded...it doesn't matter what carrier your SIM is. The updates are independent of the carrier.

Oh, thanks for the information, I do have an unbranded US U1 model, so maybe I'll be able to just wait for the updates to come OTA. That would be the easiest of course.
