I just got my s4 and setting it up. Goo manager flashes TWRP great, but no dup format. ROM Manger failed to flash a signed CWM recovery, so I made one....

I would like to know exactly how to flash this as the CWM that goo flashes will not let me restore backups, always errors on data! So after we download the file in the OP on computer(not on our phone?) do we rename and move it to sdk before running the adb commands?

All VZW S4 bootloaders need to be signed. You cannot flash the bootloader like a norrnal zip, but instead adb push it over and have loki sign it for you.
This will work on Mac, Windows, Linux. You phone needs to be turned on.
1) Download and unzip the file
2) FInd an variant of ADB for your system, whether the SDK, from motochopper, or any other.
3) In any terminal/command prompt, cd (aka navigate to) to the directory that stores the adb file
4) Then copy/paste:
Code:
adb push recovery.lok /data/local/tmp/
adb push loki_flash /data/local/tmp/
adb shell
su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/loki_flash
/data/local/tmp/loki_flash recovery /data/local/tmp/recovery.lok
5) If successful you will see loki output telling you it was a success.
6) Profit

So I rooted my S4 and all was good (Not my first rodeo)
I was running a Stock Deodexed ROM and I flashed a mod to change the toggles to blue. Still... all was good, but
then I decided to start fresh and clean up a bit. So I formated the device, wiped caches, data reset, yadda ya...
Flashed a different Stock Deodex and everything still seemed fine. I tried flashing the blue toggle mod and then got stuck on boot. Pulled battery and still nothing. Wiped all data again and flashed the ROM again without doing the toggle mod. Ever since then, no matter what ROM I'm on or have any mods, if I reboot I get stuck at boot screen. The only way to get past this is to wipe EVERYTHING again and start over. However... Hot/Quick/Shell reboot doesn't lock up on me.
So basically I'm at a point with my S4 that makes it impossible to flash anything and be able to boot. I even have to wipe everything before I can do a successful restore.
I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.2 and currently on my latest backup of cleanrom 1.3
Any ideas are greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thanks community!

From DarkMenace's signature, quite a nice resource he has composed. I ran into a similar situation with TWRP and ClearnRom 1.3 last night, ended up using Odin to push the "SCH-I545_MDK_562219_Stock_Restore.tar.md5.gz" in that link. Went back to bone stock, but it's nice to know there is a fallback incase something ever goes awry.

Yes, but there are root files there also.
So then what? Or do I just use Odin to do the whole kernel flashing thing again to gain root? Sorry to sound so noobish, just don't wanna go through this again. Lol
Should I just maybe try that VRUAMDK no wipe .tar?

You use Odin. You can use either file.
Sent from my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 using XDA Premium HD
Yeah I know I use Odin. I guess I should have worded that better.
If I push the .tar you mentioned, I lose root, but some root files will still be there. So my question is... What files and what can I do with them? Or do I just start the whole root process over again as in the first place with those two modified kernels?
The other "no data wipe .tar" file you push with Odin as well, but would you retain root? If so... I would prefer the no wipe .tar, but you know better than me and I greatly appreciate your help and guidance. If the first .tar file is the better way to go and start all over, that's what I'll do. Its almost done downloading anyways, but was just curious about the no wipe and if ya knew anything more about it. I owe you man!

Hello,
(Odd auto submit post.. bleh)
I did talk to Obsidian today and I need some time to cleanup my Safestrap code and build up a test or 2. I'll post an update when it's ready.
NOTES / INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:
I don't think getting a custom recovery running will be that difficult. I've looked at the ramdisk and the stock QCOM setup has many scripts which can be used as hook points to jump into recovery.
Booting 2nd-init ROMs should also be doable (no custom kernel).
However, as one poster already mentions, booting a custom kernel may prove VERY challenging. I don't have a working kexec for QCOM devices, yet. And if the kernel modules are being verified/checked then that obstacle has to be cleared first.
Not saying it's impossible, but most of what we're discussing for custom kernels and kexec on QCOMs doesn't exist at the moment. (This should not be confused with the hard boot hack used on the S3 -- its not kexec)

Safestrap explained...
Hashcode said:
Safestrap is basically a fork of TWRP that I designed to be run on locked bootloader devices. It is NOT flashed to the stock recovery partition like a normal recovery. It lives on the primary system partition where it is installed by an APK.
During the boot, a splash screen is shown (after the bootloader image normally) for a few seconds during the bootup. It has a soft button which can be pressed to enter recovery and another you can press to skip the wait and continue.
Once in recovery, the user can create ROM slots which once activated are used exactly like a normal recovery would use your primary system/userdata and cache. This has the benefit of never altering the primary system which has to be in working order to enter recovery.
The original design for a system like this was developed by Koush for the Droid X. He called it a "bootstrap". And it flashed all of the primary partitions and could end with an unusable system when a "bad" ROM was flashed. This usually required a fastboot (Loki) process to recover from.
The current version used on the older Motorola OMAP phones is safestrap 3.11. Its based on TWRP 2.2.2.1
The reason I haven't put out a test for the S4 is that I had my sources all pulled apart to update the base to TWRP 2.6. Which was a near re-write and required a bit of recoding. I'm also tweaking the actual build process for the recovery so that supporting more devices will be easier in the future.
Hopefully I'll clear that all up soon.

The Root+recovery bounty applies to a loki-like exploit. Meaning that you would be able to flash custom roms and custom kernels. Safestrap without kexec kernel support would be limited to the stock kernel and touchwiz Roms (no aosp or CM), meaning in theory that it would not be eligible for the original root+recovery bounty.
Getting kexec kernel support would be a different story...

This has been extremely helpful for mods on the S4 Active with a locked bootloader. It is not the same as having a out-of-rom recovery but it is a nice work around as mods start flowing to this device. I have flash MANY mods for the Active and it has been GREAT. The developer is working on ideas for flashing roms but currently this is not for flashing roms, do not even try. This has not been tested yet for the G2 and I would not try it until your carrier has a restore option available (currently Verizon, Tmobile and AT&T have one and they can be found here. All credit goes to the original developer and here is his original thread
Do this at your own risk, by flashing a zip without a nandroid back up this can cause a software brick and you will have to restore
1. Install busy box from the play store (YOU NEED ROOT)
2. Install the apk from the forum
3. download the zip you want to flash
4. Select flash now and reboot
If you have get the error that says the zip is not a flashable zip here are some things that will help:
1. make sure there are NO spaces in the zip name
2. make sure the zip name is short
3. if you still get the error that says this is not a flashable zip reinstall busybox and advance features
4. Flash Gordon does not play nice with AROMA installer so the zip must not have the included
5. Check the download zip, sometimes it can get corrupt while downloading to your phone. Try to transfer the zip from a PC and flashing it. (this has happened once to me)

I do not own a Note 3 so I have not been able to test this as I would normally prefer to do before releasing. I do however feel comfortable that it should work as designed.
Before proceeding please verify that you are already on either the NAB or NABD builds. If you are, feel free to proceed.
If you are not DO NOT proceed, you will brick your device.
Instructions:
1: Download the NAB Engineering or Stock Bootloader One-Click.
"SM-N900P NAB Engineering Bootloader.exe"
"SM-N900P_NAB_Stock_Bootloader.exe"
2: Start the Odin One-Click.
Navigate to the location where the Bootloader.exe was saved.
Double-click on Bootloader.exe". *On Vista or newer, you may need to right-click on the file and Run as Administrator.
3: Place phone in Download Mode.
- Power phone completely off.
- Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons, all at the same time.
- Release the buttons only when the ‘Warning!!’ message appears.
- Press [Volume Up] to enter Download mode.
4: Connect USB cable to PC and phone.
Odin should show a yellow COM port in the second column. If you do not see a yellow COM port, you may need to run the Odin One-Click as Administrator and/or unplug/plugin the USB cable after starting Odin One-Click.
5: Start Odin flash process.
Press [Start].
6: Complete - PASS!
Status should change to green PASS! At this point your phone should automatically reboot.
Enjoy!

@rwilco12 Do you think you can also release the official non-engineering edition bootloader tar for us to flash? I'm currently on the engineering edition but all those lines at boot are kind of tripping my OCD.

Boy this is why I love choices. I prefer the engineering/open bootloader, others prefer stock. Having both is an excellent thing indeed.
Glad we have this, that you requested it, and that Rwilco12 published it.
Everyone benefits.
More cowbell.
I bet a dime.
Triband cubed.

sweet, thanks!
what's the difference between engineering and stock?
HELP!
As usual these things never work for me. I followed all the steps in the OP and my phone stock in a Bootloop. So I tried running Freeza's stock tar, and now I see all the code stuff on my screen right above the "Samsung Galaxy Note 3" screen. But my phone is still in a Bootloop. Can anybody point me in the right direction to fix this?
Thanks

Were you already on a KK build? The OP has it in RED text that you already had to be on a KK build for this to work. That's the only thing j can think of.

Damn it. That's it. That's what's wrong. My non-reading ass. Sh**. Is there anyway to flash the Full Stock ROM thru ODIN and then Root again?

Damn man, IDK. I would PM the OP or Freeza. My personal guess would be to flash the official KK tar in Odin (the one that Freeza posted.) However, IDK if that will work. You need some advice from someone who actually knows what they're doing.

Hadnt heard back from Freeza yet so, I flashed his stock tar (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2655883) and it restored my phone and updated it to KitKat. All of my apps and things are here but I'm not rooted. So, going to do that now

Cool, happy that worked. The way I gained root was by flashing Phil's CWM in Odin then entering recovery. Once in recovery there is an option to check for root. It will prompt you to reboot and when your up and running go to the Play Store and D/L SuperSU. That's what I did at least.

Try to avoid it because it will most likely have roll-back protection and also there isn't any root as of this moment.

I'm not too worried
Will this be like the official verizon release? How far you guys think the official OTA is now?

Interesting. It will be nice to be on 4.4 and use of the apps that only work with that version (or work better with it).

Yeaahhh baby!!! It's about damn time Verizon gives us something.
I definitely won't be flashing this, it isn't worth losing root for the changes in 4.4, it really isn't that much of an upgrade.

It's possible to get a pre-rooted system.img with SS, install it, immediately reboot into download mode, install boot.img (kernel and ramdisk), modem, bootloader images, etc... then reboot. S4 guys did it. It's completely feasible for us. I can provide instructions for you to do this, but it may be somewhat verbose.
If we as a community are interested in seeing further leaks, I'd advise against uploading any mirrors of these files. The uploader has requested exclusivity. This seems like a fair trade-off to me.
Hey guys
Please please please
For the sake of development.....do not mirror this file at all. The individual responsible for the file does not want any mirrors uploaded.
Thanks for understanding.

I thought we can only install roms with Safestrap. Not even a kernal. How can this be accomplished through SS. Just curious, I'm not a developer.

Convert system.img.ext4 to img, extract contents, apply su/ss, create TWRP zip, safestrap to system, reboot into download mode, flash everything else using Heimdall except original system.img.ext4 since it's not rooted.

You also need files from cache.img.ext4 that ultimately end up in /system.
Has kingo been successful with any of the other KK N3 variants?

Also, it's just sec_csc.zip from /cache/recovery that needs to be flashed in Recovery.
