[Q] can't SIM unlock - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently switched from AT&T to T-mobile. The phone however will not allow me to use t-mobile's sim card. The sim unlock code that ATT provided me does not work. I've called ATT and they can't figure it out.
Could the failure to unlock the sim have anything to do with these facts?
At one point I rooted the phone, but then an OTA update broke root
The Flixster app won't play anything because it sees an su binary which still exists but can't be used
Is there some sort of hack I can apply to SIM unlock my phone?

I've heard of considerable number of cases where the unlock code doesn't work because the phone was rooted, so that might very well be it.
I don't know what do you mean by "it broke root" because it seems at least some parts of are still present. If you have the "su" binary in the right directory and it has the right permissions, you can just install Superuser or SuperSU or any other superuser app from the market and you have a working root again. In which case you could also try unrooting (some SU apps support that) and try the unlock code again.

Thanks. Root checker says my phone is not rooted. Another checker app says everything is locked up, but the su binary does happen to still be around.

You are missing the point. Of course any tool out there will say it is not rooted. That is irrelevant.
I already suggested a course of action, you can either try it or not...

Yes, I am planning on trying it. I just haven't had time yet. I still wonder if there is a way to carrier-unlock the phone via hacking. I just don't know enough about it to even know what to google for. I will spend some more time searching the internet etc. I know rooting gives access to all files on the phone. I know rooting is different than bootloader unlocking, which allows you to put custom ROMs on. What I don't know, is if the carrier lock is something that is unlocked via bootloader unlock, or if it's something entirely different. Is carrier lock something that is actually outside the phone? Ie no matter how much phone hacking you do, you can't carrier unlock because the carrier lock is something that is actually on the network? Just trying to understand.

I see This a lot. It sounds like a crazy idea because we know entering in the wrong sim unlock code will lock up the phone. Recently I was unlocking a Nokia 920. Paid for the unlock got the code back tried entering it. Said it was wrong. Called blowfish unlocks(the company I use regularly) they told me to keep putting it in until it was supposed to lock up the phone. Believe me I didn't just jump up and do it. But in the end I said screw it. And kept entering it. In the end it unlocked. I'm not saying this is the case with your phone. Just that I've seen it happen.

eddified, I had the same issue as you when I bought my Atrix off of eBay.
Took a while, but one option was flashing the Bell Canada radio and then unlocking. That worked. None of the ATT radios worked, but Bell did. This is the bell radio:
https://mega.co.nz/#!y1gljTbZ!SlCaNzO36Kh7SyQCB9SLEUHWgXcK8UXJYRh6Uxrykfo
If the unlock works, you can flash back to the ATT radio. You can find different versions all over these forums, but the bell one is a huge PITA to find, so enjoy the link and good luck!

Thanks. Quick question, do I need to unlock the bootloader to flash a radio? I'm thinking no, but not sure.

I honestly cannot recall. I want to say that I never did a thing to the phone until I had it unlocked, but I'm not sure. Best I can say is try it and you'll find out one way or another.

ah.. it's coming back to me now. I think I put a different radio on the phone awhile back. That's probably what's causing the unlock to not work.

hey tonglebeak, are you saying even though my phone is intended for the US, and the radio is for Bell Canada, I can use it to unlock even while in the US?

Yes. I won't recommend staying on that radio, but that is what I had to do to get my ATT unlock code to work.

Bell Radio didn't work. Tried all kinds of radios. Nothing works.

Atrix network locked"phone is subsidy locked"or"network unlock request unsuccessful"
Hi, I have atrix, borught in last year and got reaplced with at&t in feb2012..It was under the at&t policy so got replaced with refub atrix in feb 2012.
I was travelling abroad in may2012 (india) so I asked the unlock code. they provided me the code.. But unforchunately I enter wrong code 10 to 20 times (i know I am stupid here)... So contacted to at&t cust care.. they said you have correct code... now it has not working with at&t sim also...
so could you guys please tell me the solution to unlock sim so I can use in India???
My atrix is 4.5.91 with baseband 1.77.36
I rooted, unlock bootloader, and factory reset few times already...
Even now it was asking "sim network" unlock code but it wasnt successfull...it give me message "phone is subsidy locked"or"network unlock request unsuccessful"
Is it possible to use custom rom or new update 4.5.141 or any international baseband to use in India or atlead accept unlock code so I can use it...
THanks
PS I am not expert in phone roots or customs etc..but I am above average (with instr I can format or updates roms)
all i can say is that i have read in the forum that if u change ur radio then even valid unlock code wont work. so my suggestion it to get back to stock every thing (as much as possible) and try the unlock code again.
try using fruitcake to get back to stock and best of luck with that

I have changed my radio many times and unlocked without any issues a few weeks back after getting the code from AT&T. I fail to see how a change in radio will prevent SIM/network unlock when AT&T themselves update the radio through their OTA upgrades. Even after unlock you can still continue to OTA with AT&T, have your radio updated through the OTA, (with a stock phone and locked bootloader of course), and not have problems. Without researching what you say further, I can only assume that changing the radio from AT&T to an international variant might cause problems. Do you have a link to where you read this?
Also, when you have used all attempts to network unlock, (10 tries I believe), you are hard locked.
I attempted to move on stock 4.5.91 and tried to unlock but still not able to

Is there way out from here

What is restricted with locked boot loader

What exactly am I blocked from doing with a locked boot loader? There aren't too many roms out there for my Stellar... I figure I'd try to port one from an SIII... but with the seller's locked boot loader could I even get that far? Or is it stock Verizon roms or nothing?

You can't use custom kernels (anyway, you can use custom ROMs).
it restricts write access to some places
I am scouring everywhere for a way to do a sim unlock (i'm assuming this is the bootloader?) my boss sent me a new one of these and I live in a place where I have NO access to Verizon.. and if I don't figure this out i'll have a wifi capable paperweight.. I DID root the device though and put super battery saver on it.
any luck out there?
Cheers-

NO, both are a completely different things. Unlock the bootloader will allow you to use another kernel, regardless your network operator.
Some Samsung devices can be sim-unlocked for free (check Google Play), but for major of the rest of the phones, you need to paid for it.

[Q] Xperia X10a, confusion about the bootloader, and its ability to be unlocked

I have an x10a, and I have for a while. But, its getting old, and boring. I wanted to spice it up with a custom ROM, namely Cyanogenmod. But going through the steps, xflashtool doesn't seem to want to play ball, informing me that "Your phone bootloader cannot be officially unlocked".
I've flashed it before, but only back to stock. This time I want something new.
Now, I've googled around and I've found a few pieces of information about this, but nothing concrete, and certainly nothing very in-depth.
I need to know;
- Does this mean that my attempts at a custom ROM are just at a halt completely? Too bad for me, try a different phone?
- If not, can I force the bootloader to be unlocked, and will it remove my ability to use the radio capability in the phone? (as I have read in a few places now), because my phone isn't a lot of good without the ability to do phone things.
- If I can force it, how, and are there any downsides?
and bonus round;
- Why are there certain phones that just can't have the bootloader unlocked.
Cheers in advance guys, I'd really like to hear some good news about this, but anything is better than what I have at this point.

My X10i is carrirer locked, and I could unlock the boot loader without any problems.
The problem with those who lose their radio capability, is, as I suspect it to be, because they tried SIM-unlock their devices with third party methods in a way that are not supposed to be done. (A "bad" hack method of some kind). Once they unlock the boot loader, they lose that poor third party hack, and the device reverts back to a SIM-locked state. Since most of the people who do SIM-unlock their devices, uses a different carrier, will also lose the radio because of the carrier/SIM lock.
One can safely unlock the boot loader if:
* The device remains SIM-locked and haven't been touched by poor, unknown SIM-lock hacks.
* The device isn't SIM-locked in the first place. (Device was delivered in an unlocked state)
* The device is SIM-unlocked with the proper method, where one get proper unlock codes from their original carrier matched with the IMEI code.

My phone was delivered locked to... Vodaphone? I think. I unlocked it a long time ago. But, I unlocked it by given them my IMEI, and getting the unlock code from them. So, as legit as it gets really. I am still not allowed to just unlock my bootloader. Based on what I've seen in this thread, and a couple of other places, if I force the bootloader to unlock by "less sturdy" means, I should be fine with my sim-unlock, or be able to just contact them again and get a new unlock code.
So, this Testpoint method that TakuyaZ mentioned, anyone able to point me in the right direction for that or an alternative? I can't seem to find a decent tutorial anywhere.

What method did you try to unlock the bootloader with? As far as I know your SIM-unlocked status shouldn't be affected at all, as it is properly unlocked, with the radio accepting all carriers. (Radio part of the device is semi-isolated from the rest of the system)
Try this method, and you should be fine: (But I cannot promise anything. If you do try it, you're on your own.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253277
It's the method I used on a few X10i devices. Works on SIM-locked devices (They'll remain SIM-locked after, as it should be), as well as unlocked devices that previosly has been SIM-locked, but unlocked with the proper codes from the carrier. They remained SIM-unlocked after unlocking the boot loader. Good news that is.
So if you really know that your device has been properly SIM-unlocked with codes delivered from the carrier that locked the device in the first place, you should be fine. A.f.a.i.k, the only ones that lost their radio on their devices, are the ones who used improper third party hacking methods to SIM-unlock their devices.
Warning: If you are not 100% sure about what method that has been used to SIM-unlock your device. Stop. And turn back.
Alright, attempting the method posted above, I have hit a snag. I then proceeded to hit the same snag over and over again, trying minutely different methods.
My problem is with the qsd8250_semc tool.
The most I can get out of it is;
"
Process requires standard 2.x android firmware.
Press any key to continue...
Getting ROOT rights.
error: protocol fault (no status)
error: device not found
error: device not found.
Waiting...
"
Any suggestions? At this point I've tried the methods listed on the sites below, but nothing is working.

Did you try with Flashtool? Don't use the newest version, you need 0.9.10 release. From http://androxyde.github.io/ There is a thread on here some where ill inbox you the link if I find it.
But it is easy as to do. By memory I think you click the padlock in flashtool to root phone then click on the plugins and you have the option to unlock boot loader with a click. Not sure if you have to add recovery first? Get the older version of flashtool though.

The only things needed on the X10 part is it to have original (Stock) firmware with Android 2.1 or 2.2, with the original 2.6.29 kernel.
Also one need to enable debugging over USB (Debug Bridge) in the developer settings. And lastly need the drivers installed if using Windows. (Which I assume is the case here)
Once that's done, it should all work.
I've written a Linux script if anyone needs it. Still need the other files from the original qsd8250.7z toolset from the_laser's thread. See attached files.
Place qsd8250_semc.bash in the same director as qsd8250_semc.cmd, then execute it.
One also need Linux-version of the adb command, and in the system PATH variable.

Hey bud, I just finished creating a flash zip for supersu 1.69 and busybox 1.21.1. Just go to this link "click me - I'm a link" to get the download. Its in the HTC One Sv forum but my girl has the same phone as you because I was the one who gave it to her. Root works and I also provide source code so anyone can see what exactly it is doing before they even decide to use it. All you need to do is download a custom recovery for your phone then go into fastboot and boot the custom recovery using the command
Code:
fastboot boot customrecovery.img
The name of the image will be whatever you name it. I recommend customrecovery.img.
You want to boot it vice flashing so you can do a complete backup of your device. Afterwards, go ahead and flash the customrecovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery customrecovery.img
The initial backup will even backup and preserve your original stock recovery.img. You need the custom recovery in order to flash the zip from your sdcard.
Anyways, I am familiar with your phone so if you need help just pm me.

Rob!!! You have unlocked the SIM for HTC Evo Design to use on domestic-to-USA GSM? I would LOVE to know more about that. I've looked all over the place. There's another user name lechen that has also been trying to get it to work. Sprint tells me its unlocked but it won't work with domestic GSM. With freedomPop and Boost using this phone there must be a way to get the SIM to work in the USA.

Yep. fairly easily yet difficult if you don't have the right equipment. You have to unlock sim [if locked] as previously mentioned and set Carrier ID or CID to 11111111 from SPC___03 [or whatever it is]. With Sprint set as the Carrier ID, they control the provisioning and can restrict GSM to non US carriers; with super CID as it's sometimes called, you are the boss of your phone. Any carrier can provision. Problem lies in that this data [the CID flag] lies in mmcblk07 which is read only memory; so, you have to do some pretty drastic stuff [disassemble phone, short the test point, hook it up to your riffbox, and then write that data]. I unfortunately don't know a way around that. Hope that helps.

QPST can unlock the read only memory "nvm" folder. So could these changes be made there, without requiring the hardware equipment you mentioned Rob? It took new radio software, and Olinex's sim unlock tool just 15 minutes to unlock my Verzion Global HTC touch pro 2 for US gsm use. So there has to be an easier way (or at least a software only way) to do it with this phone.
Can anyone else chime in with ideas?

without supercid, there are things you can try.. no guarantee if they will work or not.
There is a db file on htc roms that holds all the apn information.
One could try editing this db file w/ a sqlite editor. It's at /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db . Now, before you go too crazy, backup that file. Then try adding your AT&T apn info into that db [US carriers have been left out intentionally]. If that keeps [is not rewritten each boot] you should be good to go w/ maybe a minor build.prop tweak. Otherwise, you'll have to get supercid; which, is the route I went. Basically the radio supports gsm & cdma; it's adding the gsm carriers you want [if you can get around Sprint's control] or controlling it yourself [supercid]. Hope that helps.
Regards,
Rob

WOW!!! "[disassemble phone, short the test point, hook it up to your riffbox, and then write that data]"
That is beyond my skills. I might pay someone to do that since I have no RiffBox.
I see offerings online for a code they claim will unlock the SIM reader for about $20. So, either this is a blatant lie or there is a software way around it?
Anyone in NC or NY wanna do this stuff to my phone?
If someone wants to try this I'm willing to pay also. But I still think there has to be a software-only way to do this.
Rob, I did try editing the files you said, but with no luck. Could we use the old MTTY program to try and gain superCID?

International SIM Unlock and Installing Custom ROMs

I am moving to Taiwan next month and I wanted to unlock my phone to be able to use SIM cards from their carriers there. I am planning to call Sprint to have them do it for me OTA but I just wanted to check on a couple things first.
1. If I decide to install a custom ROM after Sprint does the SIM unlock, will it "break" the unlock? I'm not exactly clear on what controls the locking of the SIM card so I just want make sure I know what to avoid doing to my phone in order to keep the phone unlocked for international use.
2. If I cancel my Sprint service and only use the phone on an international carrier will the SIM unlock stick? I'm assuming it would but I just want to make sure because of my ignorance of how this whole SIM unlocking thing works.
Thanks in advance, any insight about this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the link! I think I'll try going the free route first and have Sprint unlock it for me. If I end up running into any problems in the future with flashing ROMs, it's good to know that there's an app I can buy to keep it unlocked.
