[Q] Possible Softbrick from OTA Update - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright. I have lurked XDA for a long time and this is the first time in seven years of WinPhone/Android flashing I have felt the need to create an account and actually ask a question myself. I really, really did try to find the answers on my own.
So here's the story: Bought an Atrix 4G when they first came out a couple of years ago. Used it for a couple of months, upgraded to Gingerbread no problem. Eventually gave the phone to my girlfriend on T-Mobile, so I had to unlock it. I was very clear with my instructions to NEVER update that phone when it prompts for it.
And she was good! For two years she used that phone with minimal problems. She switched to AT&T this summer and got a new phone, so I got the Atrix 4G back. I hadn't touched that thing in two years and when the prompt came up for an update, of course I updated it. I knew, the *instant* I hit the update button I knew, that I was not supposed to do that. I figured whatever, I want to throw Jelly Bean on it anyway, so let it go and I'll sort it all out on the other end.
Well here I am on the other end, and this thing is effed. It gets as far as the Moto logo and DUAL CORE TECHNOLOGY... and just sits. Still says UNLOCKED up in the upper left, so I guess that's a good sign.
So that's where I am now. Here are the problems I have:
-I want to upgrade this to CM 7.2.0, but first I need to be able to talk to it. Every link for the drivers I can find points directly to Motorola's (now defunct) MotoHub site. I found ONE link that didn't, and it was just an installer for Device Manager. So I can't talk to the thing.
-When I try to do a recovery, it fails and I get a splash screen that says www . goapk . com. No idea what that's all about.
-When I try flashing from a ROM on the SD card, it says it completes the install, but still will not boot past the Moto logo.
So guys, I come to you now at my most desperate hour. Help me, XDA. You're my only hope.

Goapk is the recovery from I believe it was romracer or someone. Since then, there have been updated recovery.imgs that can be used. Usually the drivers install automatically when you hook up the device to the computer, but i'm assuming you're referring to adb and fastboot files? Those files are here on xda, off hand i'm not exactly sure which thread, but they are here online. If that's what you need, download them, and then via fastboot flash an updated recovery to your device, then try flashing the ROM following the usual proceedures.

Thank you for your response, but man I really cannot find those drivers anywhere.
I know there are two different drivers I need to have the PC driver and the USB driver... but the only thing I can find *at all* is the Motorola Device Manager. I knew I should have saved those the last time I downloaded them.

Sure but the motorola device manager only works if you phone its working, cuz when you open the MDM it`ll only look for updates and the shut down... sooo.... any other way?

I was in the same quandary and installing the Motorola Device Manager - is THE only known way to get the drivers for Motorola devices. It should auto detect your phone as Atrix and go ahead. However, I don't think you're going past the bootloader, so not much luck there.
You said, you could still access recovery? Why don't you try the fruitcake stock ATT GB ROM then (from recovery)?

[Q] Is my SGPT121 salvageable?

I have spent a week sifting this forum and was unsuccessful in answering my own question. Please guide me as I am a NOOB to Android. Or straight up tell me I gotta send this in to Sony.
I bought this Xperia Tablet 2 in May. LOVE it! Made no Root mods, totally stock. Updated to 4.1.1 - OK! Updated to 4.1.1 release2 - issues.
Within a week, the tablet would shut off in the middle of Paper Monster and web browsing. I would restart and everything was fine, for a while. Then it shut down and would not boot back up. Sticks on SONY.
Tried soft reset, no luck. Tried Recovery (very hard to get into, fails 80% of the time to enter) no luck, still sticks on SONY.
So I don't have access to put the USB Debugging feature on, and its not rooted so 6.5 All-in-One can't help me (at least not in my current NOOB status)
I did purchase a brand new SGPT122 to replace this one, but have not set it up in hopes maybe someone could tell me how to copy the OS or RECOVERY off of it and install it on my SGPT121 to revive it.
Whats my next step?

Option 1 send to Sony tell them issues and ask for downgrade in firmware. They will probably say it is not possible.
Option 2 root and use AiO tool to install rescure back-door then you can install JB r1. You can then unroot and have it as stock.

OK I have been attempting this all evening. I cannot get my computer to recognize the tablet. That is because I cannot enable USB Debugging because I cannot get past the SONY screen, right? Or is there another way to root?
It appears I can only access the Recovery Screen, and it does not like the version of OTA.zip I have. I have not found Recovery ROMS for this tablet.
I really appreciate your time, Thank You.

Adb should still be available in recovery wether usb debugging is on or not. Is it asking for a driver at all?
If you had the latest update installed then. You wont be able to install anything and it will need to go to sony.

Check your device manager to see if the tablet driver is properly installed, if not, install it. This might help.

Thanks for the help! I called Sony today, they said since the computer doesn't recognize the device and it will only go into recovery sometimes the pad needs service. (I know OF COURSE) But is does stand to reason since I have plugged into multiple PCs and no recognition. They are sending a box for me. I just hope my 32Gb version doesn't tank also.

[Q] p769 - softbricked by noob

i finally figured out how to get CWM installed and working, after a couple of months of fighting with it, off and on. so, i guessed that meant i have my bootloader unlocked - "wrong!".
i deleted some thing that wasn't supposed to be deleted, then the damned cell network and lan network stopped working (keeps saying com.android.phone has stopped). so i was going to put cyanogenmod on it, because i thought that i could, and just be done with the whole "missing apps" crap. it turns out "just because you CAN put CM on it doesn't mean you CAN put CM on it". i bricked it. i have NO options to "load" or "flash" or "boot" any thing when the phone is booting up. i would love some clarification as to what i CAN do from here.
i would rather install CM and be done with all of this, but i'll take any advice that gets rid of the problem. the biggest problem is understanding how to put CM on your phone, or to do any thing at all like that, when you cant get into any kind of recovery / boot menu, even though you ARE rooted... i don't care if i have to install cyanogenmod or some one else's CWM backup, i just don't know HOW to do it - especially with no windows (only linux). it's a rooted p769v20d (originally p769v10g).
thanks

i was going to try some stuff mentioned in other threads, but i don't have access to a windows computer - and i don't think i need to root my phone again any way, considering it is still rooted.

fwiw, regarding the mysterious deleted app:
i lose my internet signal as soon as it says "com.android.phone has stopped", then i get it back again right before it says that message again - it ALSO shows a cell-phone signal right before that message. this repeats over and over and over every few seconds - aggravating as hell...
here's the apps that i still have installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45774770

Nice thread title. That is how I am feeling right now with this phone. I feel like calling tech care and yell at them for a bit to vent. Anyway, why not install fastboot for Linux and flash the ics u and x? I uploaded my u and x folder in the Unlock Bootloader for Noobs thread. Then, flash the 20h.....oh, dang.... sorry. Forgot.... no Windows. Maybe do the built-in restore by holding the volume down, home and power keys?

thanks, but i think i finally got it working. i never knew, after all this time, that after you do the l9recoveryinstaller, at the reboot, there are no cues to tell when when to hit some buttons, and it's not clear what buttons to hit. here's what i did, and, so far, its progress:
1: be rooted
2: install busy box, completely
3: install l9recoveryinstaller
4: reboot
5: after you see the LG logo, hold vol-down until you see the flashing lights (i thought you see the flashing lights and THEN you hit vol-down, but i was wrong).
still fighting to get a rooted rom installed ...
if i choose "install zip from external sdcard" is says:
"finding update ... opening update ... installing update ...installation aborted".
if i choose "restore" instead of "install" it will not let me select any thing, it just keeps saying file not found, when i try to select any further options, whether "restore" or "restore from external sdcard" or "advanced restore from external sdcard". and i already checked to make sure the sdcard was mounted...

I think your phone bootloader is locked, you cannot flash any custom rom zip file. It will soft brick your phone.
Please restore P769 CWM back from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204. Download backup file and unbzip it. Put extract files in your sdcard /clockworkmod/backup/2013-08-30.12.00.00 folder. Extract file should contain several .img, .tar, .a, .log and .md5

Well correct me if I am wrong, but I guess you "only" deleted some system files, right? Do you remember which ones were the ones? Or at least the folder they were in? Then you only need to extract that stuff from a kdz/ the bin file and push them on your phone using adb or maybe even the dd command.
Maybe if someone is kind enough, he ll probably provide you with the files you need. And cmiiw, but I guess you deleted stuff from /system/app...

However, i would recommend using a portable windows xp (bootable usb)
VR is not the best option IMO

Sorry I can't provide a link to the iso but do a google search for

It's depend on what method you use. You can flash kdz using offline method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
or use LG mobile support tools from LG website. If you choose this you don't need to download any kdz. It'll download kdz automatically from LG server then flash it on your phone. It take about an hour or two.

thats awesome - i wonder if i can get by with using that on wine on linux, instead of borrowing a windows computer... i'm gonna try it...
well, the verdict is in, on this one: i'm screwed. i've tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried, and i can NOT flash this damned phone. it's BRICKED.
i borrowed / hijacked my brother's computer (windows7), all day. i tried a few different things - i even tried the same way i flashed it to update it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356536 ), which was worthless to unbrick it.
the problem in every case was that every time the damned flasher got so far along it would "lose the connection to the phone". drivers installed, etc, etc, no difference. i suspect its because i couldnt connect it in all the various modes (mtp ptp etc), since the ONLY way it would connect is in "software upgrade mode".
i had to buy another phone, won't have it till tuesday. lesson learned: NEVER buy a phone that didn't come from samsung... you just can't do what you want with them, without a lot of time, patience, experience, and a windows computer.
thanks for all the help.

Did you try to recover your phone with LG mobile support tool. It can reinstall rom in almost any soft-brick case. Please try it if you haven't try it yet. Many people restore their phone by that software. The steps are
- Download LG mobile support tool from LG web site
- Boot you phone to S/W update mode
- Run Tool and select recover phone
- Wait about 1-2 hours to download and flash
If it's not hardware problem, this should solve your problem

i never found that on their website, and i looked quite a few times. however, i noticed when i used the b2clientsetup.exe that if i run it without running the shttp server first, that it downloads a support tool from the net, which does not work - keeps saying phone lost connection. not sure if its the same tool.

yeah, that's exactly what i did, but it would keep "losing the connection to the phone". not sure why, but i suspect it was a driver issue - and i installed the latest drivers, which made no difference. i also went back and installed older drivers, which made no difference. i must just be lucky as hell, or some thing .

In my country (RO) there are some GSM Repair Centers. You should not give up and you should go to them. Par example, I flashed an HTC Mozart when the battery was dead and I bricked it (idiot, I know). I went to a shop like the ones mentioned above and I think he said that he has to flash the phone using a JTAG or something like that (I know that he has to open the phone to reach it's motherboard, solder some **** out there and... flash I guess). The whole thing was about ~20E. Anyway, keep digging, maybe you'll eventually find something that works for you. If not, go to someone who can "force flash" it and maybe you can save the device.

[HELP] USB Connectivity Issues

Hey guys. I was going to post this on the Android Forums, but the L9 board there isn't getting hardly any traffic, so I suppose I'll just repaste here:
Hey guys, it's loopy time. xD
I've been through XDA, again, nobody seems to really have an answer for this, or even an answer for me. There's this guy over there named Kuma that made a stock 2nd-init locked bootloader ROM based off of 10e. I don't really desire to go back to it, but I like the fact that it comes with the xposed framework which you all know is an easy way to theme things that you should be able to theme, like making the status bar and notification area transparent.
I made a mistake in thinking that you can install Chainfire 3D on a locked BL, boy was I wrong. Two soft bricks later, I end up on 10d then do the OTA update to 10e. I've got the LG Mobile Support tool working as the offline flash. So I threw d on there and it worked....until I decided that I wanted to enable USB debugging.
There was a thread where I was advised to use Fastboot to flash the U and X boots, which I succeeded, but it wiped most of the partitions. At first I was panicking like...OMG, the family is going to worry because at this point I thought I was hard bricked, and my father is ill yada yada. So after about twenty minutes of crying and flipping out, I was able to get the USB for fastboot working with OMAP (which is tricky to install!) Three bottles of Pepsi Cola later, some chips, and a honey bun, I was able to get back to stock 10d.
Now, I've tried various drivers to try and get this thing to a go for ADB so I could root, install 2nd-init, and get Kuma's ROM back. I tried the updated drivers from the LG website. I have tried LG drivers 3.8.1.
The issue that I am having is that I am unable to access any of the connectivity modes while USB debugging is checked. If I uncheck it and try to plug it in, everything works perfectly. However, when USB Debugging is checked, no matter what connectivity mode I am on, I suffer with the LG Software coming up in autoplay and furthermore disconnecting after about ten seconds.
I tried in Ubuntu Linux to get it to work, and the same thing happens. This leads me to believe that either there is something wrong with the phone or something wrong with my computer, but other devices work. I'm really confused. Is there partitions for 10e MS769 MetroPCS that I can flash via fastboot to correct this? Is there another tool I can use to do this? I pretty much know fastboot is the key, but i'm going to need some assistance.
Hope you guys have an answer. I sure don't.
Please help me with this. I am familiar with fastboot maybe its a bad .bin file?
Assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
LoopyD
Bump.
Anyone?
Had the same problem, usb debug and any sort of adb connection doesn't work. Kuma comes to the rescue like the super hero he is and helped me fix it. Here is the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49475336#post49475336 . Oddly enough this problem got worse for me I had it for about 3 months and it resulted in constant crashes and constant resets. Thank Kuma's post if it works!
Thank you sir. The ADB executable installer now shows the device. Problem solved.
Thanks

[SOLVED][Q] Please Help! Verizon S4 stuck after failed OTA update

EDIT: Adding what I did to solve this at the bottom.
Hey everyone. Thanks for your time. I'm new to this forum and in a bit of a panic as this is the first time my phone's been so far gone I couldn't find an easy guide to fixing it. I'm not exactly clueless but I'd say I know enough to get myself in trouble, and this time not enough to get myself out. I'll give you the rundown.
Phone:
SCH-I545
Verizon Galaxy S4
Last stable version of Android was 4.4.2
I wish I had the build numbers or anything but since I was using official tools I didn't take any backup steps
Computer:
Macbook Pro Late 2013
OSX Yosemite 10.10.3
(I also have access to a Windows 7/LinuxMint dual boot machine if needed)
Using OEM USB cable connected directly into the USB on the motherboard.
Until yesterday my S4 was happily running 4.4.2, when I received a notification of a new update. I ran both Verizon updates that came through. The first one finished fine, the second one (the actual Lolipop update) kept failing in the bootloader type screen (Odin mode?). It would look like an android on his back with 'Error!' written out then restart to 4.4.2.
I did a bit of reading and found out that if your phone was rooted and unrooted, it may not take the OTA update. I recalled that I used a one-click style, app-based root a while back, and quickly reverted it because I didn't end up needing root anyway. (I think the logo for the rooter apk was a Greek letter but that's all I remember. It's on my SD card still. If it would be useful I can figure out a way to read the SD card through another phone or adapter or something and figure out the name. I think it was Towelroot but not positive)
So as I researched how to do the update, I read a post that said the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant would do the job just fine. I figured, since it's a Verizon branded application, I couldn't go wrong. Well, that's where the trouble started.
Everything looked to be going according to plan. The Verizon assistant downloaded the Lollipop update and then began to install it. It booted the phone into what I think is Odin mode and said "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!"
Somewhere in the first third (going by the progress bar) a message popped up on my Mac saying that the phone was unplugged (it wasn't). My phone now displayed a message stating "Software update failed. Your device didn't update successfully. Use the Verizon Software Repair Assistant on a computer to repair your device and complete the update."
Naturally, I attempted to use the Verizon Software Repair Assistant (seems to be part of the same application as the updater) and to my horror found that every time I plug in my phone, the Verizon app crashes immediately! No matter what I do; plug in the phone then open the app, open the app then plug in the phone, app in update mode, app in repair mode, etc., I cannot get the application to keep running when the phone is attached to my Mac. This might be where I did the most damage to myself... In my attempts to clear the crash issue and get the Verizon app working, I clicked something to the effect of "Forget this device" in the Verizon app and all info about my phone was gone. I'm now thinking that included my chance of repairing the broken update, and Kies needs some code to repair from and I think I lost that with the clear
I have not tried the Verizon application on Windows because I can't find it to download it (the phone itself installs the application when you plug it in, but my phone is fried and can't help me right now.) Luckily my wife also has an S4 so when she get's home, I'll be able to try the Verizon application for Windows and see if that can repair.
What I have tried:
Installing Kies on both Mac and Windows and connecting the phone in both "Software Update Failed" mode by simply powering the device on, and in "Downloading..." mode by holding Vol Dwn while powering the device, then saying yes to the confirmation.
I also tried Odin on Windows following this guide – http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259 and I received a missing PIT error.
I found a PIT file and tried it, with the supplied file from the guide, in Odin, but that ends up disconnecting the phone after a second then ending with an error and reconnecting the phone. It wasn't a very descriptive error but I can get more specifics if needed.
Took it to a Verizon store, wasted thirty minutes of my life, left with the same problem and more anger.
At this point I don't want to do more damage so I would really appreciate some advice on how to approach fixing this.
I'd be happy to take any advice and give any further info. Hopefully one of you guys can help me here.
Thanks again for your time and thanks for anyone that might help!!

RESOLUTION
So I was able to get my phone restored and updated to Lollipop, and thanks to my cloud backups I didn't lose my data!
I think my problem was something with my Mac and Phone not getting along together. I'm not sure if it was the Mac version of the Verizon app or some other factor, what I do know is I'm REALLY lucky I have a Windows machine AND my wife has the same phone.
I needed the Verizon app to repair my phone, but I needed the Verizon app on my PC because the Mac version kept crashing when I'd connect my phone. The only source for the Verizon application is to plug the phone into your computer and install it from the phone, which obviously wasn't an option in this case! Luckily I could use my wife's identical S4 to install the utility onto my PC.
Once I was able to do that, I opened the application on my PC, went into Repair Mode by navigating to the Repair tab on the left then selecting Enter Repair Mode or whatever. Then I connected my phone with a clean boot (no special button presses). It was just displaying the error message which instructed me to use the Verizon Repair utility.
After a few seconds the computer recognized the device and it appeared in the list on the repair utility.
I selected the device in the list (it was the only item in the list) then pressed the 'REPAIR DEVICE' button on the right.
It displayed a warning that 'due to the condition of the device' I would lose all of my personal data and settings. I agreed.
The utility then downloaded the latest firmware (the Lollipop update) and proceeded to install it to my device.
After about 15 minutes I had a factory fresh install of Lollipop ready to go!
BONUS, in the initial setup it remembered my settings and automatically offered to restore from a cloud backup. No data loss!!
Hey skullzarmy,
I may be in a similar situation. I to had root awhile back via Towlroot (i think thats the name), received and OTA update. Afterwards checked root with root checker and said No root but SU was found? I assumed I lost root? Now I downloaded the first OTA this morning and it worked. But the second OTA is failing.
I have factory reset my phone and still no worky.
However, I am in the middle of running the Software Repair Assistant as I read your post. We shall see how it goes. Hopefully it does not blow up.
To run the Software Repair Assistant in Windows just plug your phone is and when the prompt appears click the run option. You can install the assistant from there.
Good luck...

Thanks Spyke, I'm just waiting on my wife to get home with her S4 so I can do just that. It's pretty much my only hope. I'm just hoping it doesn't need that device profile that I deleted from my Mac... Good luck with yours! Let me know how it turns out!
OK, quick update. I was able to get the Verizon application installed on my PC and it was able to connect to the phone. It gave me a message saying due to the condition I would lose my data but it would restore it for me. Of course I went with it, so it's doing its thing now. I'll update with how it goes from here.
Please do...in the middle of my repair/update it BSOD my PC and now i think my phone is jacked

Once I got the phone connected to my PC it was smooth sailing.
At what point did you BSOD? What version of Windows are you running?
Glad to hear you got it working!
I think it BSOD somewhere after 50%.
I am on Windows 8.1
Running it again and its a 93% so far.
Phone stuck on Software Update Failed on boot

I ran it on Windows 7. Sounds like you are where I was. I'm hoping it was a fluke and pulls through this time! Fingers crossed for you!

Hey skullzarmy,
looks like keeping your figners crossed help me. After disconnecting my phone, pulling the battery and re-connecting the repair worked and I am back up and running.
Thanks for your help!

Great news! Not sure I helped but glad we both got our phones up and running again!

fastboot flash unlock new_unlock.bin

I'm stuck on waiting for all devices in adb.. My phone screen has a menu with three choices, one of them is flash unlock.bin. Should I keep waiting for all devices for how long in adb?
What procedure are you using to unlock? The WTF process is the one that I believe has worked the best for most people... and that doesn't have anything special on the phone screen, so I'm thinking you're using some app or script?

Yea, I'm following that one. I read somewhere about AMD PCs causing problems. My phone shows when I use adb devices. So should I be a little more patient or what?
No, the processes are quick. AMD Ryzens typically have issues, but it's only because of the USB driver they use. I've heard a few Intels have issues sometimes as well.
The key is, you just need to try other computers... this is the "hardest" thing to do, but it's really the only solution to that issue. The process takes under a second, so it's not a patience issue.
For the record, my older laptop with an AMD A9 CPU did the process fine... so, again, it's not a CPU issue, but a driver issue for the USB, apparently...

Some people had to use 2 or 3 computers. An older one with Intel CPU works best (especially if it has USB 2.0), but yes an AMD can work. As noted by @schwinn8 Ryzens are no go. One guy was upset because he had superfast gaming computer and we kept telling him to try another computer. He borrowed his brother's mediocre laptop and BOOM, worked. Another guy dug some old laptop out of his closet and it worked.
Thanks for the reply...i was just reading about adb making sure it wasn't something i was doing wrong. Even tried on an old iMac that i had installed linux on. "Waiting for device..." So..still reading and learning to be patient. Thank you

Also, try the steps mentioned in Wtf troubleshooting section.
Other than that you may have to mess around in the device manager section to see if the phone is detected properly or not.
(if there's a problem with the driver the device will show up as unknown android device or something)

You said "patient"... just to reiterate, this process doesn't take longer on a computer that says "waiting for device". It's a fast process, so if it's not happening within a few seconds, it won't work on that setup, period. Don't waste your time waiting - get another machine/cable/etc (check the troubleshooting steps to find other possible issues... the computer is usually the biggest problem to overcome, but the most successful).
Good news, i unlocked my phone and installed twrp, then i had to stop the process (wtf)
i still need to make a backup in TWRP and flash two more files from wtf notes. I cannot seem to be able to reboot into TWRP from ADB. thanks in advance
The oem is greyed out in developer mode and says its unlocked. Idk?
Glad to hear you got it unlocked.
In the WTF post it says that the developer mode may remain grayed out after being flipped... this is normal. It comes back after some time. Of course, you don't want to toggle it again anyway, since you're unlocked...
When i go to use an app to boot into twrp..it tells me its not rooted.

Used getvar..unlocked.
Well its done..used an old hp A6 with linuxmint. I found linux to be straightforward and easy when trying to root my phone. No jumping thru hoops and juggling stuff.
Any recommendations for remodeling the phone? Boot to twrp..roms..ect?

Bootloader unlocked is not rooted. It's just the prerequisite to being rooted. Then you install TWRP custom recovery and then use that to flash Magisk. It's all in the WTF Instructions. Also be sure to use the version of Magisk in the WTF Instructions, at least initially.
Thanks..ive got magisk from the instructions. It wants to update..should?
Once you are booted into Android, you can update Magisk to some degree. I forget the last version I had but I recall I could go to 20.x or something without issue. But there is always a risk of having issues if you update to the latest version... so be prepared to go back to the one on the WTF thread if the phone has issues. In other words, don't do this last minute or without a PC to work from... because it could fail.
The only time you have to use the old Magisk is during that first boot with it... once you're booted through, you have been able to update to newer versions. But unless you need some specific feature of the newest version, I might suggest leaving it alone...
I read somewhere..when i upgrade on US 998 20b, i need to move up to 20c?
Also, do i use the "twrp version. 20c"?
