I downloaded this app in anticipation of moving data from my S III to my S4 when it arrives next week.
It looked like a really easy tool to use until I opened it & found that you must agree to sharing data regarding your existing apps, etc. That stopped me cold.
Other thoughts?

Don't you already do this with accepting to Play Store EULA? Same with 1/2 the free apps in it.

Okay, I now have my S4 & am ready to use Smart Switch.
However I have an important question that I don't see addressed in the documentation. I have a great deal of data on my micro SD card on the S III. Since there is no SD card in the S4, how does that data get transferred?

Right, it does. However do I perform an initial transfer with the SD card in the S III then move it to the S4?

Depending on what version of android you have(I think it's 4.2.2) you can move apps right to the SD card. Well some can't however, you can find out through Application Manager in settings. As far as contacts, if you have your contacts synced to your Google account then when the S4 comes in and you do the initial setup and log in with your Google account it will sync your contacts to the new phone.

Sorry to sound like a clutz but I don't want to screw this up.
My S4 Is running 4.2.2. However I don't have an SD card for it. I'll be using the one currently in my S III.
I'll check what data is actually residing on my current card.
I don't sync contacts with Google.

I use Helium. You do not have to be rooted to transfer data from one phone to another. It also is just as easy as backing up apps plus data then transfering the helium folder to new phone and restoring. Works with contacts and text messages too. U will need to connect to computer to enable the backup and restore if your not rooted every reboot.
---------- Post added at 10:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:33 PM ----------
In our case all you need to do is backup to ext SD card of old phone then put SD in new phone aka s4. Install Helium enable and restore.

Does anyhow know what the directory to save to the SD card is, to set in Handcent? I've tried almost every one I can think of, and none of them work, it keeps saving to the devices internal storage in /handcent/downloads.
The default I believe that it shows is extSdCard (I don't have my phone next to me at the moment, so I can't verify), but even then it still saves to the internal storage of the phone itself, whereas I'd like pictures that I get via MMS to be saved to the card (I've also done the "long keypress" on pictures I get and told it to save to the memory card, and it *still* saves to internal storage).
Thanks.
It should be /mnt/extSdCard.

I wasn't thinking that photos sent via SMS/MMS would be considered as application data (but I guess it could be?). Just is/was easier to have all the photos my wife gets on her phone saved to the memory card, as opposed to directly to the device.
I have had my galaxy s4 for about a week and a half now and love this phone. I still have 7 GB of space left, but tutorials online that show apps could be moves to the SD card. I have a Verizon Gs4 and when i go to application manager i do not see the option to move apps to the SD for all of my apps. I even tried installing a app that the tutorial shows was installed on the SD card and i could not move it. Has Verizon not launched the update for the S4 to install Apps to the SD card? It would be nice to move some apps to the SD card.
There should be an update soon. It is rolling out in Germany first.

At this point, we're unable to move apps to SD card. As you mentioned there is an update slated for the int'l version S4 - will be obviously after that b4 the Verizon mods are implemented. These is a app in the play store "folder mount" that could definitely help to maintain internal space: must be rooted

The update will be useless in regards to reclaiming space. You're better off buying the pro version of Folder Mount and using it to symlink Android/OBB.

Has there been any news on this?
If I'm running a custom ROM will my phone be able receive this update, or will I have to wait for the ROM to be updated as well? TIA
There is a nice program to perform this task ..You can Also transfer basic programs to external memory, but they need root...
Might I be so bold as to ask the name of said program?
Is there a reason my phone doesnt give me the option to move an app to the Sd card?
I dont wanna fill up my internal space again, like I did on my last phone. But no apps have the "move to sd card" option.
How do I put apps on the external sd card??

The ability to move apps to SD was removed in Jelly Bean by Google. Samsung has recognized this limitation and has developed a way to do just that. The Samsung fix is rolling out to the international variants first and hopefully soon to the various US ones.
Really? Thats lame. So there is no way to put my apps on the sd card? I have a lot of apps & have taken up almost half of the internal memory already.
So no way to do this at all?

Or use something like ES File Explorer File Manager from the Play Store or am alternative browser like Dolphin. ES has a downloader that is one of the choices when downloading a file from the web. In the ES settings you can set its default download location to the external card. Dolphin lets you pick the download location at each download. The TouchWiz camera and some others let you specify where to store photos.
Also, Titanium backup and other backup apps let you back up to the external card.
And most important of all, especially if you are crack flashing TouchWiz ROMs, keep your TWRP or CWM backups on the external card. They can be 2 GB+ each if you don't use compression, and not much better if you do. I have a 16 GB Nexus 7 and its a constant battle with backup space. I usually keep one solid reference backup and my latest only. I would love to be able to throw a 64GB card in it.

I have been getting an "insufficient storage space" warning for months now...need to get it resolved.
I am rooted, on HD10, ME7 with Safestrap 3.65
Storage settings shows the 16GB total space, with 7.70 GB used under miscellaneous files, the majority of which appear app-related
I have no photos, music or other files on the phone
Apps were installed to internal, not card (which is 8GB)
Is it as simple as slash and burn some apps? Move a bunch to the card?
I also keep getting Samsung apps automatically reinstalled after deleting - not sure why

Well it sounds like you should at least try moving everything you can to the external card. You can use apps such SD Maid to clean up the phone and see what you're biggest files are and where they are. You can use Es File /download manager to make sure all your download are also going to external card and you can use Folder Mount to point pretty much anything you want to external card as well. So you can try things like that and I bet you'll be in good shape.

Ext storage shows 6.55GB used / 14.4 avail (54%)
Internal storage shows 6.07GB used / 9.70 avail (37%)

Yea sure if you're considering moving to that why not. As far as what size to make the slot I'd jump over to the Safestrap thread and ask someone opinion there. I've always kept my slots on the default sizes and had no problems so.. SBREEN always suggests doing a full Wipe and then fresh install so I wouldn't dirty flash.
Right now unless you just don't want Knox which I suppose is understandable, there's a safe root method for 4.3 if you wanted to move up and get on HD12 too which is what I'm on. It's debatable at best if it's worth staying on 4.2. They're currently working on kexec support on Safestrap 3.71 /mj7 base so maybe one day we will have more options. Hyperdrive is really the only stable option right now anyways. That's up to you though.

Well any rom slot you create is just using another piece of your internal storage space for all that roms system apps and data and any other apps you may download. So you can eat up 1 or 2 gigs pretty quickly on a rom slot if you're not careful that's all I was getting at.
You really shouldn't have a problem if you get rid of apps you don't need, move the ones you can to your external card then have all your downloads, music, pictures whatever else pointed there as well.
You have a ton of apps?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Presently have 65 since fresh download from playstore after wipe. Doesn't seem excessive. Since it seems related to system apps is there a way to cull clutter there without screwing stuff up?
Going to HD12 seems a bit beyond my comfort level. Is upgrading from 10 to 11 any big deal or do you follow the same steps?

Well I don't think it's the system apps in particular. Everything you download whether from the play store or the Web goes directly to internal storage unless you change that. Add those things in with the actual rom itself and your going to eat up internal space quickly.
So again move whatever apps you can to your /ExtSdCard.
And get rid of the ones you don't need.
Move all pictures and music to /ExtSdCard
Get something like Es File manager which has a download manager built in that way all the downloads from the Web go to external storage as well.
Finally if you read up a bit on Folder Mount you can move even more things there.
Upgrading from 10 to 11 shouldn't be an issue since 12 is the one you need to upgrade firmware and Safestrap for.

4. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
5. Wipe cache and dalvik cache

8. Flash ME7 Module.zip
8. Reboot (First Boot may take up to 10 mins)
9. Let Phone sit for 10 minutes
