Phone bootloops after rebooting freshly installed rom - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just as the title says.
Here is the series of events that led up to this.
Picked up a Moto X yesterday and am giving the phone to my father. I factory wipe, clear data and cache, and also format data via TWRP. Install a copy of CleanROM 1.6 Odex on there since that has been my most stable ROM to date. Boots up fine after installation, so I reboot into recovery to create a backup of the ROM for him in case he does anything that messes it up. Go to reboot the phone after a successful backup and the phone hangs at the Galaxy S4 bootscreen.
This is where I'm at now. I have tried everything that I can to get the phone to boot up, and the only thing that will work is to do a data format again and a fresh install. That's all well and good, until I reboot the phone and then it goes right back to not booting. I never took the ME7 update or applied an ME7 ROM. Is there a way to fix the data partition issue that I believe I'm having? Is my only option to Odin back to stock?

What version of twrp are you using?

2.5.0.2 I believe. What is the best version to use? It doesn't matter too much at this point since I ended up using ODIN to flash back to stock and re-rooted. I do want to install a custom ROM for him though. What version of TWRP is the best?

Check out this thread - similar issue solved.

I had the same issue a while ago and fixed it like you did. Others are saying to "fix permissions" in TWRP
after wiping data.:good:

Dual Core Hanging

I recently unlocked my bootloader for my Atrix using an automated tool.
I then installed ClockworkMod and CWM Recovery 4.0.1.4.
I flashed the CW7 stable build, and rebooted (after clearing cache and user data). Now it hangs on dual core screen with the unlocked text at the top left.
I tried using two other ROMs and it always does the same thing. Now, whenever I go to mount the USB, it never shows up in the computer. I can take out my microSD and put anything on that, but the file browser inside CWM doesn't see it.
I think I'm boned, trying a restore just gives me an invalid checksum error.
Im open to any ideas or things I might have overlooked.
Either flash a fruitcake in recovery, or update to the latest romracer cwm and reflash cm7. You should use version 5.0.x

You are a LIFESAVER with romracer. Im now on redpill and flying clear. Turns out firefox was corrupting the zips at the last second for some reason. So I fired up chrome and got it done.

did you wipe data after flashing CM7?
it should be done BEFORE flashing a ROM
cache wipes can be done both before and after.
You can just use your CWM to reflash CM7
For future reference, an incompatible kernel can also cause it to hang or bootloop.
I just had corrupted zip files. The zip was installed incorrectly and was making it hang. I just used an uncorrupted zip and it worked perfectly.

[Q] flashing ram, can't get past samsung boot screen

Hey All,
I had been having troubles with 4.0.3 multi-dpi, so I thought I'd flash Saurom. I flashed this, but upon reboot, I got stuck at the samsung screen. It never went past there, just sat there forever. So, I went back into cwm (holding down vol up/vol down/power), and wiped everything again, and tried to flash saurom again, but same thing happened.
I then tried to flash back to 4.0.3 multi-dpi, with same results. I can get into CWM just fine, but it seems any rom I flash hangs at the samsung boot screen.
Does anyone have any ideas? Right now I'm completely down :/
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Sebastian
Hi sounds like a bad kernel flash.i would go into cwm, do the usually wipes, go to mounts and storage. Format data. Format system. Format cache only. Pull battery. Install any of the odin install Roms through download mode, That should fix your problem. Then you can start over and flash whatever Rom you want

You should restore the latest good backup you created before you flashed whatever is giving you problems.

Just a reminder, when you go to mounts and storage, do not fformat sd storage, this will wipe everything in your memory of your phone

A backup restore should do the trick.

Worse comes to worse you can flash stock Odin. If you one clicked for ICS, remember to flash bootloader first

From my gathering, Saurom & ICS 4.0.3 DPI are incompatible. Meaning you can't flash one on top of the other without doing a full wipe data/factory reset. Having said that, I think the best move then would be to flash back to stock via ODIN, install cwm, redownload whatever ROM to your ex sd card, mount system & data then re-flash.

I "believe" all you need to flash through Odin is the GB bootloader, then you can flash GB roms, the ICS bootloader is what causes the hang up with ROM incompatibilities

Be sure the ROM has the radio load and remember a Nandroid does not flash the radio load. That has to be done manually.

I'm not very familiar with Saurom but from what I've read I think that's correct. ICS needs a clean slate to operate from is all I was saying.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10.2 stuck on circle

This is my first time trying to install this I have a Samsung galaxy s2 T989 And I'm pretty sure I've done it right. I factory wiped it, cleared the cache and the cleared the cache in advanced settings. It's been atlesst over 10min and its still on the blue circle just spinning around.
Can someone please help me?
When I installed cm10.2 for the first time mine done that. Best bet and worked for me is do a battery pull and reboot. If that don't push you past the spinning circle which I ran across you should reinstall the ROM again and it should boot up just fine. Hope this helps

You've bootlooped it. The T989 is a pain when flashing custom ROM's because the custom recovery's built in wipe doesn't quite work for it.
Keep this ZIP handy as you'll be needing to run it every single time you need to wipe data/cache and dalvik. Don't ever ever use any other means of wiping aside from this one until this issue is fixed. I've been doing this for a while and have flashed upwards of 20 ROM's on my T989 alone.
It's called Darkside Super Wipe.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477955
So, just put that ZIP on your SD card, along with your custom ROM and appropriate Gapps. Flash Darkside first (always) then flash ROM then Gapps. Then reboot and problem solved!!
Good luck!! :highfive:
So after putting that in my sd card. Install that and gapps and cm10.2?

Yup, install Darkside Super Wipe first, then install the ROM zip then Gapps. Then reboot!
Should I factory reset and clear caches first or no?

Nope, just run the Darkside Super Wipe and it'll erase all /system, /data and /cache partitions. And like the thread says, it won't wipe your SD card or EMMC.
Just make sure you don't leave the recovery without flashing the ROM and Gapps
Also, you should get in the habit of making backups. You can make them from CWM or TWRP's custom recovery.
Titanium backup is an application on the Google Play store that you should look into as well my friend.
T989 Tears
Very finicky phone for customs. On mine I can get no ROM to fully load other than the stock Koodo 4.04, and CM 10.0 I flashed the latest radio for JB, darkside super wipe, flash custom rom, flash gapps, wipe dalvik. The same process for every ROM i try... still no success, 10.2 stays at boot. Dirty Unicorns starts boot, goes through the "optimizing apps" stage gets to the "starting apps" and reboots, lather, rinse, repeat. I've tried a few others, AOKP and some others. Still only Koodo 4.04 and CM 10.0 will fully boot. Not even the stock T-mobile 4.03 will boot (came with phone). Going to give JMT a shot, it looks pretty

[Q] Issues after switching to cwm from twrp

Been using twrp since rooting note II. I wanted to try out 4.4 PA but they said to only use cwm. It was late so I decided to be lazy and since I used to use rom manager all the time I installed it to flash cwm recovery then booted into recovery to install touch version. It wasn't showing the touch version so selected to restart to check to see where I saved it to it would not boot past the first "note II" splash screen. Battery pull then back into recovery and went ahead and flashed PA 4.4 and now it will get past the splash screen then shows boot animation but then starts all over.
Is this a rom manager issue?
can I flash twrp from within cwm recovery?
will I have to basically reroot it?
Any suggestions on how to get back to twrp and to a usable phone?
thanks
If you download a .zip of twrp and flash it you will have twrp for your recovery.
As long as you flash a rooted rom, you will be rooted.
Not sure what happened with the boot loop, did you by chance wipe the system without flashing another before booting?

Nope did my standard wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and factory reset then flashed rom then gapps. Going to go back to twrp and wait for 4.4 to be more stable before I try it out again and maybe then I can use twrp to flash it.
thanks for the help

Have you wiped data at all? You need to wipe data / factory reset when switching roms, and it sounds like you havent.

As stated above, on both cwm and twrp I wiped caches and did factory reset and still having the issues. Once back on twrp I even formatted internal memory thinking maybe rom manager messed something up on it and still can't get passed the splash screen.

Copy a ROM to your SD card (external not internal)
Install cwm and format data (actually full format, where /data/media gets wiped) and system
Install rom
Reboot
TWRP has some issues randomly with corrupting /data, that's why I no longer use it.

Finally got it. Thought using odin to flash back to root 66 and start fresh would work but after that it was still going to the splash screen then black and a battery pull had to be done. TWRP back ups would fail when trying to restore, so I reverted back to an older version of twrp and it finally let a back up be installed and it booted up just fine!!
thanks for all the suggestions
Im having a similar problem to yours, I am using twrp and flashed PA 3.99 the phone works great, but if my battery dies or i restart the phone or shut it down it automatically wont get passed the samsung logo, or sometimes the PA logo, the only work arounds ive seen to it is to wipe the cache and dalvik to boot, but when that fails i have to install the whole rom over again. any ideas?

Can't get a rom to boot

Hey guys, I kinda at my wits ends.
I have a Note 2 and I was running Sophisticated rom 3.1 just fine. I wanted to try Beans new Alliance 23 Rom. So I booted into TWRP 2.6.3.1 and backed up Sophisticated 3.1 first, then wiped everything and flashed Beans 23. Phone would not get past the boot animation. I tried to use the restore I had just created and TWRP fails. Tried upgrading TWRP to 2.6.3.2, didn't work, now any rom I try to install or recover from I get errors in TWRP saying too many files open and a second one about data/data/com.contacts. I tried Philz CWM recovery, I even tried downgrading back to TWRP 2.6.3.0 and nothing. I can not get a rom to boot past the boot animation. Please help. I have unlimited data and I can't go use an upgrade.

I am using twrp 2.6.3.1. I would reflash the recovery. Then I would wipe everything except your external SD card. I have noticed that if I don't wipe my internal SD for awhile I will start having goofy stuff happen. That usually fixes any issues I have.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
Yeah, I tried all that as well. Rehashed that version the new version and the older version then tried Phil's, tried wiping internal, external and still had errors. I had to bite the bullet and Odin back to stock 4.1.2 then jailbreak again and after a day lost I finally got it back up. I'm leaving TWRP 2.5 on it
