Today i wiped cache/dalvic cache/battery stats, then i started browsing the XDA Forum, suddenly the phone froze, then for two seconds a continious clicking noise appeared near the camera /cpu?/,after that the device restarted, but very quickly-without showing the siyah logo...This has happened once before, i was using ICS 4.0.4 with stock kernel...
Currently i'm with JB/siyah 6.0b5;
The device seems to be working just fine now,but i'm a little worried.Have you encountered this one before?

Nope, the only time I've ever heard a clicking noise was using the CM torch, I decided to try the 'high' setting. Clicking started so I turned the torch back to normal brightness. Never had it since. Keep an eye (ear?) on it.. If it happens again then I'd flash a fully stock ROM & see if it happens on full stock. Have you undervolted/overclocked at all? Could be something to consider if you have.

Yes, I have undervolted with two steps, using CPU ADJUSTER, but for the last three days the phone was OK.And the first time this thing happened to me I didn't even know what is undervolting...It could be from the kernel, I just flashed JB with Siyah 6.0b4 (the previous version)...I'll see how the device behaves without undervolting...If it happens again, i'll flash fully stock rom...

In the morning I usually do not even "wake up" my phone until I get to work to set it to silent. Occasionally, when I hit the power button to "wake up," the screen stays black. The light down by the three buttons at the bottom comes on, but the screen will not light up. I have to remove the battery to reboot, and then everything is fine. The battery is plenty charged when this happens. This morning the battery was at 80%.
This problem happened multiple times while my phone was still completely stock. I am running 2.1 now with the 435 build.
Any ideas what might cause this problem?
Bump.
Anyone?
Reflash it should fix the problem

Do you lose all stored data when reflashing?
Or, can you reflash without losing all your data?
You can back up pretty much everything with titanium backup (from the market its free). Then just reinstall it after you reflash and restore your backed up data.
Hope that helps!

This problem occurred before my phone was ever modded though, as stated in original post. I did reflash to the .435 ROM and the problem has happened once with the new ROM installed.
What is the possible cause of this problem?
Anyone using CM10, does your phone ever experience any lockups/reboots during or after a phone call? There's been a few cases where my phone would reboot during a call, and fail to make any calls for a brief period of time after. I can make or pickup the calls, but I can't hear anything and the other end can't hear anything. Rebooting or powering off does not resolve the issue, and it somehow starts working again sometime after I give up with it. It's been getting more and more consistent with the latest updates, and happens on the stock kernel, h0tcakez, and KKO.
Just wondering if it's my phone or CM10
All the jelly bean roms do that to my phone. I think it may be lack of an official jb kernal. Might be wrong about that, but I think I read that somewhere.

I have epinter's 2012-10-11 ROM for the Atrix 4G and occasionally I will not be able from the contact list. But the direct phone dialer still works. Sometimes reboot fixes it; sometimes not.
I get the exact same problem, and it drives me nuts, every time its happened the only fix has been to completely wipe the phone (unroot, rerooot etc. etc.) Driving me completely nuts. Also, the issue is present in both CM9 and CM10 and seems to happen at random.

I had one reboot during a call but thats about it. I been running this rom since 12/27...u might want to use FJ's kernel. This is how I flash all roms and it seems to have less or non reboots on JB. After you have flash the rom and ur device boots up, I go back to recovery before setting up my phone and wipe cache and dalvik cache and fix permissions. It seems that by doing that before setting my device, . ...helps a lot. GL

In the last few days my phone has continuously been switching itself off or freezing and the only way to get it to work again is pulling the battery or resetting it. The phone is stock, running Android 4.1.2 with firmware I9300XXELLA.
I did notice the phone had switched itself off a few times before now, but now it has got to the point where its happening all the time. I've also noticed that when the phone is booting back up after the lock screen appears the message "Currently unable to download please try again later" is coming up (which I think is more than likely the problem, but when I do attempt to update the phone it says its up to date).
So far I've tried running without an SD card, clearing Touchwiz homes data and switching off auto updates but these have made no difference. If anyone can offer any help it'd be really appreciated as the last thing I want to do is exchange the phone as it can be a pain in the butt.
Tried factory reset? I would suggest flashing the same firmware using odin and see if that makes any difference beforehands.

I've only ever used kies so will have to investigate Odin.
Out of curiosity is there actually a manual way to check for updates through Kies, as I can't for the life of me see how too?
If there is an update, kies would show you the next firmware details below your current one I think.

Hi, I'm laso getting the same issue with I9300XXELLA via Kies.
I've reset, cleared the cache and cancelled any restores but still it happening.
I'm going to downgrade to an older version to see if it resolves this.
I had to do a factory reset in the end and that fixed the problem. Still a bit annoying though as it took me a day to get everything back to how it was and like an idiot I forgot to backup my SMS messages and call history even though I had an app installed that could do it (SMS backup+).
Recommend one from ritesh or something. Works like charm every time I used it so far

Fixed
I wanted to test before posting but I ended up installing 4.1.1 then updating to 4.1.2 without wiping. Very strange.
As an update to this thread the problem came back even after I did a factory reset. I didn't get the unable to download error message but I did keep getting the odd freeze. However after a day of doing it the problem weirdly stopped happening and now 'touch wood' is fine again.
I also wiped cache and reset my phone running stock 4.1.2 on O2. The freezing problem seems to have gone, it's been a couple of days now and no issues. I should say that the only thing I haven't put on yet is Flash, I have a feeling it might be problematic?

SDS SYMPTOMS --------- Solution : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045
Ironically I think the reason my phone was freezing the odd time after I factory reset it was because I didn't have flash installed. After I sideloaded it the phone hasn't had any more issues (this could be a coincidence though).
Ive just ran the eMMC checker that nhariamine linked to and it says that my chip is susceptible to sudden death (VTU00M, revision 0xf1) and is an insane chip.
Does Samsung's most recent firmware address this, an if not can I get them to replace my phone even if it doesn't die?
The second day after I did a factory reset my phone froze once too and it hasn't since then(about a week) I'm still afraid of installing flash. I use Dolphin browser and I can set the user agent to iPad which loads HTML5 versions of videos etc, obviously this only works on sites that have this possibility. I guess I'm trying to wean myself of flash for now.

Out of curiosity what does eMMC checker say about your phone when you run it?
That it's an insane chip lol I was basically preparing myself for my phone to die. Since wiping my phone it's only froze once in the last week. I still haven't installed flash.

I have had this same issue for the past week and have just downloaded the eMMC checker and it seems I too have the phone that is susceptible to SDS.
I have noticed though that the phone only freezes when wifi is switched on though. I dont have any problems with wifi off. I downloaded lagfix from the playstore and ran that and it reduced the freezes from about 20 in a day to 3. I didnt realise wifi was the issue for me at that time though so it could be coincidental.
Updating Roms etc has not worked at all for me. If it keeps up for a few weeks i think i will need to change phones as its way too frustrating for a top tier phone to do this.
Same problem here
I've upgraded OTA few days ago... did a factory rest because the phone was slow... and yesterday the problem appeared out of no where!

Disabling "WiFi Power Save Mode" seems to solve it
1. Open up the Galaxy S3 phone dialer
2. Then dial *#0011#
3. Look for the “ServiceMode” screen and press the left menu button
4. Select “WiFi”
5. You should see that the “WiFi Power Save Mode” button is “ON” – now put it on “OFF”'
Re: Galaxy S 3 keeps freezing every 5 mins (50+ freezes a day)
I took this post from another thread, but it seems to be doing the trick for me too. Especially for those who are not rooted. Big thanks to linnuxxy

You could try this kernel, 5-08 build should fix it. In change log bsod=black screen of death.
Thank you, downloaded and installed will let you know how it works out.

The same thing happens to me but whats weirder is that it only happens when i go to the gym! It never happens anywhere else but there and it takes a long time to turn the phone back on. I've gotten to the point where i have to shut it off while I'm at the gym before it shuts itself off. So i cant really use it there anymore. Its really annoying. I also get a blue-screen but it doesn't happen as much as it use to.

I had sleep of death issues on the stock 4.1.2 ROM. I think usb debugging or something in developer options was causing it. Now I don't have sleep of death issues anymore. I have developer options and usb debugging disabled. I also checked disable wifi on sleep. Some posts said it was a wifi issue, others said that it an app compatibility issue. I'm not sure what causes it. I'm just happy that I no longer have issues.
Had the same issue. Switched to pa 3.99 RC 2.
I have the same issue on my phone, it happens over every single rom I have used, and I have tested just about all of them, (Pandroid, Carbon, Liquidsmooth, rootbox, beanstalk.. just to name a few) The only rom that did not SOD was the stock rom, but I have no idea why. My theory is something happens after the first week of use that is clogging up the phone in the system somewhere, because I never get a SOD until after a bit of use. I will be looking more into it after exams this week, and I will keep you guys posted in what I find.
No clue what the problem is, but over the last month my randomly phone gets into these periods where it absolutely crawls and almost stops responding entirely. Can only be fixed by rebooting. Latest JB OTA (98.72.16), rooted.
I have tried going into the task manager and killing apps but nothing seems to work. I've also frozen a few of the suspected offenders (such as Facebook) but no help there either. Cleaned Dalvik cache, booted to recovery and deleted cache too. I finally did a hard reset but the problem returned within a week.
How can I troubleshoot what app(s) are doing this? Is there stuff in the development menu that could be helpful?

try flashing an ota based rom through BMM. eg rage rom , jellywiz or even dwiz 1.0
