Now that the big unveiled is over is there enough of a change to be worth upgrading to?
The rumored specs were worth it, but the actual specs... Not so much

This is going to get closed... there's a thread for other devices. Anyway, before that happens, they were the expected upgrades. 5.7" 1080p display, Snapdragon 800, 13MP camera. I like the Note series, I will upgrade to it once development is active.

To me the note 3 looks sickkkk but under the hood is alright does it at least have all the feature of the s4. Seems like s4 packed with way more tweaks

Expect it to be locked down like the S4 on Verizon. Specs are kind of meh when considering there hasn't been lag in phones for probably about a year now.

Yupp, but I'm always for a better screen and slimmer phone. I'm just hoping Hashcode's safestrap method for the S4 can be quickly implemented on the N3, plus if he gets kexec support working then we don't even really need an unlocked bootloader.
I expect the Verizon version to be rooted not long after the phone is released. Unlocking or jail breaking might take much longer.

Yeah, rooting is never a problem obviously. It's looking like we'll be going the S4/Moto route, no unlocking. Just safestrap/kexec.
That seems likely but maybe we will be surprised.
I won't be upgrading.
The human eye can only see so much so I think 1080P on a phone is pointless.
Running top and sar on the command line has yet to show me that I need more processing power.
More mega pixels on a camera mean nothing.
If I was still using my Galaxy Nexus I would get the Note 3, but it seems to me the only real upgrade is a few nice software features that may or not come down to the Note 2.
I can wait for the Note 4.
I will certainly upgrade... Unless that vision of the new nexus turns into a real life unicorn.

Our phone will get 4.3 sometime this year, well at least an international build but it's the same thing really.
3GB of RAM is pointless when our phone barely use a gig maybe a gig and a half.
Extra storage would be nice but with an SD card my note 2 currently has 80GB of storage so....
Can you seriously see pixels on your note 2? If you can then by all means, but if you can't then you won't notice anything different with the screen.
Again, why do you want a faster phone that will just eat battery quicker? Do you actually see lag on the note 2?
MPs mean nothing. Unless you own a 4K TV which in that case you have more than enough money to upgrade.
New battery is only 100mAh bigger than the current but you won't notice as the screen/CPU will eat up more battery.
I know your drawing at straws when you use the lines to describe the same thing, which isn't even true since it's the same size as the note 2 with a thinner bezel. Oh, and the last thing I want is my device to be lighter this thing already feels cheap enough.
Had an IR blaster on my tablet before. Absolutely never used it. More of a gimmick than anything.
S pen is basically the same, with small improvements which won't matter since 99% of us won't use it anyways.
I know I seem like an ass but someone needs to play devils advocate when everyone else out there is spewing about how amazing this device will be without comparing the specs to current phones. Its a note 2 with minimal upgrades, I personally expected more.

I never said it wasn't an upgrade but we are no longer talking going from single or dual core to quad core, or from 512 MB of RAM to 2 GB.
And 1 mm thinnger and 12g lighter is nothing you are going to notice. If you want to purchase it go right ahead, but I don't feel any of this is worth a $700 upgrade.
I would love to hear your criticism, if you would rather withhold it, then so be it.
I have read the reviews, they are all saying what I listed, it's a new phone with new specs, nothing spectacular. Actually, most of it is just about the software, which we will get in an software upgrade. Again, please point out my flaws, I didn't come here to talk to myself.
I wonder what software ported from the N3 will make it to the N2 given Verizon's glacially slow OTAs.

when you get used to the large screen, there is no going back, from my experience.
my friend bought the s3 and im like meh its cool and all but that difference
on screen real estate has me hooked. i didnt get the buzz until i had 2 days with
the note.
i thought viewing excel documents on the s2 was a huuuuuge difference coming from the torch.

I just recently switched from the Iphone4 to the Galaxy Note....I was really planning on getting the S3 when it came out (I bought Note outright no contract from Craigslist) and the more I play with the Note...the less I want to switch. I mean they have the same specs except for the Note a bigger screen. Plus with the custom roms you can have almost everything a S3 has as far as features...why spend the extra cash for less screen and a few other features?
Oh and there is NO WAY IN HELL I will ever go back to Apple!

They don't have the same specs.
i717 Note: Qualcomm S3 1.5ghz processor Adreno 220 GPU, 1gb RAM
i747 GSIII: Qualcomm S4 1.5ghz processor Adrena 225 GPU, 2gb RAM, Better cameras (Burst and HDR shot, 720p front facing), Gorilla Glass 2.
Although the features on the SIII are nice, they aren't enough for me to upgrade just yet.
Perhaps once 1080p screens become standard I will upgrade.
I would wait for note 2. I really like my note (i717) despite problem with custom radio for T-Mobile.

In actual tests on You Tube the Note's camera actually outperformed most others, including the S3, in picture quality.
Definitely gonna stick with the Note. I like to turn heads when using it in public. And nobody I know has it which makes it that much cooler. I can live without the slight upgrade in processing and ram.

If I hadn't picked up the Note, er, if the Note had never been produced, I would for sure be all over the GSIII, but I couldn't be happier with my Note. The GSIII is a great looking phone imho, but the screen size of the Note plus the SPen make it a winner for me. My first Android was the Captivate, followed by the Infuse, and now my Note. Needless to say, Samsung has my loyalty and it will take a huge offering to displace them. My next phone will definitely be the Note 2. I just don't see another phone topping the Note 2 based purely on my current Note.
I like the hardware style of HTC phones, but they need to make a 5.3+" AMOLED screened phone with a stylus to displace Samsung and the Note for me. Not to mention, bootloader unlocking is just something I'd rather not have to ever deal with, and I can't pull myself to stay on stock software anymore. I know it's simple enough, but it's still a nuisance to deal with bootloader unlocking. I haven't played with the newer versions of Sense either, but my phones always end up losing manufacturer overlays anyways, and so far, Touchwiz has been the most appealing for me as well.
Same goes for Motorola, I like the direction they've gone with hardware on the RAZR line, but I need this big, beautiful screen and pen, not to mention a removable back. I also have hated Motorola overlays all along, as it is just ugly and laggy on every Motorola I've played with. They also have the stupid bootloader issues that keep me at bay.
I really wish Nokia wouldn't have been so dumb and had adopted both Android and WP7, because again, I like their hardware. Maybe they'll open up to Android in the future, but that won't happen before the Note 2 is here.
All that being said, I have no complaints with Samsung hardware, as every phone I have had from them has been rock solid and sexy despite people always bashing their use of plastic. I suppose the only qualm I have is how the back of the GSIII is glossy and the Note 2 will likely follow in it's design footsteps, though I don't mind the back of my white Note at all...I just prefer the textured back of my Infuse or metal on my Captivate. I really wish the general public would stop bashing Samsung for using plastic though, I don't see it as detrimental to build quality at all, and no matter what people say, metal still scratches, scuffs and dents, and plastic still holds up great in drops.
If Samsung wanted to annihilate the market and forever hold my loyalty, they can feel free to read this post and make my ideal Note 2 =] :
*5.5-6" Super AMOLED Plus HD 1080p display
-if they could find a way, make it matte glass while keeping HD clarity...which would be tough, but possible in the future probably.
*GNex styling with textured back, matte plastic instead of glossy.
-or go a different route with something exotic...carbon fiber, ceramic, magnesium, etc. I would pay a premium price for premium materials. =]
*Full Wacom pen functionality/increased pen software integration.
*Even though MHL is getting better, mini hdmi out would be nice like Motorola has on some phones
*Bigger battery obviously, or even next gen battery technology when it comes to consumer devices.
*Next gen Exynos with LTE capability and an increase in RAM, which RAM increase is inevitable.
*Multiple internal storage options like the GSIII, I would pounce all over 64 GB internal with up to 128 GB with expandable.
*Padfone and/or Atrix style docking options. Not necessary, but would be awesome. I would like to see something like that Ubuntu docking setup, as it would make phones of the future truly all in one devices. Imagine having only one device with only peripherals to expand functionality...yes, the future will be awesome.
All of that is really unnecessary with how awesome I think my current Note is, but if they include any of that you can bet I will be throwing my money at them.

Four words, you might be wrong. With lots of proof pointing to the ASUS Nexus Tegra 3 Tablet getting Jelly Bean first there is speculation Jelly Bean will be for tablets only just like Honeycomb. It actually makes sense cause they had tablets running Gingerbread and to set tablets apart they gave us Honeycomb now theres ICS which is very similar to Honeycomb and I think Google is smart enough to know they need something else to keep people interested in Android tablets. Who knows but if you go back and read old post about Honeycomb before it was announced by Google everyone thought they would get they update on their devices but when it was anounced it was a let down cause it was only for tablets and I am willing to bet the next Android OS will also be a tablet only OS. I would also bet that every other new Android OS will be Tablet only from now on. But hey maybe I am wrong.

Three words, you are wrong. ICS was designed to make it simple for developing for both phones and tablets, hence why tablet mode is activated by a simple dpi change. ICS was made so Google doesn't have to deal with two different versions of software for tablets and phones, and both modes are built right in to one software version.
Plus, in the online Google play store, they just changed the galaxy nexus for sale to show hints at jelly bean, like the screen shown with a new stock wallpaper and different looking search bar, even right in the text description. It will be for both phones and tablets.
Edit: Here, needed to look this up: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ean-will-be-coming-to-the-galaxy-nexus-first/

I was set on the Droid DNA. Even had a work around DNA memory and battery to accommodate the DNA. After stopping by verizon, i have jump ship to Note 2.
Comparing My GS3 with DNA
Holding both phone, DNA feel less solid and cheap for some reason. From all the vids and pictures, the phone look amazing.
1080p didnt wow me enough, my phone looks brighter.
Not a Fan of Sense 4+, HTC have nothin over samsung motions. I am so use to swipe to call and text.
I do like the back soft touch tho. Also like the red grills. The phone is too long to have a power button on top.
Glad i didnt preorder the DNA, would have been disappointed. Note 2 here i come!
Sense just ruins it. If it was running pure android, it would be amazing.

Agree with you there. GS4 more worth the wait than to get the Droid DNA now. Either get Galaxy Note 2 now or get Galaxy S4 later.
I played with one as well and I was not impressed. I thought the jump to 1080p would be similar to 720p like last year but I was mistaken. And after you get past the screen it just felt normal; I have no desire to use it again. But with the Note 2 I've used it 5 times at various locations while I wait for my pre-order to ship. I'm actually eager to play with it again. I finally figured out how to use multi-view and I can't wait until that feature is fully opened to all apps.
All said I just ordered a 64gig micro SD card to seal my purchase. Just one more week!
I felt that the display contrast, black levels, and color saturation are disappointing on the DNA. Now I am debating the note 2 vs waiting on GS4.

I have the confidence that the Note 2 will keep me entertained when the S4 comes out. Plus I don't see the S4 coming out over 5 inches and it will not have the S-Pen. The one positive is that we should have a sneak peak at the Note 3 when the S4 is released if Samsung follows the same formula.
I had the US Cellular version of the Note 2 for a week, and I've had my DNA since yesterday. So far this is what I've noticed:
Build quality seems superior on the DNA. The rounded glass screen, soft touch plastic, aluminum red grilles, compared to the slippery and cheaper looking plastic of the Note 2.
The display was a huge selling point, and while I agree the resolution is amazing in the sense that I can not see any pixelation, it doesn't seem as vibrant or bright as the Note 2. I wouldn't consider the screens to be a deciding factor.
The battery life is pretty horrible on the DNA. With the Note 2 and my previous Thunderbolt w/ extended battery, I only charged my phone at night and went unplugged from 7AM to 11PM with anywhere from 40-60% battery left with light/moderate use. With the DNA, I went 6 hours with moderate use before the battery dipped down to 30%. If you get the DNA, you WILL need to keep the phone tethered to a charger. I'll have to keep it plugged in at work, and when I get home from work.
Storage isn't a huge issue for me as I don't use close to the 16GB capacity, but it's always nice having more memory, especially expandable memory.
Signal strength. I can't really compare the two as the Note 2 was on US Cellular, but I can say that the DNA gets excellent signal strength, both on Verizon and on WiFi. I get WiFi signal in places where my Thunderbolt did not, and so far coverage with Verizon seems to be a tad better than the Thunderbolt. As a comparison, my Thunderbolt consistently gets better signal strength than my friends GS3 on Verizon.
The speaker in the DNA is amazing, I had it turned up all the way and there was no distortion at all. I couldn't believe how loud and clear it was!
Ergonomics. The DNA is awesome in this area, with the rounded glass edges, curved back, and soft touch back this phone feels AWESOME in the hand. Unlike the Note 2, it doesn't feel like it's going to slip and fall. It's also usable with one hand, unlike the Note 2 which you can only use a portion of the screen when holding it in one hand.
I also noticed that the Note 2 is slightly too wide to fit in most cup holders in cars, while the DNA fits in perfectly.
Hmm I thought it looked slick - much more than the Note 2 which really isn't slick looking when held to your head lol. Still going with the Note 2. I can't easily reach the status bar and the buttons while using it one handed (without changing grip and feeling awkward) - but I like the extra screen space and always use my Incredible held landscape 2 handed anyways.
I definitely can't say it wouldn't be smart to buy the DNA though. I personally would over the GS3 - mostly because of its much better processor.

I thought it was pretty cool, but honestly maybe too thin. I like my phone to be small, but not like paper thin... Even holding it attached to the display it felt like it might fall out of my hand at any time. That along with a tiny battery and no SD card slot will keep me away. I will say that the display is quite beautiful though.
I picked up the DNA thinking I could test it and if I don't like it I could always return it and hopefully by then the Note 2 would be out. But right now I'm not sure if I want to return it. I really do like this phone a lot, but (and I can't believe I'm saying this) I do miss Touchwiz. Samsung has really been doing some great things with it. I also like the idea of the S-Pen a lot.
I do have the Note 10.1 but I still think I may want that same experience in my pocket. But the DNA really is nice so I'm not sure. I do hate that damn power button on the top though. . .

Since you already have a Note 10.1 I don't think I would have 2 Note devices. My plan was to get the DNA and keep my Nexus 7 or get the Note 2 and sell my Nexus 7. After playing with the DNA it felt like another phone, nothing special. After playing with the Note 2 I was sold. There is no doubt in my mind that the Note 2 will last until the Note 3 comes out. I can't say the same about the DNA when the S4 comes out with 1080p display, Sd card clot and removable battery.

The Exynos 5 is faster (at least quad vs quad) but there's no way that the DNA is going to be slow or unusable in less than a year. People who don't need much storage will be fine.

But then by the time the GS4 comes out, the Note 3 will likely be coming out fairly soon etc
Imo its to the point where upgrading is not a huge gain anymore. None of these new phones are a "huge" upgrade over the s3. Im still debating on getting the note2, this will probably be my last upgrade for awhile. All these little gimmick add-ons are just wooing folks into getting the latest and greatest every 6mo. Its beginning to look like a waste of money imo. I honestly do not think the dna comes close to being a worthy 200 upgrade over my s3 and the same goes for the note2 @ 300. The **** is getting rediculous! The s3 is powerful enough to handle udates for years to come, but its already been superceeded by devices that are not much better imo. Quad core is not going to be a huge upgrade...ram is much more important along with gpu. 4.8" screen is plenty big...end rant.

I don't think it's worth upgrading every 6 months (I never did), but if you have an available upgrade, the DNA's gpu is twice as fast as the S3. Not really being utilized yet, but within 2 years it very well could be. RAM actually doesn't matter that much since programs tend to be small and compact. 2GB is plenty and having a quad core means you can play a game with no background task like facebook getting in the way. Our phones easily have much more than 4 threads going on at once.
I'm patiently waiting for the c6806 but now that the galaxy note 3 is being announced and will be out early October , i might just jump ship and buy the note .Waiting for the LTE version is just painfully slow!
Build quality & the display is too small.
In the end the hardware pro's (ram, slightly higher clocking, cam) of the SGN3 are not compensating this for my requirements, as the performance of the XZU is still astonishing and i'm using my phone only for snapshots.
But your case is exactly showing the becalming situation Samsung has - people love to buy it anyway.
i almost bought the c6802 and live with the 3g connection but im pretty sure i'll be banging my head if the LTE version comes out, blaming myself that i should have waited .
LTE to me is the now technology and 3G is just not acceptable in my vocabulary .

Absolutely not.
I've seen the conferences yesterday, and both Sony and Samsung haven't entertained me.
I mean, Sony has great products but tends to lay them out without any heart at all.
On the other end, Samsung has no innovation at all, but from their point of view it seems they're presenting the Holy Grail to the public year after year.
I have an S3, which is a great device, but on the right and on the bottom the "metal" bezel cut itself for no reason at all. It is 1 year old. And I paid FULL PRICE for this. And by full I mean that it costed me almost as much as a 6833.
I don't want Samsung to fill me with bs telling me the SPen is excellent, that the battery is interchangeable, that this, that that. I already know all that.
And i don't give a damn anymore.
ZU is progression, SW2 too, hell even the SBH52 impressed me more than the N3.
I'm gonna get on board with Sony, and whenever I'll see a guy with his Note 3 I'll say "Hey man, nice phone, I hope you're happy with what you got", not feeling envious, not feeling sorry for not buying it.
Because in the end, what YOU feel with your phone matters, not that extra 0.1ghz or that 1gb of ram.
Let's face it, about 1 out of 1000 Note3 or S4 users will root or even use their device to the fullest. The rest of them will simply feel happy that they can update their Facebook status saying 'I have a Note 3! Sweet! ", until they're not happy again when their friends buy something more powerful/stylish/popular.
I prefer being a 1 percenter, with a device that makes me smile, than being a 99 one, with the regret that I could have bought something more.
But hey, that's just my 2 cents.

There are 2 face on that medal you know...
On one face, Samsung hasn't always been keen with developers, not releasing sources and all, BUT thousands of people buy those, and as a result a lot of developers choose the device they develop on based on popularity, and on the fact that developing there would be more of a challenge.
On the other face, Sony has always been open with the developer community, but their popularity has started to grow big not that long ago, so we might have on the ZU the same level of devs there are on the Z.
As a matter of fact, some of them already started (just take a look on the Android development section), and that is even before the LTE version launched.
Let's wait for UK, US, Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc. all have this device on their shelves, I have big expectations.

well, after viewing the Note 3 "coming out" party yesterday, I decided I am not interested in it...
I had a note 1, and a Note 2, which was a major upgrade to the note 1.
Fantastic phone, and I was hoping the Note 3 would be a major "upgrade" as well; but, the only upgrades, CPU speed, 3 gigs of Ram, and 13 MP camera isnt going to make the experience on the Note 3 that much better than the note 2.
I've been watching the Xperia Z Ultra since it came out, and, it looks like a fantastic phone; I am a big guy, so the size doesnt scare me, but I am waiting to see which US carriers will be carrying it.
I have owned at least 50 cell phones in my life, but mysteriously, NONE of them have been Sony phones, but I think this will change in the next 30 days.
It doesnt seem like there is alot of development on this phone yet, but, since many note 2 owners feel similiar to me, I am certain that there will be a large groupl that will move to this phone, once some US carriers are announced.
The quality of this phone seems fantastic; not sure if no flash for the camera will affect picture quality, and, hopefully, easy root/bootloader unlocking is just around the corner, since the sound from that tiny speaker appears to be lousy as well, but nothing that ViperMod or a different kernel wont fix!
The main problem SGN2 had and SGN3 as per first hands on, pics and vids also seems to have is, that - even if it is already to small for me as an Note 2 user - they're not making proper use of the screen size with view to UI on stock ROM.
In the end the Note 2 was and is just a sized up Galaxy.
And 2nd market (custom roms) is not a criterion on this topic for me, because if i have to customize the the product from day 1 to meet my needs, then there's something wrong and i'll better wait for the right deal.

Another user on another forum posted that maybe a real change will be seen when all S3s end their contract.
That's true for the S4 (they sold a lot less than what they were expecting), I was expecting it and I didn't fall for that.
That's true for the N3 too, as is a specced up S4 with SPen functions.
It will sell regardless of all this thoughts, but I could bet 1 out of 5 previous N2 owners will buy this N3, and the other 4 will scout around for a better choice or wait for the N4.
That's what I was planning to do skipping the iPhone 4 for the 5 (having the 3G), but Samsung stunned me with the S3 and I jumped ship.
I waited for a big change from the S3 to the S4, but I was ready to wait for the N3 this time.
Sony stunned me since they presented the ZU, I fell in love and that's it.
The only thing that would make me love even more this device would be having a stock-Google Play Edition.
That would be AWESOME.
Last but not least for the fact that we won't need implementation for the SPen, because the screen accept pens and pencils on its own...

Pretty much agree with most posts. I've had the Note & Note 2 (using HTC One now) & the Note 3 doesn't do it for me. I really hate Touchwiz. Everything about it annoys me so I've run custom roms on all my Samsung phones. I don't use the s pen at all either so it just sits there.
I like the direction Sony are heading. I would prefer a smaller bezel but I really like the waterproof design & the minimal additions to Android.
I really don't see why Samsung are the Android leaders...

Advertising, advertising, and advertising. Oh, I forgot about advertising.
They could sell a smart ring for your toe advertising it as the next companion for the summer for getting rid of fungus because it has a 5mpx camera that scans the pavement before you set your foot on it.
Everybody would simply love it.

Have both. Sheer screen size is biggest plus for Mega. It actually is a quite capable smartphone and an even better media consumption device.
For what I do, the note 3 can't be beat though. It has capabilities that mega lacks (spen). Fantastic screen (though size wasn't quite what I wanted). And is just a performance beast. (Though who out there will really utilize all that brawn).
Unless you need some functions that the note provides and the Mega lacks, I personally feel that you would not gain anything by changing. And, might be a little let down going to a smaller screen.

I have to agree, I'm happy with the Mega. Also I just got the Mega, and have to make a little sense and not switch so fast haha!
Additionally I've been checking out the forums for Note 3, and for now, don't look like the development is much more exciting, and I would really miss the big screen.
I guess it comes down a lot to functionality, because if you feel the S-Pen is a useful thing, then Note is best that's for sure. As Mad383Max said also, the power you get with the Note 3 (or any phone of that kind, like the ZUltra) is for now quite underused, so don't fall into it just for marketing words!
Plus the mega screen will have brighter whites then the anoled screen that the note 3 has..and the mega has great daytime viewing due to it's bright screen which is not the case with a anoled screen..maybe better viewing angles with a anoled screen..but the screen in the mega is not bad at angles either..but what ever makes people happy in what choice of phone they do decide on is great..but I am very attached to the mega.

Oh okay then samsung must have improved it on the note 3 which is good. :good:
i upgraded to note 3 which i sold and kept the Mega and i have a s4..........TW on the Mega is very bad and looks magnified rather than resized. i know trust me as i saw it soon as i turned it on for the first time. the screen is quite good on the Mega but mine sticks alot especially when using keyboard. i suffer frequent hangups with TW and I am aiding a friend to see if can make 4.3 a reality using the OmniRom route........... This device would absolutely fly with AOSP/CM based rom on it.
I am getting another note 3 but not sure if i will switch..............Mega is back in box till i decide as s4 is no slouch but i miss the bigger screen.
For those who has both note 3 and Mega, can you post a pic of batteries?
I was aimed at S3 and waited for it fom beginning of the year. In the mean time I 'stumbled' on Mega and now do not want another ..
Unless the mega gets AOSP like slimbean, I will be switching as soon as AOSP gets developed for the note 3. I'm mainly using my note 2 at the moment but missing the large screen of the mega.

But then, Note with AOSP isn't worth it's price, no?
I mean all the features that make it good disapear then, and it is basically a small Mega, without the benefits.
Maybe better to be patient with the Mega
No offence to touchwiz lovers but the "features" Samsung has developed are utter garbage and for novelty at best. Examples...
1. Floating cursor aka airview....whats the point? The touchscreen on the phone is meant to be touched!
2. S-apps....slow and can be replaced by various other apps in Google play
3. Multi window....Halo on AOSP is way better.
4. Big retarded icons like users are coke bottle glass wearing 80year olds by default and no way to change it unless you use a different launcher which renders the unique Samsung gimmicks useless.....this drives me nuts the most.
These are just a few gripes of how a hardware company that spends so much on R&D can get it so wrong on the software side. Samsung had the head of Cyanogenmod at their disposal for 2 years and swandered good talent.
This is why despite the awesome hardware Samsung makes, I wont buy it till I can get AOSP onto it. I'm thinking of getting the Ultra Z as a stop gap since Paranoid Android has been developed for it. Ultra Z = Fast specs, large screen, custom rom, waterproof.....why not?

Hey, you are preaching to a believer!
My message to you was because Mega to Note 3, don't you keep Sammy crap?
Touchwiz is acceptable on the Mega, and I use exactly zero features that come with it, but that's not the "only" selling point of the Mega, but it is for the Note family (with its S-Pen), so what would be the point with AOSP on Samsung hardware in that case.
Another thing that we have to understand, is that grass is always greener elsewhere. I used to have Nexus 4 before the Mega, and I can tell you that forum messages saying : "Hey, tired of AOSP blue and black, need MIUI, need TouchWiz/HTC port, etc."
So yeah, I went to Sammy for the big screen and battery life, and now have to put up with it's software as well, I guess that's life ^^
(Oh, and if I could afford it, I would get Ultra Z as well, haha!)
My point was whichever Sammy device get AOSP first (I'm hoping Mega but it's not popular enough). I'm addicted to Samsung phones since the first Galaxy S thus hesitant getting the Ultra Z. Even though Samsung has treated it's loyal users bad, like a battered spouse, I keep coming back for more abuse, hoping one day to be treated better.

Can I pick your brains, please guys?
I am torn as to which to buy: Note or Mega.
I, like you love the Mega, have played around with many a live display model in the shops and am blown away by the screen.
I have poor sight and appreciate the huge keypad when using it as a phone and also the large keypad when texting. I know I don't have to use the KP to text, I could talk too, but I find the speech recognition makes too many errors.
My dilemma is mainly this: I have been frightened away from the standard 8 GB Mega as the OS takes up almost half of this. As apps are not getting any smaller and (without rooting) apps cannot be stored on the SD card, the advice by the professional reviewers is to buy the 16GB version.
However, nearly all of the 16GB versions I have seen on Amazon and ebay are not. For some odd reason, when I check with the seller, they mysteriously claim something like "oh, sorry, mate, that's an error". Even where the 16GB claim appears in the listing more than once....
More than a bit naughty...
It seems the genuine 16GB listings have a much higher price, around £440. That's a huge premium to pay, when Amazon are selling the 8GB version for £280.
So, for those of us who don't want to get into rooting the phone, is 8GB enough? Should I buy 16GB?
What do you advise?
Thanks in advance.

I'd say 8 Gb is enough if you get a memory card to go along with it (I have a 32 Gb).
According to my experience with my 16 Gb Nexus 4, that was really feeling small quickly. Right now my Mega's internal 16 Gb are far from full although I have been piling up the crap in there (and also using a light ROM).
So If the price of a 32 or even 64 Gb memory card should still play in your favor, I think 8Gb internal is usable
not saying i wont possibly break down and buy it at some point BUT..
1. with Jasmine Rom 2.4.1 i have all the software features and will continue to get more faster
2. Note 4 is bigger and heavier and was not expecting that for the same size battery and screen
3. i will not notice the processor bump as my N3 doesnt slack now
4. Finer print scanner - i have zero need for such a thing
5 Camera - this was the only feature that made me want it but i have the camera from a software prospective already and wasnt enough to make me jump
i am in NO WAY DISSING the Note 4 and if i werent on a custom Note 3 i would jump in a second. i just cant get myself to spend the money on it at this time and possibly never.
i have a Macbook that runs around $1,300 and when they release a new one with a better front camera and small processor bump i am not going to spend $1,300 again for such a small change.
sad day as i was really looking forward to it but ooh well

Also, the N4 is a big upgrade. I bet you were drooling over the Retina screens of the more recent Macbooks when they were released.
Absolutely amazing camera (front and back), snapdragon 805, QHD screen, more memory... Leaves the N3 in the dust!

uh, so why didn't you post this in the note 3 forum? it has absolutely nothing to do with the note 4.

i wasnt trying to cause an argument or troll. i have a long history here with ZERO trolling of any kind and always try to help others.
i was simply posting in the Note 4 section about the Note 4 and what happened to me today and getting feedback from others. i cant be the only one in this situation of really wanting it but not seeing the $$$ value in coming from Note 3. as i said i would jump in a second coming from anything else like a S4 or Note 2.
Not to diss you in any shapr or form but...why didn't you just post this in the Note 3 forum? When I saw the title I thought was a mistype lol.
Thanks for making your point! I shall go enjoy my Note 4 now
P.S. I do see what you are saying, my friend is in the same boat. If I had the Note 3 I wouldn't jump either unless rom development simplied died with in the next 6 months
It leaves the G3 in the dust, but the N3 is still great and seems the N4 is not enough jump for an early upgrade. 64bit 20nm next year IMO will be.

i should have added that if it had Lollipop installed i would have probably bought it while i was there. i know its coming but i also know that i would be frustrated waiting while HTC and Motorola get their Lollipops on 1+ year old devices before i would see it on my N4 much like my N3.
maybe i shouldnt have posted this thread here and so forgive me anyone that i have upset but this was a day just like the release day of the S4 and N3 where i was excited and was there to be one of the first and i couldnt (at this time) spend the cash while holding my N3.

So what are the benefits to 64 bit in the near future? I'm running on the notion that the 64 bit note 4 won't be available for another year and widespread app support is probably another year to 2 years further down the line? I get the benefit of the 20nm process in terms of power consumption and more efficient battery use (though the Note 4 would get me through the day so does it really matter?), but are we really going to see big benefits from the 64 bit architecture before our 2 year contract is up on the note 4?

N3 is still a good phone, was my goto for the longest time. It was way ahead of it's time when released, and still puts some current flagships to shame (you know which ones I'm talking about).
I just feel with the release of the N4, Nexus 6, 1+1, etc, it's put the N3 as a mid-range phablet and once we get root on the N4 the EOL for the N3 will speed up significantly.

good points and why i stated "not at this time" with my purchase because likely in the future when i get bored and there is root and exciting things happening with the N4 i may jump to it.
i cant get too excited for N6 at all simply because i dont feel being Vanilla it will have those phablet software features i want to make it more than a big phone. we shall see though in that one.

He's still not 100% confident about his decision. So it's his way to reassure himself that he make the right decision, or asking others to make him change his mind to return N3 and get N4.

hahaha i guess my title was misleading as i have had N3 since release date and so i just left with what i walked in with. i am sure something will happen to make me switch at some point
with the resale value of the note 3 I dont see why not if you have the upgrade available and are not in the situation of losing unlimited.
I personally love the fingerprint scanner, i thought at first it would be a gay gimmick thing and not work how I use them on laptops but its everything I wanted. I use a complex pattern normally to unlock my phone so being able to easily do the fingerprint works wonders for me. I also tend to like new ish and be with the curve (because you can never be ahead in the existing electronics industry)
just my . 02

Very true on the N5 and a whole year to enjoy the N4. Point was relative to the N3 and early upgrade expense.
64bit makes a HUGE difference without app rewrites for it. Look at the cpu power of the 5433 and the A7 and A8. It makes a huge computational difference.
That said, the only practical benefit is for game emulators for me, since they are 99% cpu driven.

Ah. Haven't really tried game emulators. I really only play cross me color. Thanks for the info!

i am in the opposite court and understand what you are saying for your needs. i remember when i use to buy new laptops every year because they just kept getting faster and i could feel the difference with each new purchase. that changed a few years ago when suddenly every upper level machine met my needs and the new ones although faster on specs wouldnt allow me to see anything new and exciting since i wouldnt be pushing them to see it.
phones like N3 have in that perspective meet my needs already and now i look for new pieces of tech like the stylus the Note series has or its IR blaster, great phablet specific features, and interaction with the rest of my Samsung electronics.
i dont know what will make me jump to a new phone these days because they havent announced what it is yet. the camera i know is better and would be nice but i just didnt see a "need" today.
i appreciate the respectful replies to this thread and as mentioned above i could sure be convinced to buy it sooner than later.
thanks
As long as your happy, all is good.
People who bashed the OP need to chill out. Many come to this particular forum to help them make a decision about buying the phone or not. This thread offers a diff perspective. It belongs here.
