[Q] Bootlooping - need quick advice - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Updgraded to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 via Kies. Un-rooted, stock SGH-I777. Stuck in bootloop now at AT&T logo. I already did the wipe data cache in recovery mode with no luck so it leaves me to factory reset as my next option. I've spent several hours browsing through the forum already. Do any of the below allow me to keep data?
1) Use Odin and stock firmware - downloaded the UCMD8 tar file
2) Root, install kernel w/ CWM to use backup functionality. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894)
Just need a point in the direction I need to go, I'll handle the rest.
If the result is all the same (i.e. data loss), I'll use this issue as an opportunity to put a custom ROM on my phone.
Thanks!

Yes, most likely a wipe data/factory reset performed in recovery would correct the problem, but you will lose some system data. Which specific things are you worried about losing? You won't lose your photos, or any data from applications installed from the play store.
You are going to have to perform a wipe data/factory reset to use odin and the stock UCMD8 firmware. In fact, at this point it is probably the only way out.

U could try to re Odin the firmware first. Not sure where ya got it from, but it should be a no wipe. But if that doesn't solve ur problem, then ya have a few options--- Odin a custom kernel (like AJK), and then u could Mount usb storage through recovery and backup ur stuff to ur pc. Then try to see if it will boot up without looping. If it still loops then u need to go back into recovery and wipe data/factory reset. Reboot. And it should be good. Or if ya don't care about ur data, then just reboot to recovery and wipe data and reboot.

[Q] Mass Force Closures / Need a TAR file

I don't know exactly what caused the issue. Maybe some recent apps since that was all that I had installed. I was running the latest AOKP ICS 4-28-12 and Siyah 3.1x. I forget the exact kernal number but it wasn't the version that I read about phone bricking (R6?).
So I wake up this morning and unlock my screen and there are popups for everything force closing. Not just foreground running apps but everything including background running apps. Every time an app autorestarts in the background the force close error msg pops up again. It was running fine just 6 hours prior since I was using it before bed.
Reboot. Same issue. CMW Recovery. Wipe cache/dalvik. Reflash AOKP and GApps. Reboot. Same force closing issue. WTF. Attach USB to comp and try to move a different ROM to my Internal SD but no dice. Comp isnt recognizing phone now. [email protected]#K! Reboot into download mode. All the ROMS I downloaded are ZIP format instead of TAR format. So this time my dumb self uses Odin to reflash the TAR file I used to root my phone. After this I realize "that TAR doesn't have a ROM attached to it."
So now I can only boot into download mode. Can't load CMW. Sadly I had to leave for work and I'm without my phone until I get home at midnight. I FEEL SO DISCONNECTED! ='(
Will a simple file conversion program be sufficient to convert ZIP to TAR so I can use ODIN to flash them later? Or will I have to follow the unbrick instructions to return to stock and then start over? And after reading about that one version of Siyah bricking phones I think I'm going to leave the NEAK kernal that comes with AOKP.
Thanks for your assistance!
No, you can't build a tar from a zip.
I don't and have never used aokp or cm9 or miui, but in my experience, when you start getting massive force closes, and if a fix permissions in recovery doesn't fix it, then you're best off starting over from scratch. If you have a working nandroid backup, use that. Otherwise, flash back to stock, wipe data/factory reset, and reinstall your rom from scratch.
There are plenty of tar and one-click downloaders available. See links in my signature.
I found this on the i9100 forums, instructive. Instead of installing a stock samsung firmware and kernel, just download a rooted package (maybe go back to Gingerbread for i777) then go from there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
I'm interested to know how this recovery works for you, keep us posted! Best luck!
Any idea what would randomly cause the issue of mass force closures so I can prevent this from occuring again?
Did you do a Full Wipe when you first installed AOKP? I have ran into issues before with Rom Control by just wiping cache and dalvik and under the OP of AOKP Task even states coming from aokp or cm9 you Should be good but more likely than not, I would do a complete wipe *Factory Reset under CWM*. And when you restore your data with TiBu just restore missing apps and their data. Do not restore system data as that will be a major cause of mass FC... So first things first, I would use Odin to go back to UCKH7 *hopefully with CWM and Root* and than go back to Aokp since in my opinion is the best rom for our phones now.

I didn't do a factory wipe. I'm thinking I'll just do a factory wipe for any new rom installs. It's a little more work but if it helps prevent this sort of error I'll do it. And after reading about the bricking with that one version of Siyah I'm going to wait a couple weeks before any new installs to make sure other people have tested it first.

Well the first attempt didnt work using kernel + rooted UCKH7. Odin did everything it was supposed to but the phone locks at the initial Galaxy S II I-9100 ! screen. =(
Second attempt using I777_UCKH7_OCD_Root_No_BL and I'm able to get past the Galaxy S II I-9100 screen and the original AT&T boot animation shows but after the boot animation it just continuously reboots. ='(
Third attempt I tried Kernel + cache + rooted UCKK6 and after the reboot it actually rebooted into recovery mode. I thought that was a good sign so I reboot the phone normally and same issue as above. I try to reboot into recovery mode (Vol + - and pwr) again but it doesn't come up now. ='(
Forth attempt I tried Kernel + cache + rooted UCKK6 again. It reboots into recovery mode and I select the Factory Wipe option and reboot. There's a long delay after the AT&T boot animation and finally my phone starts up as if it was stock.
What a freakin nightmare! I was so worried my phone was a goner. None of the other ROMs I tried gave the option of booting into recovery mode which would have saved me so much time. Only the stock one did. The factory wipe was the key. So I'm definitely saving that file for safe keeping.
Thank you all for your suggestions and assistance. It's much appreciated.
This entire thread could have been avoided. By wiping completely. What is a complete wipe? Well, its the /system , /cache, /data, and /dalvik partition. Each of which are easily wiped in cwm in under 30 seconds. Flashing the kernel cleaning script doesn't hurt. Keep in mind these are your phones people it wouldn't hurt to do some research.

Resetting the SGS2 to factory settings for a sale

Can anyone link to a guide about restoring my SGS2 to factory settings? I've moved to a Galaxy Nexus and will sell my SGS2 with Envirofone, of the mobile recycling companies.
Much appreciated!
Questions belong in the Q&A section!
Also, the information on how to restore your phone to factory defaults is covered by the user manual and does not require xda-developers.
if you are on a stock rom, unrooted, just go through the settings menu and somewhere in location and security (i believe) you should find what you are looking for. make sure to also format the internal sd card.
For Android ICS
Settings> Backup and Reset > Factory Data reset
Settings> Storage> Erase USB storage
Settings> Storage> Erase SD card
Assuming you have CWM/Recovery installed, format cache, data, system, & internal sd card in Recovery, flash stock rom in Odin then reset flash counter. Done.
If you don't have CWM/Recovery & not rooted, do as Chef Tony said (definitely not an XDA thing if you're not the sort of person who tinkers with the phone/doesn't root or run non-stock firmware).

Sorry I was not clear. I have one of the nightly CM 4.0.4 builds so it will be the former option. Can I reset the flash counter in Odin, and will the Odin flash also remove CWM and reinstall the stock kernel?
Thanks
Can you reset the flash counter in/with Odin ? Um, no
To reset the flash counter, you need Triangle Away if you're running ICS bootloaders, or a jig if you're running the old bootloader. Now that I think of it, if you're running ICS bootloaders, reset the flash counter with Triangle Away first, before you format everything in CWM & before you flash a stock rom as it requires root. Flashing the stock rom in Odin won't affect the flash counter.
Doing all those formats in CWM before you flash the stock rom will remove root (and everything else). When you flash a stock rom in Odin it will include a stock kernel.

Thanks. Didn't know about Triangle Away, great app. Wiped everything in CWM, and then tried to restore two separate 4.0.3 images found here. Both times Odin finished fine, but after reboot the phone doesn't progress past the animated "S". Any ideas?

Okay, So.. As the title says, i have googled for DAYS, Tried every damn thing i could get my hands on..
Now.
So far, im able to get into download mode, and also into recovery mode, I've tried doing a factory reset, and then flashing a stock rom, and i've tried every concevable method of fixing this damned phone, Its driving me crazy, I flash a new rom with odin, phone reboots, (adds to count) and is STILL stuck at that ****ty flashing samsung logo..
I'd really appreciate ANY help i can get, And i AM a noob at this, So i dont FULLY understand EVERY detail of this, But i've read around enough to know a few things.
My SGS3 has been out of commision for longer than i've actually used it.. So.. Yeah, Getting quite desperate!
Please let me know if there are any particular details yyou need!
Hi,
Your problem is EFS.IMG
Please clear it. Use Odin3 for that.
Boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset, after you've flashed your ROM.
I had your problem some weeks ago,I finally managed to get arround this after I deleted the dalvik cache and flashed stock rom trough odin, and worked like a charm :good:
try this first before thinking of efs errors!

Thank so damn much for the help so far guys, i really appreciate it!
Cam't really help you with the EFS, but:
-bootloops are often fixed by installing rom then wiping data+cache from recovery as others said
-the dalvik cache can be wiped in the recovery, you can find "wipe dalvik cache" under the advanced submenu

Im in recovery mode right now (Vol UP+ Home + Power)? And i dont see an 'Advanced' menu option;
Options i DO have: reboot system now; apply update from ADB; apply update from external storage; wipe data/factory reset; wipe cache parition;
apply update from cache..
Any ideas?
These options are only available in a custom recovery.
Just try wipe --> flash stock room --> wipe

i just want to clarify... when you say 'flash STOCK rom' Do you mean i need to get a rom for a SGS3 VAU (Vodafone Asutralia) and flash that (go to odin, put it in PDA, etc)
and if THAT is the case.. Where would i get said rom, Because i've downloaded it from sammy firmware 4 times, each time it finishes the download without a hitch, when i go to extract the zip to get the needed files, it says its corrupted or some such BS..
Go to Sam mobile and download the firmware mate.
You will end up with a tar md5 file you flash using PDA section of Odin.
Good luck!

Kies is by far the easiest and safest way to factory reset. I have had to use it about 3 times in the past 6 months because I have flashed something I shouldn't have. Plus Kies now has a lite mode that is quicker at flashing your phone back to stock firmware.

[Q] no boot after Samsung update

Hey guys its been since my first epic 1 that I been here..what I have is an unrooted s3 I updated it and it worked fine but the next day it wont boot past the big s....I was wondering if anyway to undo the update? I dont want to wipe and flash because all my pics and music and some important files that mever made it to my sd card..any help or idea?
Boot to recovery and clear cache and dalvic, probably won't help though.
Next step is always to factory reset, you might get around this by installing custom recovery (Philz recovery is recommended), use that to format system, data etc. before installing your previous stock rom via .zip. That way your internal sd files will still be there and the phone will boot.
Follow guides in general, stickies.
Ok but it wont let me in recovery mode.I can get into the odin but thats it.can I dl cwm to it from the comp in odin mode? Or do I have to root it from there and see what it does?
from the odin mode flash stock rom as per your region. Also please note you will loose your data.

S2 suddenly dead

Hi, my S2 is running the spanish 4.1.2 that was flashed with ODIN a long time ago. Today it just died, when I try to switch it on it just stuck on the samsung logo (after the cool sound and animation).
I've tried to do wipe cache partition, no effect.
It's not dead. Unplug battery then put it back, then enter odin mode or recovery mode, reset rom. You could do odin on pc or recovery on Phone

@nupity maybe you can flash an flashable kernel/recovery through odin so you could also push another rom to your phone, flash it and easily backup your data. You can try siyah flashable kernel for odin or maybe from philz
Siyah, philz or dorimanx 8.43 kernel

I thought about it, should I flash through odin the rom that it's running right now? It should save the data and make it run right?
And then I will backup and move to a new rom.
@nupity you can try it BUT i am not sure or it formats data/factory reset also thats why i suggested to flash an recovery to flash another 4.1.2 stock based rom. You can google it about odin to be sure. I can't google it now since my tab's browser is bugged :/ and i don remember anymore from when i had the s2 or it wipes data also. I wish you luck with this

ahh okay nupity Maybe there is something with your existing apps what you had first. Try to go to Philz recovery and wipe cache/dalvik cache. If that doesn't work and it's still stuck then you maybe need to try to flash another 4.1.2 stock based romand see if it goes then so Download the rom, Format system, Cache and Dalvik cache.

@nupity maybe. If you have cwm then you can perform an advanced backup only fromthe data partition and then you could extract everything it with some nandroid backup manager.

@nupity its in the android/data folder but if you have recovery like i said just do advanced backup of data partition and use nandroid backup manager or something like that to get the data. Or you can just take the folder I guess :/ i am not sure anymore about the folder since i am 2 months without an android phone
