Hey guys,
so i was just playing around on my Ultra and decided to install Nova launcher. Normally i always do this but i have been very happy with Sonys launcher that i have not found a reason to change.
I wanted to play around with skinning some icons and you know, making my device look pretty
Anyway, having been using Nova launcher for the last 3 days now my battery life has improved a lot!!
I am getting at least 1 hour extra battery life compared to the Sony launcher and i have not changed any of my usage. If anything, i have more widgets etc running now than i did before.
Today i got 7 hours screen on time, and this was with screen brightness on at least 50% and around 25 hours standby time total.
So yeah, maybe a few of you can try using Nova for a few days and see if you notice the same thing. I am hugely surprised
Thanks and have a great day
ps. i am running .475 firmware non rooted.
I always run nova launcher prime on all my android devices I just updated to the 510 firmware and rooted I changed a few settings on the governer etc. And will post my battery life tomorrow night when I can have a good chance to run it tomorrow

Whoa whoa. Can you please specify what is the 7 hours screen time consist of? Maybe some gsam or betterbatterystats statistics?
I'm still running stock launcher on rooted 510. Typical usage is 4 hours screentime, which is 1 hour heavy gaming, 1 hour browsing, a bit of gps, and other light usage. The rest is standby with total time of 9-15 hours, depending on signal strength.
The screen is one damn power sucker.

How long did you use your phone before switching to Nova? Cause there is a battery improvement after about 10 cycle of charge.
Not that I say you wrong. It really plausible to have slightest battery life improvement with Nova as the launcher do not use Xperia framework. But Xperia framework look kinda lite so not so much battery consuming. Would be glad to see a screen of detailed battery usage.

Ok, I tested the Nova launcher today. I did feel that have much better battery life than the stock launcher. Give me about 1-2 hours screen on time more. Good.

Amazing what a different launcher can do right?
i got 7.5 hours screen on time yesterday and i was using the phone alot - i was on wifi almost the entire day - i personally dont believe that nova will get you much better battery life there are alot of other things involved in battery life besides the launcher - i always use nova as i just prefer it, i was not on wifi as much today and i have alot less screen on time - currently at 10 % battery remaining with 4 hours and 45 minutes screen on time - which is acceptable to me - it wont make it through the day but i can live with that - i will probably buy the battery case even though it is expensive as i use the phone alot and like to make it through a day without worrying - which was no problem at all with my note 2 with the 9300 mah zerolemon extended battery but cant go back to the note 2 after using this phone for a few days !!

Nova change nothing. Only thing that change is that the battery need time to reach its full capacity. I can see improvements on the battery since I bought it. Usually need to be serious on battery charge for about a week after buying your phone, and you'll see that the battery life improved. This is not about Android battery calibration but about the battery itself.

No offense, but i have owned my Z Ultra for 5 weeks now.
Nova launcher improved the battery. That is a fact. This is not my first phone, i know how batteries etc work but thanks
Nova has significant improvememt especially in launcher screen on mode. For internet browsing mode, it's better too.
But if you are a heavy gamer, then you won't feel much difference on it.
Nova will reflash the widget correctly. But the stock launcher has problems to reflash the widgets when rotating the screen. You can tell easily that the stock launcher is not fine tuned and that may be the reason for the worse battery performace.

Yes.
The nova launcher cant make your battery last longer, I dont see how anyway its just a launcher. Ill say it is a cool launcher but your better off trying to get a battery saving app to get more battery life and if that doesnt work you need a new battery. All smartphones use lithium ion batteries which naturally degrade and charge less from the day there first used.
Just like other bad programing app, a launcher will affect the battery life for sure. How it manage widgets and how it reflash the screen all will reduce or improve your battery life. If you ever used Go launcher before, you will understand what I meant.

Anyone noticed any battery drain with the ADW Launcher? I had it for like 2 days and my battery seemed to drain faster then usual so I removed it
What else have you got installed? It's the only launcher I use and have never had battery issues with it.
I use adw and its great. Because of adw my batt lasts 4days without charge. Remove all the stuff on Ur original home. This prevents the phone from needing to remember stuff on its own home screen. I think.

I use ADW and Juice Defender (just to toggle my APN/Wi-Fi when I turn the screen off), and with light-moderate usage (send like 100 texts, about an hour of browsing) I can easily get 2 days out of it.
I had pretty decent battery life with ADW...although Im now running Live Home as I find it much nicer.
But something weird I noticed I guess I could mention...I do like the default launcher but when I use it as home I have notice SIGNIFICANT battery drainage and I mean fast! When I go to check battery use my 'cell standby" is like 85% give or take a couple even when the phone has been just sitting there for a few hours. Its like it never goes to sleep...however when I use Live Home or even ADW for that matter my "cell standby" is usually around 30% or less.
Anyone else get the same thing?
I actually just checked my cell standby and its only at 14%....where as with the default home its 80% or more.
@gupta
I don't really call people much. Mainly text fb, Twitter, browsing, and fiddling. Maybe that's why I can get my phone running for 4 days? Mind u I do browse a lot

Then I think that will be your biggest issue, screen and wifi/data being used for prolonged periods of time is going to drain the battery, but some apps have been known to be battery killers too, but it's trial and error pinpointing them.

Yeah, I'm with XperiaX10iUser on this. More than likely it's your data usage. I've been using ADW for a few months and haven't noticed any impact on my battery because of it.
This past weekend I was at the cottage and thus had no signal. So I threw the phone in Airplane mode, and my battery was dropping at like 1% every few hours of non-use. I'd think if ADW was the culprit the battery would've been draining quicker than that, since it was running the whole time.
ADW's been great for me.
I've routinely posted that I can go three days of light use with wifi/3G/BT on.
I also experienced extreme battery drain with ADW. I installed it about 2 months ago and it killed my battery in a couple hours, tried reinstalling it and changed a few settings around, same thing. Needless to say I uninstalled it and went back to Helix and have been using that ever since. Maybe I'm one of the only other few out there to experience it, but ADW did drain my battery very very quickly, so you're not the only one!

What everyone thinks or notices is not important.
Use a battery profiler and you will see where is the problem.
In my case: face recognition, learning client and drm something.
I froze all of them and now top battery is Touiteur because is doing updates every 5min,
Anyone else get terrible battery life with go launcher? I absolutely love the launcher but its almost not worth it for the extra battery drain im getting. Id like to see what everyone elses experiences are with this launcher
i dont use it anymore but when I did have it, my battery did not drain any faster (at least not that I noticed).
I just went to go launcher ex and it seems to be draining a bit faster but too early to be entirely sure
I wouldn't say terrible, but the battery drain rate did increase. When installed, I saw 2-3% drain during idle. I switched back to LauncherPro and it has gone back to <1%.
I'm in a bad service are at the moment but I can for sure say it's absolutely guzzling it right now with internet significant use. I think I'm going to just go back to touchwiz or try adw or some other one. 5 rows for apps and customizable themes isn't worth the drain.
yes I have notice a atleast 3% drain on idle. I absolutely love that launcher but cant do that. In 3 hours I was down to 88% with little use...

I decided to give the standard Sense UI a go (even though the minor hickups and cube effect bug me) but I am astounded at how much more battery life I am getting.
I have used Nova Prime since I bought my DNA and got between 6 and 7 hours at the most.
Standard Sense (with root) and I am at 76% after 4 hours and 37 minutes.
Anyone else getting similar results?
I have been on Sense since I got this thing and have been incredibly impressed with the battery life. Hopefully this doesn't change if AOSP comes out.
I have also noticed the same thing. Also when I was using apex launcher it seemed like swiping between screens took just a little longer. I think that sense is just snappier.

Have had the phone for two days now and have been impressed with the battery life. Based on all the negativity I was expecting a poor experience. I have been using it fairly heavily (initial set up, playing around with it, downloading all my apps, etc.), although not too much 3G/4G use.
battery life has been exceptional for myself. I'm comparing it to the galaxy nexus.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
I noticed the impressive battery life also, but I've been running ADW due to the familiarity of it and the customization. I'll have to give sense a shot for a few days and see if it gets even better! I noticed too, that non-sense launchers seem to run a lot slower. My Gnex is actually more responsive running ADW than my DNA. Only thing I can figure is that the sense we have was designed for the 1080 screen, and perhaps optimized to use the quad core proc better. Hopefully the other launchers will adapt to this in a timely manner.

How to literally double your battery:
1) Add Facebook mobile site shortcut to home screen.
2) Disable built in fb app
On the Nexus/SIII I was one of the people who blindly said "FB just drains battery" but I decided to give it a shot. I shut all notifications and refresh and location off for the app from the getgo. I'm a student so I have similar usage patterns every day. With FB app installed I came out of school with somewhere around 45% left two days in a row. Today, with slightly less usage in the morning, only thing changed is no FB app and I had 83% left. Mind boggling difference. :/

I am rooted and am using Nova Prime. It has worked really well for me, and I find the battery life has been decent, especially after the first couple of days. I will say though that in the battery settings, under app usage, it shows Nova Launcher as the second highest app at 9%. Not sure if that is normal or not, but it does seem higher than I remember with my other phone.
I'm using Nova launcher and it's usually at like 2% on my battery usage list. My highest is "Kernel" with like 38%. I have no idea why Kernel is so high.
I also use Nova and will not go to sense because I like 6 rows of icons on the home screen. This phone is so long I hate wasting it. I'm getting 15 hours with 2-3 hours screen time with 15-20% battery
left the last 3 days. I can't ask for more. The battery is more than ample for me, and has exceeded my expectations.

Wait, so you're saying that even though you always had all notifications and refresh off, the FB app still used up that much battery? I used to be one of those people too, and I always turn off everything from FB. My battery is doing quite well, but hey, constant improvement is always good right?
I've tried both nova and apex launchers on a previous phone and i found that nova is a battery hog. I was missing some of my options that i had set up on apex so i had to install it again, I'm enjoying plenty of battery life but i also only average 1-2 hours on screen on time.
also you can change animation speeds both in the dev option in ICS and in apex launcher settings

I'm getting these exact same results.
So after the jelly bean update, my battery life dropped abysmally. I attributed it at first to Google now's constant use of GPS, but even after turning off GPS radios it didnt improve much. So I got myself the SEIDIO Innocell Plus extended battery case to see if it would help (a lot of reviews said it did) but it didnt help me to the extent that the reviews claimed. Some youtube reviewer dude claimed the battery charged his phone like 80%! My battery is only charging my phone about 30%. I have slowly began to turn things off: First changed launchers to GO EX, then turned off all radios except mobile network, then turned offf live wallpapers, then go my self another app called cleaner something or other, and Im hoping that will help.
Now questions:
I have TSF shell, Sense, GO EX, and Launcher Pro installed, along with a home switcher. Is having this many launchers installed taking a toll on my battery?
What else might help me improve my battery life? Will rooting and changing ROMS help?
Does one launcher offer more battery life vs the other? recommendations?
Does anybody has any experience with the case I bought? The manual claims, for "best results" turn on the battery when the phone battery is at 50%. Any reason why this actually matters?
Any other advise you have would be greatly appreciated. Its ridiculous that I am still struggling with battery life even after getting an extended battery case.

Could be just a bad battery. Did you break in the case properly, what's your charging habits (do you let it die before connecting?) How do you use your phone?
There's lots or variables that goes into this.

Im not sure breaking in the case properly means, but what I did is charge it fully, then let it die, repeat. My phone, when I used to get battery life, i would let it get to about 25 % and then recharge. Nowadays it always dies and then I recharge.
I started using one power guard and I believe it really works. Also I found that turning off Gps while not using apps that need it increases battery life by a lot.

Quick question from me also: when I go to Power in settings and click Usage, Camera takes up 23% of power usage it says...I used it once to take a single picture (about 10s) and closed it right afterwards (and I don't have geotagging enabled). Is Camera really sucking a quarter of my battery, or is something else acting under the name Camera? (stock 3.15, no root)

Why do you use so many launchers? The launcher that uses less memory with save you more battery
Rooting and changing ROMs should really increase battery because people tweak and debloat them like crazy. Based on all the launchers you have I recommend you find a senseless rom if you root
No idea about the case.

I'm new to the n10. I've seen some people complain of battery loss quickly. I'm using baked black bean. And Trinity kernel. Is this not common or do I have a misconception? Thanks

I don't think so. Could you let us have a look at your app drawer/syncing settings page so we can see what's running?
I feel like that is pretty average battery cunsumption for people. There are some who simply cant optimize in any way and they get **** battery life, something like 5-6 hours total screen on time before the tablet dies. Then there are some of us (like me) who get anywhere between 11-15 hours of screen on time in a single charge with our usage style.

It should get better with time. Mine is 6 months old, the battery has had the chance to reach its peak performance

11-15 HOURS? I haven't heard of that before anywhere on these forums. Can you post a screenshot?
I've been happy with my 6 hours of screen on time at mid-brightness on the stock ROM. I'd be willing to do quite a bit to get THAT level of battery.

Brightness level has the most to do with it, then it also depends if you leave wifi on all the time, and how intensive your apps are. You will never get 11 hours + with brightness at mid
And this one is from another user who posted it a few days ago:

Not even into "low battery" state yet too. He could ahve easily gotten 13+ hours of screen on time in that charge had he kept going.
