How to "control"/block OTA updates - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

Hi Guys,
It seems there is a 20h update coming, and I was wondering if there is a way of blocking or "preventing" an OTA update with our P769 ?
My P769 (20f) is rooted (using LGPWN method) and it seems that this can make the OTA fail (I have Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper just in case) and so it means that you'll have to go through the whole process of flashing if it fails... which is not too bad, but still...
So, is there basically a way of saying "yes" or "no" to an OTA ?
Thanks for you help :good:

Any idea ?

If you dig deep in the old threads you might find something. However, if I'm not mistaken none of them worked.

Thanks for the reply :good:.
I guess I'll have to deal with the OTA, and see what will happen.

the way it was done was using titanium backup to freeze two items having to do with ota. it worked. i did it and it was glorious. i will update this in a second when i find it

Awesome, thanks :good:

Wish I'd found this thread ages ago, I just used System Tuner to disable the update alerts in Google Services Framework. Wouldn't recommend it, caused a bunch of crashes.

Can't be switched off in the settings (about phone/check for updates)? Or set this to manual? I'm on CM now and I don't remember anymore for stock rom

Has anyone had success with this? I froze the first app - com.lge.lgfota.permission. As for the second app - com.lge.omadmclient, I don't have it on my phone.

Well, I may have found a work around...
My phone and my wife's phone are both rooted with bloat removed. On the first phone, I went ahead and told it to install the update and reboot knowing it would fail. After I got the dead droid, I pressed and held power until it shut off and then powered it back on. I have not seen the update prompt since. That was about a week ago. I went ahead and did the same thing to the other phone and have the same results (no update prompt). YMMV

Scratch that. The wife's phone started asking to update again. The steps above only give about a week's reprieve.

Help with stopping OTA Update P769 to V20H

My phone is running v20f, I have rooted and done various tweaks, so I do not plan on updating to v20h. My phone is notifying me of the update every 10-40 minutes. I tried the method of freezing the com.lge.lgfota.permission and I successfully did that, but could not find com.lge.omadmclient to freeze as instructed in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37433783&postcount=10
Is there any way to stop the notifications? It literally runs every 10-40 minutes and has for 2 straight days.

You could try this but I can't guarantee anything.
A couple days ago I downloaded the update from v20f to v20h. Rebooted but for some reason it failed to restart; got the Droid with exclamation mark in the stomach (possibly due to Voodoo rootkeeper??). I removed the battery for a few minutes and then booted. The update was not installed and the phone has been running v20f ever since with no notifications. It won't even let me update manually. It may be that when you download the update the server records your phone's info and won't let you download it again. ?? In short, take the update and before it reboots remove the battery for a while. Again, no guarantees.

I wouldn't disable it, but what about freezing it? That should stop the information dataPush.

Will that cause adverse effects on future updates? Isn't that what updates the play store and what not?

Our phones don't brick
TO THE OP TRY THIS
0. Root, if you haven't already.
1. Download AutoRun Manager
2. In ARM, choose "Advanced"
3. Touch the wrench icon, and check
- Show System Entries
- Enable System Application Disable
4. Back on the application list, tap the refresh (circle arrow) icon if you don't see system apps. They should have a red background.
5. Find the app Google System Framework (aka: GSF) and tap it.
6. Uncheck the "com.google.<something>.gsf.update.SystemUpdat e" receivers. I can't read my own handwriting at the moment, but they both end in SystemUpdate.

Well what I did was freeze com.lge.lgfota.permission in Titanium Backup and then I used Root Explorer to find LGFota.apk in \system\app and changed it from LGFOTA.apk to LGFOTA.bak. Then I let the update run which will give you the dead android and it shoul solve your problem. Well now that I'm thinking about it the apk is the one that reboots your phone until recovery so if you change it then you will have to just power off your phone and you should be fine.

[HOW TO] Disable OTA Update (G-Note 3) Notifications!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The user lordazoroth originally posted this method here in the T-Mobile SGSIII forum. However, I have confirmed that it works with the Note 3 (at least with the Verizon variant) with one small difference. Feel free to give us both a "THANKS" if this helped you out.
You can disable the OTA Update notification by following the steps below. Just be aware that there is a small change in STEP #3.
Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear. (My phone rebooted and tried to install the update - this is the point where my Note 3 gave the update failed notification. I just rebooted the phone and went to STEP #2.)
Step 2. Disable otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot
(NOTE: The difference in STEP #3 for the Galaxy Note 3 is that the [FotaClient.apk] is named [LocalFotaClient.apk] instead of just [FotaClient.apk]. All of the other steps are the same.
Continue running JB 4.3 and enjoy your Note 3 without that nagging update notification!
But the kitkat update is awesome... so you might want to reconsider doing this

Wouldn't just freezing the "SDM" app do the trick? And possibly "FWUpgrade", although i heard that just SDM works

I personally use ROM Toolbox to do it
I got the annoying OTA update today... I DON'T WANT TO UPDATE!!! Why can't they give us an option instead of forcing it down our throats?
Is there any way to disable the update WITHOUT ROOTING? I read everywhere you need ROOT ACCESS to delete the SDM.apk FILE and such. I can't delete it without root.
How can I get rid of the annoying update WITHOUT ROOTING or what is the easiest way to gain root without wiping out everything and starting over?
As of this morning...Verizon seems to be trying to "ram the update" onto your note 3
I was rooted and safestrapped on MJE and when I unplugged my phone from the charger this morning...I had a notice that the update failed to install.
I had previously downloaded, but removed the download.

No way of knowing how far it got. If it was able to get the bootloader nailed in...yes. Screwed. Welcome to kk. If not, whatever you do will wipe at this point.
Safest bet to try and see if you can retain jb is with odin...if it lets you. If it does, great. If it doesn't, you still need odin because you just interrupted a firmware update and probably just soft bricked your phone. So you'll need odin to put kk on your phone.
--
If niether of these things look good, they aren't. So try this first. Try booting to recovery. If you can, it's possible you just saved yourself from learning to use odin. Do a factory reset and reboot. See if it boots to jb. If it does, root asap. If not (it just hangs forever or loops), you're bricked. Try to odin jb. If it keeps failing, you're stuck with kk and you need to odin kk.
If you can't get to recovery and just hangs or loops, odin jb or kk. Whichever it lets you.
If it doesn't let you boot to recovery because it continues to upgrade, at this point let it. This is the ONLY possible scenario that you will keep anything.
Mind you, everything I just covered will never touch any files on external sd memory.
This is a lot to process. So take your time. Good luck!

GRRR it installed Kitkat successfully. I'm SO MAD.. I should have set the annoying OTA notification for a different time so that it wouldn't constantly pop up every second... I would have been home free rooted on Jellybean if it weren't for the STUPID UPDATE.
So can I still DOWNGRADE to Jellybean and be rooted? or did Verizon LOCK or restrict stuff with the update? Can I go back to Jellybean keeping all my files?

I read that too... I can't believe one simple tap mistake ruined my whole first time rooting adventure... Using KINGO was so easy and right when I WAS ABOUT TO DELETE THE STUPID SDM file in the system folder, the update popup came up and accidentally hit the UPDATE And it just rebooted instantly!! I hate how they don't even allow you to cancel or anything... like totally forcing it in your face!!
I still have SuperSU but no longer functions it says "There isn o SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root - consult the relevant forums for your device!"
So there's no way to have root access now?? I can't flash back to Jellybean??? Verizon/Samsung really screwed us here. There must be a way to have root access in Jellybean... I don't care for custom roms... I just want root access!!

Thanks for the thumbnail. I did find it in TB and froze it but I'm still getting the update notification in my notification pull down.
Did you restart the phone after
that may work
Don't know if this will work or not, but on the Galaxy S3 the way to stop getting nagged about an OTA was to edit build.prop and replace all references to the old ROM with the new one. So you could try making a backup of build.prop, then edit all references to ZV4 and change them to ZV6. Save the file, make sure permissions are set to rw-, r--, r-- (0644), and reboot.
I would strongly suggest making a nandroid backup first.
Here's how I have been doing it:
1. Download Autorun Manager
2. In settings under advanced enable view services
3. Go to Google Services Framework and disable update...see below.
At your own risk if you decide to try it, of course.

This is the recommended way. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57182591
If the update has already downloaded. Disabling the OTA still wont get rid the the notification. Easy way to get rid of it is long press it and go to app info. This will take you to Google Play Services. Simply uncheck show notifications and the system update in the pull down notifications will go away.
Just a temporary fix to get it out of the way. I reccommend just downloading a ZV6 rooted rom.

Lucky you. Good find. Glad you got it sorted. Now you can relax.
I have a question that I wanted to ask before I go any further. I bought a G3 last week, rooted it and installed twrp recovery, and have done multiple backups.. Had a hardware defect so I had to exchange my phone for another new one. I received a system update just now so I was going to accept the OTA update since its not rooted, completely stock. My questions are will I be able to root and instally twrp after this update and once I install all my apps, and if rooting and installing twrp is successful, can I restore my backup that I did on my other phone, even though its a different phone? Its from the same carrier and same model phone. Thanks for your feedback.

Don't take OTA. Root it and TWRP it. Then flash STOCK ROM ZV6 Deodexed or Odexed, then you'll be up to date and keep root with TWRP.

Factory ROM

Okay here is what happened. I have my device rooted. It has been working great. I have been changing my boot animations and one that I changed to has me stuck in boot. I did a back up of the factory boot animations but I didn't have them moved to my SD card. I have been trying to restore the phone to factory and it is not working. Does anyone have a backup of the factory ROM so I can get back up and running. I know I am asking for a lot here but it would grateful for it or if anyone know how I can restore it.

I pulled my SIM did another Wipe/Factory. Black boot screen came up and it just now went into back to working. First thing I did was change my boot animation back and it is working again. So maybe the steps I just did could be the solution.
Didn't work for me. I just disabled my boot animation because I didn't like it... I tried what you said. You think you could post a stock rom I could flash? Or make a cwm backup? I'm not even sure if I can adb push CWM back on here right now, I haven't tried yet...
I have a CWM backup of mine but it is not factory. I removed some of the ATT crap. I am looking to find a place to upload it. I will post a link after I get that set up.
please and thank you
We could use stock recovery for sure while we are exploring our phones I will teamviewer and root your phone for you to make a backup to be uploaded I did backup and then formatted the drive I had it on like a dummy removed a ton of bloat all was fine messed with a play store patched mistake factory restored stayed rooted apps still gone busybox still installed phone working lost home button no longer works just has glow when touched pull down status bar not working so I may just need a titanium backup of some factory apps if some one can do a tb. And upload a backup of stock apps this might help others any help would be appreciated I think I'm gonna try and compile a custom recovery for us there is info on here if anyone can help with that email me [email protected] can't find place to upload the recovery files or app backups zip and mail them too me and I will upload them and create post of all factory files
Ok so upon more research it the setup wizards I removed two of them if some on could back those up with titanium and shoot them to me I would really appreciate it
I am uploading my backup to 4shared and when it is done I will post a link for it. MOST of the ATT crap is gone so it is not a true factory. Also my backup is rooted. I hope it will help everyone. It is going to take some time to get it uploaded. It is 1.8 gig and it is a CWM backup.
I really think I just need the two wizards setup wizard and I can't recall the others name but if all else I am gonna use that link

Does anyone have a factory rom to download, maybe?
Any news on a factory restored stock backup yet? See posts about people saying they are going to and never doing so...
My backup that I have was not working for others. That is why mine has not been posted.
I think it works?
After a lot of time and effort I think I have a working backup for the padfone x mini. I have it rooted with busybox and superuser installed. Bootloader still locked but everything seems to work. Anyone needs a copy I'll post a link.

Follow the threads here and get the Padfone S ROM. I know it's not the same (only difference should be the lack of USA LTE)..... it works with the dock and everything else I've thrown at it.... still have the sleep bug for me, but I found a workaround.....
WakeLock..... The only app to fix the problem with my phone. If I set it to wait lock 7 (FULL_WAKE_LOCK), then it stays up and running.... sure, the screen needs to be on, but there are BlackScreen apps to make it look like it's off.

final got the AT&T Asus Padfone X mini original CWM backup
It is a very big file, take awhile for download.
I test it and work with rooted phone back to factory version that allow OTA update.
You will lost every data and setting in your phone.
Too young to post link, yet but
PM me your email, I will send a link to your email address.
Good luck.
Root Utility, Latest ATT OEM Backup, etc
Okay... I've got this all figured out and will compile all of this $hit in one package with instructions as soon as I can get a little breathing room...
I have my own server space...
Upload it all in one zip file I suppose...
Give me a few days

February update is out...

Installing now.
Did anyone notice that once it starts installing if you start doing something else it pauses? Said, will resume when idle. That was never the case before. The whole graphic is way different too.
Ugh, now I have to go back to stock kernel and uninstall Magisk again. Wish OTA would recognize me. I went all of January only being rooted with Magisk and no OTA notice.

Just use the flash-all (and remove the -w to retain your data), otherwise you will need to sideload the OTA. Don't try returning to "stock."

Just this piece of non-info.
Thanks, for that info. Then I just took the Magisk update and chose the "Direct Install" method.
Now I'm on "No Command" until I get home and try to figure out wtf I just did.

I used the fastboot flash all and everything is fine.
If you see "no command" you need to restore your stock kernel. I got that after Magisk uninstall too.

Sorry, the quoted post email went to my spam. As mentioned, just restore the stock kernel to get out of the no command. Hope you already figured that out though.
Anyone noticed there is lag in animations while opening or closing apps after the update?
It's not Everytime but happens more often.

I just flashed all for the Feb update and re rooted and all that, if only I could take OTAs using Magisk. Well...if only it would recognize my phone as needing an OTA. I know how to do the OTA update with Magisk, just never get it

I think this month was unique in that Magisk had been updated literally the morning of the update. I've found that using the flash-all (minus -w) is not only easier but more reliable. After a few times, it becomes second nature. It also gives you a chance to extract the boot.img file from the file you already downloaded. You don't know how many times you need to flash that to both slots to clean up something else. As for notification, the Pixel update is always the 1st Monday of the month with the exception of holiday weeks or full OS version updates happening at the same time. Not at all like waiting for an OTA from another manufacturer.
Has anybody else trouble with Play Store downloads after the update ? every app i attempt to update is at "Download pending..." but it never starts.
I already cleared the cache and data from both Play Store and Play Services but it didn't help. No problems before the Feb. update.
No problems with Google Play store

I thought I'd gotten the update last night left it installing and came back to it later. It didn't look any different and when I checked was still on the January update.
Tried for hours to re-get the update and nothing, and then I noticed Google Now wasn't totally empty and I got the dreaded no cards error. Waited until the next day as all my devices had the same problem.
After waiting a few more hours with still no update, I bit the bullet and side loaded the OTA. Upgraded perfectly and Google Now started working again.
Very weird.

My 1st time in just was spinning on checking for updates. I force stopped, cleared cache and data and relaunched. All was fine after that.
Got it to work occasionally after clearing the cache multiple times, but that seems unreliable because i have to redo it after every 1-2 downloads. Very strange and annoying.

Uninstall play store update and let it update itself again.
