I just purchased a used AT&T I777 and activated it with Straight Talk. Everything works great except for the fact that it fails to download picture messages. It was originally on 4.0.4. I just upgraded it to 4.1.2 and it still fails to download pictures. I can send them without any problem. I'm using the APN settings that Straight Talk gave me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'm not out $300.
I was just told by the person I bought the phone from that straight talk has issues with AT&T phone. Would it work to root the phone and put a different version of android on it?
One more thing I need to know. I have the option of sending this phone back (minus a 20% restocking fee). If I decide to root the phone and put a custom rom on it, can I restore it back to original so that I can send it back without issues?
Steve
I tried putting my APN settings up but the site wont let me. Guess I'm too new.
Are your Straight Talk APN settings correct?
Proxy=proxy.mvno.tracfone.com

MMSC=http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS=66.209.11.33
MMS port=80
MCC=310
MNC=410
APN type=mms,supl
Don't know if the APN type data is important or not. These are the settings that work on my I777.

Those aren't even close to the APN settings that I have. I tried yours but they wouldnt work.

Try these apn settings. They worked for one of my friends s3. (The supl and hipri help speed up the internet a bit)
Just rechecked my APN type entry.
APN type=default,supl,mms,web
Not sure what happened
I was sitting here going thru other sites looking for solutions when all my pic messages started coming in. I didnt change anything but its working now. Thanks for the suggestions

Hello everyone, this is a troubleshooting request.
The problem: My Galaxy S2 data connection drops frequently after my first root
My Galaxy S2 was the first phone I rooted, and needless to say… I’ve learned a lot. After about 2 months of using a rooted kernel and a ROM from XDA developers, I’ve had a consistent problem I can’t solve on my own. I’ve gone through about 5-6 different ROM’s and probably 15-20 modems and the problem is always the same: my data connection dies frequently because I cannot use the proper APN settings. The connection indicator will simply disappear and in Settings > About Phone > Status, the service state will show “out of service”. It lasts about 30 seconds before I assume the connection resets and it comes back.
Why I think it happens: When I was researching prior to rooting, nothing anywhere ever mentioned APN’s. I assume the settings are pretty much automatic for most carriers? I don't think that’s the case for my carrier: DOCOMO PACIFIC. After rooting, I was able to make phone calls and text but my data didn’t work at all for days. I copied APN settings from 3 different friends with S2’s with no success. I even took it to a DOCOMO tech and had him check the APN settings and verified them as correct. Out of sheer frustration, I started leaving out random items in the APN settings and it began working (albeit poorly).
I am able to get a connection if I just put in “gcpos” as the APN and nothing else, but the connection drops frequently. These are the settings that I use:
Name: Docomo Pacific
APN: gcpos
MCC: 310 (automatic)
MNC: 470 (automatic)
The settings that I’m SUPPOSED to be using are:
Name: Docomo Pacific
APN: gcpos
Proxy: 209.4.229.82
Port: 9201
MMSC: ht tp://mmsc.guamcell.csky.us:6672/ (Had to break up prefix due to posting restrictions)
MMS Proxy: 209.4.229.82
MMS Port: 9201
MCC: 310
MNC: 470
APN Type: internet + mms
The problem is as soon as I put those settings in, data will not work at all. I can make phone calls and text, but anything internet won’t work. So what gives? Does anyone know why it does this?
I botched my ROM backup, so I cannot revert to the previous ROM/modem and obviously no tech will probably touch it because my warranty is void. Even using stock ROMs and stock modem still gives me the same problems. It’s usable in its current state, but the problem irritates me to no end. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
Silly question but have you asked your phone service provider to send the settings? Unless smartphones are radically different to non-smartphones they should support receiving Service Settings via SMS Text Message from your provider.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I did call them up and all they did was read back the settings I already had. I found a website that lists their alternate APN settings too, but still no dice...
I'm absolutely certain I'm using the correct APN settings because I've gotten the same settings from about 5 different sources and put them in about 30 times. The problem seems to be that the correct settings simply will not work.
I've done some searching and didn't happen to run across anyone that was having a similar problem. Originally, I thought this might be a StraightTalk/Verizon issue, but I've confirmed that one of my family members with ST T-Mobile can text with Verizon folks just fine. So let me dive into the details...
I've had my StraightTalk T-Mobile sim card for about a week now. I activated it without any problems, set up the APN and everything seemed to be working just fine. I've been texting with a few family members and some co-workers without issues. My data and voice calls are all working fine as well.
I went to text a friend that has Verizon post paid service and he never got my text. So I sent a few more without success, then tried to text my own Verizon number (since my account is still active for the moment) and I never received my own text either. He sent me a text message that I received just fine though, but again he didn't get my response. Just to further test, I send an MMS message to myself and my friend on Verizon and that came through just fine, so it appears that all texting capabilities work with the following carriers (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, ST T-Mobile) with the exception of regular SMS to Verizon.
Here are my APN settings:
Name: StraightTalk T-Mobile
APN: wap.tracfone
Proxy: Not set
Port: 8080
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http:**mms.tracfone.com (replace ** with //, since I can't post links)
MMS Proxy: Not set
MMS Port: Not set

Authentication Type: Not set
APN Type: default,supl,mms
APN Protocol: IPv4

About the phone... I purchased an AT&T Note (sgh-i717) and unlocked it myself. The unlock was successful but I was only getting edge data since T-Mobile has re-farmed the towers in my area yet. So, I installed CWM and flashed the Blaze4G radios. I'm now getting consistent signal and H+ speed (4-8 mbps avg, 14 mbps peak). The only other thing I had to change was that my phone number wasn't showing up in the About Phone -> Status section, so I went into the dialer -> Settings -> Additional Settings -> My Phone Number and set it there in the format of xxx-xxx-xxxx. I also just flashed the T-Mobile VKL1 radio as well but no change in my sms issue.
I'm a bit lost at this point on why everything else would work except for sending sms to Verizon but yet I can receive them from Verizon just fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Texts aren't immediate when the network is busy. Sometimes the delay can be several hours.
None of my Verizon messages are ever delivered, some from 3-4 days ago. I called Straight Talk tech support and they are tracing some of my messages. One of the things they thing might be wrong is the message center number that is configured in my phone but they didn't want to change it until after they could do further research.
Update: Confirmed the smsc is correct, so that doesn't appear to be the issue.
Just a follow up in case anyone else ever had an issue similar... a T-Mobile technician called me today, they found out Verizon had blocked my cell phone number from their network. After the tech got the ban lifted, texting is working just fine.

That's interesting. And it sucks. You could have spent hours\days working on something you could never fix. Did they give any reason for your block? Glad you got it worked out.

You'll want to flash the T-Mobile ROM in the development section. Follow the instructions carefully.

Update: Straight Talk's website now tells you the apn setting you should be using, to do this visit the link at the bottom of this post and follow the directions. The apn settings in this post should be the settings all new users are assigned, checking the link would tell you for sure though.
Just a heads up, if you're using Straight Talk's BYOP sim card and your data quit working, you may have been transitioned to new apn settings. I read about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2310215 in the Nexus 4 forums.
It seems users there lost all mobile data connectivity after their service renewed. The new apn settings seemed to have restored their data connectivity. I suggest making a second apn setting on your phone with the new settings I've posted below. The reason why I suggest a second apn is so you can easily switch between apns if you lose data connectivity on the new apn, I see it as an easy troubleshooting step down the road.
Here is the new apn
Name: Straight Talk
APN: tfdata
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
Straight Talk now let's you type in your phone number on their website to look up which apn settings you should be using, it can be found here
http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/support/apn#.UwhwZHVdX8s
I hope somebody finds this useful and hopefully doesn't cause confusion.

I tried this too on my Google Nexus 4 because the results from my speedtests have been very poor [pic attached].
Unfortunately for me, the new APN settings are not working. In the mean time, I have placed a support ticket with Straight Talk to fix this issue.

You can not get LTE without the hardware. The SGH-I777 and the SGH-S959G are not LTE capable.

Probably because you need the new LTE sim card from ST, which only recently came out; that is if your hardware supports it, as creepy stated.
And please be aware that this is the i777 forum.

From what I've gathered, there are two different At&t apn settings for straight talk's byop sim card, either att.mvno or tfdata. I use to be on att.mvno for my apn, but when I changed to their lte sim card, my apn settings became tfdata.
I'm not sure cdma phones have programmable apn settings.

I have had problems sending mms on the i777 on non-stock based roms such as cm. I had better luck getting mms to go if I disconnected from wifi and waiting for the phone to establish a data connection before sending the mms. I never had much luck with toggling airplane mode on and off to get an mms to go. If it didn't go the first time, I'd just forward the mms I was trying to send to the same person that I was trying to originally send it to, normally the forwarded one went. I decided to forward it to them because it took less time than making a new mms message all over again. hope that helps.
In the mms proxy field put
66.209.11.33 Instead or try 66.209.11.34

You may get faster speeds, but you're not getting true LTE, because our device simply doesn't have the necessary hardware.
But I'm glad you're getting better speed, I agree with trevor, please share your setup!

I am activating Straight Talk bringing my i777 S2 from ATT. They told me to use the same settings as you've listed above. How long did your activation take? I got them on the phone at 11am and it is now 8pm. I'm still waiting - Is that normal?

Well it depends, are you porting your number or are you getting a new number from them? When I activated my straight talk sim card, I got a new number and was up in running in minutes, if not instantly.
i just got my mom set up with a moto e. she previously used straight talk at&t on a samsung captivate glide. i switched her over to a micro sim & everything works great except for her mms/picture messages. before i left her house, her calls & regular texts worked. she was able to send me a picture message, but she never received the pictures i tried to send her. so, my question is: does anyone have the correct/working apn settings for straight talk at&t for the moto e 2015?
please & thank you.

thanks, but that was the first place i checked for her. she is still having the issue with mms...
thanks anyway though...
Did you try some other apps like whatsapp?
she's used whatsapp in the past, but mainly for travel, using it to text when she has wifi at a hotel or something. she used to get mms when she used her old phone on st/at&t. my dad has never been able to get them, but he uses a st/tmo sim... i'm just trying to get it to work so she doesn't have to use any type of work around for it. she is currently using the stock messaging app on the moto g... not sure if she should be using hangouts or not?
i don't live with her, so i have been trying to gather a bunch of info & when i see her, test it out.
thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the help. I'll probably see her tomorrow so I will try it then. I've used straight talk on & off for years on about 4 different phones & haven't had this issue, so I'm kinda at a loss. Thanks again for your info.
There was a blurb a while back, when I switched to my Nexus 4 yrs ago that Straight Talk was having issues with new SIM cards on existing plans. Basically the only work around was literally waiting until the next billing cycle date and it magically worked. This affected us that switched from full SIM to micro SIM cards, but besides physical card, everything was the same. I wonder if this is rearing its head again.
Hm, interesting. Could be, I mean, she did just switch Sims... I hope it's not the case, she usually does their 3month plan.
Like I said, this is totally new for me, I've used a galaxy nexus, nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy s 3, & a nexus 5 on straight talk & never had the issue. I just recently got a moto x 2014 & planned on switching back to straight talk today.
I really appreciate everyone's help.
I ditched straight talk for T-Mobile just because of this. Best decision I've made!
Straight talk also has an app on the playstore titled APN settings

This has finally been solved.
SurferNerd, you are right, it has to do with the billing cycle. I have no idea why, but the only thing that worked was when my mom had to reup her plan. Thanks again for all your help.
I just switched my verizon phone to straight talk. Im finding out one of the things thats saving me money is terrible customer support...
So I have an S5 SM-G900V running 4.4.2 unlocked.
So I switch to straight talk and everything is great. Same exact service as verizon for half the price. The next day I get a text that my data plan has been updated from 5 gb to 8 gb. They told me this would happen. Now when they switch my plan over they also reflashed my APN and broke my data/MMS. Get on the web google a little bit download a couple things and within an hour Ive got the APN properly working and data going just fine. Next day I try to send someone a picture via text and realize I cant receive or send MMS'. Get back on google tonight to configure the texting an APN settings and for the life of me I cant get it to work. Ive tried numerous old and new MMSC's proxies, ports, etc. I managed to get my downloading working but uploading refuses to play nice.
My APN reads as follows right now.
APN: TRACFONE.VZWENTP
MMSC: HTTP://MMS.VTEXT.COM/SERVLETS/MMS
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
APN TYPE: DEFAULT,DUN,STDHIPRI,SUPL
APN PROTOCOL: IPV4/IPV6
APN ROAMING PROTOCOL: IPV4/IPV6
BEARER: LTE
If I didnt listed the field is blank. So as a small note my wife has the same exact phone but with the next version of android and is having no issues. Her APN reads exactly the same except the MMSC is set to default, and the APN TYPE doesnt have STDHIPRI. I tried her settings not luck. Also the MMSC im currently on is not what worked for downloading so Im broken on up and download right now. I used an older tracfine address that got downloading working. This vtext address is what is listed as correct for a verizon phone everywhere on the web...
Also Id like to add I wanted to try some settings I found with different MCC and MNC numbers but if I change them it immediately deletes my APN profile...
I did also try go sms and some other recommended messaging apps and it made no difference.
Help please lol. Im getting super frustrated.
Well I just fixed it. Go figure I walk away from it for a couple hours, make a post, screw with it for 10 minutes and figure it out...
SO for anyone else on the internet with this issue here is the functioning current APN for a verizon phone on straight talk as of 8/2017
APN: TRACFONE.VZWENTP
MMSC: HTTP://MMS.VTEXT.COM/SERVLETS/MMS
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
APN TYPE: DEFAULT,MMS,SUPL
APN PROTOCOL: IPV4/IPV6
APN ROAMING PROTOCOL: IPV4/IPV6
BEARER: LTE
It was all in the stupid APN Type line. Apparently either my phones a screw ball OR perhaps newer android phones default better on certain settings that my rooted phone cant? Either way this stupid line changed worked to fix both my downloading and uploading...
