Boot loop sorta - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

This is my best description of what happened. Any thoughts?
I was running AJK 4.6 and SuperNexus 2. I think my (up until now normal) battery went dead and the phone turned off (I'd received low battery warning). I plugged it in but it is apparently no longer charging.
While on the charger it turned itself on (middle of the night) and started running in some kind of bootloop. I would see the Samsung logo then it would flash a couple times and then sometimes cycle back and sometimes turn off. I probably should have waited until I could get a new battery but instead I started messing with it. I started thinking something may have gone wrong in the ROM/kernel/stweaks when it went dead so I decided to Odin back to stock. I did that and the same thing keeps happening. Stock successfully installed but won't boot. I see the boot logo then it either cycles back or turns off. As long as it's plugged in it randomly turns on and tries to boot. Battery does get hot. With just the battery the hard keys might (or might not) flash but nothing else happens. In all this I've never got recovery to boot although obviously got in download mode ok.
I'm actually due for an upgrade so may simply go ahead and get my SG4 but I'd still like to get some files from internal sd. Is this just a bad battery causing this? Shouldn't it boot when plugged in though?
??????

No, the phone will not turn on with the battery pulled but plugged in, so if the battery is dead, then it will also not turn on with the battery when plugged in.

Does it make sense that a bad battery would cause the bootloop? I've ordered a battery so we'll see if that's the whole problem. It was just weird coming on in the middle of the night like that! LOL
Edit: still is randomly coming on and looping. Volt meter says 3.43
Edit2: got into recovery. Stock recovery factory reset would wipe my sd card - pictures and all - wouldn't it?
And, now I can't get the phone to turn off. If it's plugged in it cycles the loop continuously.

No, it doesn't really make sense to me. However, I have seen numerous people report exactly that behavior with the I777 over the past couple of years. So it seems likely that it could be the problem. Or it could be some kind of hardware failure. I think replacing the battery is the correct next troubleshooting step.

No. Factory reset only wipes the data partition. Your SD card is completely separate from the internal memory where bootloaders, kernel, system, data and other things reside.

"Delete all user data" sounds like it will delete the pictures in the camera's internal directory. If I've copied or moved files on to the external sd they're safe but won't all internal files - including pictures and documents - disappear?
Note: it's hard to sit on my hands and do nothing until my battery comes Wed so I'll prob end up wiping the phone which defeats the purpose of getting the phone to start so I can backup my stuff. Arghhhh!

Update in case anyone notices this thread - I did finally get the phone to boot after it sat on the charger all day (and it's fine) but the battery is still at 6% so obviously that is the problem. I'll have a new battery in a couple days and should be fine.

Wipe data/factory reset wipes the contents of the "data" partition. This is not the same as "user data." It will not touch your SD card. It will delete everything that is stored in the data partition, so all your user settings and system customizations will be lost. You'll lose text messages, call logs, address book, and a host of other things that are part of the system data partition, where system applications are installed. But applications that you download from the play store usually store their application data on the SD card, so while the applications themselves will be removed, the data will still be there. You photo album will definitely still be there after you perform a wipe data/factory reset. Please, you need to do some study.

I'd say be strong and wait. Trying a known good battery is the logical next step in troubleshooting.

No Factory reset does not wipe user data such as your pics, videos etc as creepycrawly said. And as far as you issue is concerned, I can say is replace your battery with a new one. I am pretty sure battery is the culprit here

Notice where it says deletes "content such as pictures". The internal sd gets wiped so it's gone unless I copied it to my little 2Gb card.
Fortunately, I didn't go there. I just threw it in a drawer to wait until Wed. ;>

Yes, actually, in stock recovery it does unless they are on external sd. Btw, I did put it back the way it was with cwm, ajk, and super nexus 2 without losing anything.

Glad to hear that you were able to recover! :good:
Just a reminder for when you replace your SII - the S4 has a locked bootloader so unless you get one that is PRE-MF3 update then you can only run rooted stock and no custom kernels.

What's your favorite device @AJ? Would you advise anything other than the S4? I like stock if it can be debloated but... my name is Sharon and I'm a flashoholic.

I really like the S4 so long as you get one that you can use custom ROM/kernel on. I am looking all over trying to find another 1 for myself since my original S4 got updated.
Or :
An international GT-i9505 S4 would be great, but NOT the S4 with the exynos processor.
A T-mobile S4 (probably the best S4 overall)

Actually, I was thinking more about learning how the phone works so you would have a foundation to understand issues such as this. Leave it to AT&T to put out dis-information. The fact that they included the word "pictures" in that support article is just wrong. Pictures are not saved into the data partition on the I777. You will note that the article also says "Data stored to an SD card will not be erased unless otherwise selected." That means both the internal SD card, and any external SD card. Since pictures are saved to the internal SD card, they are not touched by a wipe data/factory reset. All the other things mentioned in that article are accurate. You can verify this for yourself if you want. First save your pictures to your computer (if you are worried that the what I am saying is wrong) and then perform a wipe data/factory reset. You'll see that the pictures are still there afterwards. Or ask anyone here on the forums. Everyone uses a wipe occasionally and will know this.

I feel slightly offended by your implication that I'm ignorant about how my phone works. I'm not an expert but I've learned a lot in the last year and consider myself reasonably knowledgeable. I took your advice to ask the community. I will test it myself in a few days. Part of my personal experience is the "factory reset" on the stock kindle fire which definitely does wipe ALL user data.
Sent from my GT-p511x

On the SGH-I777, and presumably on other Samsung phones, when you perform a "Factory data reset" from within the system settings, there is a tick box that you can check which will also "Format USB storage" as the data wipe is performed. (USB storage is the technical term for the internal SD card.) However, when performing a wipe data/factory reset from within recovery, and that would include stock 3e recovery, there is no option to also format USB storage.
I am not familiar with Kindle, but I would not assume that the memory partitioning, or other functions of the device for that matter, would be the same or similar to a Samsung device.
And by the way, no disrespect was intended.

Thanks creepycrawly. I think that clears it up for me. See I learned something! ;p

need help... with multiple issues.

Hey guys I have some problems with my tbolt. I am trying to avoidgetting a refurbished if possible but my phone is terrible right now. I was running cm7 when I first started having problems. My wifi and Bluetooth stopped working. I figured it was cm7 so I switched back to a sense base. No luck. Now I'm geting rebootsconstantly when the phone isn't being used. I'm typing on it right now but if I set it down for 3 minutes it power cycles twice and then cuts off completely. I have used different batteries and cases and I've tried a sense and a also Tom... multiple kernals and radios. Its frustrating. To say the least. If anyone has any guesses or further troubleshooting Before I am forced to call and get a refurb.... please let me know! The battery is not loose btw as I can shake it as much as I need and it wont cut off until I lay it down still. And it works fine while its charging or if I'm playing on it.
Only things I can think of, and these are pure guesses, are - try powering it off and removing the SIM card for a minute or two. If that don't work, maybe try formating your SD card in recovery (after you back it up to your PC of course).
Are you getting these reboots while in recovery? Also, are you restoring anything with titanium backup (or a similar app)?
Again, these are simply guesses... Seems like you already tried everything that I would have tried already.
Good luck!

No restarts in recovery ... I will take the SD out and try that for the time being as I don't have a PC nearby and ill ty that with the sim as well
Removed SD card and reinserted sim... no luck
Man, that is bizarre! Not too sure what else to tell you other then restoring back to stock and sending it back.
Maybe someone else will stumble across this thread and offer you some different advice ... Good luck!
Well, how about another shot in the dark.....
Wipe EVERYTHING. Just go down the list on "mounts and storage" and wipe it all. I don't think you have anything to lose at this point. That would be what I'd be doing.

+1 what he said! I would make a backup of the important stuff on the SD card and wipe everything possible and start from scratch. I might even unroot and go back to 100% stock for a day or so and see if you get reboots and issues then. If you dont reroot and try a fresh install of a ROM. If you get reboots go back to stock again. It won't be a quick process but at least you will figure out what is going on. If stock gives you reboots then it's time to make VzW give you a new phone.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I have a phone on the way. Until then I think I may have found a temporary fix.... leaving a song playing in the background with the media volume turned all the way down. ... the phone doesn't cut off.... weiiiirrd. I may have failed to mention it too but I haven't had wifi or Bluetooth for a while either. Thanks for ur help
Damn, that is weird as hell!
Hope the "new" phone works out well for you...

Filesystem corrupts and then hard resets

So guys I guess I need some opinions here. that's what happened.
it's been a while now that at random times the phone freaks out randomly. Most frequently google reader returns error loading the news, and some games do not load (instant FC after launch). the last two times the "freakout" happened, WiFi wouldn't turn on just returning "error" instead.
the only solution then is rebooting the phone. Upon reboot I get some error message regarding the corrupted filesystem and then the phone hard resets itself.
this whole thing has happened to me at least 10 times lately.
- I am not 100% sure but it shouldn't be ROM-dependant. I am running 407 deodexed since some time but I am pretty confident it happened under stock froyo.
- It seems the freakout happens specially (but not only) if the phone gets bumped or shaken. for example I was lying belly up on my bed one day and I was holding it while it "fell" on my chest... literally a 10-15cm drop.
- I have reflashed deodexed 407 saturday evening and so far so good.
so my guess is that something bad is happening to the innersd. given the mechanical/physical nature of the event that triggers the problem I'm more inclined to think it's a loose contact/bad connector/bad soldering/something detached from PCB=>something physically broken-kind of problem, but I'm open to suggestions. any input is mostly welcome (and I know how to use the thanks button)!
I think the first thing i would do is a full nandroid back up then a dell factory wipe the one in the white screen not streakmode and if that fixes it load your programs one at a time you may have a program it doesn't like Tim

I do hope so but I wouldn't place any bet. I might consider replacing it with the external sd for starters, just to be sure that's the culprit, and then get a class 10 card somewhere. I can just hope it's not the controller...

Unrooted Evo 3D (Sprint CDMA) not recognizing SD card after ICS update - how to fix?

i updated my phone to ICS about an hour ago and since then, my phone keeps rebooting and doesn't seem to recognize the micro SD card (the same one I've used in the phone since I got it on release day). The card is listed in the Storage menu in settings with the correct total and free space, but it doesn't recognize it otherwise. Trying to unmount it does nothing, no pictures are showing up in my gallery and the apps that are on my card are showing on my home screens with the default Android logo instead of the actual app logos. Anyone know how to fix this? The phone is not (and never has been) rooted.
The phone is working better without the card, but I can't view texts. It just says Loading... and the message never comes up.
Is there something I have to do to get ICS to recognize the micro SD card? Or do I have to do a factory reset and/or format the card (two things I don't want to have to do)?
Having the same issues here. I'm wondering if it could be something on the SD card itself that could be causing the problem. Like an app that is installed on the card or something. Thinking about clearing the card and trying it again.
Do a factory reset. With OTA updates an unrooted phones, a lot of people have problems. This is why rooted users wipe everything (factory reset) when flashing roms, because updating rom's without wiping usually causes random issues like this.

That's what I did last night (formatted the SD card) and my phone hasn't rebooted since then. Probably an app on the card that wasn't working with ICS.
I finally found it!
After hours of looking it up, i found the biggest issue I have ever had with my phone. Maybe second, after my down volume button broke (didnt fix that, ICS kinda did). Or maybe third, after my Micro SD card crashed, and when I went to repair it, it somehow wasnt the one the phone comes with...
Lets get on with this. I have waited so long, and thinking that they had a whole year to develop a perfect update, they screw it up.
I want to know why the hell the Micro SD keeps crashing my phone. I try to transfer the stuff, but it doesnt allow it. Should I buy an adapter and transfer the stuff to my pc? What will happen to all my game data? How do I restore that? Do I factory reset the phone only, the SD card, or both? I really need a perfect explanation what to do, and as much technological I am, I dont want to mess anything up.
And another thing, which might be irrelevant, but those other Googlers or HTC EVO 3D owners might have this same issue. Why is there a thick red border around the screen of my phone ( sometimes, it flashes periodically). I think its a developer option, but im not 100% sure. I really hate buggy software.
Oh, and if you guys didnt notice, or it might be just for me, but my computer doesnt detect my pc, and even the red charging light takes 5 minutes to turn on. If HTC doesnt do anything about this, im going to root, and believe me, I tried.
If HTC cant, help you guys can. Happy typing your response!

You don't factory reset the SD card, you format it. It's worth a shot, but if the card is bad it won't help.

[Q] Battery pulled out during factory reset

Hello,
I'm writing this as a last refuge to console myself. I got caught up in a dangerous situation today in which I had to give up my android phone i.e. Motorola Atrix 2 in order to save my life. Since all my personal and official data was stored on the sd card, which I couldn't pull out from the phone, I had activated the factory reset - including sd card formatting - before handing it over. As luck would have it, I was pressurized to give it up before the process finished so in a bid to save the data from getting into the wrong hands, I pulled out the battery while it was erasing data from the sd card according to the dialog box. My questions is: What are the chances of the sd card getting corrupted and the data becoming inaccessible? I need to know as I'm under a lot of stress because of it and there's no chance of getting it back. I had changed my google account's password the moment I reached home (after fifteen to twenty minutes) so I also the phone would have locked out. Please respond at the earliest.
Thanks.
It probably deleted some files depending on how long the dialog was up. From my past experiences sometimes I got a corrupt card (very rare) and sometimes a few files were deleted. The only thing you can do from this point is to actually check and see it any damage was done.

Could be a lot of data was deleted but it shouldn't be corrupt as far as I know just most likely completely formatted. So yea, tell you carrier that you don't have the phone anymore. The person who took your phone will just have to create his own Google account afterwards. Call the cops? They could trace the number and whatnot. I guess I didn't understand what I was reading the first time I read the post, you were held at life or death to give up your phone? That sounds horrifying, I'm sorry.

Being an ordinary citizen, I don't have such luxuries available in my country so I have to do pretty much everything myself. I was and it's been a terrible experience - mostly just because of my data. If he logs in from another Google account on my phone, will he be able to access my apps/contacts? I had taken the battery and sim out while it was factory resetting so he'd be asked to sign-in again, right?

Yes, I'm still in shock and under a lot of stress.
Factory resetting hadn't completed and it was erasing sd card when I pulled the battery out hoping it would get corrupted. To see what happens in such a situation, I went to a friend's place today who has the same phone. We used his spare sd card of 4 gb (mine was 32gb with at least only twelve gbs free) to perform the same action. I started the factory reset with sd card formatting and pulled the battery out once it started erasing (didnt give it as much time as I had given to mine. After doing that I inserted the battery again and restarted the phone to check the sd card but it had corrupted although it didn't ask me for any gmail id. That's some relief but my card had larger storage so there are some doubts as well. *sigh*
I don't remember backing them up so I'm not sure.
I wish I could...
Thanks a lot, brothers. Do let me know what you think. Its very much appreciated.
You take care as well.
Apps and contacts data are linked to your Gmail so the guy shouldn't have access to any of your data without your Gmail account. Good news that the sd card got corrupt, at least it's safe to know there's a higher chance to know it corrupted or not.
If you backed up your contacts on sd card and he finds the vcard he will restore it into another android phone! I think the sd card will got corupted!

Good to know that! I agree. I'm just hoping everything and everyone remains safe...
Just to be 100% safe, I would change the password to all my major information first. Things that have to do with credit cards like PayPal or ebay. But since you factory reset the phone it also removed the pass code you had put in it (I'm almost certain it does). Just watch yourself is all I can say, watch your online activities to see if he has any of your info.

Weird shut down issue

First off, this happened when I got the phone when it was fully stock.
Now it's rooted, unlocked bootloader, s-off running carbon aosp.
Randomly my phone will shut down/off and will NOT power back on until I plug it into a charger (house charger, car charger sometimes works).
I;ve tried getting into recovery when it does this and it does nothing at all.
It's a PITA like today I was riding my mountain bike on trails miles away from my car and I was supposed to give my buddy a ride to work and my chain decided to snap (and of course I forgot my multi tool in my garage) so I had to walk back and had no way to call him and let him know.
I've read it's happened to other people and they had their phones replaced and it still happened, is this that common? what can it be
There is some instability with the new 3.4 kernel on certain AOSP ROM's from what I've read (not sure if Carbon is one of them). First thing I would do would be to flash a stable Sense ROM and see if the problem persists. If so, you may have a hardware issue. At that point you can take it in to Sprint and let them look at it. If you're concerned about the phone being rooted & S-off you can run Viperboy's RUU tool, which will restore your phone to totally stock condition.

Do you think it could be a SD card issue? My card is a few years old. I took my catf out and put it in I guess only half way and the phone shut off and did the same thing. I put it back in and un mounted it and so far its fine. I formatted it before switching from my epic 4g touch.

It's possible I suppose. I've seen people post before about issues with their cards. Try a different one and see.

Haven't had a chance to buy a new SD card, but I removed mine and have not had a reboot since.

the card is oldddd. i formatted it twice via my pc.
I'm backing it up to my pc and then buying a new card, 16gb's are $15-20 nowadays lol this one is like a class 2 or some low one, it's back when they were $30-35 a card. Thinking of a Sony or PNY class 10 at Fry's it's like $15-20 the sony is supposed to be up to 40mb/s

Similar problem with random reboots
I was on vacation and in the middle of the trip my phone just started going insane by rebooting on its own. Most of the time it would only get half way though the boot screen then shut off again. It varied how far through the bootscreen it would last then shut off. Occasionally the phone actually made it through the entire boot process, once i was at my home screen it would pop up the power menu and ask if i wanted to power off, reboot, or airplane mode. Then the three hard buttons at the bottom of the phone would flash and then it would shut off. This happened all through vacation. Also, the phone did not always recognize a charge, however, sometimes it did. Once I got home the problem stopped and the phone is not having the random reboots. I went to Gulf Shores, Alabama if your curious..
However now my sd card will not mount to internal storage and I cannot take pictures, use spotify, watch videos i have saved, etc. When I try to pull up these apps, the phone says no external storage available. The thing is, if I go to file manager, I can see the sd card and all of the files, its just when i try to open them from file manager, it loads the gallery app and then it tells me no external storage.
When I go to setting>storage, the option to mount sd card in the sd card spot works. But when I try to mount sd to the internal storage, it does not work. Im seriously confused as I did not download any new apps, or download anything at least within a week prior to going on vacation.
Im running..
CM10
S-On
Hboot 1.15.000
OpenDSP-v25.1.0.32.0405
eMMC-boot
If Im in the fastboot menu, and I click bootloader, it says
SD checking..
Loading [PJ75DIAG.zip]
No Image!
I have done a factory reset and the problem still persists.
Any help would be great.
anyone have recommendations?

If you can, backup your sd internal and external, boot into recovery and mount as usb, then format both...

thanks for response, sorry for being late to the party.
I cannot mount as usb. the loading circle just spins. when i try to do it in TWRP, it wont let me either.
also when i go to wipe cache or whatever else, it said failed to mount sd card in the console log and it wont let me wipe anything.
when i go to storage in settings, the problem seems like it is with internal storage. under internal storage, it says "mount sd card", when i do this, i get a notification saying preparing sd card but then it goes away after about 2 seconds. then the internal storage area says "mount sd card" again.
I am willing to wipe everything because I got all my photos off the sd card so im okay with wiping it all and starting over. i already did a factory reset but it didnt help. unfortunately i cant wipe cache and other things so i dont know what to do. thanks for your help!
