[Q] installing new kernel without installing new rom - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I know maybe it's a noob question, but I have installed cyanogenmod 9 in my Sony Live Walkman, and the kernel that comes with it.
Can I install a new kernel (like rage kernel) without having to install the rom (CM9) again? It will work just replacing the kernel?
Thanks!!!

You have to download the kernel onto your sd card (make sure it is for cm9). And then you can just flash it using cwm recovery  no need to flashing rom again

Another question: I'm used flash my kernels with flashtool. I entered in CWM in recovery mode, but couldn't find the option to flash the kernel (just the rom). How can I install the kernel without the need of the flashtool (without computer)?
Thanks again!!!

in recovery choose install zip from sd card, then choose zip from sd card. After that you can select your kernel and flash it
Press thanks if I helped you

if you've got the kernel in zip format, ready to be flashed, then go ahead in cwm and flash it.
But if you don't have it in zip format, then you'll have to make one for yourself.
For that, you'll need to extract the zlimage from your kernel and replace it with the zlmage from your cm9 kernel, not forgetting to recompile the kernel. make a flashable zip, or download one, and flash it.

You need to install kernel and ROM both, this kernel is not compatible with stock ROM. Go to Recovery to install ROM.
can you give me the step by step explanation my friend?
because i ussualy flash the kernel first,
should i flash the rom first via cwm?
just flash the kernel, put the kamarush rom on your micro sd card, boot to cwm on the new kernel, wipe everything out, install zip and reboot to system that should do it.
If you Flashed Kamrush's kernel first then you'll have to flash his ROM. His ROM only works for 4.0.4. If you haven't put his ROM on your SD Card, ull need to put it on and flash it through CWM. But if you dont want ICS just flash someone else kernel and your phone should work again. Your choices are:
X kernel
Rage Kernel
Boof Kernel
Those work with 2.3.4
thanks but my problem is when i finished flash the kernel my phone do not booting into system after i flash the kernel,so i cant flash the rom via cwm
ok just press volume down several times on the sony logo until it takes you to cwm that is the way you enter to cwm in custom kernels
the sony logo did not appeare after flash the kernel...i try other kernel and works, but this kernel (rc3) did not works in my pnone
did you downloaded the right kernel?? this rom and kernel supports 4 devices.

Kernel is properly installed. You need to install the ROM via Recovery. Make sure the ROM .zip file is on the SDcard.
When screen gets brighter during starting, click Volume DOWN button many times until you enter the recovery. Then install zip from sdcard and choose it.
Try flashing the kernel manually using the terminal commands or update Flashtool (that might be your problem)

Sorry for this question but I do not have any customization on my XS. I have copied the CWM.ZIP and ROM.ZIP files on SD card. Could you please suggest how can I flash ROM.ZIP as I do not have any custom recovery installed.
p.s. The bootlocker is also locked.

This is a fix only for who is installing custom ROMs without custom kernel. To install recovery, search for it.
I have had a problem, after flashing Rom, before flashing your zips I wiped cache, and started this problem in recovery:
Can't mount CACHE/recovery/log
then after flashing your zips phone stuck reboting at logo sony, so I have to start from zero, do you know why have that ocurred, is it because wiping cache?

for the xperia sspeed rom for example, you can also use the stock kernel, but why can't i use it for cm10?
That's a stock based rom so you can use the stock kernel. Whereas CM10 is AOSP based so many things in the Kernel are different for example Wi-Fi modules as well as other things

If you want jelly bean, there's Cyanogenmod 10 by FXP, JellyVanilla and Cyanogenmod 10 by expeacer.
The easiest way to flash a kernel is via flashtool. Just download flashtool and install it. Go to the installation folder and install the drivers. For unlocking bootloader, fastboot should work for you and sdk tools should be installed.
Download the rom you want and the recommend kernel , place the installation zip file on your sd card and go back to flashtool.
In flashtool you click on the flash and select fastboot mode. You turn off your device and hold down the volume up key while connecting to pc. The blue led will light up. Then you select the boot.img you downloaded first. It should be named boot.img, otherwise rename it. Just select it and flashtool will automaticly flash it.
CHECK THE LOG BEFORE YOU PLUG OFF DEVICE!! If there are no errors, just restart device and press volume down again and again. Then you are in cwm. Look in the tutorial how to install the rom what has to be formatted/wiped (like cache or data, etc) and do it like it's explained there. Then select install zip from sd card -> choose zip and install it.
Just reboot and enjoy
After seeing the links of jellybean roms i changed my mind. They have much problems! So could you suggest me an ICS rom?

Expeacer's exmiui.
In this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694027 link it says that it has auto root. This means tha if I flash this kernel then i can flash the ExMIUIv4 2.8.10 rom without rooting?
Miui rom already rooted by default. Such autoroot kernel will give problem with miui rom, u'll get superuser from the kernel and lbe guard from miui at the same time.
I've fixed such bugs in my kernel, try it if u want.

Ok, can you send me a link of your kernel?
So,
1) I flash your kernel using flashtool
2) I download CMW (when i have your kernel and the stock ics)
3) I flash the custom rom
This is all i have to do?
Look in dev subforum, my kernel thread is there.
Anyway:
1- flash kernel. Obviously your bootloader need to be unlock to do this.
2- cwm recovery already in kernel, dont need separate download/install for it. Just boot into cwm after u flashed kernel.
3- do factory reset from cwm, then do wipe dalvik cache.
4- flash rom.
5- reboot into rom.
6- profit

You don't need to download cwm, it's included in the kernel! Just flash kernel and reboot, while rebooting press volume down again and again!
EDIT:: Sorry, posted at nearly the same time

everything is explained there. After unlocking your BL, flash a custom kernel RAGE KERNEL is my favorite as of now. If it gets into bootloop, meaning, your phone enters the boot animation but cannot get into the home screen, just make a full wipe in CWM. Then reebot. Works 100% with me!

You can unlock your bootloader officially, but you will lose your "DRM" . As a result, "track ID" and some features of "Facebook inside xperia" will never work again.Unlocking bootloader via "test point method" is somewhat hard. But it is the best way. That is how I've unlocked mine..!!

Yes u need to turn on usb debugging. Unlock bootloader then flash any custom kernel you will get CWM installed. Then flash the tweak pack you dont need a custom rom for that. Its fantastic u can use it with stock rom
Thanks a lot man, you really helped me.
I have another question. I decided to put linario kernel and in instructions it says flash via flashtool, go to CWM, flash wifi modules. In tutorial I read it says that after flashtool you have to go to CWM and choose install zip from sd card. So, my question is in CWM do I need to choose install zip from sd card or no?

[Q] Is this the right procedure to flash kernel/ROM on Xperia U?

Hello!
Sorry if this thread looks repetitive, but I'm new on this kind of thing and just want to make sure all goes right with my Xperia U! Tomorrow will complete one week of reading, researching and learning about ROMs, flashing, kernel, recovery, etc.
Can someone please just confirm if my steps are correct?
First of all, I have just unlocked the bootloader. Tryied to root too, but got some problems (ST25a, B154 stock kernel x.x) and later found root wasn't necessary as custom kernels already comes pre-rooted.
I want to use this Stock ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-u/u-development/rom-stock-jellybean-4-1-2-v6-t2284394
Wich tells me I need to flash this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-u/u-development/kernel-experimental-v12-t2326515
Here are the steps I think I have to do:
- Move both .zips (kernel and ROM) to SD card
- On PC, extract the boot.img from KERNEL .zip file
- Flash boot.img with flashtool
- Reboot in CWM recovery mode (provided by the boot.img, i guess)
- Full wipe (cache, data, dalvik-cache)
- Flash KERNEL .zip via CWM
- Flash ROM .zip via CWM
- Reboot
Is this right? I really got confused when I saw every .zip has a boot.img on it x.x
Yes,Evert step is correct...But when you boot the phone in recovery, you don't need to flash the kernel zip...You already flashed it,don't need to do it again!

Really? I don't understand exactly what each files in that .zip do, but, boot.img ins't just a way to boot? The kernel will be installed with just that? What about the other files in that .zip? Is it for the case of already having recovery mode?
PS: sorry about my bad english
Edit: Do I have to move the .zip file to SD-card without the boot.img? Or I just leave it there?
Ok, this is it. I'll try this proccess today.
