Is this 6.3 Mega version's boot loader locked? I've looked high & low and ran myself in circles and I'm confused.

No. Only the AT&T version has a locked bootloader.
Thanks for the quick & to the point answer. I believe I'll swap using my S4 for this big baby.

Nay... in my I9205 I have flashed first CWM then TWRP without problem. Only you have to bear in mind so after flashing recovery DO NOT REBOOT but instead go immediately to recovery itself. If not you will have stock recovery.

Why are some devices coming with locked bootloaders and others unlocked? All of the Google I/O devices seem to be unlocked, but I've read mixed things on retail devices. Some have locked bootloaders while others have unlocked ones.
Are the locked bootloaders unlockable?
If I understand correctly, devices with locked bootloaders can still obtain root, but the disadvantage is that custom kernels cannot be flashed. Is this a correct assumption?
The truth is nobody knows why some are locked and some are not. And as far as we know, the only way to unlock is by using signed keys from Samsung, which nobody has. As far as root and kernels are concerned, you are right. Locked bootloaders can be rooted, but the kernel cannot be switched out

Thanks for the info.
Can you define custom kernel? My Samsung captivate is locked but I can flash a miui or cm7 kernel as well as the European version kernel of my phone.
I'm locked on the tablet but I can flash pershoot kernel.
Still unsure the disadvantage of my locked bootloader

The only thing you can't do with a locked Tab is use nvflash. The bootloader boots unsigned kernels and initrds. The locked bootloader will even let you ODIN in your own recovery so you can flash unsigned zips.

Thanks! I figured out the nvflash the first day trying to root and then later tried to use supercurio kernel, it kept me from flashing. But since I was able to use odin to do everything else and get CWM, I saw no disadvantage.
If I were take supercurio kernel and build it so its zipped for CWM, I can flash the kernel or am I missing the point?

If you use an unlocked padlock during bootup then you are unlocked. If nothing shows up, your locked.

for the previous version of the tab there was an app developed from rotohammer that would tell you if the bootloader was locked or not. not sure about the 10.1.
I don't think the padlock thing apply to it though... Maybe someone else here has a better answer.
That patch will not work on Galaxy Tab 10.1 ,
I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 , in which i want to flash a customized kernel (downloaded the source code from opensource.samsung.com) but my bootloader is locked , and I am not even able to get the backup of my kernel image with the help SGS Kernel flasher, does all this because of locked bootloader ?
Any one have any idea how i should proceed to unlock my Tab and flashed custom kernel ?
Hi i am new to xperia world. i have tried to install this rom <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640390>

MY quest is after 4.0.4 can i still update this ROM on my phone <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640390>

i have just bought new phone don't want to loose warranty as early as possible may be later i may dare to unlock it
i love developers who makes world look better place.. i am frequent visitor of xda from my first windows mobile since 3-4years ..
but i had very bad experience with z71 android handset which gave me lot of pain but i made full use of warranty period because there was no unlocking ..! just flashing lots of custom roms ..
but xperia is different i think i have to gain more confidence to start flashing.. because there will be no warranty once unlocked...
When you feel confident, you can Unlock you device by any method you prefer, follow the guide by following link,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409269
P.S, using official method to unlock the boot loader, you will void your warranty, but using XDA method you will have option to relock the boot loader again
Hope, this will help

you're welcome,
that means you are qualify to unlock your boot loader,
its not Pre-Unlocked !
if it shows No, that means you cannot unlock boot loader due to Manufacturer restrictions.
invoices presone
my phone is already rooted can i oerclock by setcpu without unlocking or do sommething etc
I think, overclocking need other then stock Kernel, check Kernels thread, which suit your overclocking need.
Does anyone know if there is going to be an upcoming update to the Casual software for unlocking bootloader on the newest firmware (MJ9) on the verizon galaxy note 2?
Or is there another tool for doing that?
I mistakenly did the OTA from verizon and I now I am unable to find a method for unlocking bootloader to install a custom recovery. Is safestrap possible for note 2?
thanks

I agree it worked for rooting the device, but I still can't install custom recovery, which means the bootloader is still locked. Anyway to unlock that?

Yes that works for rooting and no there is no way to currently unlock the bootloader on the 4.3 OTA.

Locked bootloader

Currently running MJ7 rooted with stock recovery (on boot it shows an unlocked lock with the word "Custom", which I don't believe means my bootloader is unlocked)
I've been waiting in the hopes that someone would find a solution for custom recovery, wondering if it's worth waiting on this build or if I should just allow the OTA to upgrade me

Nope. It doesn't mean your bootloader is unlocked at all.

They're very similar builds, the only downgrade you can actually do is MK2 to MJ7. So it doesn't matter which build you're on.
