Move files to new ext.sd and they disappeared!! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all and thanks for the support in advance
I have an s3 with stock rom, not even rooted, today I ve bought an ext sd 32 gb, formatted and through es file explorer I moved almost 8 gb photos and videos from my int.sd to the new ext sd
After almost 20 mins move was done and es file explorer shows all moved folders ok, of course none of these files were shown in Gallery
So I restarted the phone to scan the new folders
The thing is all 'new' folders on the ext.sd are shown with symbols like ~`vi000125 and inside them there is nothing!!! Space of 8gb is still occupied in the ext.sd and got free from the int.sd, so something was f***** up from the system or what?
What can I do next to recover these files?
Shall I remove the ext.sd and try/use a recovery app like recuva on a pc/laptop or try something more on the phone??
Thanks

Where did you buy the card? Official store?
Download h2testw.exe to test card for errors. Sounds fake to me. You'll need a card reader though.
Edit.. test the full capacity. Will take a couple of hours. Worth doing properly.

If the card is fake, they cannot be retrieved. Cannot tell you if the card is fake unless you run the tests.

Help needed - external SD card probably wrecked

As the subject says, I think I've wrecked my SD card, but hoping there might be something I can do before formatting.
I was using the Solid explorer beta, and launched DiskUsage from within the app to check the SD card. This caused a crash to black screen, and I eventually had to restart the phone. However, when the phone booted, it could not detect the SD card, and now tells me the card is empty. It's not detected by any app, I can't mount it from either within android nor from recovery.
I realise I'm probably screwed, but any help is appreciated.
Currently rooted, on stock ROM and CWM Touch recovery.
Cheers,
Erik

Through Windows try something like RECUVA and a card reader .

Thanks, I'll try that once I'm home at the pc. I've emailed the app developer as well, and waiting for a response from him.
Cheers,
Erik

Just format your sdcard. Use sd card formatter program(google it) to format completely your sdcard. Make sure you have card reader to perform this. And please post in Q&A section next time.

Try recovery software online. I haven't tried it myself but since you need it then go try it yourself.

Format = no recovery
There's nothing you can do. Technically if you "format" or delete something from within the filesystem, the actual object still exists until it is actually overwritten with a new object. However, since you cannot mount the internal storage as a USB mass storage device on a computer, you cannot use proper, PC based recovery programs.
There may be some Android based ones that work although, many wont as they will only work on your external SD card. Payinbg for one would be a massive risk and I have my doubts that any would find anything to restore.
Moving forward - to prevent this happening again in future, or at least to ensure if it does happen, you're covered, look into this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite
I use this to sync my external and internal sd on alternative nights, to my PC that is always on over wifi whilst I sleep. I never lose any data. Also, images could auto upload to dropbox.
There is a software called recuva or something like that on the net. Try googling it. I did the same mistake once. I managed to retrieve some but not all. But at least some were recovered.

Recuva will only work on mass storage devices which as stated, cannot be achieved on internal storage of an s3

There are some apps which works on both Internal Storage & SD card.
Example : Undelete for Root Users
Undelete for Android is an application for root users that allows you to recover any deleted files from your SD card or internal storage.
From My Experience Undelete for Root Users is a very good app.
But Sadly Nothing can Restore any file that has been written over

That's a Very good Idea...
Thank you so much for that
I Never thought about it...
From now onwards with the help of FolderSync i will never loose my data...
I actually tested undelete before my first response because I remember you mentioned it before but it will only do FAT so it doesnt detect the internal sdcard on my phone

also try DISK DIGGER. it helped me.
:good:

First stop using the SD card anymore because it may over write the data. You just try SD card recovery software to scan your sd card, I have heard one software that is “Remo photo recovery tool” and this tool is appreciated by industry experts also according to testimonials. It may aid you to recover your data. good luck!

Unable to move files to SD card

I am having a problem moving pictures or videos, or any file for that matter, from internal storage to my SD card. I have an ATT i527 rooted. It goes through the motions, then gives an error message saying paste error, unable to paste. Or I get another message saying unable to move. I've tried Google searches for this and haven't gotten anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. If this is even possible to do. Thanks a lot for any info.

Can you try to change your SD card and add another SD card ?
If you look it's working with another SD card then i think it is your SD card problem... Check it..

Try to reformat your sd card first before transfering a file.

Sometime i see just not only need format for solving that. But also some time they should not give transferring. I think SD card is only for one time useable. So i think buy new one is better than reformatting..

Too expensive for buying another one and better you try first formatting before buying.

This doesn't belong in development. Move files with a computer if its not working on the phone and apps with the app manager.

The easiest way is to get a file browser (I recommend ES File explorer. From there, simply copy or cut the files in 'sdcard' and move them to 'storage/extsdcard'
One other thing, For general questions like this, you need to be posting in this forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/help
They have it broken down there for a reason. I'm not trying to chew on your hide, but it keeps it a lot cleaner when you do, you stand a lot better chance of getting help, and it keeps the MODs happy.
