I have been using AOSP roms for a while now - but just restored a CleanRom backup and was blown away by the stock sammy browser smoothness.
Whats up with AOSP browsers or even chrome or firefox? They are no-where near as jerk free as stock sammy browser. Even a simple mobile site like news.google.com is buttery smooth on TW browser when scrolling fast - while it lags on AOSP or other browsers.
I know the sammy browser is hardware accelerated - but I thought so was aosp and chrome? Maybe the sammy drivers/TW makes all the difference?
Anyone know for sure?
Love the stock browser. Option to fit pages on the screen is clutch. No moving side to side constantly

I noticed the same thing. I did some looking and I believe on chrome the actual web content is ran with the CPU. Chromes UI is hardware accelerated but most web content isn't. I never used to like dolphin but it is hardware accelerated. Try dolphin and download the dolphin jetpack as well.

Depends what rom you were on. 4.3 didn't have the blobs so none of the stock apps work seamlessly. There is a bunch of tearing if you use a stock browser.
Chrome Beta works great though. I like to adjust the DPI to get the tabs on the top. The only way I got that from TW is by stealing it from another rom. The features on TW are great, but I really don't use them that often.

I guess It's all in the title : After 10 days of using the browser I can clearly say that I don't like it (checkered effect, pixelated zoom, cant double tap to zoom, text doesn't reflow...), and even though I tried other browsers (Opera, FF, Dolphin...) my favorite is still the stock browser from Gingerbread or the slightly modified one from Cyanogenmod.
Is there any way I can replace the samsung one with one of those ?
Thanx.
You can double tap to zoom, which also simultaneously reflows the text. But yeah about everything else you're right...the checkerboard effect is annoying :/ As of yet, there's no way to replace the Samsung browser with either the CM one or the standard Gingerbread one, sorry to disappoint...
Double tapping never really worked for me : it zooms but only by like 5% so it's pretty useless. Is there a setting somewhere ?
Thanx for the answer anyway

are you tripping the browser is incredible..
Nothing else is as smooth, i regret buying dolphin HD.
The samsung browser smashes everythign I compare it too including the iphone 4 so I'm not sure how you can be unhappy.

The stock browser is really good and definitely out does othe rbrowsers I've used. I find dolphin to be a bit troublesome and it is aesthetically unpleasent also.
I've found the browser to be fantastic. It's the only Android phone to have smooth scrolling like the iPhone. Why has it taken so long? :/
if you switch to a different browser it wont be as smooth because it wont be hardware accelerated. the samsung stock is optimized with the GPU it seems.
that said, i played with the Infuse and it too seems hardware accelerated, showed the checkered background, yet it reflowed text just like its supposed to. double tap reflowed text. and pinch to zoom reflowed text.
why would samsung implement on one device but not the other?

Maybe it's a bug on SGS2 that'll get fixed by a firmware update. Samsung needs to be aware of this bug though.

although i do have opera 11 aswell as it has slightly easier navigation.. for quicker browsing
I would trade the smoothness of stock browser for AOSP browser in a heartbeat.
Smoothness: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
Full screen : stock (0%) AOSP (100%)
text reflow : stock (10%) AOSP (100%)
text selection: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
window switch: stock (50%) AOSP (100%)
The window switching ui is just fancy but not practical at all. It require so many swipes and clicks to select/close windows.

Wow I didn't realize samsungs custom browser was not likes this much. Is it really that bad? Makes me enjoy my stock browser much more.
Is anyone able to pinch-to-zoom using Maxthon Browser? Either the tablet version or the version for Android phones. If I could get it to work, Maxthon would easily be my browser of choice.
One and only bump. Let me know.
I just installed it on CM7 and it worked right away. The phone version, that is.
Sent from my Nook Tablet using Tapatalk
Thanks for checking. I really just need to flash CM7 already, I'm getting sick of things not being compatible with the stock ROM.
Yeah, pinch to zoom doesn't work with Maxthon on the B&N ROM. Double-tap does zoom in and out, and the on-screen zoom buttons do work.
It's not only a problem on the NT though: http://forum.maxthon.com/viewthread.php?tid=81629
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the bug was fixed for most devices on one of their more recent updates. Unfortunately, the NT wasn't one of those devices, haha.
I really do like Maxthon though, especially the ability to create your own navigation gestures directly on screen. It seems to worth a lot smoother than Dolphin HD's system.
Thanks for checking on that for me, rete.
does it seem to you too that the note has identity issues? When I visit web sites with my captivate and double tap the screen the font enlarges to a readable size. with this phone this behavior is unpredictable. Any ideas as to what my phone is going thru and would therapy be in order or is it just growing pains and give it some time?
What browser are you using? I'm using Opera, and double tap consistently zooms in for me.
try dolphin browser

I've noticed though that Dolphin lags quite a bit when scrolling around a webpage. The stock browser is much smoother.

I agree with you about the lag on Dolphin browser. Although it has more functionality the stock browser is much smoother. I did a simple test between Opera, Dolphin HD, Boat, OverSkreen and Stock and I found that Stock, Opera, Boat and OverSkreen were the only satisfyingly fast ones. Opera is very fast but I find I don't like it's functionality. OverSkreen is fantastic but honestly feels more gimmicky to me at the moment as I haven't found a good use for multiple browsers simultaneously. At the moment I've been using Boat browser which has been to me the best mix of functionality and snapiness. It has a really customizable tool bar and lots of quick buttons so I would suggest it to you.

Did SAMSUNG already state "It's not a phone, not a tablet"?
Because its both.

Then that's the answer for Op statement??(question) in the title
Using Dolphin: I have the user agent set to desktop and I dont use any plugins and it runs about as smoothly as the stock browser (which is to say, it isnt fantastically smooth but it isnt unusable either).
However, I also hadnt rebooted the phone in three weeks either so I decided to do so now and just tested again with www.cnn.com with both the stock browser and Dolphin and it is MUCH smoother after a reboot (again, both are about the same).
My phone is stock unrooted.
To help the stock browser perform more like a tablet however, I do the following on every new Android device I get...
Open the stock browser.
Hit the menu button.
Tap Settings.
Tap the 'Auto Fit Pages' option.
I also UNcheck the option 'Load Images' (to make pages load faster - not related to making the browser work more like a tablet but Im mentioning it in case people find it useful).
You could also change the zoom level (the top most option) to far instead of the default medium zoom level - just be warned that this will make the text on web pages small - possibly too small for some people.
Can you give a specific website that you are double tapping on that is giving the response you are talking about? Every page Im going to with the default browser is taking me to a mobile web page which has nothing to double click on.
I love the quick control feature on the stock ICS browser, but the limitations and crashes makes me want to move on. Is there something like the "quick control" feature or add-on available for Dolphin HD or another available browser? What i like about it is that you can touch a side of the screen anywhere and navigation buttons pop up at that spot.
Do you mean the keyboard shortcuts like on a regular laptop?
If so, I have looked, but no success.
A lot of developers aren't acknowledging physical keyboards yet i guess
Try ICS Browser+, its exactly the same as the stock browser with quick control, but a bit more stable

Thanks Phoenix. I'll check it out.
Thank V. I'm talking about a Labs add-on. It's worth checking out.
Which one is better? Share your opinions.
Everyone talks about Google Chrome. But, I like Dolphin Browser HD because of its add-on support. All bookmarks and Add-ons are one swipe away. And, there's an add-on for quick desktop toggle, too. Worth mentioning that it supports advanced gesture and voice commands!
for me is better dolphin because google chrome is awful with the battery and my battery does not last long.
The new Dolphin HD is super fast if you are on ics.
For now Dolphin Browser HD is the best browser than any other present in the playstore.
Google Chrome is still in the beta state and not available for most countries.
So Dolphin Browser HD wins for now !

Google Chrome is out of beta as announced in Google I/O 2012.
I'll be the first to say I prefer chrome. It's much smoother ever since it got out of beta, I love how opened tabs and all your bookmarks are synced from phone to laptop and visa versa, I love the way tabs are handled the same way as tasks are. Swipe them left or right and they disappear. And also awesome is that you can switch between tabs by sliding from the left or right edges of your screen and into the middle. I guess you can say I'm a huge fan of tab management on chrome

Open tabs sync between phone and laptop is really a nice feature of Chrome which Dolphin users are jealous of.
When it comes to tab switching, I can use volume keys in Dolphin. But yes, managing a large number of tabs is a pain in Dolphin.
Dolphin Browser HD is the best browser with lots of features like multiple tab & Add-ons option like desktop Firefox browser. Dolphin Browser is the world's first Gesture, Sonar & Add-on enabled mobile web browser on Android.
Dolphin HD is good but with recent versions [on ICS] having more than 5 tabs open leads to a force close each and every time. Earlier versions didn't have that problem but I'd rather deal with that than Chrome. The add-ons support tho >>>
Dolphin HD has flash support, allows custom user agents and doesn't require ICS. On my GB Droid 3 its my default browser and I've been satisfied with it. If you have ICS or JB the default browser is much improved, I believe it uses a Chrome/webkit derived rendering engine anyways. It has flash and allows a desktop user agent.
What about the current versions on ics
No flash sets Chrome back for me even tho I use it as my main browser.

The standard ICS browser is, in my opinion, faster than any browser out there..
I use Dolphin HD on my tablet, but chrome on my phone... I personally like more Chrome, but on the tablet the Dolphin experience is a bit better.
I think stock ics browser is best out there.

I use Dolphin because it smoother, Chrome lags surprisingly much. Also Dolphin changes the layout of text when I zoom so I don't have to scroll sideways all the time

In dolphin you can't easily switch between tabs nor you can close tab easily.

I just hate the way it handles zooming. Chrome seems much better at that but more clunky with other things.
I keep going back and forth...

What? You click the open tab to close it. Is that hard? Switching is done by clicking it. That's one click, It's two clicks in chrome or the swipe thingy ( that one is actually really nice, I miss it a bit, but you can't say It's hard in dolphin). You can also assign gestures to switching tabs, but I haven't really found gestures that convenient.

I still use Dolphin, Chrome lags but also won't let me push that URL bar off the top for full screen browsing. Seriously, these devices all use 16:9/10 ratios, and the bottom of the screen on a tablet is already taken up by the taskbar, so Chrome has you almost "peering through a letterbox" at websites.
