emergency calls only (not what you think) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently using a I9100 on the 3 network (UK).
Whenever I am out of a signal area for a few minutes, my phone will display "Emergency calls only" as you would expect. However when I move into a signal area it doesn't switch back automatically. The only way to regain signal is to enable airplane mode then turn it back off.
Is there some setting that I'm missing, or is there an app that will automatically enable and disable airplane mode every say 5 minutes, but only when the "emergency calls only" notification is displayed.

Try a different modem mate.

I have tried a bunch and either ended up with poor 3G performance, or no change. Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks, but that app appears to only let me add a constant on/off at selected intervals. I want it to only try to cycle when the "emergency calls only" dialogue is displayed AKA out of signal. and stop cycling once signal is restored.

Also I need to add, that this thread was moved incorrectly to the S3 forum, should have been in the S2. But I just noticed that when I move back into a signal area, I can still access the web and use data but not make calls or sms? Seems strange... Any thoughts?

Interested to know if anyone else has experienced the same issue as mine. Don't think it is modem specific as I have tried the OHs and it does the same thing on stock Samsung (ICS).

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the issue. It still persists to this day. I have confirmed with three (3uk) that the phone is not blacklisted, and have tried multiple roms including stock with the same issue.

This is not good, and it is causing me lot of headache, as I am missing important Client calls anyone with a remedy?

Sounds like a network issue. Make sure you don't set the network mode to automatic/auto connect. Other than that, I can't think of much.
Edit.
Check your edge preferences and turn off any of the flip to mute functions. Also double check call rejection in Phone to see if it's rejecting calls for some reason.

Turn off your phone, and then turn it on pressing and holding Volume Up, Home, and Power button at the same time until you see a warning. Then press Volume Up to continue, and navigate using volume keys and select wipe cache/factory reset with the Home button, then reboot.
Please note that by doing this all your data will be lost.

You only get 3G, because you've selected WCDMA/GSM. Try to download a stock firmware for your device, and install it via Odin.

Can't receive ANY calls (straight to VM); poor quality on outgoing calls

Just bought a Z5 compact to replace my second Z3 compact... and upon backing up DRM keys and then re-flashing, unlocking bootloader, flashing recovery TWRP to install a ROM, have tried two variants of LOS and two other ROMs... NONE of which can receive calls.
what.the.actual.****.
all calls go straight to voicemail.
some outgoing calls simply don't go through (need to try 2x or 3x to even get carrier support)
and occasionally, when trying above, dropped "no network" and phone signal resets.
i've tried re-flashing various .ftf files (i'm based in US and am using a US based .ftf i compiled now... with clean flash).. nothing seems to be working. all symptoms the same across all .ftf files and ROMs.
about to return the phone as i can't crack this one. (but have years using /rooting android devices - never seen anything like this).
any ideas??? all help appreciated!!
thanks in advance.
Sounds like there's problem with the antenna?
Having the same problem. Nothing wrong with the antenna--can make calls, just takes 2-3 tries. I suspect that it possibly has to do with handover from 4G to whatever it's using for the call (the handover is too slow), and/or the fact that VOIP isn't working with my carrier (US T-Mobile).
Try forcing it to 3G (WCDMA preferred/GSM) in Settings > More > Mobile Networks.

This does fix the problem with incoming and outgoing calls (I set it to 2G preferred, not to 3G). However, as a result, you don't have fast internet access (which, of course, is necessary for basically everything the phone does minus SMS and plain old phone calls).
I went into the "Testing" menu (dial *#*#4636#*#*) --> Phone information --> three dots in upper-right-hand corner --> Select Radio Band --> US, or whatever's appropriate. This is leaving 4G preferred.
Based on very limited information (a couple outgoing calls that took only one try), things are somewhat better. I could be wrong, though: I haven't had any incoming calls (...that I know of).

Is there a good app that will auto drop to 2g when screen is off? I used to do this to save battery life, but sounds like it would also help solve this situation - agree that symptomatially, sounds like the issue is switching between 4g and 2g/3g - so would love to give this a try.
Any ideas on reco apps to set "2g when screen off" ? and also enable a widget that will force switch?

My phone did actually ring today (...spam, but still). I think the change in the Testing menu, as described above, has made a real improvement.

i've gotten SOME rings that come through and some that go straight to VM.
I've also seen my phone "pause" or "hitch" right before taking an incoming call successfully (suspecting this is the 'difficulty' we are guessing about between switching from 2/3g to 4g or vice versa which is causing problems)
half my calls still going straight to VM. Which actually isn't a horrible thing. except when i want to receive them. lol.
I guess its a issue with the baseband aka modem.
Try to flash different versions and recheck. It can take some time to find the besteht baseband for your area and provider.

Is it possible / advisable to flash *just* the baseband? Where would one find files for just the baseband? I'd prefer to avoid extracting from .ftf , but if that's necessary I'll do it.
Has there been progress with this? This is exactly my problem, faulty reception. Glad to hear you used a stock US rom. Mine is stock Australian, I am in US. So that seems not the problem. What about kernel? Have you tried different ones or compiled something? It is a software problem, should be solvable.
To flash baseband only get a .54 firmware ftf, flash it, in the exclude section - exclude everything but amss stuff and baseband. I will edit post with exact names cuz I'm outside rn
Edit: AMSS_FS_1, 2 and FSG and also MODEM.

Issues receiving calls and text

I haven been noticing that I been missing a lot of calls and getting delayed text messages once in a while I am currently running on the t-mobile network here in the US. I have a one plus 6t as well and I tested it and I receive my calls with no one mention that my phone has went to voicemail. I have even performed a hard rest to see if maybe it was an app or a setting and still continues. Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Call log shows no missed calls and asked several people to text me with the time they sent out the text and it's delayed at times for over 30 minutes thanks in advance
I've had an issue similar, no one could call me until I call them first, Just went straight to voicemail everytime someone tried to call me.. I think it has something to do with the Wi-Fi switch because I turned off the Wi-Fi and turned it back on and it corrected itself. I could still receive msgs but where delayed until then.

Hi mate,
I had similar issues (at least with delayed text's) when locked. It was a battery saving issue, just make the Messages always run without power-saving option enabled.
Had issues with calls when Call over WiFi was enabled (enabled by default), disabled it and now works flawless (even with VoLTE).
Yea, been having this issue since I replaced my S9+ with the Mate 20 Pro.
My MintMobile SIM registers as T-mobile on the Mate 20 Pro. Most of the calls I don't receive and my wife says it goes to voice mail after first ring.
Where in the settings I can make adjustments to help eliminate this issue? Thanks!

I'm having the same issue on MintSim in the US. Messages seem fine but sometimes calls seem to go straight to voicemail. There is no calls over wifi setting on my phone as far as I can tell (and no volte) so I would be interested if there is a fix for this as well. I never had the issue with my P20 Pro but it's happened several times with the Mate 20 Pro.
I'm tempted to manually input the MintSim APN settings but since the signal is very strong with the default T-Mobile settings I'm not sure how that could help.
I'm using the MintMobile Ultra APN settings. If I default to the T mobile settings, mms don't work.

This only happens to T-Mobile and most likely related to WIFI calling, incoming calls goes to voicemail right away for me sometimes (both Note 8 and Mate 20 pro), but my wife on AT&T never had this issue

Strange. With the default T-Mobile settings mms works for me and my signal app shows a stronger signal than with the Ultra settings.
Which signal app are you referring to? For me, I usually have to turn wifi off for mms to come in or sent out. It doesn't work when the wifi is On, with either the T-mobile or Ultra APNs.

Network cell info.
Hi everyone,
Did anyone find a solution to the problem? I still have an issue with text messages and calls. I'm wondering if I should get a new phone....
Actually I just found one. I believe it has to do with Wi-Fi calling being on. Normally this option is supposed to be usable under settings and mobile networks, but since I'm using T-mobile I find the option completely off the phone or so it seems. I downloaded quick shortcut maker from the Google play store. Once opened I just typed in the top search bar Wi-Fi. From there you'll see 3 icons, a phone, settings, and wifi. Select the settings icon, scroll all the way down. Now you should see 2 entries that read Wi-Fi Calling, select the first one, the click on the middle button that says try. Wifi calling should be enabled, just switch it off and that should be it. Attached some screen shots of the process so it shouldn't be difficult. I was going crazy when people said they tried calling so many times but not one I receive or messages that are delayed for up to 30 minutes. I hope this solution helps anyone in this situation
Wi-Fi calling on my Mate 20 Pro is grayed out. So that cannot be the case for me.
Yea, my wife gets very upset when she calls me. Out of 10 calls, just one will come through. She will leave a voice mail, and hours later I will get the notification.
Sent from my LYA-L09 using Tapatalk
You selected the first one? When trying the second wifi calling option in shortcut maker the wifi calling was greyed out and the slider didn't work at all
Same issue
I've been fighting with my Mate 20 Pro since the day I got it. I'm on T Mobile. Some calls go to voicemail, some calls make it through. It's hit and miss. I haven't been able to find a common denominator. There's also a cellular data issue with the phone. When streaming video, the connection will suddenly drop out. The phone shows good signal, but it loses data. Turning the cellular data off and back on again fixes this issue. I think the data issue may still be related to the Visual Voicemail issue that T Mobile has with these phones. I was able to get Visual Voicemail to work (mostly) but I think the data is still affected by the Visual Voicemail issue , albeit to a much lesser extent than then it was before. I've been in contact with T Mobile and they have no solution to this issue. They did a sim card swap for me, but the issue persists.
Same sort of problem here. I'm on a KPN business contract, have been for many years. Never a call problem with the mate 9 and 10 but if people call me on the m20pro they don't hear the dial tone so they usually hang up thinking my phone is switched off or something. This really sucks!
I loved the m10pro especially but the m20pro is not my friend due to the calling issue and the really crap LG screen.
I've posted this issue on T-Mobiles Forum in hopes of getting them to take notice. Here is the link.

There's another option that I disabled in Hope of fixing the call issue. I attached some images of what to look for. The option was enabled by default so just click on the slider to disable

SMS sending doesnt work

Hi all,
Has anyone faced an issue with sending SMS? Please see my attached screenshot. The red error message I get is: "Message was not sent. Click and try it again."
Basically clicking again on that message doesnt help and only helps to switch to airplane mode and than back, then its succesfull. But after some time the error appears again.
I am on crDroid v6.4. Android 10.
Thank you.
Are u using LTE only?
Hm, I just turned off option "Calling under 4G - improve calling and other communication services (recommended)" under SIM settings. Now my SMS works, thank you for a hint.
Do you think this issue is ROM related or its just general issue with PocoF1?

OK, glad to hear that.
Issue is from your network provider. It does not support (yet) VOLTE. VOLTE make you can send SMS and make a call even on LTE only network. So, consult to your network provider instead.
