Wifi calling and texting - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have not found a full thrwad to answer my 3 questions so if I missed something im sorry. My qustions is this os fully functional with custom builds or still just dev barely working shell. Second I seen something about tmo t999 being able to run this is it true or still being ported? And lastly I require wifi calling and texting due to lack of tmo connectivity in my building. Di es this or will it offer this? Thank u in advance

Ubuntu Touch is still evolving - stay tuned. The Beta release to the public is supposed to be next month.
The T-Mo variant of S3 is on the "Work in Progress" list (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices) but appears to be abandoned (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2186277&page=6) [???] since way back when UT was running under a CM boot. A lot has changed since then and I'm not sure your device's community has been following along...
As for WiFi calling with T-Mo - that is only on T-Mo skinned devices. My Lumia 521 has it - my Play Store purchased N4 does not have it and no App is available on Play Store to install it. If you don't get the phone from a T-Mo store, you do not get the WiFi calling.

The wifi capable is from touchwiz for tmo I have a tmo t999 but certain roms dont support wifi calling/texting. Thats why I asked

Right... Unless a Dev bakes it in, you won't get WiFi calling.

Fair enough thnx

[APP] T-Mobile WiFi Calling for JPK 2.2.1

After many hours of trying to get this working, I think I've finally succeeded.
Please test that both Wifi Calls and Normal Calls are working properly and that Wifi Calling doesn't force close.
Flash this with CWM. This was tested on BiWinning 3.0
So close to having this for gingerbread, I can almost hear my phone ring in my living room

Surprised, so many people were after this. Now it's been here for 6 hours and no one has flooded this thread yet?

I agree. I just think with the leap in gingerbread and themes for 2.2 this is lost. But i cannot wait for wifi calling in gingerbread. Great step forward.

I'm very happy about this, I'm going to try the new toxic or biwinning tomorrow. But I really can't wait to see this for 2.3

Same here, there's just not much demand now for 2.2.1 mods. With gingerbread having mostly working GPS, it is a "might as well" upgrade.

Awesome...
This is great. My wife's phone is running on a 2.2 ROM because there was no 2.2.1 version of wifi calling. I'll upgrade her tonight and see how it works.
Running biwinning and wifi calling so nice thanks

i guess its cuz after finding out that wifi calling still uses your minutes (asfter talking to a tmobile tech suppot), then thats why... i think most people think wifi calling is free... it is actually beneficial for especially for those people who have weak network signal on their place..

Awesome sauce! I banged my head against this one until I just couldn't do it anymore, then completely lost hope when I was providing logs to the Nexus S guys trying to port Wifi calling, and saw the constant failure they were running into. Man, this is good stuff!

I read an forum somewhere where people were calling tmobile and having added to their plan and so long as you have it added "officially" then minutes weren't debited from their plan. people with grandfathered plans won't be able to do this without losing their grandfathered plans. People were having better success adding this feature online with a live chat from tmobile, as some representatives had no idea what people were talking about while others added it with no problems. I guess it matters which rep your get. But there were many people conforming that once the feature was added they confirmed no minutes being debited in "my accounts" etc.

The way Wifi Caling works is that it uses the internet to send and receive both calls and txt(not MMS). So in theory this should work the same no matter where you are in the world. Now there have been reports of it working successfully and other reports where it was not. So for you I would simply goto a free wifi cafe and turn on Wifi, attach to that free wifi and then turn on wifi calling. If it connects then send a txt to verify it is connected. If it goes through then you will have txt and calling as if you were standing in the US. in theory that is.
Thanks... Ill try it on jpj hopefully it doesn't charge us allot

Q- Tmobile WiFi calling app

I searched a bit bit can't seem to find an answer to this, which surprises me. Had anyone gotten the tmobile WiFi calling app to work on the At&t Note? I know there are options, but none seem to work as well as the one that comes straight from tmobile.

Does gtalk work? It works for me but I dunno I never use WiFi calling...

I gave up on that thing about six weeks ago. Now I use Viber. It works in any country I've been in, on wifi or cellular data.
T-Mobile WiFi calling is tied up in the kernel, to my knowledge you would need a custom kernel for it to work, or a hack that adds the necessary data to the kernel to make it work. I have a T-Mobile HD2 and when I was using it , tons of kernel modding went into making WiFi calling because of course the hd2 wasn't originally android and it needed a modded kernel to make it work, and even after it working it wasn't very stable .
RoloRacer Paranoid on JellyBean
I've been searching for weeks as well and came up with nothing. I've read that it's part of the kernel, part of the TouchWiz framework, etc. Seems there's way too many factors to get the native wifi calling for t-mobile. Apparently, back in the day t-mobile was using GAN based wifi calling, and it was an app. People got it to work on the t-mobile sensation 4g, but that's an HTC phone so it won't work for us. I was reading up on a thread in the galaxy s2 forums of some devs trying to get the native wifi calling on that device (FYI, tmo now uses an IMS based wifi calling structure) and there's a lot of work involved, including modifying some of the framework files, the phone apk and the settings apk.
The best solution at this point is to just flash the Tmo Note stock ROM in the Tmo Note Dev forum. User Tomin.fhl was kind enough to make it flashable and wifi calling works great for me on that. Just wish I was able to use AOKP or PA with wifi calling though
Yeah, I figured out how to get it done, just flash the TMobile stock ROM which is fine with me since I'm on TMobile and actually like the stock... Then you need a new Sim.
Sent from my SGH-T879 using Tapatalk 2
Dont you need the AWS chip for that stuff, isnt this a hardware limitation??????
Whatever you need is already built into our phones. I have been using the tmobile WiFi calling feature in my at&t note for a while now. No problems.

What's the name of the app, can I get that from play store or can you please share .apk file
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
If you follow the instructions to flash any stock based T-Mobile ROM onto your i717, it will be there. You need a new SIM though.

GrooVeIP will let you do voip (3g and wifi)
just make sure to set your gvoice account to use your email address as the primary number.
voila! incoming and outgoing voip calls (works for every carrier i've come across)
Wondering if anyone has seen anything on this for the note? I recently moved and tmobile service sucks but I get a good wifi signal in my apartment! Just wondering if there is any other solutions besides gvoice...I get free minutes when I use wifi calling also with tmobile so it would be awesome if it could be incorporated.
Yeah, while there are 3rd party solutions like GrooveIP, the best solution is to follow the link I posted and flash the T Mobile note img file and install the tmobile stock ROM which includes the true tmobile WiFi calling feature.

If you follow the link, toward the bottom of the first post there are instructions on running T-mobile ROM's on the i717. Follow those and you won't have any problems. I also have the at&t version, I believe though, you will have to be on the t-mobile network.

Yes, right now I am using my note on tmobile, so I guess it has been flashed to or with some other firmware....So would I still need a new sim I do not see why I would.....So you are saying just flashing a tmobile compatible rom. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe one with less bloatware and better battery life.

Might want to make a guide on how to do this. I feel like the T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling is in silent but in high demand by unlocked users.
I'm curious...if the T-Mobile stock ROMs work, why wouldn't a custom ROM for Tmobile also work? Has anyone tried?

Yes, it works. Some people (like me) sometimes experience slow hand-offs between LTE and 3G, that is, if you lose LTE service, you might be out of service for 30 seconds or so. Not a huge deal. If you have solid LTE in your area, it works fine.
That may also be due to the firmware, the latest ota fixed a handoff issue but if you already unlocked and flashed its really not recommended to update unless soff

SCH-i605 Wifi Calling on TMO

I considered that but I am enjoying JellyBeans 14 w/Saber 21 far too much LOL
I may just sell the sch-i605 and pick up a retail boxed TMO version if I do anything. I also used the S4 for a couple of hours it I really cant get over the larger screen and real estate of the Note II ; so I wouldnt consider it an "upgrade". My Note II with an Antutu of 19K+ I really dont have any true use for the faster CPU of the S4 right now......

please correct me if i am wrong but i don't think this is even close to possible as wifi calling is not necessarily as software hack but this is something actually built into tmo mobile spectrum similar to like vzw's using data while on a phone call, i recall a verizon rep telling me this.

From what I have dug up and seen thus far its basically a SIP client with tmo ties back to the android framework. It has nothing to do with the tmo spectrum aside from which band your transmitting over as it is a glorified VoIP client from anything I can tell.

Not "in the spectrum". It connects to the carrier over the internet, the normal cellular signal isn't involved at all. It requires both a helper app and framework support for it to happen though, and that stuff would only be present in the T-Mo firmware.
Here's a brief primer on it: http://www.wificalling.net/whatiswificalling/

There is a lot of stuff in the framework that needs added as well, on top of the APKs and LIBs. I believe most of it is in framework2.jar.

You are def right. Was pouring through the tmo apk and then the decompiled framework2 and see its in IPCallTracker , IPPhoneProxy , IPUtils , WifiCallSwitchPreference and score of other places.....
This will not be a simple apk and lib drop .

Considering that this is really supposed to be carrier-neutral, I'd say no, plus the included radio bands are more AT&T friendly so I'd think that'd doubly indicate no wi-fi calling.

I agree.
I doubt any stock Android build will ever have wifi calling built in, at least until it's pushed to AOSP.
The n4 doesn't so I don't see it having it

Being that the Google Edition is updated directly from google ala nexus, there will be no opportunity for proprietary software to be added in and tested as carriers require.
