What Kernel should I use? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello,
I couldn't find anything too specific on this so I thought I'd ask here.
I understand the nature of a kernel, and how it regulates the way in which applications interact with the hardware of the device. I also understand that some kernels may offer more features than others.
I was installing BeansTown's Rom for the S4, and when prompted to install a kernel, I realized that I honestly had no idea which one would work best for me. I have 3 options with this ROM - Stock Beans Kernel, Faux Mainline Kernel and KT Kernel. I started googling and only found some info on the KT Kernel without much luck on the other two. I also discovered that there are other kernel options for the Galaxy S4 which can be changed after the ROM has been installed.
I guess my question is, what types of features do these kernels offer and are what are some of the advantages of using one over the other? I don't plan on keeping the stock Samsung kernel because I'm sure there are other benefits to using the 3rd party ones, but I have no idea which one I should pick, or where I can find out more information.
Or, if there's a link to a resource I missed that would answer these questions?
Thanks guys!

I'm using KT's kernel and find it very good. I will provide a link that will help you set it up. I'm using the nightmare to remember settings and I'm getting killer battery life and great performance!

Go over to original development. There are 3 threads for kernels there. There are versions for touch wiz and AOSP 4.2.2. As well As 4.3. Each have their followers. Honestly they are all 3 very good. Try them all and see what works best for you.
Then if you run me7 based roms, I believe the elite kernel is the only one That have the smart features working correctly. But it has an issue that you can't charge the phone with it off. Have to do a battery pull to get it turned on again.
I will say that ktoonsez kernel has a nice app built in to tweak settings. Also a link in the op to a guy who keeps up with his kernels so he has all old versions also some pre-configured settings for the kernel you can download and apply.

Try different ones and see which you like most. IMO none of the custom kernels hold a candle to stock. Its well balanced between excellent battery life and great performance and its rock solid stable.

Thanks guys! I've tried KT Kernel and I may stick with that. But I'll double check in original development - I must have missed the threads there!

[Q] Which ROM? What's Voodoo? What's Touchwiz?

I'm due to get my GT10.1 on Thursday and I've been planning what ROM to put on it if one is required.
Firstly, from reading around I see people mention Voodoo sound and there seems to be quite a demand for it. Is this come kind of hack or update to improve sound quality?
Secondly, I'm guessing Touchwiz is Samsung's own UI type thing, kinda like HTC Sense?
Lastly, the ROM
I've looked at a few roms. I like my devices to look and work as intended by the manufacturer, but also have a few extra features.
I looked at Task's ROM but it doesn't seem to include Voodoo stuff from what I've read. I could be wrong though.
The next ROM I found which interests me is Bonsai 0.3.0. I don't usually trust anything outside of XDA, but this looks quite decent and has everything I'd want in a ROM. What are people's experience with it?
I'm guessing that flashing a ROM is as simple as following this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150732 or this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130574
Then flashing the ROM from Recovery.
I know these may seem like obvious questions, but I want to be 100% sure that what I've researched is correct before I do anything!

Voodoo isn't built into a rom. That is kernel related. So if you wanna give voodoo a shot you would have to flash pershoots kernel. He has integrated it in. As for roms. if you want touchwhiz and you want it to look stock and act as stock, i threw up a totally stock rom in my thread. Starburst is also a great rom.
Thanks for the reply mate!
I'm thinking of flashing Task650 KME with pershot's kernal (boot-cm_2636.4_ux-oc-xtra-vfpv3-d16_fp-082611.zip).
When I get my tab, how will I know if it's KME or KMB ect?

It should say that somewhere in the about tablet window of settings. Make sure you pick the right kernel from pershoot. I believe that's the right one but just make sure its touchwiz if tasks is touchwiz. Also you might want to see how you like stock. Its pretty good stock.

I am thinking of sticking with Stock as I can't find a ROM I'm 100% happy with the sounds of.
Task's rom sound awesome, but there seem to be a few people with problems. Nothing major, just things like icon res ect.
All I want, is completely stock with TouchWiz and the following:
1. Root
2. Voodoo sound
3. Overclocking to 1.4Ghz
4. Performance
I don't want anything else changing tbh unless it's for enhancements.
I was thinking of cooking my own ROM that meets my requirements but I don't have the time to learn how to do it if I'm honest.
Task's ROM sounds like it meets 99% of my requirements to me, but if anyone has any other suggestions then please do share!
Thanks
Do yourself a favor and stick with the stock ROM. Its the most stable and reliable ROM for the tab 10.1

You can root the tab yourself. What your looking for is all on the kernel side. Stay stock load pershoots kernel. Read the sticky on how to get root and CWM.

Think I'll give this a go too. Will try Task's ROM too to see how they compare and which I prefer.
Just a note: I'm not criticizing Task's ROM. It's excellent work. I'm just trying to get the best out of my Tab for my own use. If I use a Custom it WILL be Task's tbh.
Running Starburst ROM and Pershoot's kernel, Tab runs great!

Only problem is that the build number is XXKG8. When I go to Software update it says no updates found. How do I get it to update to KME? :/

You need to Flash CW recovery using the guides in the dev area then flash the zip provided in pershot's Kernal thread.
Make sure your device and firmware are compatible.

Best Rom Galaxy S II ???

I get my S II tomorrow and I've been looking around alot to see what the best rom out is, but there's loads of roms available.
What I'm asking is instead of spending multiple hours going through every rom to find out whats good, whats peoples favorites or what would you recommend,
Stuff I need working -
Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
(These are musts)
I would preferably like things like overclocking stuff that utilizes the dual core 1.2ghz processor.
Any ideas and thanks in advance
With multiple exact same posts as yours .
One their is no bests rom .
Two read the individual rom threads and make up your own mind.
Three if unable to make up your mind stick with stock .
Four posts belongs Q&A

Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
You should find they come with the phone not the rom .

Firstly sorry for not noticing the many other posts dedicated to this subject.
Secondary, camera etc may come with the phone but it doesn't specifically come with the rom, I have a Xperia Arc at the moment and the freexperia project doesnt have the camera up and running, so I feel like that was a valid question.
All I was asking is what people are using? What you prefer?
Not an index to what you hate and love about every rom

Coming from HTC Desire, I would of asked exactly the same questions. When new ROMS came out on HTC Desire, or the X10, not everything was working right from the start. Even on the ROMS on this phone it seems not everything is working, so surely the question is valid.
most are just themed roms and don't offer much over a rooted and tweaked stock rom.

The most famous roms have all the features your looking for i believe, Better Camera, overclock 1.6 Ghz, Better GPS etc.
But you can't say which one is best cause they all are different in their own way, specially in themes and so on.

@JJEgan, you were right in the other thread... this is getting ridiculous
@OP: there's really not much difference between them. The different ones are probably CM7, MIUI and Oxygen (they're not stable), the rest just have some modifications, and they mostly are stable with everything working. Just see which one has more views and pick one you think you like. Creating a thread like this has absolutely no point, you will get zero information out of it... even if people start answering you, you'll just get a random sample of what some people are using.

Just root it and add a kernel like niphetamine - get juicedefender too.

Villain Rom 2.4.2 best for me. It's based on stock firmware so gps, camera etc is working fine. Browser is laggy though so use Dolphin HD or another one from the market.

Flash the Ninphetamine kernel as its overclocked to 1.6ghz.

I agree with some of the others in this thread, just stock is best. Samsung polished the firmware really well and its amazing. Id say just flash a custom kernel if you want to do extra stuff like oc/uv or something. Really the only time i ever switch from stock is to try CM7 then or something. Other than that imo stock is best.
GS2 is the first phone where stock meet all my needs. Ive played with a couple of different roms and usually something happens after the first week.
Most roms in dev section give you a all in one package. So must of the tweaks that you would normally install manually are already preinstalled. This is the fun part about android with so many choices, try a couple out first and see what fits your needs.
This is a valid question, the more popular the phone the more hours of searching it takes. CM7 is buggy as hell. Stay away. Stick with stock and just flash a kernel. Samsung did a good job actually with this phone, especially with the skinning in my opinion. It amazes me people buy a super specd phone like this the install ROMS that strip the phone of it's power. CM7 is taking way too long honestly and it's absurd how buggy it is at this point in the phones release history.

Just a little rectification for OP and others: CM7 is an unstable nightly build officially, but it's usable. I have it for a week now, and I haven't had any serious problems. It's stable and I can use it just like the stock ROM, with very few limitations. I'm not going back to other roms for now
Leomar's revolution is amazing. Lots of customised stuff.
VillainROM for a stock look which allows for easily added tweaks. Friendly thread as well.
Ninphetamine kernel works great with both roms...

(Q) i9100 kernal porting

Is it possible to port kernals from i9100 forum to our device? They have so many different kernals and mods that we don't have and it would be nice to get them ported to our devices. Entropy has done as Fantasic job with hellraiser and it have given is the ability to port a large number of roms over in the i9100 forums. The only thing that we are missing that would complete the merge between our device and the i9100 would be kerenls. Is this possible? What are the hardware differences that would cause a problem when trying to do so? Obviously the soft keys and mapping are different but we have a fix for that. Is the processor the same? Any devs out there on our side have any feedback on this?

Mainly a few defconfig tweaks, and also possibly initramfs tweaks.
It should be a matter of taking a defconfig for an I9100 and changing the correct options via "make menuconfig" - don't remember exactly which those are.
I am not sure i know what that involves but how difficult would that be
I've had this phone for a few weeks now and I've been rooting for only 3 weeks and its the greatest mobile experience of my life. The freedom of Android and the versatility and power of rooting makes the SGS2 the all around greatest phone on the planet in my opinion. I'm currently using Unnamed 1.3.1 with Entropy's DD and this combo has been an awesome experience so far. I recently experimented with the Siyah kernel (I9100) and loved the variation of governor choices and the power that the kernel provided. I'm also a huge fan of Entropy's kernel because of the great balance of performance and battery life, however when OC to 1.4 or 1.6, the Siyah kernel provided so much more power based on bench tests. After experimenting for an hour I went back to Entropy due to the issues with the soft keys. If a port of the Siyah kernel is not coming any time soon to the AT&T i777, does anyone know of a patch or mod that can fix the issue with the soft keys when using a kernel like Siyah that's made for i9100 on our AT&T i777 ? Any help or feedback on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

There is already a patch for this included in Hellraiser package that Entropy made. There is also a patch for the home button haptic feedback.
Sorry if I sound really dumb asking these questions as I'm definitely a noob when it comes to rooting. However, isn't Hellraiser a rom for i777? So if I want to use the Siyah kernel with the soft key patch it would have to be with Hellraiser? The reason I'm asking is because I really love Unnamed so far. Its my first rom and its so smooth and efficient. Also, what if I wanted to try out a particular rom for i9100 on our phone? Same soft key issue would arise right? It seems from the OP that a possible solution also has to do with Hellraiser. If this is true I'm confused as I thought Hellraiser is a particular rom for i777. Please elaborate.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Hellraiser is a porting tool to take ROMs from I9100 to I777. Among other things, it replaces the kernel.
To get the touchkeys to work right when trying to compile an I9100 kernel for I777, at the very least you need to set "Target Locale" to NAGSM in the System Type menu within "make menuconfig"
You will also need to set CONFIG_MAX8922_CHARGER in the defconfig. I forget where in "make menuconfig" this is buried
You will also have to choose an appropriate initramfs - the one that comes with the kernel you're porting may work. Also, the approach various devs use for pulling in the initramfs differs from kernel to kernel. Many devs don't even provide their initramfs in their source repos (good luck pulling a clean one from SiyahKernel... LZMA/XZ compression makes this nearly impossible.)
Thanks for the insight Entropy but I'm way too raw in rooting to grasp some of the stuff you are trying to explain. Also I want to say thank you for the awesome work on your daily driver kernel (which i'm happily still using). In regards to Hellraiser, what do you mean by "replacing the kernel"? Do you mean that Hellraiser will allow i777 users to use i9100 roms with a compatible kernel of their choice? Finally, what are the chances of some developers porting a i9100 kernel over to i777 like Siyah? Based on your previous post, it shouldn't take too long right? I believe this would breathe extended life and possibilities into the i777.

What I mean is that Hellraiser takes the kernel from an I9100 ROM and replaces it with an I777 kernel (right now, mine.)
Someone can try porting a kernel if they want, but I have ZERO interest in putting any effort into porting Siyah. Judging by all the problems people are constantly having, half the features are broken. Also, gokhanmoral does not respect the GPL and publish source for his betas, so it's impossible to separate one change from another.
Thanks for the explanation Entropy512. I was able to get in touch with Gokhanmoral and i'm currently testing out a Siyah port for i777 for him now. Regardless of which kernel i'm using with Unnamed rom now, I can not thank you enough for all of the hard work that you've put into your DD kernel. It will always be one of my main kernels. I can not say enough great things about it. I'm just experimenting right now to see if I can get some more power out of this phone at similar frequencies and this is where the Siyah kernel comes into play.

Kernels are kind of limited in this phone's development, but very high quality. I would say it depends on preference. I have tried them all, perseus is a kernel that hasn't seen an update for a while, but is one of the only 2 ExFat kernels that allows for Overclocking to 1.8ghz. PBJ is another just like it by Imnuts that doesn't feature overclocking but Exfat as well. Devil Kernel is a kernel that allows you to flash it onto either an AOSP or a samsung touchwiz rom, so its very useful and allows for audio increasing and overclocking to 2ghz stable. To prevent this thread from getting locked on biased favoritism, Every kernel that is available is good, some have stopped development, and some get it every day or time its needed, try a few and see what you like.

[Q] Stock TW 4.1.2 kernel

Hi All,
I'm looking for a stock TouchWiz (TW) Kernel for JB 4.1.2.
No OC, no BLN, just a stock kernel.
I know they are included in several roms, but i'm trying to add it to a rom that doesn't offer a stock kernel version. I found one that was close, but for whatever reason it removed vibration control.
The OC versions (with and without) both remove the function of my capacative buttons.
So my question is... Does anyone have a stock TW 4.1.2, non OC kernel or if not, would a dev be so kind as to rip it and make one available?
Thanks so much for your assistance.

the only thing I can think of which may come close, but I don't know cause you didn't say what ROM you are running and they need to be compatible, might be a KERNEL from BLOWNFUZE. it is 4.1.2 made for BIGFAU and his BLACK JELLY. I was trying to compare what it has and what you dont want. maybe you should look for yourself, you can find it on p.115 of AOKP ROM thread.
might be as close as you can get without finding some one to tear their work apart for a single request. PHASE KERNEL would be the only other I know of, but it has OC/UV.
unless there is something I don't know about, which IS possible as unfortunately I dont know everything.
good luck

The rom I'm running is [ROM][4.1.2][Padawan-Kang] Prophylactic 1.0 but my intention was just to have the kernel as a standalone option for those that just want the stock kernel.
The problem I'm having with the OC kernels (Fuze and Da_G) is that the capacitive lights are not working with them. Fuze's works for for BLN, but i'm not using BLN. Functionally, both of those kernels are super fast and I have no issues with stability or performance.
For now, I'm ok with living without it as it's a nice to have and not a need so I respect your opinion in being the only one to request such a kernel. My sole thought was just to have it as an option for those that don't need/want OC and are fine with stock functionality for the kernel.
I didn't think AOKP kernels could be used with TW roms, am I mistaken in that?

that is true, but as I said and as BLOWNFUZE states in his post, he designed it for BIGFAU and his ROM. its sounds and looks as if ANTHONY has provided an option too. his is the PHASE KERNEL though isn't it ? that's why I went back and edited my original for you to make back up, whatever you do.
let us know what you try and if it works, others may be curious.

I posted a link to a TW Stock rom that was ripped from BlackJelly by Anthony(Stock_TW_4.1.2.zip), Isn't that what you wanted? I haven't tried it as I am running the Fuse Kernel with [ROM][4.1.2][Padawan-Kang] Prophylactic 1.0

Yeah, I realized the BlownFuze was meant for BlackJelly and it works just fine with the ROM I'm using. The [ROM][4.1.2][Padawan-Kang] Prophylactic 1.0 uses the Da_G version 4 which has a slow charge issue, that's why I reverted to v3 which doesn't have the slow charge issue. Da_G is working on that, but even with that Kernel the capacitive buttons don't light up so in that regard, they are both great kernels that OC, and are stable, but don't enable the capacitve so they're in the same boat for me.
The phase kernel I need to try again to verify that the capacitive buttons don't light up, but if memory serves, it only works fluidly with smartass V2 as the governor. Again though, with the capactive issue, it's in the boat with the other OC roms.
Those were the only Kernels (one exception that I'll note in response to the next post) for 4.1.2 TW that I was able to locate which lead me to the post. I certainly have headed your advice regarding a backup and I have 2 just in case .
As I said, it's a nice to have, not a requirement. I'll update this if anything changes.

Yeah, I tried that one as Anthony linked it in the thread, but it removed vibration for me and I ended up missing several notifications during work hours because of it.
Otherwise, it worked just fine in terms of capacitive buttons lighting up. You're welcome to try it and confirm my findings.

my bad GPFERROR. good eye in finding that
I had a nandroid of the stock 4.1.2 ROM so I just went into TWRP and restored only the boot image from the stock ROM which gave me the stock kernel. Everything is working fine.

i have been running phase kernel on stock rooted 4.1.2 for months and have never had issue with lights not working. are you sure its not a rom issue. and the obvious did you check to make sure touch key lights are not turned off?

****EDIT**** Confirmed that it's not a kernel issue.
Thanks for this info, I suppose I didn't think about it being a ROM issue that would impact the lights. I have double and triple checked that setting toggeled it off/on and tried each one of the options with each kernel.
I guess I just assumed it was the kernel.
Any idea what in the ROM controls that? I'll reply in the original thread to see if we can figure that out.
Thanks very much for confirmation that it's not the phase kernel that' causing the touch key lights issue.
