I have been able to get true 4g LTE near Charlotte, NC. 30 down, 10 up. No voice though since it's only able to be set to LTE/CDMA.
Two questions...is it possible to add the LTE/WCDMA/GSM mobile network? All we have is Global, LTE/CDMA and GSM/UMTS. I haven't seen a way to add a mobile network. Would putting a custom rom on enable that? I was also getting H and H+ recently and now I get E at my house put T-Mobile branded iPhone 5c and Note 3 are pulling in 4g via HSPA. Shouldn't I be able to get I too? i do pick it up when I get closer to Charlotte but I'll be H+, drop to E and then back to H in the span of 20 yards.

So this is intereting, I rooted and enabled the hidden menus so I can access the service menus and also changed my sales_code to AWS from VZW. This allowed pretty much all the band combinations to show up in the Network mode selections.
In the first drop down, I selected GSM/WCDMA/LTE and in the second did LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect).
I will now on my way to work gor from E to H to H+ and then 4G LTE.
Looking at *#0011# when connected to LTE I get this in the first line: "LTE RRC: CONN, Band4. H+ = "RRC: DCH, Band2", H = "RRC: FACH, Band2.
When connected to 4G LTE, I get switched to H/H+ when a voice call is made or comes in.
I am still at a loss by not being able to connect to H/H+ at home. I still get E (PCS1900) but T-Mobile branded phones get H and I was also getting H testing the S4 with my wife's SIM card from her Note 3 a couple weeks ago. Only thing I can think of is a tower is down?

The verizon Galaxy S4 does not have AWS 1700 band enabled, so you will only get T-mobile 4G in 1900mhz refarmed areas. There is a hack for the AT&T Galaxy S4 to enable the 1700 AWS band for T-mobile, but it does not appear one is available for the Verizon version. So you will get band 4 LTE, EDGE and 3G UMTS 1900 and 4G 1900, but in areas that are not refarmed to 1900, you will only get EDGE until the 1700 AWS band can be activated

Not going to say your statement is false, but the last 2 modems DO enable the AWS for LTE on the Verizon S4, which allows true LTE with T-Mobile service.
I wrote a tutorial on how to get LTE working this way. Don't necessarily have to flash this specific rom, but do read the modem and apn settings part. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560128

question on sales code
Cadams7701, what method did you use to change the sales code to aws? I heave read a few methods but none seem to give me more network options. So far I get fewer network options. Thanks.

Whoa whoa whoa!!! Wait a minute! So, I have one of the original Verizon Galaxy S4's (MDK BUILD) - fully unlocked boot loader. As far as I know, I haven't "unlocked" my phone...unless that just means, unlocked boot loader...? Any feedback on this? I'm sorry guys, haha...even if someone would rather PM me, go for it Thanks for any feedback!
Also, my reason for asking is that I'm planning to switch to T-Mobile....I've had enough with Verizon

The MDK only means you have q bootloader exploit. Make no mistake it's still not a truly unlocked bootloader like you see on other carriers like T-Mobile.
It's a sch-i545 and it'll always remain locked but with Loki exploit.
Now our Verizon S4s are all SIM unlocked so that they can be activated on other networks. It just depends on the frequency they run as to whether you'll still get 4g from what I understand.
I've ever only used Verizon so I can't tell you for sure on that part

Thanks for the feedback!

I may be a little late to the party but better late than never. I stopped by the T-Mobile store with my I545. The clerk put in the sim, made some apn changes, said voice works and handed it back to me. Got home, ran a few speed tests, averaged 1.5 Mbps down and .5 Mbps up. Not very impressive. I read thru this thread and a few others, and now have 18 down and 13 up. That's about triple what I was getting from Boost. After about a week, the sim card activation notification is gone. I'm happy.
But I'm not entirely issue free. I can't send sms or mms until I receive a voice call. Before I get a voice call, I can call out, get 4G LTE to light up and have internet access, Also, on the lock screen right above "Emergency Call", it says "No Service". When a call comes in, the "No Service" changes to "T-Mobile" and everything works great. In addition, during boot I get a popup that T-Mobile's Visual Voice Mail has stopped working. I suspect something is still trying for Verizon and failing. Any ideas how to fix this issue?

I am using NC5 and i am getting 4G LTE atleast in St. louis area.
For visual voicemail not working an easy fix is.. let me phone run for 5 mins(do whatever you want) after boot. switch off the wifi(does not matter if you are not connected to one) and then open the visual voicemail app. it should work.
If it still does not work call tmobile, for me they fixed something from their end before it started working in the first place.

Thanks. I just placed a message to T-Mobile.
Even tho I get the message that visual voicemail has stopped working, it still works fine. Overall, I'm happy with the service, just want it perfect.

Hello!
I know I am a little late to the game but I was able to successfully get my s4 working with T-Mobile. If anyone can give me deeper clarification as to why this worked, I would be most grateful.
Steps to my process:
1) Rooted my device using KingsRoot
2) Inserted Tmobile Sim
3) Using Wifi I downloaded Advanced Signal Status App
4) Changed APN settings to what Tmobile recommends, I used fast.t-mobile.com
5) Changed my Settings to Global
6) Went into Advanced Signal Status and changed settings to Gsm/CDMA
7) Imputed tmobile number into the space provided below the data settings.
8) Restarted device and have H+/3G. I am able to successfully make calls, send SMS, MMS, and use Interwebs.

Droid DNA on AWS networks

I recently bought a Droid DNA about a week ago, it has S-off its unlocked, rooted stock. Basically I am in Toronto and I am on Wind Mobile, its good enough for what i need at the moment. I am paying 30$ for unlimited talk/text + data which i am currently using on the my Nexus 4.
Now I found out the DNA doesn't work on AWS so that's a bummer but there are other carriers if i really need it. Is here anyway that i can use my DNA on Wind Mobile by flashing the radio or messing with some settings because it can connect to roaming just not home.
Thanks.

fist check the freq bands and make sure that the antennae that comes with the DNA using the gsm settings are compatible. If they are, you should just need to set your phone to gsm and add the correct APN for Winds network.
Nope, which bands a phone is compatible with is a hardware thing and can't be changed through software.

Yeah that's what i thought but I just figured I ask just in case there was a solution. No big deal, I'm just getting a good price with Wind that the main reason, so in case I want to switch to the DNA i can just switch to another carrier.
Thanks for the help
Do not flash radios that aren't for the DNA specifically or you will brick the device...

The phone is quad band HSPA except 1700, Quad band Edge and HSPA you should get HSPA+ if the network your talking about uses 1900 like AT&T if it uses the right frequencies you can use AWS HSPA+ I would test the simcard add the proper APN in the settings and she if you get above edge.

I put in the sim card and It only detects it as "Wind Away" and its connects as roaming. Wind runs on 1700/2100 shouldn't it not be able to connect at all? Why do you think it connects to roaming?

[Q] LG Optimus G E970 on T-Mobile

Would I be able to unlock, root this phone (LG Optimus G E970 ) and run it on T-Mobile network. I am hearing multiple reports - some say it will only get 2G data while others say it will work. Since T-Mobile might be introducing LG Optimus G Pro on their network in the future and with the reframing going on I am wondering if the phone will at least get 3G data? Please can someone confirm?
Of course, speeds and coverage depend on network provider but I just want to be sure that I can get at least 3G in a big city before I jump in.
Lucky you. You'll actually get the full LTE package with this model of the Optimus G!!!!. But coverage is going to be ass if your coming from AT&T or Verizon.
T mobile LTE will be available to you when it comes to your area. The AT&T Optimus G runs on bands 4 and 17, T mobile will have band 4 so its all good. Depending on where you live, LTE might not available for a while..
Depending on you area, if Tmo is using 1900 band for HSPA+ you will get HSPA+ 21
I know for a fact because I was testing it for a month of unlimited data no contract on my unlocked ATT Optimus G in the Los Angeles Area. I was getting about 5 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps Up.
works for me... king of

I am on Tmobile in maryland near Washington, DC. After I set up the APN to fast.tmobile.com, I get pretty good 4g. I have yet to see LTE or 3g. I do get edge in some more rural areas. I had hotspot working okay after I unchecked entitlement from the hidden menu, But after I flashed the stock jellybean, the option is no longer in my hidden menu so although I still get data service, I cant use it as hotspot
I have this on T-mobile and so far i have been getting 2g/3g not 4g yet but ive only been using it on the roads. not sure if thats why.
do i have to set the apn even after i unlock it for higher speeds?
I've been thinking about switching an AT&T E970 to T-Mobile, but I'm slightly confused in regards to data speeds. For my AT&T iPhone 5, I'll mostly get EDGE, unless I live in an area with T-Mobile's refarmed HSPA+, or their LTE (both supposedly coming this month).
From what I've read, the AT&T E970 should pretty much be getting everything from T-Mobile, including 3G?

I recently switched my e970 to t-mobile so I had to unlock and set the apn and all I get is 4g but not LTE my speed test came out 10mb down 2-15mb up. I was playing around with the hidden menus to try LTE but when I wanted to activate the "AWS" which is band 4 it said "FAIL" does this have to do with permissions because im not rooted. I know south florida has no LTE yet but wouldn't I still be able to enable LTE? As far as the hidden menus just dial 8345#*970# if you get an error you have to install the service menu apk you can find it if you search. Play around with the hidden menu LTE-only option and see what you get. And just to put it out there i believe the E970 supports HSPA+ 42 on tmobile refarmed 1900 band.

I have installed the service menu apk and have been playing around with LTE only option but no luck. When I chose band 4, my signal bar went all the down to only one bar though cannot make calls. I've also tried all the bands but none of them worked. Also the E970 does not support 42 mbps, only 21 mbps max.

What you want to do is download the (service menu app), you can search for it here on this site it's where I got mine. After you installed it, go to WCDMA - only then Modem Settings then Network Mode then choose WCDMA 1900 and you're all set.

Yesterday I gave up and rooted, unlocked, installed cwm and started flashing nexus 4 radios, the. 48 one is supposed to be great for tmo and it does work well, faster download and uploads, along with no data drops, while most of the older and newest India radio had many drops during speed tests.
I went into the "secret menu" and selected wcdma 1900 only but it still keeps me on umts /hspap, question is maybe that's how the network works here? When I'm downloading, loading something or doing a speed test it switches to H when I'm not doing anything it goes to umts?
I'll find the apk and try it for **** and giggles.
I use this code 3845#*970#
The app I downloaded does nothing.

Anyways is the VZW Galaxy S4 SIM unlocked out of the box? I keep reading the new VZW releases in 2012 and onwards are according to the VZW forums and website but then I found a post of someone asking VZW for an unlock. It its an official code its easier to just ask VZW as I meet all the requirements (1+ year customer). Also I read that on the S3 the APN settings are blocked on the default VZW firmware unless rooted. Is the APN settings on the S4 open (changeable) by default?
Also what's a realistic battery life you guys are getting out of this phone?
Am comparing phones and need a phone that is:
1. SIM Unlocked and APN settings changable that has VZW's US CDMA and LTE bands PLUS ALL the international bands (the 4 GSM and 4 UMTS international bands).
2. Has HSPA+21 at least.
3. Long battery life to last the day.
4. Rootable so I can get rid of VZW crap and increase the battery life.
I've also not seen any international VZW phones with HSPA+42 dual carrier like Apple's iPhone 5. I'm also debating getting a Android versus iOS phone...

Recently took my S4 to Brazil and spent a fair bit of time talking to Verizon Global Support before the trip. One of the questions I asked was whether the phone was SIM unlocked so that I could purchase a SIM card while in Brazil and use local service down there. The VZW rep assured me the phone was indeed unlocked, but I did not use a Brazilian SIM card while on travel so I cannot confirm via personal experience.
I can confirm that it is unlocked. I put an active att sim card in, that then allowed me to add the correct apn info. I was then able to make calls and use data.

The SCH-I545 has Quad band GSM/EDGE frequency's (850/900/1800/1900) and Quad band UMTS/HSPA (850/900/1900/2100) As well as AWS bands for LTE (1700/2100) so it should get LTE on T-Mobile. However, it does not have the capabilities to get LTE on AT&T since the SCH-I545 does not have the frequency's to operate on AT&T's LTE network but it will get HSPA+ on both networks. It will work on Sprint as well but it will not get LTE since its two LTE bands, (700 and 1700/2100), are not compatible. Sprint operates on the same CDMA/ Ev-Do bands as VZW so you will get 3G. I can confirm that i have used the SCH-I545 with an AT&T SIM card and i got HSPA+ speeds.

The AWS is there but not activated yet. for now you will only get EDGE on t-mobile unless in a refarmed are you will pickup HSPA. you will however pickup all AWS tis summer when verizon activates that band on our phone.
SOURCE: I'm on the 30$ a month prepaid with t-mobile. edge sucks but it works.

Hi,
I have had the same outcome, voice and data work, BUT data is only HPSA+ at best. Do you get 4G LTE or found a way to get it?
Thanks!

No, but that is because i am not in an area where ATT has LTE turned on. South Dakota is still on the waiting list. Verizon uses different frequencies for LTE then ATT does.
Verizon has never locked their phones, even the CDMA ones. If you put a non Verizon SIM in you can change the APN settings

I tired to do the same and just buy the phone straight from att and they wouldn't give me to me because I'm not att customer. So I had to go with eBay and got it for 210. But yea Orlando is refarmed to 1900 and is getting Lte service.

tmobile sim and verizon galaxy s4?

I have been reading and searching online to find the definitive answer to this question. I am currently using a straight talk compatible sim in my verizon galaxy s4 and it works great - of course straight talk does not use LTE so I am limited to 3g speeds. I'm also trying to find out if it is possible to use a tmobile sim in the verizon galaxy s4 and get 3g speeds? How about LTE? The appropriate radios seem to be installed but I am not sure if that is enough. Has anyone done any testing on this front?
Thanks!
If you go into your hidden menus and dig around enough you will find options to enable the WCDMA and GSM radios. Back when I tanked my sim card I was digging through the menus for hours and at one point under network options I could see AT&T and T-Mobile signal even though I didn't have the SIM to actually connect.
I would imagine if I had the sim I could have connected no problem.
But because the menus are so deep and obnoxiously laid out, I don't have more specifics on where all to navigate to find the right options.

I tried with my Tmo Sim and was able to get the phone and 1xrtt and Edge data connections but not LTE. I don't know if Verizon has enabled the LTE bands that Tmo uses.

Do you think there are options to enable different radio frequencies? I could connect to the Tmo GSM towers but couldn't get an LTE data signal.
Where were you looking in the menus?

You didn't get any signal because nothing was turned on in your hidden menus to allow it.
And yes, loads of frequencies listed for LTE, WCDMA, and GSM.
You have to enable hidden menu. Then start digging. Like I said there are too many options/submenus for me to remember exactly where everything was.
If someone really wants to get their phone on another network it is possible. They just have to really want it and therefore really put in the time to dig.

Band 4 LTE is disabled by the software on Verizon Galaxy S4. It will have band 4 LTE enabled when Verizon activates Band 4. They will release the firmware update that will enable it. So far you can only get 3g on 1.9 Ghz, 850 Mhz and 900 Mhz and 2g egde with gsm simcard.

The latest update from 4.2.2 to 4.3 has an update in it to enable band 4 aws that vzw will be using. Once you've updated to 4.3, it's just a matter of waiting for vzw to turn on band 4 in your area.

However if you have a VZW Galaxy S4 on another network, the option of OTA 4.3 update I don't think is possible.

I have updated my phone to android 4.3 and discontinued the contract with Verizon. Now I cannot access any updates from Verizon.
Do you still feel, when vzw turns on band 4 in my area, I can access 4G on my GS4 with Straight Talk sim(4G enabled)?

I can absolutely 100% confirm for you that a Verizon Galaxy S4 on the latest Verizon radio can access T-Mobile LTE. This post and its attached screenshots were done from T-Mobile LTE on a VZ GS4.

It's really not that hard. You just need to be able to add the APN for T-Mobile. The VZ phone is already unlocked. I also just flashed one of mine back to the MDK baseband (radio/modem) and it also supports T-Mobile LTE where I am. Coincidentally, it gets 2 bars + LTE in this particular location in LA whereas the T-Mobile GS4 with Tmob radio is getting 1 bar + LTE.

Sorry, I'm afraid that one's not going to (easily) happen. The phone may or may not have the hardware for it, but you'd need the right radio to enable the LTE band that AT&T uses. Right now, I don't know of one, and I don't feel like playing with the AT&T radios to see if they would happen to flash properly to enable things. T-Mobile & AT&T use relatively identical phones and can run LTE on each other's respective networks. So, I'd say, use one of their hardware sets on AT&T. I use AT&T LTE on a Nexus 5 and a T-Mobile GS4, but I can only get H+ on the VZ GS4 on AT&T. The VZ phone does do the T-Mobile LTE band just fine, though.

I was able to get LTE with AIO Wireless sim by toggling to LTE/GSM Auto(PRL). It seems to pickup Band 4 for ATT.
My 2 cents.
Does this still work?
I have a heightened interest in switching to T-Mobile now that they will pay for my early termination fee. I have a rooted VZW S4, added a new apn, and I am using an older sim card but i can't get it to connect to t-mobiles network. What all needs to be done to my phone in order for it to work. I did some research and saw that tmobile and verizon have the same LTE frequency and band.
EDIT (1/10/2014: I bought an activation kit at Walmart and activated the sim card. I am not connected.
I'm also using a Verizon Galaxy S4 with Straight Talk (ATT SIM). I have voice and text, but no data. I've changed the APN with no luck. I tried it in my Verizon Galaxy S3 and received E (Edge data) which was CRAZY slow. Any suggestions? I have a ATT Galaxy S4 Active being delivered today, so I guess it doesn't really matter, but very curious why I can't get any data on my Verizon S4 through Straight Talk.
If this helps anyone
This is how I have LTE with T-Mobile working on a Verizon S4...
I am getting 4Glte on my vzw S4 using tmobile prepaid!
When I got tmobile I was only getting H+ and 3g and all of a sudden I start getting 4Glte! I love it!
